    Book Description

The first anthology of its kind, Manifesto features over two hundred artistic and cultural manifestos from a wide range of countries. The manifesto, a public statement that sets forth the tenets of a forthcoming, existing, or potential movement or "ism"—or that plays on the idea of one—became in various modernisms a crucial and forceful vehicle for artists, writers, and other intellectuals to express their ideas about the direction of aesthetics and society.

Included in this collection are texts ranging from Kurt Schwitters's Cow Manifesto to those written in the name of well-known movements—imagism, cubism, surrealism, symbolism, vorticism, projectivism—and less well-known ones—lettrism, acmeism, concretism, rayonism. Also covered are expressionist, Dada, and futurist movements from French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and Latin American perspectives, as well as local movements, such as Brazilian hallucinism.

Influential, startling, unsettling, amusing, and continually engaging, these modernist manifestos give voice to a fascinating array of ideas and opinions that will prove invaluable to scholars and students of nineteenth and twentieth-century art, literature, and culture.

        THE WORLD LOVES LUCY!

Five cents is a bargain for great advice. Especially when it’s coming from Lucy Van Pelt! So what if she has a reputation for being a little bossy, a little crabby. And when she pulls that football away from Charlie Brown (just when he thinks this time he might actually kick it) she’s really doing it for his own good. These sorts of things build character. So join Lucy and the whole Peanuts gang in this wonderful new collection of old favorites–and you’ll see that as long as you do exactly what Lucy says, everything will be just fine!

This fun-filled book has vivid and funny strips! I recommend it for anybody who loves Peanuts.

5 out of 5 stars Finally good Peanuts-strips collections !.......2002-08-20

It is hard to believe that the most popular comic strip characters in the history have been treated so wrongly in the past. You could buy tons of merchandising, but the true essentials, being the strips themselves, were published at random... until now !!! Thank God that this editor is publishing complete and chronological runs !!! A full year per book, and the "sundays" in colour : what else do you need ?
I only regret that only 2 books are published every year : at this rate it will take 25 years to complete this edition !

        5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2002-03-26

How can you go wrong with Peanuts?

In this set from 1996 you get: Rerun's first day at school, Reruns first dog, protests against fishing, what happened in WWI, Charlie Brown going to a dance, the revelation of Woodstock's royal lineage, and much more.

Keep your nickle. This bit of advice is on me: This is a bit of great humor. Do whatLucy says, and get this book!

This is the next installment in the regressing yearly strip reprint series. These are from 1996. The dailies are un-colorized (unlike the previous book) and the Sundays are in color.

                      Book Description

A beautiful baby deserves a beautiful belly.

It's the hottest fashion statement around among young, hip moms-to-be, and a cool new way to say, "I'm pregnant and proud!" This fun kit contains everything an expectant mother needs to make her belly the talk of the town, including six pots of body paints, two brushes, stencils, a two-sided stamp, and a sheet of colorful temporary tattoos. The instructional book offers creative ideas for themes and designs, suggests ways to involve family and loved ones in the decorating activities, and shares entertaining stories and photos from belly-painting moms across the country.

2 out of 5 stars Great idea, lame execution.......2006-12-02

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is because it inspired me. It was a cute gift from my mom, but the paint colors are AWFUL. The brush it comes with is WAY too stiff. The stencils pictured on the box are not the ones it comes with. They could've used the book to SHOW designs rather than name ideas, but they didn't. I agree with the first poster. Go out and buy your own body paints and brushes and do it yourself. There is no white or black!? How can you mix pink?? Lavendar?? Soft pastel colors?? Come on makers... put some effort into your product.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!.......2005-10-18

This "kit" was a complete waste of money. The book included is completely ridiculous, and really doesn't offer *any* great ideas that a group of women couldn't come up with on their own (for example, their list of themes includes "America," "Baby's Name," "Curtains" (what?), and "Emoticons"). In addition, the four colors of paint (blue, green, yellow, red) do not allow for a great deal of creativity, not to mention the fact that the paint was so dry that it was essentially impossible to use. I'm glad I purchased additional body paint (white, black, and gold) from a costume shop; without it, we wouldn't have been able to do this project. The stencils were also pretty pointless; they are made of hard plastic, which would be difficult to contour to a pregnant belly if you decided to use one. We came up with our own design (Tree of Life) and it turned out much more beautiful than any of their samples. Bottom line: Don't waste your money!!! Go buy some body paint at a costume shop and come up with your own idea!

