Art-tastic!.......2007-01-10
This book on the history of art and why art is the way it is, kept my 7 year old spell bound. It created positive conversations about emotions and exaggerations in paintings. This book was originally for our 4 year old because she is more of the artist. She enjoyed the pictures but did not stay interested very long.
An excellent, gorgeous and highly accessible book.......2005-02-13
Disney Looking At Paintings: An Introduction To Fine Art For Young People uses Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto to show young readers the majesty and imagination present in great works. Full-color, finely reproduced images of classic artworks captivate the eye on almost every page. The text renders artistic concepts in readily accessible terms. Chapters address how shape, size, color, light and dark, motion, materials and more are applied in works of art ranging in style from impressionism to realism to modern art and much more. Simple quizzes help reinforce the lessons about art learned in this excellent, gorgeous and highly accessible book, superb for reading aloud to young ones or letting them discover on their own.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A retro review of the beginnings of the Justice League of America. Shades of Tower of Babel here, when they learn about the Martian Manhunter, an alien agent, and his secret files. This details the early relationships between Green Lantern, Aquaman, Black Canary, The Flash, and the aforementioned Martian, as well as the people around them.
As my son says, a great beginning.......2006-12-06
We watched Justice League and Unlimited on Toon for many years while my son was growing up. Now he collects the graphic novel collections of the comics, and we are re-reading them together.
My son like this one because it tells the story of the beginning of the Justice League, focusing on Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Black Canary, with a little sprikling of other superheroes ala the Justice League Unlimited Show.
The story (originally JLA: Year One #1-#12, 1998) tells a lot about the interaction with the five, and how they gain respect with the rest of the heroes and start working as a team. It also has an excellent story arc, about the alien Appelaxians, their battle for supremacy amongst themselves and then for control of Earth.
Our favorite characters in this one are Green Arrow and the Martian Manhunter (me) and the Flash (my son). I think J'onn goes through the most transformation, the most discovery, and the Green Arrow keeps popping in and out. My son likes the Flash because he takes charge, but also cracks jokes (he's remembering the TV show too).
The Vandal Savage part of the story was my least favorite, he seemed shoe-horned into the story, only there to fix a couple of pieces in the stoy line.
On to New World Order, JLA graphic novel #1.
Great DCU intro!.......2006-10-03
You know, I'm pretty surprised that all these other reviewers were so disappointed with this book. It was what introduced me to Mark Waid and what turned me into a DC Comics fan. Before I read this, I was a strictly Marvel reader. The art is great, and the character interaction is top notch. That is actually what I like most- character interaction. Mark Waid is a great conversation writer, and I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes good characterization. If you need huge Earth-shaking storylines like 'Kingdom Come' or the like... you should probably A)tone down your scope a little and B) skip this book.
Weak.......2006-05-18
Mark Waid is a hard writer to like. He gives us Kingdom Come, which is a masterpiece of art and literature, and then he backslides into something like this.
The stories are disjointed, and hard to read in one sitting. My suspention of disbelief is stretched to it's limit with the "villain of the week" story arcs and poorly conceived, half-hearted characterizations.
Also disappointing is that Waid likes to recycle his own plots, as many elements from this paperback find their way into the JLA monthly. (A core member of the league secretly builds profiles on his teammates, which are later stolen by an enemy who uses the information to strategically take apart the team. The issue of mistrust is resolved when everyone reveals their secret identity. No joke, he used this exact plot twice.)
Barry Kitson has also seen better days, as his art here seems rushed and sloppy. I wonder if good art could've saved this one. (Is that what happened with Kingdom Come?)
Avoid this one if you can.
It is ok, but I really wanted to love it........2005-12-08
The thing with this book is that its awesome at times, perfect even, but in other places it seems to really miss the mark.
The interaction between the five original members of the JLA are great, but the problem arises when dealing Batman and Superman. Batman is so totally detached that its amazing he ever joined the league. To be honest, his reaction is true to the character, but it could have been played out further. That would have been a lot more interesting than the glorified cameo we get.
When it comes to Superman, well he seems either too detached and arrogant or too much of a pushover, neither of which seem true to the character.
The Green Arrow subplot was also rather weak.
Still, it is a decent read. Borrow it from someone. :)

Think your last vacation was bad just because you spent a couple of nights in the airport? You got off easy! In this delightful anthology, some of the world's best travel writers, novelists and journalists -- Eric Hansen, Pico Iyer, Barbara Kingsolver, and 48 others -- offer up the agonies of their worst trips. With an introduction by Mary Morris and a final rebuttal by Jan Morris.
Customer Reviews:
Give this to your traveling friends.......2007-01-25
This is one of the most entertaining travel books I've ever read. A perfect gift for friends who love to travel. On the other hand, it may convince the timid to stay home!
The Worst Writing of Great Trips.......2006-07-27
As a person who loves travel writing, I happily purchased, "I Should Have Stayed Home," on a recent outing.
That was a mistake.
From the very beginning, uninspired writing met uninteresting events, and continued on until the last deflating note. I wish I could say that there were some redeeming stories in this collection, but I could not find them. For example, the best written tale, by Suzanne Lipsett, explained how she was ostracized by a couple after giving the young lady of the duo a haircut that her boyfriend hated. Not exactly the inspiration for an Indiana Jones movie.
If you like your travel writing to contain a whopping dollop of boredom with a garnishing sprinkle of revulsion, then this book may be for you. If not, then quickly scout the exits and make a break for the door.
Disappointing.......2002-06-22
The backcover text describes this book as a "...hilarious anthology...". However this is not a humorous book, let alone a hilarious one. The stories, written in the literary equivalent of a monotone, are simply dreary tales of other people's misfortunes, which after a few chapters become tedious. One particularly unmemorable story was entirely devoted to the author's encounters with human excrement in Nepal. The book's anthology format - a different "great writer" for each chapter - works against it. There is no consistent style, unless one considers bland writing a style. It _is_ possible to take travel misadventures and put a humorous spin on them (Carl Franz, "The People's Guide to Mexico", which is a great guide to boot) or even turn them into high comedy (Dave Barry "Dave Barry Does Japan"), but the authors of this book fell far short of the mark.
Humorous Spins on Disasterous Trips.......2000-06-07
This is a must-read for anyone who has ever bought a ticket for the wrong bus, ordered a tractor on toast, or mistaken a brothel for a bargain pensione.
One hilarious, laugh-out-loud episode after another! A great companion reader to have along on your next vacation abroad. Good variety of locales, plots, and writing styles.
I Should Have Avoided Reading This Book.......2000-03-28
The stories in this book fall into one of three catagories:1. Gross - vomit, cockroaches, excrement. A little of this goes a LONGway. And believe it or not, once you've read one fire ant story, you've pretty much read them all. 2. Dumb - Helen Gurley Brown's husband's shaving cream explodes in his suitcase. And then she has to stand in line in Madras, India to upgrade their flight from economy to first class. Oh the agony! 3. Irrelevant - stories that begin by saying something to the effect "Well, I never really had a bad experience but..." and they go on to describe a fairly mundane event. (Isabel Allende and Barbara Kingsolver in particular.)
I have more interesting travel stories than most of these people! The book was disappointingly dull. For a funny read, with some grim tales to tell, get a copy of "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson, who describes his and a friend's adventures on the Appalachian Trail.

Issues in Feminist Film Criticism (A Midland Book)
ASIN: 0231104979 |
Book Description
-- Film Quarterly
Using biographic, historical, and textual analyses to elaborate an alternative, feminist cinematic tradition, this groundbreaking study presents an exploration of the impact of three French women filmmakers: Germaine Dulac, Marie Epstein, and Agnes Varda.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful fascinating study of French film!.......2004-09-01
Dr. Flitterman-Lewis has truly written a fabulous well-researched book about three very different French female filmmakers. Germaine Dulac films are often lost in today's film criticism because they were silent films. She was ahead of her time even without sound. The images itself are memorable. She focuses Marie Epstein's La Maternelle about motherhood, poverty, abandonment and life in the streets of France. La Maternelle was one of the first film using dialogue. It would have been more interesting to read about the live of these two women who are no longer around particularly why Marie Epstein never became a mother herself. Germaine's life is even more interesting for other reasons. Of course, the final French filmmaker is Agnes Varda and her film, Vagabond. While I loved all the films presented in her book, Varda speaks to us about why she directs and her motivations. It would have been complete with a detailed biography of Marie Epstein and Germaine Dulac. This information of their own lives would help us understand why they wrote and directed their films. But this book is strictly for film buffs and French enthusiasts.

Product Description
Among the first books ever published was the 1474 translation of the Game and Playe of the Chesse. Over the next 400 years, significant chess books would appear, but the overwhelming number of titles on the subject appeared in the 20th century and continue unabated. By 2003, over 35,000 volumes on chess in a variety of languages had been published, with approximately 14,000 English language works published from 1960 onward. For the librarian, collector, or chess enthusiast, the immediate task comes in finding which of these many volumes are worthwhile. This work provides an objective and informative look at some of the best chess books published in the period 1901 through 2000—and gives numerous examples of the games, with diagrams that appear in them. Inclusion criteria were popularity, longevity, critical acclaim, influence, definitiveness, historical importance, authorship and reputation. All were published in English (or use figurine notation). Each entry includes bibliographic details followed by a description of the book, with information on the author or authors, why the book is important, and background information on the publication.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Backstory.......2005-07-25
Dunne provides nice backstory to the classic/most popular chess books of the 20th century. Dunne often discusses the motivation behind an author's decision to write one of the classics. Dunne also goes into some detail about the contents of each book on his list, and if you don't own one of the listed books, Dunne's comments put the book in to perspective with other chess books of the genre. For example, Tarrash's THE GAME OF CHESS is discussed, and Dunne puts some historical perspective on this book with resepct to other classics of that era.
