Book Description

To encounter John Agnew's work is to gaze at the mysterious and enchanting world of a forest floor, mountainous cliffs and crags, the heights of a rain forest or the surface of a hidden pond.

In this book, Agnew shares his secrets about how to create those special atmospheres by controlling the light, color, textures, point of view and design of his paintings. The book is filled with mini-demonstrations showing readers exactly how to capture this beauty in their own work, regardless of the medium they work in. They'll find guidelines for rendering leaves, mud, snow, fur, feathers and more, plus one full demonstration that puts these animal and environment textures together in a single painting.

* Very accessible instruction in step-by-step form
* Teaches a unique subject matter and taps into the public's interest in the environment

5 out of 5 stars A must have........2007-01-02

I've found this book to be extremely useful as an artist. There are several easy to understand demonstrations on how to achieve various techniques, such as creating haze, fog, and humidity both for close up scenes and those at a distance. Other demo's include creating light and shadow, animal skins, furs & feathers, foliage, water, snow & ice, and sand & mud, to name a few. Each demo is accompanied by a complete materials list of easy to find items. Some of his techniques call for the use of an airbrush, but there is no need to run out and buy the best model available as a simple craft airbrush/air could work. The airbrush techniques described can be achieved with a little practice. Even if one didn't wish to use an airbrush and preferred to use glazes, I would still highly recommend this book because the exercises do not focus on the use of an airbrush, but rather a layering of paints.
In the final chapter John Agnew showcases a few of his works, including some breathtaking murals he completed for various zoo exhibits and museums.

5 out of 5 stars the most in deep painting tutorial.......2006-08-05

Recently I bought a load of painting tutorial book and this one has got to be the most detailed and well explained of them all. I was really surprised because I was not expecting them to go in such detail. I got the book "painting wildlife texture step by step" and "painting the secret world of nature" was even better in explaining how to paint nature texture. For exemple, the snake scales are better explained in the secret world of nature..and there are also step by step on how to paint realistic wood texture which was not in any of the other books that I have.

This is a really fantastic book.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book!.......2006-07-14

Truely generous of the author to share his great techniques. The book is a gold mine of color and applications. The steps are
very helpful. The technique results are fabulous!

4 out of 5 stars You won't learn to airbrush from this book, but--nice pix!.......2002-03-21

Gorgeous nature artwork. The frog is exceptional. Agnew's rendering of translucent animal skin, dewdrops and leaves is miraculous, but you won't learn how exactly to airbrush those types of things. How the works get from roughed-in ideas to detailed airbrushed plant foliage is NOT well-documented here. If you want to learn how to do detailed airbrushing, this is not the book for you. But if you want to be inspired by some great technique and learn some of it (for example, how to do translucent effects) this book is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Tangible art.......2001-12-02

There are many good books on nature; there are many good books on art; there are many good instruction manuals. John Agnew's "Painting the secret world of nature" is a rare book that excels in all three of these.

Beginners as well as experienced artists will find this book both technically helpful and aesthetically pleasing. Its clear-cut instructions and step-by-step illustrations, showing the process of creating and elaborating a visually striking image, will help a practicing artist to improve the technique of realistic painting.

All professional artists have their own trade secrets; few are willing to share them; even fewer are able to do it in a way that makes sense to others. John Agnew's book is the one that does it superbly.

          Book Description

Until now, the poetry of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has been hidden, "embedded" within comments made at press briefings and in interviews. His preferred medium is the spoken word, and his audience has been limited to hard-bitten reporters and hard-core watchers of C-SPAN.

Just as The Iliad and The Odyssey were spoken aloud by many bards, in many variations, before Homer captured them on paper, the Rumsfeld improvisations have finally met up with their perfect editor/enabler. Hart Seely, coeditor of O Holy Cow! The Selected Verse of Phil Rizzuto, uncovers the gems hidden within hundreds of hours of Rumsfeld commentary, in the form of Zen verse, haiku, sonnets, lyric poetry, and free verse. In addition, Seely's sharp sleuthing has uncovered two thematic collections: Rumsfeld's Songs of Myself, and Nine Poems on the Media.

The result is a hilarious and irreverently revealing book both by and about one of the world's most powerful men.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A modern classic.......2007-01-15

Who knew that Donald Rumsfeld could unintentionally write a book of poetry that can only be compared with the works of Calvin Trillin?

