Artistic Portrayal of Time and Space.......2006-09-26
"..succession in time is the province of the poet, co-existence in space that of the artist." This insightful and compellng excursion into comparative aesthetics led me to choose comparative literature as a graduate study and profession. It argues eloquently that the writer's ability to show events both simultaneously and in succession transcends in overall impact the painter's restriction of having to show objects that co-exist in space. In the "shield of Achilles" episode in Homer's Iliad, the poet is able to paint a "moving picture" that subsumes art into words at the same time that it praises the sculptor's work. The poet, moreover, can deal with both the visible and the invisible. All who have chosen the vocation of writing should take this book to a beach resort and read it in tranquility.
The Godfather of Art Criticism.......2000-07-10
If you are of the notion that the tide is turning in aesthetics once again, and you're right, then G.E. Lessing's seminal Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry is once again a necessary starting point. Edward A. McCormick has finally given English speaking academians a satisfactory translation of this tricky and ultimately unrealized work. Lessing had originally planned to survey music and dance as well. Nevertheless, Laocoon commands a formidable position in the history of letters as a breakthrough vision in aesthetics and the turning point of our notions about Western art. The author's speculations about the origin of the masterpiece, for which the essay is named, throwing his hat in the ring with commentators from Pliny to Winckelmann, gradually gives way to an inspired meditation on Homer and the greater issues at hand: What are the distinguishing characteristics of art? of poetry? G.E. Lessing's investigations show that the answers to these questions aren't as self evident as they seem. Henceforth, each practice's direction since has been the gradual essentializing of the scope of the respective mediums, Mallarme and Mondrian for instance. Immpressively, in Laocoon Lessing turns out not only to be a forerunner of modernism but also a sophisticated semiotician long before Saussure. Edward A. McCormick's edition of Laocoon, with a short bio and extra bonus of a foreword by Michael Fried, is a keystone work for any canonical study in aesthetics and the art of the West. 7/9/00
Book Description
Originally published in 1766, Lessing's seminal tract is a turning point in the study of Western art. In this essay on the origins, forms, and influences of painting and poetry, Lessing helped frame modern conceptions of the artistic medium, and founded our modernist assumptions of the uniqueness of the individual arts.

Book Description
This is a book about a President named George who has a dream. In this dream, George becomes a little boy, and he meets a Truth Fairy who is trying to teach him lessons about How to not manipulate the Media, How to treat Veterans, How to be honest, How to be respectful with families who have lost soldiers in war, How to go to War only when necessary, How not to label people as Boogeymen, How not to invade countries, How to control greed, How to hold fair elections, and How to behave as a leader. Though there are political lessons and footnotes for people to learn more, the ultimate lesson in the 32 paged hard cover children's style 81/2" x 11" book is that we are all connected; we are all one. On his journey while playing the game of "Let's Imagine" with the Truth Fairy, the young boy George learns many other lessons, including the fact that it is up to each of us to create the person we are becoming.

Conservatives Can't Recognize Satire!.......2006-05-12
The fact that people can read this book and think it's a children's book is sort of scary. This is satire folks. The book is using something called "irony" in an attempt to be "funny." I'm sure you've heard of satire. Now learn to recognize it. This book is a lampooning of the book "Help ! Mom! There are Liberals Under the Bed"...by the way, that book is designed to be a children's book. This one is intended to be funny.
If you're still struggling with satire and irony I'll give you another example. "Things sure are going great in America. Under the leadership of that genius George Bush, things couldn't be any better. We're winning the war in Iraq. If it weren't for those darn T.V. cameras that show all those bombs killing all those people everyone would know we're winning. Why doesn't the media show bombs NOT exploding? Where are those stories? We no longer have anything to fear because President Bush has got everything under control. God Bless the smartest, bestest President ever, George W. Bush."
0-STARS "Teach Your Children To Be Vicious Haters," or "How to ensure your children will end up in federal prison.".......2006-01-17
The vicious hatefest that is NO, George, NO! is typical ultra-left wing hateful propaganda, to be sure. But to teach such hate to children is only asking for trouble down the road. Remember, children become rebellious during their teenage years. This book will plant seeds that are best left unplanted.
But the most disgusting thing about this book is that it attempts to quash critical thinking skills on the way to forced indoctrination. Any parent who would teach their children to hate so venomously at an early age should be frog-marched to prison, because that's where their chldren will probably end up after being indoctrinated so. Kim Jung-Il is more open-minded than the author of this inexcusable drivel.
The pathetic losers who are about to serve hard time for slashing the tires of Republican vans the night before the 2004 Presidential Election are the vision you should have in mind prior to subjecting your children to such blindly hateful propaganda. You will be doing your children, this nation, and liberal causes no favors by encouraging your children to hate with the ferocity we have seen since Democrats lost the last three consecutive elections. Remember, thinking you are correct doesn't make it so.
NO, Kathy, NO!.......2005-12-22
This is just sad. If you're going to write a political book, at least do it in a mature way for an audience who cares. A mediocore children's book filled with sugar-coated lies is an absolutly pathetic way to make your opinions known.
Just plain bad........2005-12-01
First of all, I'm not a conservative, so don't discount the review on that basis. I also trashed "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" Both books suffer from dogmatic stereotypes and are inappropriate for children. But beyond that, "No, George, No," is just plain bad. Poorly written and poorly illustrated, it's a crummy kids book. Period. Save your money and buy something by Eric Carle or Richard Scarry. In other words, by a good children's book.
Horrible.......2005-11-03
As a hardcore liberal I think this book is horrible. To read such political hack job to children is bad. This is as bad as "Help Mom there's a liberal under my bed." Teaching your children such garbage is a case for your reparenting. If you get it for yourself, than it's just another liberal book making fun of Bush.

