The Living Tradition.......2000-12-30
Nigel Pennick sets out to disprove those authors who write about guising customs and traditions only in the past tense, and to show that they are very much alive all over Europe. He traces the history of the use of masks and 'guises' from ancient Greek theatre, beserkers, mummers, carnival and dancers. he explains that the ritual disguise allows an individual to temporarilty take on a new role, rituals having no individuals but only roles and functions. Guising is a transformative act, teh guiser stepping out of time and into the otherworld- an act today as valid as it ever was. This is an absolutely fascinating read, full of information and insight. I would highly recommend it to both magicians and folklorists everywhere.

Can't get enough man-slashing, het-hating action? Check out this dangerous volume, which brings together two earlier collections of the adventures of Diane DiMassa's popular independent comic. Join coffee-addicted lesbian terrorist Hothead Paisan on her restful vacation in Provincetown, and learn how she deals with gawking straight couples. Watch her surgical assault on scary male doctors. Admire her preventive treatment of rapists. Hothead Paisan goes where the rest of us only dream of going: "Sentenced to life in a rich white banker's scrotal sack," she takes revenge on the gapers and gropers of the city streets, offering her potent "Blow-You-Away Job" in the form of grenade, gun, and Lysol attacks. But she has a softer side, too, as shown in her devotion to her cat, Chicken, and her wise old grandmother. Not for the faint of heart or the satire-challenged. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Hothead Paisan, the over-caffeinated, media- crazed psychotic lesbian "with scary hair and a fetish for guns, grenades, mallets, and sharp objects," returns for more search-and-destroy missions and preventative homicides! A cult favorite, The Complete Collection combines Hothead Paisan and Revenge of Hothead Paisan with new strips in a single volume for the first time.

Hot Head for Prez.......2007-04-17
I love this book. It's hard to put down & is a great comfort when the world seems grim. A must have & a must read. Diane DiMassa is truly gifted.
Read it.......2006-07-25
Hothead Paisan keeps me sane.
I would probably explode out of tension and frustration if it weren't for her and my own cat.
Hours of Fun!.......2005-06-13
This is a great book for any rainy day. You can open the book to nearly any page and get wrapped up in Hothead's story all over again. I bought this book years ago, and I am still picking it up and having fun with it all the time.
Hothead is the ultimate revenge fantasy for any oppressed female. DiMassa's art is distinctive and entertaining.
I can only imagine what HH would think of the current state of this country...
A bit patchy at times, but still wonderful..........2004-11-07
This is a wonderful underground and quite subversive comic premised around overthrowing patriarchy and phallocentric society. DiMassa is witty and bold and clearly very angry with a world that has and continues marginalised women and create normalising barriers for non-hetrosexuals.
While the work is clearly tongue-in-cheek and based on exagerrated fantasy, the truth resonates, and DiMassa has a wonderful way of saying and doing exactly what all women have wished they could do. The characters are wonderful, particular Chicken, Hothead's lovely yoga-esque cat and her blind but centred friend Rox. It is definitely not as violent as I had imagined and much more plot driven, which is good.
The Complete work chronicles an entire comic, and while the work at the beginning is quite basic, the middle section is an absolute joy to read. However, the final section is somewhat patchy and difficult to follow, as Hothead slips into depression and seeming hallucination. The art progressively becomes more refined, and was very funny at times.
Overall, the entire piece was better than I expected, let down only by the confusion shrouding the final sections of the work. Nevertheless, a favourite comic collection of mine, to be read when I am feeling particularly inflamed by societal inequalities.
NO GUILT!.......2002-04-28
I've read this book through about twelve times (and that's a lot... it's a big book!) and gotten several friends hooked on it. It's gory and gross and violent and completely over the top. The ultimate angry Riot Grrrl feminist takes revenge on the sexist jerks of the world.
Anybody who's ever experienced the unfairness of the world and wished they could take revenge will love this book. It's simply the most fun book to read you'll find, but at the same time there are real insights here, things that will make you stop and think, things that will make you see the life a little differently, if only for a few minutes. And plenty that will make you jump up and yell, "YES!!" But it really can't be described in a review. You just have to experience the awesome power of Hothead for yourself.

