Customer Reviews:
Good text, but go for the newer version.......2007-02-28
This is the original edition (1985) of "Pollock and After" which is a really great text for anyone who wants to insight into American modernist critics. It focuses primarily on Greenberg, Greenbergian formalism, Marxism, the Cold War, and obviously, Pollock's work. If you're buying this used, just because of the age, it's more than likely going to be really marked up. Be realistic. In 2000 there was a reprint of this book that included new criticism from critics like Ana Chave and Michael Leja, that looked at different spheres of gender and certain postmodern concerns. The expanded edition has a lot more information and is worth the extra cost, trust me!

Book Description
In early America, most children had only a few toys and parents received advice from family and friends on the best ways to make and use toys. By the early 1900s the Industrial Revolution was producing a new world of toys and giving more parents the wealth to buy them. Mass media also sang the praises of these new factory-made, store-bought toys, but that began to change as early as the mid-1900s when the mass media was used to inform parents of the many dangers of children's toys. Many encourage violence, sexism, racism, and some are actually unsafe and unhealthy.
The development of children's toys from early America to the present time and the shifting opinions of them expressed by parents and the mass media throughout this time are the main subjects of this book. The first section discusses the many problems with toys, while the second puts these problems in historical perspective. How have these problems changed, and are still changing today? Might today's toys be about to enter a time when they will be better than ever? The third section argues that many media toy watchers are biased toward the negative, giving toys more of a black eye than they deserve, and considers the challenges that face today's parents as they try to choose the best toys for their children.

great book.......2006-04-17
Great book on the social history of toys. McClary does an excellent job connecting the soical and political influences that have shaped toys over the years.

Book Description
As the trail of blood and honor gets deeper and longer, corruption and double crossings abound. Two considerably evil and ambitious forces, previously teamed to finally kill the vengeful samurai Itto Ogami, clash in the torrential rains that continue to pound Edo. Determined to be the first to reach Ogami Itto and his Diagoro, the shogun's own poisoner waits in a temple where the samurai and his toddler boy left their cart, reflecting on the path that has led him to this point, and brewing his most deadly poison. And the fiery Retsudo won't be stopped in his quest to kill Ogami, however now he must be wary of the poisoner's crafty ways. Meanwhile, the Lone Wolf and Cub enlist the aid of a tailor to help them prepare for what could be their last stand! There's something in the air, and it smells like death!
Customer Reviews:
Abe-no-Kaii continues to try and poison Lone Wolf & Cub.......2002-12-31
My decision this fall to start reading the manga epic Lone Wolf & Cub, one episode a night before going to bed, appears to be a masterstroke of timing since the 28th and final volume of the series was due out this week. Volume 21, "Fragrance of Death" continues the novel-within-the-novel that began with the previous volume, "A Taste of Poison." The Shogun, tired of the pathetic attempts of Retsudo Yagyu and his retainers to kill Ogami Itto allows the head of the Yagyu clan to use the services of Abe-no-Kaii, the head of the Kuchiyaku, the "official mouths" of the Shougn who taste his food for poisons. Abe-no-Kaii is a master of poisons, but by this point in the story he has failed several times to kill his prime target, Daigoro, or the boy's father. But the attempts continue in his own quest to control the power of the Shogunate in the five stories collected in this volume:
(103) "Poison Currents" is the story that will convince you once and for all that Ogami Itto really is a demon; or, at least, is beyond being a mere human. Abe-no-Kaii actually poisons himself to help set the trap that finally succeeds in rending Ogami Itto helpless. Or does it?
(104) "Flood of Fire" finds the desperate master poisoner making an attempt on the life of Retsudo Yagyu and risking everything he had done on this desperate ploy.
(105) "Fire, Water and Poison" tells of Abe-no-Kaii fleeing the wrath of the Yagyu clan, but still trying to come up with a plan to save his life by being the one to kill Ogami Itto.
(106) "Fragrance of Death" finally answers the question as to what Ogami Itto did with all the gold he has been receiving for the many assassinations he has accomplished along the Assassin's Road. But at the same time, father and son require the cutting of some habutae, the unbleached white silk funeral clothes of Japanese tradition. Along with the recovery of his gold, this can only portend that we are coming to another significant moment in this epic quest for vengeance and restored honor.
(107) "Kaii's Lullaby" tells of Abe-no-Kaii's final gambit to poision Lone Wolf and Cub, as well as the story of how he came to be the master taster for the Shogun. It is not surprising that Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima are able to invest even a wretched monster like Abe-no-Kaii with some small aspect of sympathy. Of course, this all just ups the ante for the payoff in what may well prove to be the last major skirmish before the final battle is joined.
The ebb and flow of this story has been most impressive, especially since it is not until these recent volumes that Koike and Kojima have ketp such a tight narrative focus for so long. But clearly things have changed significantly now that Ogami Itto and Daigoro have entered Edo. The only problem is, I do not think I want this story to end.

A perfect lazy day weekend book.......2001-06-21
It all started when I was persuing books in the airport bookstore when I came across the title, "Death Wore a Fabulous New Fragrance." I pulled it out and did a quick thumb-through when I heard my flight's boarding call. Having found nothing else that even came close to piquing my interest, I paid for the book and ran to catch my flight. For the next two hours, I was grinning, laughing, and having a grand time with two of the most imaginative characters in the most glamourous of situations to the point that *I* was jealous of them. Yeah, yeah, they're fictional characters but the panache they pull off when ordering Bombay Sapphire Gin Martinis....buy this book, make a pitcher of Bombay Sapphire Gin Martinis (or Long Island Iced Teas) and lose yourself in this book. I *dare* you to read between the lines on some of these characters! I know I did and it made it all that much more enjoyable!
This is a great sunny afternoon iced tea drinking book........1999-03-28
I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. First, I had read Mr. Outland's first mystery book and enjoyed it thouroughly. Second, it was fun trying to figure out who the famous people in the book he was talking about were (some I could, some I am STILL trying to figure out). Lastly, I really enjoy Mr. Outland's style of writing. It is very easy to read, and the dialogue is fun, and timely. Thanks, and I can't wait for the next in the series! Jenny
Outland has a style all his own we should be glad of it.......1998-04-25
Socially vacant people would take one look baby Binky van de Kamp and homosexual Doan McChandler and stereotype the pair as a drag queen and a fag. Anyone who gets to know them, quickly realizes that they are just two people who prefer to live the high life to the fullest, but do not have the cash to do so in an orthodox manner. The unusual ideas this pair uses to maintain their current lifestyle is ludicrous. Still they would go the extra mile for a friend in need (hopefully finding cash on the way).
Just a month ago, Doan and Binky risked their lives to successfully rescue a friend from a murder charge. This achievement leads them to open up their own detective agency. Their first client is an acquaintance of Doan, accused of murdering a closeted movie hunk. The duo goes to LA where they quickly find themselves surrounded by human piranhas willing to do anything for a buck.
Orland Outland has created a unique and refreshing new kind of mystery series that is pure fun. The mystery propels the story line forward, but it is the campy characters and their serio-comic scenes that give DEATH WORE A FABULOUS NEW FRAGRANCE its quirky charm (and odor). Though Binky and Doan are not a romantic couple, their constant zings and witty ripostes are priceless. This is the beginning of a warm friendship with a new series clearly on the cutting edge (and sometimes to the outside of that).

Book Description
THE MUSIC ROAD: A JOURNEY IN MUSIC READING presents an exciting, effective way for beginning music readers to experience the joy of reading and playing music at the keyboard. In the three volumes of THE MUSIC ROAD, a comfortable sequence of steps is presented. Each unit is divided into three parts: 'Stop! Look! Learn!,' in which new material for learning is presented with follow-up written assignments, 'Stop! Look! Play!,' in which new material is used in simple playing experiences, short mini-melodies, and one measure musical examples, and 'Destination,' which uses folk songs and original music to offer many, many opportunities to 'see and play' what has been presented in the learning part of the unit. Each unit has a corresponding 'Stop! Listen!' appendix in which the ear is trained to 'hear' what has been 'seen' on the printed page. Listening to 'high-low,' keyboard location, quarter, half, whole notes, 3/4 - 4/4 time, and intervals are a few of the beginning focuses in Book 1. Rel
Book Description
Some chess-players always seem to have a trick up their sleeve. They spot unlikely-looking tactical tricks, launch cunning attacks from seemingly quiet positions and are unrelenting when the enemy king is in their sights. Even when things go wrong, they create practical chances and repeatedly finesse their way out of trouble. LeMoir shows that the key factors in becoming a deadly tactician are motivation, imagination, and calculation. Motivation is having the willingness to sacrifice and consider tactical ideas during play. Imagination is being aware of tactical concepts that lead to ideas which other players might miss. Calculation is being able to analyse and calculate effectively. This user-friendly and humorous book contains many outstanding examples of seized opportunities, together with guidance on how to spot surprising tactics and handle positions of material imbalance. Thoughout, there are exercises for readers to tackle.
Customer Reviews:
Useful instruction on finding and playing combinations.......2006-06-14
This book talks intelligently about the ways a player can improve combinational ability, in many different types of position.
My home library contains 350-400 books, most of which I have read, and yet few of those books have so many original examples as this one. LeMoir has done a great deal of research from sources both old and new.
Gambit is a dedicated chess publisher (the owners are all strong chessplayers and they only publish books on chess), and the company has published several books on tactics.
However this one contains the best advice on how to swindle an opponent!
A feast of examples will inspire your game.......2005-08-27
This book is, quite simply, one of the best-value I have ever seen: a tactics book you will delight in reading for the next six months. LeMoir has selected hundreds of positions, from all eras in chess history, showing amazing combinations, sacrifices and tactical themes. Anyone who reads this material will be better placed to bewilder and defeat their opponents. As well as the impressive depth and breadth of the examples used, there is plenty of explanation in the form of words. With two or three diagrams on nearly every page, and the crisp production quality invariably associated with publisher Gambit, what one is there to ask? The book finishes with 35 pages of tests and solutions. This is a stimulating and meaty read - don't miss it.
A desert-island tactics book - hundreds of positions .......2005-08-21
In one of my other reviews I got my LeMoir books mixed up. I meant to refer to ESSENTIAL CHESS SACRIFICES, his awesome collection of modern sacrificial themes which I would urge any attacking player to read. But his earlier work HOW TO BECOME A DEADLY CHESS TACTICIAN is also a book I enjoyed and benefited from. So many positions from the master games were not familiar to me (and I own a lot of books), and his practical advice on finding combinations (or cunning swindles) is superb.
This is so much material crammed into these LeMoir books - months of reading material rather than weeks or days. A LeMoir trait is to give several similar examples of the same sacrificial or tactical concept, but in slightly varied settings, which is so helpful. Don't let some other ignorant reviewers put you off - this is a book of real quality, which will give you a competitive edge in games. The five stars are fully deserved.
Way Too Difficult.......2005-05-06
I didn't like this book, but that's because I didn't understand it. This book is written on a VERY high level (1800+ USCF). It's been sitting on my shelf for six months and i still can't understand a word. Don't buy this book unless you're an expert at the game.
An inspiring and stimulating work.......2005-02-21
I loved this book. For several months I have been studying it, and have found it to be an inspiring and stimulating guide that has improved my tactics. I have seen several reviews in chess magazines that have all indicated it will help you become become a more dangerous opponent, and that is certainly my experience.
HOW TO BECOME A DEADLY CHESS TACTICIAN is crammed full of well-chosen tactical positions. The commentary is engaging (this is LeMoir's second book for Gambit, after HOW TO BE LUCKY IN CHESS), and the material is well-classified. Presentation is excellent, and most pages have two or three diagrams.
The publisher has a good record of discovering authors who really understand how to communicate with the ordinary club player. $19.95 for all the above represents good value for money - highly recommended.
Book Description
"Graham's ideas inspired the investment community for nearly a century."--Smart Money
"Graham's method of investing is as relevant today as it was when he first espoused it during the Roaring Twenties."--Investor's Business Daily
Benjamin Graham's revolutionary theories have influenced and inspired investors for nearly 70 years. First published in 1934, his Security Analysis is still considered to be the value investing bible for investors of every ilk. Yet, it is the second edition of that book, published in 1940 and long since out of print, that many experts--including Graham protégé Warren Buffet--consider to be the definitive edition. This facsimile reproduction of that seminal work makes available to investors, once again, the original thinking of "this century's (and perhaps history's) most important thinker on applied portfolio investment."
Customer Reviews:
Master piece o f finding undervalue stocks.......2007-05-14
This book inspired generations of investment masters. Warren Buffett, John Templeton, Jim Rogers, just to name a few. In the book, Graham teaches how to find stocks with good discounts.
If you never read another book or magazine on investing, or could only read one - READ THIS BOOK - For It Is PRICLESS!!!!.......2007-03-09
I know not who will read this, but perhaps I can act as a MENTOR to you, and we will never meet. In all of life there are short cuts that can shave years of trial, error, and pain, that others who do not learn the shortcuts must pay the price. Each generation has to learn what the previous generation has learned. Sometime they don't, and the results are clearly evident in the histories that we read, and take for granted.
No one argues that the greatest investor of the 20th century is Warren Buffett. He has an Einstein type brain lodged inside his skull. You couple this enormous intellect with a laser-like focus and discipline, and you still don't have the world's greatest investor. What Buffet needed was the skill sets, a template that he could fall back on to face every conceivable business analysis, in any type of economic environment.
Remember it was Buffett in the height of the bull market in the late 1960's that cashed in the investment partnership he ran, and sent back the money to every investor along with a letter. During the height of the bull craze absolutely equivalent to the Internet craze we all went through a few years ago, Buffett had this to say. When the game that is played is no longer the game I understand, it's time to leave the game. He did, and saved a fortune in the bear market that ensued - the worst bear market since the Great Depression.
How did Warren Buffett do it? It was simple. There's an expression that Isaac Newton arguably the greatest intellect of the last five hundred years use to tell people. It's called OTSOG; it means On The Shoulders of Giants. Newton was implying that if he had seen more than others, if he knew more than others; it is by standing ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. He meant Euclid, and the earlier Greeks, and all the knowledge they had accumulated.
Warren Buffett would tell you himself that he has stood on the shoulders of giants. His giant was Benjamin Graham. Even Buffet's towering intellect, laser like focus, and hardwired brain for compounding, would not have been enough to insure financial success without Benjamin Graham as his mentor. Today, you and I have the same opportunity as Buffett.
Although we can never sit in the same classroom as Buffett did at Columbia University so many decades ago, while the master Benjamin Graham lectured at the front of the room, you and I can read his masterpiece, which Buffett has called the BIBLE OF INVESTING.
Buffett is one of the two, or three richest men in the world. He still fly's on a privately owned $50 million Gulf stream jet, and reads the 1940 edition of Graham and Dodd's Security Analysis. The same book you have the opportunity to buy, and own for your very own today. I have heard him say, that he has read it from cover to cover more than a dozen times. He has read the other editions as well. This edition is the treasure, because it is still in the voice of Benjamin Graham himself, and it is the second edition, after Graham worked out the kinks that were in the first edition published in 1934 during the Great Depression.
Who will Benefit from this book?
If you are involved with the market, perhaps a student interested in the market, or run billions of dollars, which I have done in my lifetime, anybody will benefit from this book. Is it easy to read - of course not? Will you understand everything you read - Not a chance? It really doesn't matter. You will take out of it what you need to take out of it, and each time you open it, you will take out more.
It may take months and years for Graham to teach you the lessons you need to learn, but he will teach you, just as he taught Buffett. Remember Buffett wasn't his only successful student. There were many other MASTERS that were created in that classroom at Columbia so many decades ago. An example are the folks that ran and run Sequoia Capital, a value hunting firm that's been around for decades, outperforming all their competitors.
There is really no other book that can give you the FORMAL GROUNDING that you need to become a true player in the stock market. Even now, forty years after I started reading Graham and Dodd, I am still learning something on every page I read over and over again.
Many other reviewers have taken the time to explain what it on those pages; I will not rehash them here. I need to motivate you to ACT, to click the button that says, I want to own this book, so please allow me to share one or two stories with you.
When I was a teenager going to college in New York, my accounting professor got me an afternoon job with John W. Bristol, the foremost money manager of the 1950's and 60's. He ran the Princeton University portfolio among many others of equal prestige. Always sitting behind him was a well-worn copy of Graham and Dodd.
Two years later with Arthur Andersen, I had the honor of auditing the richest man in the world - Daniel K. Ludwig. He was worth $5 billion in the early 1970's. No education, 5th grade maybe, and forget college. Behind him was Graham and Dodd, the only book there, and it was underlined and annotated. This man was secretive and shy; he had only two friends in life - Howard Hughes, and Clark Gable.
I implore you, READ THIS BOOK and CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

The Classic on Investing.......2007-01-04
Warren Buffett's favorite author. That says it all. Very value investing oriented. Good for everyone to read since it grounds investments in reality.
The Foundation.......2004-05-17
Benjamin Graham and David Dodd penned the foundation of wise modern investment theory. As such, "Security Analysis" is included in most must read lists of investment books. It is often referred to, alluded to, or directly quoted. You could invest without it, but for every win, you might also suffer a loss.
You may not agree with all of Graham and Dodd's precepts, but most modern and value investment analysis and philosophy can be rooted to the concepts espoused in their tome. "Security Analysis" is to investments what Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" is to economics, Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" is to leadership, and William Shakespeare's plays are to Western theatre.
good, but not graham's best work.......2004-05-02
yes, this book is worth owning; its focus on fixed and preferred securities is detailed and thorough, but may be a bit too much for equity investors. however, the book does appear dated as it is given its focus on railroad and utility securities. its practical wisdom is obscured by detail on topics no longer relevant in today's day & age---"intelligent investor" is much more timeless in this regard, and is the preferred graham book if you're only getting one.
but no serious investor should be w/o this in his/ her library.
