          Book Description

Punk body adornment, the most notorious and celebrated of recent styles among youth, emerged in the mid-1970s and has persisted in varying forms to the present day. This book illustrates the confrontational aesthetic of punk style, and examines in detail the symbolic meanings and subversive aspects of punk body art. Like members of previous subcultures, denizens of the punk subculture have created a coherent and elaborate system of adornment calculated to horrify the general public. An aesthetic of shock, negation, and cultural pessimism is revealed not only through adornment, but through music, art, dance, fanzines, and dramatizations of violence. The symbolic inversions, ritual pollutions, and carnivalesque antics of the punk movement violate the conventions of daily life. The anti- commercial, do-it-yourself ethos of punks, with their emphasis on parody and gender confusion and an interest in the exotic and forbidden, further challenge dominant cultural values and ideologies.
Along with a history of punk, PUNK AND NEO-TRIBAL BODY ART surveys the distinctive styles that have been influenced by punk ethos and aesthetic (including grunge, Gothic, and riot grrrl), and then examines the commercialization of punk style and how some punks reacted by adopting "neo-tribal" forms of body art inspired by non-Western practices in an effort to create an oppositional identity. Special focus is given to post-punk artist Perry Farrell, former lead singer of Jane's Addiction and founder of the annual Lollapalooza music festivals. Emphasizing individual meanings and personal aesthetics, the book explores the subversive and transformative appeal of tattooing, piercing, and scarification among youth and the ways that these forms of body modification are used to articulate feelings of estrangement, mark memorable events, signify a rite of passage, and individualize the body in an aesthetically pleasing and symbolically powerful manner.

          4 out of 5 stars Punk Promises.......2007-09-08

My two fascinations come together in this informative book: Punk culture and Body Art. If you enjoy these as well, I recomend. The only problem is that it is getting older by the day...copyright 1995. Good for old school review but nothing current available in the past 12yrs.

5 out of 5 stars great pictures and reasoning behind punk and tribal style.......1998-08-24

It was very informative as far as the philosophies behind the punk and neo tribal style. There is a big section on Perry Farrel (lead singer for Janes Addiction) and his reasoning behind punk and neo tribal style. It really makes you think. You don't have to be punk to enjow this book and it's contents. I would definetely recommend this book!

In this second and final volume of his Short Cuts series, Furuya revisits the gallery of bizarre comic characters introduced in the first entry: classroom bunny Mariko, obsessive Zero Boy, Bigfoot Muku, and stranger beings still. This volume contains a tsunami of surreal gags and teenage zaniness, all rendered in Furuya's distinctive mixture of innovative layouts and peerless art. A treat for fans of the cutting edge of comics art as well as anyone who wants the skinny on the latest Tokyo fads.

5 out of 5 stars Short, Sharp, Shocking.......2006-05-28

The premise behind Short Cuts is simple: gag stories that last a page or two, collected in a group of about one hundred. This simple set up never gets old or repetitive, however; Short Cuts can be at times mind-boggling, hilarious, subversive, puerile, cynical, thought-provoking, eye-opening, and sexy. The humor here, even with the language barrier to separate Japanese and English readers, almost always hits the mark if you have a taste for the absurd. However, Short Cuts, while childishly funny in some instances, can also cast a stark light on not only Japanese society, but human society at large. In one of the later Short Cuts, Usamaru, in the span of two pages, weaves a poignant tale about a woman trapped in a birdcage, yearning for her freedom as she watches the apathy of her bird captors day after day. In this comic, it's never revealed whether her dream of human society is just a dream or whether she's simply mentally unsound, desperate to spread a message about the value of liberty for all mankind.

And sometimes, there are sex jokes.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Satire..........2003-06-10

A great satirical look of Japanese pop culture. Definately not for kids though, lots of jokes about sex. But it helps the author to make his point thoroughly. One of the funniest things that sticks out in my mind is the daughter who commutes all the way to mars to go to the school with the cutest uniforms. I thought that was hilarious.

Great for people who like to have a critical eye turned towards Japanese pop culture.

          5 out of 5 stars Woah FUNNY.......2002-08-10

I can not believe how hilarious this book is. It's full of one to two page short stories, kinda like the weekly funnies in American Newspapers. They all basically focus on "cute high school girls" or ko-gals, which as the writer says seem to dominate japanese society, think of all the anime and manga focused on teenage females.

All I can say is these are some of the raunchiest, most perverted, and sick jokes I've ever read. So in other words HILARIOUS. This is definately a 16 and up age requirement. No if ands or buts about it. These jokes are just too perverted for anyone younger.