1 out of 5 stars Poetry? If so then everything (and nothing) is poetry........2005-06-12

I felt so nauseated by the title of this book that I had to write just a few comments. Perhaps using vocabulary like 'existential' in relation to Rumsfeld's utterances will make them sound more profound to some people. Rumsfeld is a lot of things but a poet is something he is not. A poet is someone who can create art; and through that beauty which is called art he/she can communicate truth. Poetry is something that is alive. Poetry is a music of words - you can feel it, you can hear its sound, you can see its colours, you can touch it and it can touch you.
In all ages there have been people blessed with the gift of poetry and others blessed with the gift of appreciation. Even though Rumsfeld falls into neither category, I would much rather see him undeservedly hailed as the supreme laureate (regurgitating trite doggerel and rewording quotations from speakers' sourcebooks) than see him in his present role. As a poetaster he would only distort a form of art. Yet as Secretary of State he constitutes a danger to the whole world. How many thousands of innocent people have been killed because of this man? How many young heroic soldiers are still being sent to their deaths each day for a salary that is just a mocking trifle (perhaps not even 1% of Rumsfeld's disgustingly high income).
How many young widows and girlfriends have had all their dreams destroyed? Everything meaningful in their lives has now been taken. The fresh smell of each springtime blossom and colours of the changing seasons will lack something special for these brave ladies. Now for them the beauty of nature and of music cannot be lived fully; such things can only give comfort and enhance that feeling of emptiness. How many more children will have to suffer without their daddy? Now they feel so alone. When they are afraid they will not feel the warmth of a strong arm to hold them and reassure them. When they fall there will be no firm hand to lift them again and make them feel secure; nor will they hear a loving voice giving them the encouragement to walk on. There will be noone to give a father's advice as they grow - and there will be no one to share the child's happiness when he/she succeeds. There will always be something special missing from every aspect of their lives. Their little worlds have been destroyed thanks to Rumsfeld.
This man has caused so much misery and suffering. Together with his conniving colleagues he advised his president to wage an immoral and unjust war against a country that was not to blame for an evil terrorist attack committed by others. It is true that Saddam Hussein was not a democratic leader and most of the Iraqi people wanted to get rid of him for years. However, their aspirations were thwarted since for many years he was protected as the good boy of America (remember the Iran-Iraq war?). Now there is an actual danger of terrorism in/ from Iraq which hitherto had not existed.
This book page in Amazon is no doubt visited by propective customers who are admirers of the Secretary. I therefore expect to see a few negative 'votes' for this review. As for the claim to poetry, I do not recall that Rumsfeld answered very articulately when (after enjoying the utmost security to visit Iraq) he was asked why the American soldiers were not provided with better and safer vehicles. At the moment they are still exposed in half-open vehicles when they go on patrols and are therefore easy targets. Rumsfeld covers up the odd case of scandal and torture (which I do not believe is representative of most young heroes in the army). However, he has not gone to the same length to protect the majority of HEROES who are exposed to danger every day, being deceived that they are doing so for their country. Why doesn't Rumsfeld consider the lives and families of these young men (and young ladies too)? Why doesn't he send them home NOW!!!!!!!
I have just a few final questions for anyone who really admires this man. Do you think that HE would risk his own life as readily and easily as he risks so many young lives daily? Since you admire him so much, would YOU be prepared to go to Iraq YOURSELF and be killed for this man just like all the young heroes who are dying every day? And have you thought that while you are reading his book and having a pleasant smirk in the safety and comfort of your own home other people are being killed? These questions were just rhetorical.

5 out of 5 stars Pull on your incontinence trousers..........2005-05-20

          You may well need them.

This is utterly hilarious. Seely's recognition of the Zen-like Beyond BushSpeak non-logic of Rumy (not to be confused with the actual poet Rumi!) is masterfully explored in this stunning volume.

Any American politician who states openly on TV that it didn't really matter if the UK did not come on board for the invasion of Iraq - as the Brits were preparing to commit their land, sea and air forces to a joint invasion force - has to be examined closely - for any neural activity, for example.

Hate him or hate him, Rumy has his Own Way of confusing the unwitting with his non-linear Joycean paradigms. Bush Snr. set the standard with his neologism-ridden BushSpeak, but clearly Rumy has turned out to be the Master of the Absurd.

The scary part about this 'existential poetry' is that much of it was lifted as is, and there are many literal quotes, however mind-tricking the meandering, Lewis Carroll on downers logic appears to become.

          C. Colt's review is a work of art in itself and the best analysis of this Major Force in modern poetry I have yet read. But then, I have yet to read Rumy's psychiatric evaluations.

          Man, know thyself - Aristotle
          Uh? - Donald Rumsfeld.