Just Plain Fun.......2005-10-04
First of all, it's painfully clear that there are people out there who spend their lives searching Amazon for books containing the word 'Republican' solely to pop single stars on reviews to bring down the ratings. Shame on them!
If you have any sense of humor at all (in which case you probably are a Republican), you will enjoy this well-written and hilarious peek into a culinary niche where few dare to tread.
Even though I have not made a single recipe from this book, it is one of the few cookbooks I own that I've ever read from cover to cover. It is delightfully funny and very tongue-in-cheek (although there is, of course, no recipe for tongue).
Since Republicans are the inclusive party (something certain people don't want you to know), the book also includes recipes by Democrats which are clearly (and thoughtfully) indicated by an elephant under a circle with a backward slash through it.
Note to Suzanne Grayson Townsend: please write more!
Extremely funny and useful.......2004-12-13
Not just for your republican friends. Democrats will get a good laugh from this one too but surely won't enjoy the recipes as much. These will be Christmas gifts for many of our friends but shhh, don't tell them.
Yes it's true!.......2004-12-09
This book sums up the attitude that allot of Americans seem to have today. Live the life of gluttony and ignore what's good for our future.
Here's something else to blame on Slick Willy ! ! !.......2004-08-05
A Republican cook book?
Only in America. I've been to lots of bean bakes, goat ropings, tribal fairs, wooly sheep ridings and Republican teas -- and until now I thought Republicans lived by caterers alone. I'm shocked. Can America be a global hyperpower if Republicans learn to boil water without burning it, to cook macaroni and even make meat loaf?
Meat loaf? Would you believe a 'Bacon Cheeseburger Meat Loaf'? Granted, it's probably a little more tasty and nutritious than the meat loaf the Republican Sheriff Joke feeds prison inmates in Maricopa County. But then, these are seriously delicious recipes. By the same token, there isn't a recipe for any Democratic beans, hot dogs or baking powder (cowboy) biscuits. In other words, this is an Original Meaning all Natural Law and Back-to-Basics Republican cookbook. It'll do your Constitution good.
After years of cooking the books, it's nice to know Republicans can now cook an "Irene Halligan's Mighty Mac and Cheese" dish. As for secrets, this book also explains the mystery of those WMDs no one could find in Iraq; the initials really mean 'Whiskey of Much Delight' and refers to Jack Daniels. For the Born Again crowd, there's a 'Jack Daniel Died for Your Sins Whiskey . . . recipe.' It calls for "2 tablespoons Jack Daniel's Black Label." Now, you just known any Democratic recipe would start with "1 quart store brand vodka . . . "
It's a fun book. You you want to know just how authentic it is? Let me tell you. Right up front, in the "Acknowledgements," Townsend blames the Clinton administration.
I kid you not.
She writes, ". . .a special and heartfelt thanks to the Clinton administration who taught me the most valuable lesson of all: in America, you can get away with anything, including a cookbook called 'How to Eat Like a Republican'." It's almost as if Dick Cheney wrote the introduction.
It's a fun book. Republicans can have a ton of laughs reading about "Spotted Dick Nixon" (suet and raisins), "Pat Buchanan's Buffalo Right Wings" and "Rush's Mom's Fluffy Potato Casserole" (it explains why he's as smart as a boiled potato). Care for some "DAR Deviled Eggs"? How about an "Unimpeachable Peach Cobbler" in case Slick Willy comes to visit? Or an "Calvin Cooler" (named for the president, not the comic strip). Thirsty? Try Dad's Margarita" (4 ounces Jack Daniels Black Label, ice).
Maybe it's anominous omen for November, "If you can't stand the heat in the Oval Office, get into the kitchen." If that happens, look for a Democratic sequel next year, "How to Order Lunch at the Country Club without Sounding Like a Democrat."
Witty, Delightful and Fun!.......2004-07-14
Forget the carbs, forget the fat content - Go for a fun adventure into some rather unusual recipes of some high ranking Republicans! This little book is written in the style of a very talented new writer - sure to please your appetite in many ways!