A thing to keep in mind, while many of the jokes are universal, many are not. There are quite a few cultural references that only japanese people would understand and you're left thinking "What? I don't get it." Thankfully, though I didn't realize it till I was halfway through the book, there is a summary guide in the back that pretty much explains all the hard to understand ones. After you read it and then read that particular story again later, it does become very humorous. :D

This is a great read for all us sickos out there that like reading this kinda thing. The art is a bit different from other manga, no big sparkly eyes, and that actually turned a few of my friends away from it before they even read any of it!! That's crazy. It is drawn very nicely though in my opinion, almost like Junji Ito's Uzumaki. Anyway get this book and you won't regret it. ^.^

              Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Combining the most depressing aspects of Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World, Ted Rall's 2024 shows us where turn-of-the-century corporate America is heading if we don't collectively wake up. Yet, like most of Rall's work, it's not a downer. Even when the reader sees a not-so-twisted reflection of his or her own life in Winston and Julia's horrifying misadventures in neopostmodern "Canamexicusa," it's usually more of a belly laugh than a gut punch. Tearing away at the shrouds of irony that keep us from experiencing our lives more directly for all their faults, Rall captures the essence of our reactions to soft oppression by having his characters repeat the mantra "Yes. No. Whatever." If the best criticism is satire, then 2024 is as good as it gets. --Rob Lightner

              Book Description

Move forward two decades. See the world as the giant media moguls and software companies have become our new big brothers. They want the best for us. They know what's best for us. And what's best for us we have chosen ourselves to be consumer heaven with no questions asked! A terrifying future where the past doesn't matter and no one cares! The motto to live by: 'yes, no, whatever!" Ted Rall updates and spoofs 1984 in a scathing look at where we could be headed. All Rall, guaranteed to kick your ass! Thought provoking? Try thought incensing! His best and most chillingly funny work yet! For mature readers. ³Astonishingly good! The ideas are so arresting and knowingly presented that you fall into the story in two pages. This is the work that Ted Rall's life and career have led up to. He knows this material intimately. 2024 should be required reading in every high school in America. It's just that scary.²

              Customer Reviews:

              3 out of 5 stars Not terribly original - a bit of a disappointment.......2007-07-04

Tad Rall's "2024" promises a look at "A terrifying future where the past doesn't matter and no one cares!"

It was not particularly terrifying nor particularly original. Rall says he is inspired by George Orwell's "1984", but he has really ran smack dab into Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" and George Lucas's "THX 1138" - a future society in which people are controlled by drugs, interactive video porn and other distractions. Not only is Rall's book derivative of the two I mentioned, he didn't even do work up to their standards of quality.

If you want brief entertainment (less than an hour for this reviewer to read the entire thing) and a "lite" version of some deeper works that covers no new ground and features artwork that reminded this reader of Matt Groening's "Life in Hell" series, than this may be your book. Heck, even one of his best lines is a direct rip-off of an old John Cougar album title: "Nothing Matters and What If It Did".

I give this one a "C-" - it is not totally without merit and maybe it will encourage a reader to pick up any of the other works that I have mentioned (including the John Cougar album) for better insight.

2 out of 5 stars Great ideas but could have been presented better.......2006-07-28

2024 is about mindless consumerism. People are driven only by caring about themselves and collecting "points" to buy useless stuff (really, isn't that where we are almost at now?). It was okay, it only takes about 45 minutes to read. I wish the art was better. I don't enjoy the ugly comics of today.

5 out of 5 stars Five Full Stars of Insight into Orwell and Our Times.......2005-10-12

This outstanding book brings out a forgotten side of the Orwellian nightmare, that is how it is not so much state terror or surveillance that gives us irrational and vicious governments as the unthinking and narrow time horizon of the captives. At bottom the citizens of idiotic systems allow the rulers to rule.

The Orwellian slogans of this book are ASSUMPTIONS PERMIT IMAGINATION, KNOWLEDGE IS IMPOSSIBLE, and EXPLOITATION IS BENEVOLENCE. These mind-killing notions all flow from Orwell's notion that "2+2=4. Once that is granted all else must follow", meaning that liberty and good living depend upon an honest and general commitment to reality. Rall then has the guts to point to the biggest threat of totalitarianism in the world today: POSTMODERN PHILOSOPHY. Rall playfully calls it "Neo-post-modernism", and then shows in serious detail how it can rob working stiffs of certainty, language, and purpose. With foundations of knowledge cut out from underneath us, we are all ripe for media manipulation by unscrupulous leaders.

Rall out-Orwells Orwell by cutting out reference to physical police state torture and "tortures" the protagonist Winston through non-thrilling entertainment. In short this is a perfect rendition of the vain, stupid dot.com corporate culture of our upper middle class and mass media. It is smart people without knowledge, culture without content, money without wealth or productivity, a libertine lifestyle without freedom, and directed, meaningless passions.

