Everything You Could Ask About Jewish Symbols.......2003-03-21
As a crafter, particularly in needlework and quilting, I have found this book indispensable. I can find symbols for all kinds of concepts, and can also research what something I've seen on religious artwork and ornamentation. It really is a treasure.
Book Description
Kabbalah, an ancient mystical movement that arose within Judaism, is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic of all spiritual traditions. This Inspirations guide to the practice unveils the mysteries of Kabbalah’s fascinating belief system, and traces its most thought-provoking and imaginative themes, including: the creation myths; the Tree of Life and the sefirot; the significance of the Hebrew alphabet; the link with the Garden of Eden; and the mystic marriage by which married couples can contribute to cosmic well-being.
Book Description
This book invites the reader either to discover or to increase the understanding of Catholocism, on of the cornerstones of Western culture. The symbols of the Catholic Church are at once human and divine, material and spiritual, for they are the very Incarnation of the Word of God. Here Dom Robert Le Gall examines the people at the heart of the church, its saints and Biblical figures, the sacraments, songs, gestures, as well as sacred objects and the church's liturgical calendar.
Customer Reviews:
The meaning of symbols.......2003-07-21
Book is very nicely printed, beautiful pictures and information about major symbolism such asd what is Tabernacle, what is sacred vestments, why they dress green or pink, what is confirmation, what is anointing, etc. etc. Nothing probably new for practicing Catholic but very informative for non catholic or non-christian.
Perfect pictures.......2000-05-02
The book has the most fabulous pictures. They're not only of high-quality but also big in size showing details. The articles are of great assistance to the Catholics as well as the non-Catholics.

Book Description
The making of devotional papercuts is a relatively little-known aspect of traditional Jewish folk art and culture. While many ritual objects treasured today as "Judaica" were crafted from expensive materials, often by gentile artisans executing paid commissions, even the poorest Jew could afford paper, pencil, and penknife with which to make a papercut as a deeply-felt, personal expression of faith. Many of these works are gems of unaffected artistic creation. More than any other form of Jewish art, the surviving old Jewish papercuts evoke the spirit and lore of the East-European shtetl and the North African mellah. By the mid-20th century, however, the venerable Jewish papercutting tradition had become another lost folk art.
This lavishly illustrated, full-color volume features many Jewish papercuts from Eastern and Central Europe reproduced here for the first time. These, and such works from Middle Eastern, North African, and North American Jewish communities incorporate an unparalleled wealth of Jewish symbols. Joseph and Yehudit Shadur's discussions of these configurations constitute a basic presentation of Jewish iconography of the last three centuries. The culmination of over twenty-five years of their searches and research on four continents, Traditional Jewish Papercuts is the definitive work on the subject.
The Shadurs' initial, profusely-illustrated, Jewish Papercuts: A History and Guide, published in 1994, won the annual National Jewish Book Council Award for the outstanding book in the visual arts. Their present work, Traditional Jewish Papercuts: An Inner World of Art and Symbol, offers readers much new material, insights, and interpretations, with detailed chapters on sources, typologies, and techniques. A special chapter deals with modern imitations and fraudulent works aimed at the collectors' market. An expanded, selective bibliography and an index are appended.

The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son: The Transformation of Child Sacrifice in Judaism and Christianity
ASIN: 0691099677 |
Book Description
This volume presents the most important portions of Erwin Goodenough's classic thirteen-volume work, a magisterial attempt to encompass human spiritual history in general through the study of Jewish symbols in particular. Revealing that the Jewish religion of the period was much more varied and complex than the extant Talmudic literature would lead us to believe, Goodenough offered evidence for the existence of a Hellenistic-Jewish mystic mythology far closer to the Qabbalah than to rabbinical Judaism.