Different editions of each book are discussed.
A few drawbacks:
(1) Dunne's HOW TO BECOME A CM was included on the list, and although it is a very good book, it was a bit egotistical of Dunne to include his own writing. This one is tough to call because HTBACM was a classic in its day.
(2) There are not enough photographs.
Dunne's house was burned down a few yeas ago, and he lost his wife and grand-daughter in the flames, along with most of his chess book collection. Perhaps if so many of Dunne's books were not lost in that blaze there would have been more pictures in this volume?
This is a nice addition to any chess library.

Book Description
Praise for the first edition of Up Your Business!
"Dave Anderson has hit another home run! Up Your Business! is an invaluable, highly readable guide that should be on the desk—and in the mind—of anyone demanding top-level performance from themselves and others."
—James Strock, author, Reagan on Leadership and Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership
"Up Your Business! is a powerful blueprint for companies looking to take their business to the next level. It is one of the most powerful books on business and leadership I have ever read and will be a major component of Saga Communications' leadership training."
—Warren Lada, Senior Vice President, Saga Communications, Inc.
"Once again, Dave Anderson puts it all together in a way that almost makes you think he's been looking over your shoulder all these years. Chapter two alone, 'Abolish Corporate Welfare: Create a Culture of Merit,' is worth the time it takes to read the entire book."
—Mike Roscoe, founder and President, Horizon Communications
"Finally . . . a business book that gets to the heart of what matters and creates usable templates that could help any business thrive."
—Roxanne Emmerich, author, Thank God It's Monday!
Customer Reviews:
A big help if you take it seriously.......2007-03-09
This is a great book for your managers. We are using it as a trainig tool through our entire dealership. It's a good read.
Great book for your leadership team.......2007-01-09
I'm in the car business and this is the best book that I have ever read about running my business. I bought a copy for each of my managers and have used the principles discussed in the book to make significant changes in my operation. I highly recommend this book for any retail business owner or manager!
Three Knock Out Books in One.......2005-12-27
This is 3 books in book. A Leadership Book, A Daily Hands On Template of required tasks, and above all a long term Step by Step Program of how to turn a business around. If anything it is a Roadmap To Success.
Unlike most business books I have read this one is a clear step by step instruction manual of what needs to be done, how it needs be done, and why it should be done. Written in a down to earth style with a no nonsense approach it reinforces clarity of action which gets positive results. Dave has starts at ground zero and work outwards - an area of business activity ignored by most writers who are more interested in the theory of business rather then the nuts and bolts of running and holding a business together.
Thank you Dave
Best Thing Since Sliced Bread!!.......2004-06-27
In a recent Maximum Impact message by John Maxwell on "How to Overcome the Six Temptations of Successful Organizations" he acknowledged the source of his message as coming from Dave Anderson's most recent book, "Up Your Business".
I wanted to see what other pearls of wisdom Dave had to share so I bought his book. I was not disappointed! Congratualtions to Dave on a great leadership book!! It is the best thing since sliced bread!!
I especially enjoyed Dave's direct, no nonsense, no-holds-barred style that identifies the entitlement culture that much of our society has bought into and his get-tough advice on how to replace it with a merit culture.
Dave's insights and pearls of wisdom were huge for me as I have more than 38 references penciled in the front of the book that I am taking to the bank.
It's About Time...and Success.......2004-04-22
It's about time someone cut through the pablum surrounding sales strategies, tactics, and all the rest and got to the heart of the matter. We have truly met the enemy...and it is US. In 'Up Your Business' Dave Anderson takes the blinders and the gloves off and offers a practical, honest, straightforward guide for effective management in the automotive industry (or any other people/sales/customer endeavor).
In his usual 'tell it like it is' style Anderson has created the BEST management book I've read in over 15 years of directing sales departments in dealerships. Whether your store sells 50 or 1500 cars a month you'll gain some new insights from the book - and you'll walk away with a new and honest appraisal of your own abilities and efforts.
I couldn't recommend the book more. The best part is...Not only will 'Up Your Business' fulfill its title's promise in your business, it's just a flat-out great read!