don't waste 20.00 on this.......2007-01-12
Anxious to learn more about the Cinemascope process, I finally broke down and purchased this book. What a waste of money. The entire first section (most of the book) is only a bunch of reviews, and bad ones at that (ie: "Auntie Mame was a failure as a film" ...come on it's one of the best transfers to film from a Broadway show and beloved). Then the 2nd section contains reproductions of posters from films and looks like it was printed on an old mimeograph machine, awful black and white reproductions, which are hazy and worn. The information on each film doesn't even tell if the film was mono, or 4 track stereo, and there is NO history on the process anywhere in the book. I am going to sell mine immediately, even before I even read any further.
This is quite sad, since the authors had a great opportunity to tell about the process, how it came to be, what was involved in the process from a tech point of view, how it was developed, and to show some quality posters with a good printing. If I wanted bad reviews and cheezy poster reproductions, I could have had this for free on websites (websites offer better poster reproductions. What a sad loss, it could have been a great book for widescreen process film fans. I will definately not be buying the 2nd and 3rd books. Too bad Amazon doesn't allow for a zero star rating.
CinemaScope One.......2005-09-09
I knew I was in trouble when the very first movie I turned to (Apache Rifels) was never made in CinemaScope, or any other anamorphic process. (There were other non-Scope titles included, too.)
This is an amateurish hodge podge of "reviews" of various movies printed in large type. No rhyme nor reason. For those who are interested there are some poorly reproduced posters in back of the book. Again, a number that were never in Scope.
CinemaScope One, Stupendous in 'Scope Is Just That!.......2004-07-05
The big event in my moviegoing youth was the introduction of CinemaScope. I can still see all those full-page ads in the newspapers that told us "The Robe", the movie miracle sensation that we could view "without special glasses", was about to hit town. Now this book doesn't focus on "The Robe". Instead it takes an overview of the whole widescreen revolution, with complete credit and cast details of particular movies in various processes such as "Auntie Mame", "The Black Shield of Falworth", "Comanche Station", "Gorilla at Large", "Hombre", "How To Steal a Million", "Imitation General", "Inferno", "Kissin' Cousins", "The Last Hunt", "Manhattan", "Man of the West", "Pal Joey", "Star Wars", "The Swan", "Three Faces of Eve", "20,000 Leagues under the Sea", "23 Paces to Baker Street", etc. There are also articles on Fox's CinemaScope short subjects and a list of all the various widescreen processes. Plus many reproductions of contemporary posters (in black-and-white, unfortunately). But for a 172-page large format paperback with beautiful color covers, $19.95 is a bargain. I'm eagerly lokking forward to more books in this series. I'm still working on CinemaScope Two and I look forward to feedback and suggestions.

it's the first blackjack book i ever read and i really enoyed it!
I was clueless.......2004-01-09
I picked up this book in anticipation of heading off to Nevada for vacation, and wow it really does lay it all out and explains everything in simple to understand jargon. I'm glad I started with it. I've been practicing playing over and over, and I'm pleased to report that (on paper) I am thousands of dollars ahead. The dealer I'm playing with (my hubby) is threatening to bar me from the casino (the breakfast room)!
Even an experienced player will learn from this book!.......1999-04-11
I've been a blackjack player for many years and have read quite a few books on the subject...this is one of the most helpful books I've read! The author not only knows a lot about the game, he is also a very entertaining writer. I've tried the betting system he recommends, and so far it's working great! I now win a lot more than I lose!!! Every blackjack player will enjoy reading this fine book.
Great book for a new player!.......1999-04-04
I'm a novice blackjack player and have read 2 other books about the game, but found this book to be much easier to understand and much more fun to read. The author seems to really know his stuff!

Excellent Reference.......2007-07-22
This is one of my dog-eared, marked up books. I come back to it time and again to check strategies, look for new ideas and test tactics. You don't have to do everything at once. Just pick a tip or approach, follow through and measure your results. You'll find that many of these timeless practices fit the Internet-age, as well.
A Must for every small business person!.......2007-07-14
I can't say enough good things about this book. I have most of the Guerilla marketing books, but this was a real must for me. Having a limited budget to get exposure, Levinson helped me take my company and my authors to the next level of success.
I look forward to continued success under the guidance of Mr. Levinson and his Guerilla Books.
A Derek Sivers Recommedation.......2007-06-01
Derek Sivers said: "Get this or die in obscurity!" So I did.
You really only need this one book to get started........2006-02-03
It doesn't matter what your industry, product or service may be, the rules of PR are still the same and Guerilla Publicity does a fabulous job of starting at the very beginning and taking you step by step through everything you need to know; from writing outstanding press releases, to managing media lists to the absolute importance of following up once you have sent your kit out. I use this book as my PR bible, just last night I picked it up and flicked through for a refresher course. Not only does it provide the information but also the enthusiasm needed to launch a PR campaign and is a wonderful resource to keep on your shelf.
Review by Irene Watson, author of "The Sitting Swing.".......2005-11-12
The authors give the reader an insight to what to do next. A must read for anyone that needs publicity. Easy to read, but at the same time gives inspiration on taking the next step.