Symbols of the Kabbalah: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives provides a philosophical and psychological interpretation of the major symbols of the theosophical Kabbalah. It shows that the Kabbalah, particularly as it is expressed in the school of Isaac Luria, provides a coherent and comprehensive account of the cosmos, and humanity's role within it, that is intellectually, morally, and spiritually significant for contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
Kabbalistic Theology.......2001-06-14
Drob's work is a blend of Jewish Mysticism, psychology and contemporary philosophy. An introductory chapter provides a rationale for understanding the theosophical kabbalah in philosophical and psychological terms, and subsequent chapters each focus on a key Kabbalistic symbol: Ein-sof, Tzimtzum, Sefirot, Shevirah, Tikkun, etc. The overall result is a comprehensive Jewish mystical theology that provides rational/mystical answers to questions about the existence and nature of God, the creation of the world, the meaning of life, the existence of evil, and the purpose of individual human existence. Drob relates the Kabbalah to the work of Freud, Hegel, Jung, Derrida, etc. A serious and detailed treatment
Book Description
This book introduces the reader to the fundamental aspects of Judaism by exploring the ritual and cultural symbols of this religion. Rabbi Marc-Alain Ouaknin offers insightful commentary, and basic questions are answered clearly and concisely. Why is the yarmulka worn? Why are the scrolls of the law written by hand? Each chapter details also the various religious holidays and feasts according to the Jewish calendar.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book.......2005-02-11
This book is wonderfuly done. It is full of beautiful photographs depicting the symbols described. The accompanying passages are simply written, easy for someone not familiar with Judaism to understand.
Beautiful and thoughtful.......2001-01-25
This book has two advantages : first, it is so magnificently illustrated that it will be a pleasure to your eyes and second, its text is well writen and provides good information about Judaism and its symbols, although mostly at a beginner's level.
I do have a quite large library on the topic, but after I read it, I decided I had to buy a copy, for this book is really a must have for everyone interested in Judaism.

Book Description
In the turbulent political and social landscape of Revolutionary France, dress played a major role in defining and displaying new identities. What people wore was, in fact, a vital symbol of their allegiances and beliefs. Drawing on a wide range of documentary and visual sources, this book offers a vivid picture of the highly charged politics of Revolutionary appearances. The author explores the dynamic complexity of the new socio-political world, where the identification of who stood for what was such an urgent, if vexed, issue: where identical items of dress could stand for opposing political ideologies, where a variety of institutions - from local societies to the national assembly - tried to define the meanings associated with clothing, and where the clothes a person wore could seal their fate. Tracing the stories surrounding the liberty cap, the different manifestations of official dress, the tricolore cockade and the sans-culotte provides a new and exciting insight into the complexities and uncertainties that made up life in Revolutionary France and the political culture that it created.

Book Description
Ever wondered what George Washington put on his "To-Do" list? According to funnyman Jonathan Katz' book To-Do Lists of the Dead, it said check gums for termites and bury the hatchet.
Katz has done it again. During a layover at LaGuardia Airport, Katz entertained himself with his PalmPilot digital organizer by creating "To-Do" lists of famous-and deceased-political figures, entertainers, and rock musicians. The result: the hilarious To-Do Lists of the Dead.
This wickedly clever compilation shows celebrities' tasks that were completed and those put off too long. For example: FDR
1. Come up with a more upbeat name for the "greatest depression" (not done)
2. Think of one more thing we have to fear for speech (not done)
3. Insist on twin beds (checked off)
Katz's creative comic ingenuity in To-Do Lists of the Dead illustrates why he's one of the few comics HBO has showcased in its stand-up series.
Customer Reviews:
A half-hour's worth of groan inducing one-liners..........2001-09-14
I've seen Jonathan Katz interviewed on TV, and he is really really funny. Unfortunately, this book offers more "guffaws" than real laughter. The to-do lists have a *high* groan factor, such as these gems: Jim Henson: Try talking without socks on my hands; Norman Rockwell: Submit painting of severed head to "Saturday Evening Post," just to see their reaction; or Dwight Einsenhower: Rework "I'm Fond of Ike" campaign slogan. I bought this as a bathroom book that we could read for a while, and I read the whole thing in less than half an hour. Kind of a drag, I was expecting much more from him. I guess this could be a good $10 office grab bag gift, but that's about it.
Funny but insubstantial.......2000-12-02
If you're wondering what Jonathan Katz has been doing since Dr. Katz -- you'll have to keep on wondering because this book couldn't have taken more than a few hours to write. I'm usually a huge fan of Katz's work, but this one isn't quite up to his usual standards. Katz tries to carry the book on what is essentially a one-joke premise, which quickly wears thin. Don't get me wrong - it is a funny book, just a little insubstantial. If you're looking for the wit and offbeat humor you usually get from Katz, this light volume may disappoint. Still, (as one reviewer noted) it's not a bad way to waste a Sunday afternoon.
Dry Wit.......2000-10-04
This is a very enjoyable book, short and funny. It covers dead celebrities and others, and shows a dry wit. Not a howler of a book, but a great laugh nonetheless.
good, but old.......2000-09-27
I first heard of this book when Katz was on the Daily Show. It's a funny book, but some entries just make you want to groan sometimes. Definitely a good light-hearted read to waste a Sunday afternoon.
Book Description
How are children--and their parents--affected by the world's most influential corporation? Henry A. Giroux explores the surprisingly diverse ways in which Disney, while hiding behind a cloak of innocence and entertainment, strives to dominate global media and shape the desires, needs, and futures of today's children. Giroux takes the reader inside the company's vision of the full range of its media--its films, television, famous characters, and spin-off products, as well as its special school, Celebration. He reveals how Disney idealizes and implements its goal of building a world culture--based on innocence and morals, but insidious in its consumerist exploits.
Customer Reviews:
A cool breeze of hot air.......2007-05-09
I bought this book at Disney World, while working at Disney World because the clutter of commercialism and profiteering that was abusing my preconceived version of Disney as innocence and imagination was truly starting to make me detest everything Disney. I bought this book to back up what I felt in my gut was becoming a serious problem with the Disney Corporation.
However while I enjoyed sections of this book I found it to be mostly full of academic fluff. I expected it to be academic, and I bought it for that reason, but unlike other authors such as Neil Postman who can fill pages upon pages with words to make a point that could be made in one paragraph....Giroux cannot pull off the same feat. His points in the book are relevant and at times incredibly insightful...but everything in between is drivel. He seems to ramble on and on in between points with irrelevant examples and arguments that are never ending and repetitive. Most of the time the examples and arguments aren't nearly as insightful as the original point which kills his overall argument because he shoots his own credibility in the foot.
Good social/culture books on Disney are hard to find because they're typically dipped in a bias of some sort. The one thing I can say about this book is even though I don't buy some of Giroux's face critiques of Disney....his stance as more of a social critique is more appealing than simply a Disney lover or a Disney hater (although, obviously this book leans more in the hater direction). This has been a great book as a reference because his arguments are good, but it's dreadful to read though as a whole.
if looking for hard, solid facts move on.......2005-12-05
Giroux's book restates much of what he says in his other books (only with a few Disney anecdotes added). It took him two pages to say what could have been said in two sentences, and I found those same two pages popping up over and over again. I grew tired as I read, I was looking for substance. By the time I was half way through, I was skimming looking for him to say something new (he didn't)
If you're looking for dirt on Disney, read Schweizer's "Disney: The mouse betrayed" Schweizer's book includes documentation of a pedophile problem at Disney, lack of safety at Disneyworld, Eisner dirt, criminal activity, Disney's link to porn...
Disney trains consumers........2005-08-09
Once I read my daughter a book. At age 3, she turned to me and said "buy me the movie of that."
There was no movie of that book, but at age three, my child had already learned that a book means a movie, slippers, pajamas, and action figures. Instead of asking me about the book, or commenting upon the character, the only way she expressed her pleasure was in thinking about what we would buy as a result.
Say what you want about leftism and ivory tower this and that. Then look in your childrens' room, and their mountain of toys, and try to pick out which ones emphasize creative activity, and which are needlessly emblazoned with Disney and other characters. Buying is replacing creativity, in all of us. My child has learned this despite my best efforts. This book confirms what I didn't want to know.
Mickey is a Brown Shirt?!?.......2005-03-17
While Giroux asks a few good questions, I can't take seriously the suggestion that Disney animations are sexist, racist, or anti-democratic. Space limitations prevent a full rebuttal, but if Giroux went after Santa Claus, I bet he'd be a gluttonous, chain-smoking, reindeer abusing, elf oppressing, break-and-enter man with an unnatural fixation on young children. If you want to read how he does a job like this on "The Lion King" and other great movies, this is the book for you.
Academic, but spectacular in that regard........2005-01-04
The negative reviews of this book here have been fairly typical: It's apparently enough to call Giroux "leftist" and to point out his concern with class, race, and gender inequality. That alone completely impugns his work for many people. If you are one of those people, don't pick up this book. But if you're not, you've got to read this. The book is academic, and is written that way: Giroux packs the ideas in, especially in the beginning. But it is also the best piece of cultural criticism I've yet read.
Contrary to what people have been saying here, Giroux does not simply scream "race class gender inequality" over and over again. In fact I was impressed by how seldom he did make direct appeal to those issues. Instead, he focuses largely on the "public pedagogy" (I love that phrase) at work behind a company like Disney (if in fact there is any other company like Disney). Giroux's central idea is that we need an intelligent, critical populace in order to have a true democracy, and his central claim is that Disney actively works against both intelligence and critical thinking in the populace at large. His claim is well argued, and well substantiated. The consistent move towards "security" in our society is a troubling symptom of the kind of worldview that Giroux ascribes to Disney. And if he's right, it is imperative that we all start to think a lot more critically about Disney and other, similar societal influences.