Book Description
Golden quotations from the silver screen! These are the unforgettable words that made us laugh and cry, and perhaps even shaped our view of life and love. Accompanying the over 4000 brilliant citations are critical judgments of the most celebrated movies ever made, commonly misquoted lines, and statements by the stars, directors, and other cinema personalities. More than 1,000 headings encompass films from the pioneering silent era right up to today's blockbusters. Remember this comic exchange from Airplane? Striker: Surely you can't be serious! Dr. Rumack: I am serious. And, don't call me Shirley. What about Bette Davis's cynical, classic utterance as Margo Harrington in All About Eve: Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night. Every one's a winner.

Book Description
The music industry is in crisis. Sales are down, artists restless with long-term contracts, and consumers angry at escalating CD prices. New technologies are rapidly changing the way music is recorded, sold, and enjoyed. Although these challenges appear to be unprecedented, a look back at the last 100 years shows that the recording industry has always initially feared - but eventually profited from - rapid shifts in the way music is recorded, distributed, and performed.
Breaking Records gives a narrative history of American popular music and the pop music industry. Organized by decade, each chapter gives an overview of the major developments, technologically, commercially, and musically, for all types of popular music making. Technological developments, from the irth of radio and the phonograph to downloading, file sharing, the burning CDs, are described in relation to how they affected musicians and the industry itself. Key performers and their major hits are profiled by decade.
Breaking Records tells us the compelling story of how business and art have interacted, and soemtimes clashed, through a century of new musical developments. Students of pop culture and music history, music-business historians, and general fans of American music will enjoy this account of the growth, maturation, and world of American musical culture.

horrible.......2004-07-10
I'd like to know what kind of training this author has...completely subjective...no backing on any of his claims...pages and pages and pages of verbose garbage...it's hard to imagine that a publisher would support writing like this unless the author was paying off the CEO...
Too Much Information, Not Enough Knowledge.......2004-07-01
Basically this is a book in which the author, instead of using the tried and true method of using either graphs or tables to coordinate his information, decided to write everything out in long hand. The result is the reader getting his or her head over-stuffed with names, titles, chart figures, sales figures, years, etc. and finishing each chapter and finally the book with the feeling of having eaten too much rather than being nourished.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Educational.......2001-02-17
I must admit that until picking up this book, I had no idea that quilting was such an integral part of Native American culture. The little history we recieve on Native Americans had never touched on the power of quilts even within today's Native communities. MacDowell and Dewhurst have painted a comprehensive illustration of not only the beauty of Native quilting, but also the social importance of quilts as records and protectors of Native culture. The photographs and stories presented in this book are so eloquently presented that I could not put the book down. I leave it on my coffee table and have not ceased to attract the attention of every visitor.
Book Description
Most managers hate conducting performance appraisal discussions. What's worse, few feel confident in their ability to accurately assess the performance of a subordinate. In The Performance Appraisal Question and Answer Book, expert Dick Grote answers over 100 of the most common -- and most difficult -- questions about this vitally important but often misunderstood and misused tool, including:
* How should I react when an employee starts crying during the appraisal discussion . . . or gets mad at me? * Which is more important -- the results the person achieved or the way she went about doing the job? * Is there such a thing as a perfect performance appraisal form?
Many of the answers include a Hot Tip or Red Flag: a note to the reader making a particularly insightful suggestion. This book helps supervisors and HR professionals ease the pain of performance appraisal and use the process effectively.