5 out of 5 stars Demeaning? If you insist!.......2004-05-13

          Rumsfeld is brilliant.
Those who read too much into his digs, thinking him silly, are foolish.
Rummy is a master of the English Language and I LOVE it when he mentally bashes the liberal press with his genius, especially when they are unaware of the mental thrashing received.

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny Stuff ... Unless you're in Iraq I suppose.......2004-04-13

I can't bring myself to agree that this book isn't partisan; perhaps the book wasn't compiled with that intention, but reading it certainly, forces some serious political thinking. What do you say about a man who looks the American press (whatever their shortcomings) in the eye and says:

I was briefed on that story before I came down.
I have not gone over it.
          It's interesting.
Let me try to put it in context,
And then I'll see if I can answer it.
I have no idea what what it's about.

(...)Where are these gems of verbal prevarication being hidden? In the pages of this book, which will make you laugh until you cry with despair and fear. After all, even tricky Dicky didn't try to convince us he had no idea about something he admits he just read.

Hollywood Renegades introduces us to a group of independent filmmakers whose collective efforts and use of their movies as weapons against the major studies effectively ended the old Hollywood studio contract system. Historian J.A. Aberdeen reveals fascinating information (much of it previously unreported) about the rise and fall of the Society Of Independent Motion Picture Producers (SIMPP) and how an independent filmmaker movement of more than 50 years ago laid the foundation of the modern Hollywood we have today -- and a struggle by independents to make and distribute their films that continues into the present day. Highly recommended reading for all movie buffs and cinema history students, Hollywood Renegades reveals the astonishing stories of Charles Chaplin, Walt Disney, Samuel Goldwyn, Alexander Korda, Mary Pickford, David O. Selznick, Walter Wanger, Orson Wells and others whose impact on American filmmaking was as profound and far reaching as they were talented and ambitious.

Although portrait painters often pose their subjects in formal settings, Thomas Gainsborough sometimes depicted them relaxing at home, surrounded by favorite possessions. These informal portraits are called "conversation pieces." If a painter were to create a conversation piece for you, how would you pose? What favorite objects would you include in the picture?

                    Product Description

"Fashion for Profit"was first conceived for the many talented students that I have had the pleasure of teaching, who want to achieve their dreams of one-day owning their own company, and of producing a successful line of clothing. The apparent lack of business information for apparel start-up apparel manufacturers motivated me to provide this critical education and business training. I developed a class for the continuing education department at Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles. This "hands-on", "how to" class, provided the one-on-one which assisted entrepreneurs develop a small, workable clothing line, and get the business training needed to become successful in a business well known for its failures.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book don't be fooled by others.......2006-11-08

I went to fashion school, worked for large high end lines, did the whole deal. I was lucky that in one of my classes they made us read this book. This book is basically the bible to the apparel industry. I would say only 10% of this industry is design the other 90% is business which is covered completely in this book. I've looked into other similar books and they are great for the design aspects, but nothing covers the business end like this book, don't waste you time with other titles this is the one to read if you really want to know how to start your own line.

5 out of 5 stars Fashion for Profit is the Fashion Bible!.......2006-06-27

I advise anyone who is trying to come out with a line to read this book and purchase the DVD! This book is a great reference guide - something good to always keep on stand by. Very useful if you want to do things right!

                            5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book...................2002-09-23

Thank you for helping me to advance professionally in my career as an
Administrative Assistant. I have been searching for a way to gain respect
from my Directors. I have tried many things to gain respect I became more
organized, learned to improve my communication style and to act more
professional. However, something was still missing. It was the way I
dressed and I did not realize it until I had the opportunity to speak with
                            Dawn and read her book.

Prior to reading the book, I would look through clothing catalogs and find
really cute clothes. They may have been cute to me but they were not
professional. I was so thrilled and excited about the tips you gave me to
"professionalize" my wardrobe because of the upbeat and positive way you
presented the information. Immediately, I began to change the way I
dressed and soon I began to reap the results I wanted. The Directors
began to listen to me, I was handed high profile projects and people took
notice of me and have complimented me on my new look. Even more important,
I feel more positive at work and can concentrate on getting my job done no
matter what the world hands me that day.

I am transitioning my career and was at a loss on how to present myself in my new career direction. This book provided me with the information I needed to be me and present myself professionally. That's what unique about this book compared to others - Dawn show's you how to be your own person. Thank You!

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, but not terrific........1999-09-08

Although I picked up some good ideas on wardrobe planning, much of the advice on improving your appearance is just common sense (wash your hair, manicure your nails). Also, her color scheme system was difficult to understand and apply. I never did figure out where I fit! There are better books out there.
