5 out of 5 stars Beautiful words for any mother.......2002-06-05

If you like Mary Engelbreit, you'll like this. If you're a mom, you'll like it even more. I find myself looking at it again and again. I have also given it as a gift to my other fellow mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for myself, and glad I did!.......2002-03-06

I love Mary Engelbreit, and I love being a mom. So this book worked for me. It is a sentimental collection of artwork and quotations about the mother/child experience. It made me feel good, but I can't say that I read it every day. However, I am glad I have it. An excellent gift...for anyone who is a mom....including yourself. It just makes ya feel so good!

5 out of 5 stars I loved it so much I gave my copy to my mom!.......2000-05-16

This book is so loving of mothers! It really made me feel good to be one and to be able to recognize how wonderful my own mother is. Its' a great compliment to me to have someone say I'm like my mom!

5 out of 5 stars Words for Mothers to Live By - Touches the Heart.......2000-05-04

This is Mary Engelbreit's best yet! The illustrations are wonderful and classic Mary -- but the quotations are the heart of the book. Combined together, they make for a treasure. Thoughtfully and artisically arranged this book will be loved by all who read it.

    Book Description

Bill Amend does it better than anybody else. His ability to present middle-class family life in a way that?s consistently fresh, irreverent, and downright wacky is unsurpassed. If asked?and they are each day they open the more than 1,000 newspapers that carry his strip?Amend?s audience of 25 million readers would say the same thing. That committed and connected audience will be delighted once again to discover Who?s Up for Some Bonding?, the latest in a series that includes 18 previous collections and eight treasuries, amounting to nearly two million FoxTrot books in circulation. This time around, Amend?s antics with the Fox family include the artist?s invitingly skewed views of ?normal? life: children who are light-years ahead of their parents when it comes to computers, siblings who could teach the CIA a thing or two about covert and ?get-even? ops, and parents who stumble around in a slight daze as they deal with all the ?amenities? of the modern world.Jason, Peter, Paige, and their parents, Roger and Andy, deliver the laughs. They all bring their unique personalities and perspectives to the FoxTrot world, whether the subject is technology, tofu recipes . . . or a son convinced he could be the next zillionaire Martha Stewart. FoxTrot surprises. FoxTrot charms. FoxTrot always satisfies.

5 out of 5 stars Megadoses of Chuckles that Turn into Outright Laughter.......2007-02-18

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars Who's Up for Some Bonding? Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-19

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Episodes With the Fox Family........2006-09-11

Bill Amend's "FoxTrot" is one of the best comic strips currently published (it's one of my favorite strips). It is true that year-to-year some jokes are re-used, yet for me that tradition adds to the appeal of the strip. WHO'S UP FOR SOME BONDING? is a collection of FoxTrot scripts that appeared in 2002. This book is smaller than many of the FoxTrot collections, but it's also much less expensive than some of the longer and larger books. This collection includes strips about Jason's antics and preparation before seeing SPIDER-MAN, Jason's preparation before seeing ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Jason's plans to take over Martha Stewart's empire while she is in prison, Paige and her Mom having a talk about the birds and the bees while Roger takes Jason and Peter camping, Peter's Odyssey-dream parody, some non-Christmas holiday strips, and many more. WHO'S UP FOR SOME BONDING? is a great book to get anyone who is a fan of the strip or as a primer to introduce someone to the comic.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST STRIPS GOING TODAY.......2005-01-08

Fox Trot is one of my very most favorite strips. While I tend to read the comics mainly around the holidays, Foxtrot is one I try to keep up on all the time. Bill Amend has the two qualities that make a great cartoonist: First, a comical yet adept cartooning style and second: a very witty sense of humor. The Fox Family consists of Mom Andy, Dad Roger, sons Peter and Jason, and Daughter Paige. This cast tackles the situations that all families do in funny and often eccentric ways led by the brainy and altogether greedy youngest son Jason.

And While I mentioned holiday strips, Foxtrot consistently has some of the best Thanksgiving and Christmas strips every year and I always look forward to those. This is a strip that should be turned into a TV show! It's far superior to the lame "Family Guy".

5 out of 5 stars More excellent work by Amend.......2004-04-22

Amend never ceases to amaze me. Each strip is as good or better than the previous. I highly recommend this book, as Amend is once again in great form.

After his bestselling Word Search Puzzles for Kids, Awesome Word Search Puzzles for Kids, and Clever Word Search Puzzles for Kids, Mark Danna's out to baffle youngsters again--and they'll enjoy every second of it. These puzzles are wildly imaginative and ingeniously designed. Instead of the usual grid, each one consists of a picture that fits the puzzle's subject, including an elephant and a dinosaur. There are other twists too. Three puzzles don't have a word list, so children have to create one from the clues. "Rappin' Up the Week" asks solvers to fill in the rhymes of a humorous rap song. Rebus puzzles feature little drawings. To top it off, every puzzle contains a hidden message that kids will uncover once they've completed the search.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good coverage of self-directed teams.......2007-05-26

"Leading self-directed work teams" consists of 6 parts. The first part introduces the concept of self-directed work teams, it's history and especially the difference between traditional organizations and self-directed work teams. Part 2 gives a case study from Kodak. Part 3 talks about the assumptions that leaders in organizations have and how it affects the SDWT. Part 4 describes the role of the team leader and a description on what team leaders do day-to-day (there are actually 2 part 4s, which is kinda weird). Part 5 talks about problems and solutions and the final part gives some tests which you can do to see how suitable you are for a team leader (I need some minor changes, it says).