              4 out of 5 stars entertaining satire.......2005-08-24

If you've seen Ted Rall's gloopy-nosed box figures, you'll know it. He has a distinctive style and a distinctive wit, which is informed here by Orwellian nightmares as our "hero", Winston, not only copes with fickle neopostmodernism but embraces it. It is a thoroughly depressing vision of the future, but somehow it is funny too. So perhaps Ted Rall is part of the problem -- getting us to laugh instead of fight as we enter the slaughterhouse gates? Yes. No. Whatever.

1 out of 5 stars Not his best work..........2004-09-14

... But even Ted Rall's best work doesn't merit 5 stars. 5 stars should be reserved for the giants of the graphic novel medium, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore etc. I can understand how someone could like 2024, but five stars?!? I mean, come on!

I've liked Rall's comic strips. His drawing style is unique and fun, and he's an intelligent guy. He also has a lot of high quality ammunition to fire at this distopian comsumerist/techno crazy society. Yet, 2024 lacked the #1 thing I've gone to his comics for ... humor!

Yes, there were a few funny parts, but not nearly enough to justify this much ink shed.

As for the politics, I'm afraid he's just going to be preaching to the converted here.

Try his web page for his free stuff, and maybe his collections (the worst thing I've ever done) before buying this.

              Book Description

This fascinating study relates horror film to recent interpretations of the body and the self, drawing from feminist film theory, psychoanalytic theory, cultural criticism and gender studies. Applying the term "horror" broadly, this work includes discussions of black comedy, thrillers, science fiction, and slasher films. Central to this book is the view of horror as a modern iconography and "discourse" of the body. Badley's thought-provoking analysis of films by directors Tim Burton, Tobe Hooper, George Romero, Ridley Scott, Brian De Palma, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Jonathan Demme, and Clive Barker, will be of interest to both scholars and students.

4 out of 5 stars For the film scholar.......2002-01-27

This is a very interesting book on the concept of the body in the horror film. Badley uses popular theories like psychanalysis, the female gothic and "the Birth of the Clinic", in order to situate the image of the body (most particularly, the female body) in today's society. This book is aimed at the film sholar who is particularly interested in the horror/gothic genre (in film and literature) and women studies. She is a lot more easy to read than Barbara Creed!

                Book Description

                A. J. Racy is well known as a scholar of ethnomusicology and as a distinguished performer and composer. In this pioneering book, he provides an intimate portrayal of the Arab musical experience and offers insights into how music generally affects us all. The focus is tarab, a multifaceted concept that has no exact equivalent in English and refers to both the indigenous music and the ecstatic feeling associated with it. Richly documented, the book examines various aspects of the musical craft, including the basic learning processes, how musicians become inspired, the love lyrics as tools of ecstasy, the relationship between performers and listeners, and the influence of technological mediation and globalization. Racy also probes a variety of world musical and ecstatic contexts and analyses theoretical paradigms from other related disciplines. Written in a lucid style, Making Music in the Arab World will engage the general reader as well as the specialist.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book about Arab Music .......2005-03-05

This is by far the most accurate and extensive book written about tarab music along with its culture and art. Prof. Ali Jihad Racy examines the concept of tarab in many ways by dividing this book into 7 chapters. An introduction to tarab, the culture or tarab, Performance, Music, Saltanah, Lyrics, and finally a perspective look at tarab in the modern world.
I recommend this book for individuals seeking a deep and clear understanding of this underappreciated art and what classical Arab music is all about.

This is the type of book that you can use to make your character 400,000 times better than your friends! It goes indepth and allows you to make your character awesome! I strongly recomend this book for your group of nerds! Have Fun!

I like the critical hit tables, but sometimes it can get kind of annoying having to look up every 10 hits or so to figure out how much damage is done. It also has monster tactics in it which are good, but I really think this book is kind of underated.

I've had this book since the week it came out and I've never used anything from it. I offered my players a chance to vote on using the critical hit system in here, and they were overwhelmingly against it. Their main complaint was that if they were using it against monsters, then monsters would be using it against them, and it was too easy to die on dumb luck.

Perhaps it does make combat more realistic, but when a single swing of a sword involves 6 dice rolls and takes about 10 minutes to consult all the right tables and figure out all the modifiers and effects, I think you're doing something wrong. But, hey, maybe some people like that.

The monster tactics section is more useful, and if a DM uses it properly, he allows his monsters to become more than a ball of hit points that the characters have to reduce.

3 out of 5 stars ...And it fell over the edge........2000-01-09

This book takes AD&D too far for it to handle the situation properly. Each of the rules is tweaked to such absurd degree that I at times lost all recognition of what exactly I was reading. Unlike Skills and Powers which expands on the previuosly available data, Combat and Tactics adds far too much of the new and the unexpected. The mix of the combat rules is almost intolerable if you know of a game that used these rules first. It is as if TSR is trying to capture the popularity of other games by mimicking them. On the other hand, Combat and Tactics contains many useful materials - the much-needed critical hits table which allows for detailed damage, updated weapons tables ( sadly, these are less extensive than those in the Arms and Equipment), and several interesting variants of the initiative rules are explained in greater completion than they are in PHB or the DMG. But by the time the book is finished you will feel that now the combat is too drawn out and it becomes so much more of a chore - nothing of the elegant simplicity of the original rules. My advice - give Combat and Tactics a try, borrow it from a friend, copy the tables into your little notes folder, and use your judgement during combat.

                          Book Description

                          Praise for THE VISUAL INVESTOR

"John Murphy is one of a rare breed: an expert technical analyst who can actually write. This combination of skills helped make his Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets a classic. Now John has written the perfect overview aimed specifically at the stock investor who wants to learn technical analysis. . . . The Visual Investor offers a complete course in technical analysis, lucid enough to be accessible to the novice, yet thorough enough to range well beyond the basics. . . . [It] is must reading for the stock and mutual fund investor who wants to start incorporating technical analysis as a decision-making tool."
—Jack D. Schwager Author, The New Market Wizards and Technical Analysis

"The challenge of technical analysis is that it can be so technical. Now John Murphy, through The Visual Investor, explains everything for the common investor who wants to use technical analysis but doesn't want an overly complicated presentation."
—Thom Hartle Editor, Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine

"As my research group relies heavily on market analysis for its research product, we get numerous inquiries from professional investors on where to find books on this topic. John Murphy's The Visual Investor is my first recommendation to the novice investor as well as the investment professional. . . . [It] is the simplest and most helpful first look at markets that I have seen."

                          2 out of 5 stars Over rated!.......2007-05-12

Covers a broad range of topics, but does not get deep enough on any one point to be very helpful! I have to agree with the other (2 star) reviews the book is great for the beginner, but did not provide me with the insight I had been hoping for! I too would agree the book is getting a little out dated. It really pays to read the reviews!

                          2 out of 5 stars intro book.......2007-01-09

although an intro book, I did not find this very useful. there are a bunch of tools: volume, indicators etc. but I did not learn anything about how to use that info and actually buy a stock. for the same purpose, check out Intelyze, more expensive, but MUCH better tool.

2 out of 5 stars Visual Investor - Good Starting Point.......2006-03-20

For the novice investor this is a good starting point. It speaks to the beginner trader. It intruduces you to chart analysis, intermarket relationships and Stock and Market trends. However, it is 10 years old and some of the technology discussed is out of date. The basic concepts of oscillators, indicators and trends are solid information. The CD provided did not work in my system and I viewed it as worthless. I think it was created for an operating system well below today's standards. Interesting book and nice starting point for the beginner.

3 out of 5 stars Good starter book but that's it.......2004-02-01

This is a good starter book for the beginner, although it will be much too basic for the intermediate or advanced trader. But if you're just starting out, the first 133 pages will give you a basic introduction to the different technical indicators and chart reading. The next half of the book deals with the application of the indicators to mutual funds and other topics. I would just read the first 133 pages, and then go on to one of the more advanced texts now that you have some background, as this book by itself isn't enough to give you a good understanding of the subject. Murphy himself has a more advanced book, and Martin Pring also, and many others. Just be advised this is really just the beginning. The book is also a bit overpriced but I will say it's probably the easiest book I've seen recently for getting your feet wet on the subject.

Perhaps the most important part of the book is Murphy's mentioning that the head and shoulders pattern was investigated by the Federal Reserve and found to be statistically significant, and supposedly now is using the indicator to time its currency interventions. However, the real use of technical analysis is not that the patterns mean anything in and of themselves, its having the experience and judgment to know which pattern applies in a given situation that makes them truly useful, and the fact the traders themselves believe in them, so to some extent they become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So the field of technical analysis is itself a combination of art and science.

And actually, the most important aspect of trading is loss control and sell discipline, and understanding position sizing relative to risk and reward, since understanding the technical indicators is actually fairly straightforward, and many charting packages will do that for you anyway, so you don't even know how to understand how they're derived. And the charting packages will generate buys and sells by whatever indicator you want, but remember, it's knowing when to apply a given indicator that's the hard part. Finally, if you're planning on starting in on trading yourself, make sure you read up on and understand what's known as "money management" thoroughly before you set out--such as proper position sizing (not risking too much money on a given trade) and not selling your losers promply--an almost universal mistake among novice traders--and even pros who should (and do) know better. Good luck and happy trading!

2 out of 5 stars Yet another trading book.......2003-08-21

Absolutely nothing special at all. Target audience is on par of those reading Elder's Trading for a Living. Teaches a little bit of everything, but nothing very well. An advanced trader should literally be able to flip through the book, look at the charts and infer all that is necessary from this book. The few strong points that I saw were linked to intermarket relationships which Murphy has already written an entire book about.