Rock n' Roll is Alive and Well.......2004-01-01
This is the sheet music for what is, in my opinion, one of the best albums of the 21st Century. If you don't play guitar or piano, this is not the book for you, but if you do and you like rocking out to the Foos then pick this puppy up! The tab is spot on and it's set up so that you can sing it while still playing if you don't know the words off by heart (i.e., no lyric boxes at the end of the song). My only problem with this book is that there is no bass-tab because I play bass too, but that's okay because its been pretty easy to figure out the bass-lines if you can read music and have a decent ear.
Again, though, if you don't play an instrument, don't bother with this book because it will be completely useless to you.

Customer Reviews:
So simple to understand, excellent examples.......2007-10-05
I read this book after forming a C-Corp in California (using the Nolo guide). Although I am familiar with many biz deductions, this book walks you through many examples of deductions you can take if you plan ahead. I really like the "Day in the Life of..." examples of how you can maximize legal deductions pertaining to mileage. There's an excellent section on home office deductions. My husband, a self-admitted dummy when it comes to expense reports, taxes, etc., picked up the book after I was done, and even he understands the concepts. Already he has found deductions for his sole proprietorship and non-reimbursed employee biz expenses. Great value and so easy to understand. Highly recommend.
Great book!.......2007-09-26
Great book. Just one comment. A lot of the text in this book is identical to the text in Tax Deductions for Professionals. You don't need both books; choose one.
Excellent Information.......2007-09-02
This book has the information I have been looking for. It is the most detailed (and clearly written) of any books that I've purchased to help me know what is allowable (and not) as deductions for my small business. Helps in planning as well.
SUPERB!
Excellent Book !!.......2007-08-17
I just started my new business and this book is like boon to us. There is tremendous information for self employed professionals.
I would recommend this product better than Tax Mama's
Immediately Useful.......2007-03-29