Noriko Ohtake's CREATIVE SOURCES FOR THE MUSIC OF TORU TAKEMITSU is a brief (-page) catalogue of the great Japanese composer's inspiration. Published in 1993, it covers most of the career of Takemitsu, who tragically died before his time in 1996. Much of the work is based on the composer's own statements in interviews, and is a good glimpse inside the mind of a man one often thinks of as taciturn and shy.

Ohtake begins with a discussion of the composer's early years and the formative influences that led him to his singular style. His relationship with the musical aesthetic of America is presented as very strong, to the point that he identified with the U.S. and felt shame of his native country. Nonetheless, there were a few Japanese musicians whose friendship Takemitsu valued, and Ohtake sketches their biographies and how Takemitsu came to know them.

Any fan of Takemitsu's work knows that certain things frequently occur again and again in his titles. In the chapters "Nature", "Dream, number and water", and "Words and music", Ohtake traces the genesis and evolution of these references. Many Takemitsu fans know, for example, that "Garden Rain" took its title from an Australian schoolgirl's poem, and "Toward the Sea" was written for Greenpeace, but this reviewer never suspected Takemitsu's considerable appreciation for French literature.

Takemitsu's works were often changed to suit the particular temperments and styles of the performers. In the chapter "Friends" we meet some of the musicians who collaborated with Takemitsu. I was happy to learn the dedicatees of many notable works from the 1960s and 1970s. The final chapter in the work covers Takemitsu's piano music. Takemitsu wrote only a handful of pieces for solo piano, but there is one for each of his stylistic periods and so Ohtake can use them to illustrate Takemitsu's biggest concerns at each point.

The liner notes for Takemitsu recordings tend to be so flimsy that recourse to published scholarship on his music is generally essential. One's first stop should be the comprehensive THE MUSIC OF TORU TAKEMITSU by Peter Burt (Cambridge University Press, paperback 2006). This work of Ohtake's on Takemitsu's inspiration is, however, very enlightening and is well worth looking through for fans of the composer.

                                  5 out of 5 stars They're learning!.......2002-11-30

Volume 6 covers Invasion, Planeshift, Seventh Edition, and Apocalypse. As usual, this volume only deals with expansions released since the previous volume of the encyclopedia. If you've *never* collected previous volumes, you might want to look into _The Complete Encyclopedia of Magic: The Gathering_ instead (which is no longer complete, what with the expansions released after the summer of 2001).

Before launching into the expansion chapters, the usual introductory material includes 'how to use this guide' and a Collector's History - a few paragraphs of introduction plus the usual Magic timeline, including the 'for beginners' decks (e.g. Portal), the basic sets, and the expansions. The introduction to the Collector's History gives the roll call and price list for the Power Nine - the most notorious and expensive cards of them all: Black Lotus, the 5 original Mox cards, Time Walk, Timetwister, and Ancestral Recall.

Each set of cards covered in Volume 6, as usual, is provided with an introduction, the style of which has been updated to make it more useful. Each introduction begins with 'At a Glance': Release Date, Size (number of cards), Featured Mechanics, and The One-Sentence Story. For example, Featured Mechanics for Invasion lists 8 features: multicolored spells, kickers, Dragon Legends, dual lands, Kavu, and 'divvy' cards. After 'At a Glance', each introduction continues with the kind of material provided in previous volumes, still broken into segments but now given a framework and consistency by conforming to At a Glance. The framework begins with the story segment (a few paragraphs fleshing out the one-sentence version), the development segment (design history), individual segments for each of the entries in the Featured Mechanics list, concluding with Standout Cards. All the segments are interspersed with images of the relevant cards. After the Standout Cards discussion, of course, we come to the main body of the chapter for a given set: the cards.

The individual cards for each set are listed in alphabetical order; they're shown at about 3/4 actual size. The versions of Magic that included those cards (at the time of printing) are specified, as well as any errata. The card lists' images are enough to hold the attention of even a casual collector, since the flavor text is legible and the artwork is printed well.

The introduction for the 7th edition chapter adds a new item: a table listing Cards Removed from the Basic Set (compared with 6th edition): 31 each for white and blue, 35 for black, 26 for red, 24 for green, 24 artifacts, and 6 lands. (On the bright side, Serra Angel has been brought back - I thought it was gone for good.)

After covering the individual sets, the book gives an overview of 2000 World Championship decks, this time including photographs of the World Champion and the other 3 quarterfinalists. The book concludes with a "Deckbuilders Indexes" section, as in the earlier volumes of the Magic encyclopedia.