Questions, Answers, and a Great Deal More.......2006-08-02
Although this book was first published in 2002, I only recently read it and, as my rating correctly indicates, I think it is an outstanding piece of work. Performance measurement is one of the most important and yet least understood business subjects and it is certain to become even more important during the next several years as organizations become more "virtual" and many of those involved with them become "free agents" or are at least more independent. Also, on average, people now make 7-9 job changes during a career. The average for those in my generation is half of that, if not less. Grote wrote this book primarily for managers who are responsible for measuring the performance of others.
A relatively recent and (in my opinion) promising trend is that, increasingly, one of the metrics used for evaluating the performance of a manager is how well she or he measures the performance of others. That is the subject for another book which Grote, perhaps, will one day write.
Given the substance of the material in this book and how Grote wishes to organize and then present it, the Q&A format seems eminently appropriate. He adds a clever variation: The inclusion of "Tell Me More" comments after his initial response to each core question. I greatly appreciate the personal, conversational tone which Grote establishes and then sustain in each of his three books, the other two being Discipline Without Punishment and Forced Ranking. He comes about as close as a business thinker/writer can to seeming to interact directly with his reader.
Obviously, this book will be of primary interest and value to supervisors but I also highly recommend it to those who are supervised. Now more than ever before, it is imperative to make crystal clear what expectations are and how performance relative to those expectations is measured, especially during interviews of candidates and then, once hired, during their orientation...which few organizations do well. (That is another book awaiting someone to produce it.) As Grote would be among the first to point out, the results of countless research studies which examine employee satisfaction concur that feeling appreciated, believing in the value of the work done, and having one's performance evaluated fairly and consistently are among the attributes which participants in the research studies considered to be most important. Also revealing is the fact that, depending upon which results are consulted, compensation was ranked anywhere from #9 and #14 in importance.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Grote's other two as well as Michael Ray's The Highest Goal and The Oz Principle co-authored by Craig Hickman, Tom Smith, and Roger Connors; also Mark Samuel's Creating the Accountable Organization and The Power Of Personal Accountability, co-authored with Sophie Chiche.
I use this system. I never want to go back. .......2006-01-09
I work for a dept. with a state government and Grote's comprehensive performance management system was implemented several years ago. It works! Takes the indecision, inconsistency, and the bias/subjectivity out of perform. mgt. It is systematic. This text is excellent & thorough. Addresses in practical ways MANY of the problems that mgrs. run into when doing performance evals. (your ratings are defensible when you have a difficult employee). I found that it was easy to read and to apply. It gives you knowledge & confidence. I have "highlighted" throughout this book and refer to it often. It is my Performance Eval. "bible". We also use Grote's Discipline Without Punishment (DWOP) system also. I recommend his book of the same title also. Excellent system. Definitely not "wimpy"! Takes the indecision, inconsistency, and the bias/subjectivity out of office discipline. It is systematic and defensible also.
a no-nonsense approach to performance appraisals.......2004-09-13
I found the book very easy to follow, and the principles and concepts were down-to-earth. The author gives a no-nonsense approach in performance appraisals, using common-sense and throws out all the other HR mumbo-jumbo. He also lays out a good argument for tying the PA to the company's objectives and missions, ideas on employee motivation (forget the "employee of the month" ideas), how to deal with difficult reviewees (those who just don't understand how their performance is bad), and the best way to handle performance planning meetings at the beginning of the year and the importance of these.
A book for new and old managers alike.......2002-10-23
Mr. Grote tells it like it is, and I loved his approach in this book. It's presented in a question & answer format where he presents a question that is just about everyone's mind who conducts performance appraisals for employees, and he answers it with a short answer then a longer and more detailed answer. The best line is when he says, "Supervisors put up with too much [stuff]otherwise writes very well and straightforward, and strongly pushed the responsibility for improvement back to the employee, not the manager. Thank you for liberating me! He spends a good deal of the book on performance planning as well, an often underutilized tool to set an employee up for success.