I loved the beginning of the book. The first couple of chapters were fantastic and I quickly finished part 1. I didn't find the case study interesting. I liked part 3 quite a lot, but then when the book went on I felt it was not getting much better. The author tried to think of concrete tools for a team leader to use, but somehow they didn't feel natural (like the 5 stages of team leaders). Near the end of the book, I felt something was missing from the book. I don't know exactly what it is, maybe the team member perspective, maybe more concrete tools. (simulation games?)

Despite the above critique, I recommend the book to anyone involved or interested in self-directed teams. Kimball Fisher wrote in a clear style which kept me reading the book. Theory was followed with concrete examples. It's not a lot of pages so it's easy to read in a relative short time.

I learned a lot from this book. I'm a promoter of SDWT in my organization and the book made me realize how difficult the transition is. How difficult it is for supervisors to adopt their new roles and for team leader to broaden their job responsibility. It clarified my experiences. SDWT are the future but the part towards them in long.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, But Not Ground Breaking.......2006-10-28

As other reviewers have noted, an interesting read for the military leader and "ops" guy alike. But at the end of the day I tend to lump this book together with the tedious, dime-a-dozen management specials out there. As a former military officer I'll be the first to toe the line and admit that a lot of what Mr. Fisher explores is right on target - just not new territory.

At the end of the day, a good primer (or refresher) but not entirely college math.

5 out of 5 stars All MILITARY Leaders Need This Book.......2001-07-21

***The second industrial revolution is definitely in full swing. As we progress from the traditional style organizational leadership and head towards team-building and progressive leadership, this book illuminates what will work. So many leaders in the military have failed to adapt to the cultural changes of the new millenium, and thus the failure to retain Officers and Enlisted alike. All military leaders must accept that fact that EMPOWERMENT is the key to organizational success. This book defines what empowerment is and how to effectively implement the "Self-Directed Work Teams." Covers what a true leader is how "barking direct orders" is not effective as empowering others to perform. Set boundaries instead of rules. I am a military Officer and have seen many times the follies that many Officers make when making leadership decisions. This book not only shows you what is wrong with the traditional systems, but also how to implement effective leadership.

*******A MUST READ FOR ALL MILITARY LEADERS AND CIVILIAN MANAGERS*** DEFINETLY A GREAT BOOK!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ALL AS A GROWING TOOL. READ IT, LEARN IT, USE IT!

4 out of 5 stars Lessons from an Experienced Practitioner.......2001-05-25

This book is a solid how-to manual for leading self-directed work teams. Kimball does a great job of explaining what self-directed teams are all about and how to lead them.

Leading self-directed team may sound like paradox, but these teams need a special type of leadership. This book goes beyond theory to explain the realities of making these teams really work. Easy-to-read with plenty of examples.

                * Mark Kelly, coauthor of MASTERING TEAM LEADERSHIP: 7 ESSENTIAL COACHING SKILLS

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-17

Kimball Fisher provides a revised, updated look at the techniques for successfully leading self-directed work teams (SDWTs). He draws on basic principles described in his earlier book of the same name. SDWTs are effective, and growing in popularity. Fisher focuses on how leaders must adapt to make them work. He emphasizes the need to truly empower and support workers. He underscores the importance of making the team adaptable to the work itself, rather than clinging to a particular structure. Fisher combines principles with examples and how-to tips that you can apply in your own organization. He provides good summaries of each chapter's highlights. We [...] recommend this well-organized, clearly written book. Product Description

African wild dogs get their target 80 percent of the time, whereas the lion and cheetah are successful less than 50 percent of the time. This book translates the success of those wild dogs into actions and behaviors that can make you a more productive leader. The authors developed their analogy during trips to game preserves in Botswana and South Africa over a 7-year period while working on a large-scale change effort with the public sector of the country of Botswana. This book takes the traits, characteristics, and behaviors of the animals that are most successful in survival and translates them to human groups. If you are a leader of a team, inside or outside of the workplace, this book will provide leadership insights and offer tangible methods of improving your team s effectiveness.

                    Book Description

Business Week recently reported that self-directed work teams are, on average, 30% to 50% more productive than their conventional counterparts.

The problem is that making the transition to a team environment requires a different type of leadership philosophy. This insightful book takes you through a sequential process that will enable you to:

                    * Manage the balance between the technical aspects of team functions and the dynamics of the human interactions that are at the core of any team's success.
                    * Focus on the communication process that will ensure the learning content is portrayed in a positive way.
                    * Run accurate pilot tests of improved team processes.

The closing chapter presents a checklist for leading successful transitions and serves as a handy reference guide. SPECIAL FEATURES:
