As a more recent collector of Quimper I needed to purchase a good guide on the earlier and more expensive wares. I found the history of the origins, styles and values most interesting and useful. The book was well illustrated covering the various styles and the all important section on the Factory Marks complemented the volume at the end.

The History of the people andpottery of Provenc includes much pottery of the region, but particularly the development of Quimper. The pictures are lovely and the values listed are valid.

Grimjack keeps getting drawn deeper and deeper into the political machinations of the city, and he thought he was mostly out of it. He does a job for one of the wealthy women, as well as a rock star.

He realises Mac Cabre, one of the Dancer's lieutenants is operating a sporting event, and discovers the Dancer himself is still kicking.

With the help of an outback biker cop who is pretty much as much of a hardarse as he is, in his own way, he helps put a stop to some police corruption.

All this has him butting heads with the shadowy head of Cynosure's security, Mayfair, a man he used to work for.

JACK IS BACK in The legend of GRIMJACK volume #2

The original HARD-BOILED barbarian is back. In the ever-shifting city of Cynosure, the nexus of all realities, this merc/detective series contains the private-eye anti-hero of pulp fiction mixed with the fantasy of Robert E. Howard. GRIMJACK aka John Gaunt, published in 1983-84, is re-presented here, without the backpage MUNDEN's BAR shorts, unfortunately.

THIS TRADE PAPERBACK COLLECTS THE REPRINTS OF THE MONTHLY GRIMJACK COMICS FROM OSTRANDER AND TRUMAN, now that the story arcs from the backpages of STARSLAYER have been reprinted in THE LEGEND of GRIMJACK (volume one), volume 2 begins with issue #1, "a SHADE of TRUTH" to issue #7 "SHADOWS of DOUBT"

In what was the premiere issue of the monthly series, "a Shade of Truth" finds Gaunt hanging out in his bar, Munden's, when a fancy-looking woman walks in. She used to be married to William Honesworth, Cynosure's finance minister. Their daughter Marcie recently killed herself, and she wants Gaunt to find the daughter's diary so she can learn why.
In "BLOOD SPORT," a kid wants to hire Gaunt for one DECICRED, the smallest coin in Cynosure. Gaunt takes the job because, he says, "NOBODY'D EVER OFFERED THEIR ENTIRE BANKROLL BEFORE." The kid's father is going to fight in the "Blood Sport", an illegal bare-knuckle deathmatch, to make some money. The kid wants Gaunt to stop him so he doesn't get killed. Gaunt takes the father's place in a match against a huge mutant called Butcherboy. This story reveals Gaunt's roots in the Pit, Cynosure's ghetto, and how got the nickname GRIMJACK. reminds Gaunt of his days as a slave in the Arena. There's some background info on the Dancer, who Gaunt knew in the Arena, and Dancer's lieutenant Mac Cabre appears as ringmaster.
In "BLOOD RELATIONS," Gaunt visits with BlacJacMac, Gaunt's best bud from the Arena, to tell him his father Mac Cabre is still alive. The two of them go check out Cabre's old headquarters, and find it has been re-occupied and now holds, among other things, a dozen womb tanks each holding a clone of the Butcherboy.
Then in "LEGACY" Grimjack goes Kevin Costner as he protects a comeback rock star from a psycho fan. This is the only weak story in the mix.
In "DEAD END" Gaunt's old TDP, Tran-Dimensional Police, partner Roscoe wants his help in investigating the theft of some Portable Reality Generators, one of the TDP's secret edges in fighting trans-dimensional crime. The trail leads out Eternity Road to TDP biker cop Jericho Noleski, who rescues Gaunt from a shootout at Dead End Station. "SHADOW COPS" and "SHADOWS of DOUBT" concludes the Cynosure cop conspiracy story arc.

The Trade paperback includes a gallery of the original cover art and a new cover by Tim Truman. The original art here isn't as strong as Truman's new work in GRIMJACK: KILLER INSTINCT. But the stories here define John Gaunt by introducing the key players, by sharing his childhood in the pit, outlining his time with Cynosure's police dept and his haunted history.

1 out of 5 stars Well, Duh - about says it all.......2005-07-10

The first chapter of this book was enjoyable, then after that the author tended to stray from his purported purpose, which was to show cases of "the stupid things people do in every field of human activity". However, in subsequent chapters, some of the things listed as "stupidity" are cases where people in historic times did not have the benefit of modern scientific knowledge, so while calling it "ignorance" might be acceptable, calling it "stupidity" is a little inappropriate. In other cases, the author lists examples of personal idiosyncrasies, and does display, as another reviewer of this book has already pointed out, a certain amount of shallowness, and an anti-intellectual tendency. For example, he points out that the movie "Dumb and Dumber" sold more tickets than "Sense and Sensibility", totally ignoring the fact that the first is a physical comedy, while the second is a period drama/romance, and comedies typically do better at the box office than dramas. All in all, I wish I had read the previous review before buying this book.

1 out of 5 stars Based on the calendar.......2005-04-04

I guess I lucked out. Everything I know about this book is based on the excerpts used to populate a desk calendar and that calendar was given to me as a gift. I didn't have to pay for the calendar and it warned me off the book.

Today's calendar page is a perfect example of the pot-calling-the-kettle-dumb that this writer exhibits again and again. This is under the recurring heading of "Everything You Always Wanted to Know but Were Too Smart to Ask":

Have you ever met a dumb rocket scientist?

People always say, "You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out." Actually, there's only *one* job where you *do* have to be smart as a rocket scientist --- being a rocket scientist.

One more thought it doesn't take a rocket scientist to think: Whom do rocket scientists refer to when they want to imply that they're not as smart as someone else? You don't have to be a supervisor of rocket scientists to figure that out.
    o
    o
    o

Oh yeah, supervisors, especially supervisors of highly technical work are so much smarter than those they supervise. Yeah, and this book isn't a shallow contribution to the anti-intellectualism running roughshod across this country.

Another entry sneers at tax money spent that enabled the creation of a dictionary of rare indigenous language spoken only amongst members of an isolated tribe. The reason for the derision? Why, it's due being knocked because the tribe doesn't have a written language! As if the only use of a dictionary is for use amongst the speakers of a language. Nah, linguists and anthropologists shouldn't have an organized repository of that language.

    Sheesh

Perhaps the book introduces these little lumps of would-be profundity with a dislaimer that it's all in fun and that license needs to be allowed for humor, but the calendar, with its "WELL, DUH!" on every page doesn't. The humor is lame, the thinking is shallow and sneering is constant. And this is judging from what I would assume is the best of the material in the book.

      1 out of 5 stars Whew!!!.......2004-11-14

I'm a Beatle fan from way back. Love them, will forever! As such, I buy every book about them, I have for years! A couple of years ago, this Hieronimus non-book came out. What a DISSAPOINTMENT!!! So BORING! Over and over again... the same info. It was like the author, Hieronimus (Bosch?) was some kind of street reporter, getting reactions from people who wanted to do nothing but sing their own praises. What a BORE! I couldn't believe such a trashy book would in any way start to explain how such a classic picture came to be, and it certainly didn't!

And then to top it all, something I've never seen before in a book, advertising in the last pages!! The entire book is a study in bad taste, and that muddy cover which is hard to believe was done by Heinz Edelman.

But there is good news!!! Last spring, another book came out on the Making of the Yellow Submarine. It's called UP PERISCOPE YELLOW by Al Brodax and it's just FANTASTIC!!! For one thing it's AUTHENTIC, written by the producer who was there, and knew the Beatles for a long time, he also produced their TV cartoons. It's clear that the wonderful stories he tells in his book (Al Brodax) came out of the close relationship he had with the Beatles. There are pictures in the book of Brodax and Segal working on the script, (Brodax was one of the co-writers) with Ringo playing the piano for him and Eric, with Brodax arguing with Paul about the script, etc... He knew them well. UP PERISCOPE YELLOW-WHAT A READ.

5 out of 5 stars Finding, and Reuniting Officers and Crew of The Musical Sub.......2004-10-10

"Inside the Yellow Submarine" is a marvelous compendium of first person interviews with the Sub's chief creative officers.

Anyone interested in learning about the design and creation of the Yellow Submarine, as well as the adventure we the crew had in the Sub's construction, is well advised to buy Dr. Bob's intricate and dedicated chronicle.

As Dr. Bob has mentioned, the untold story behind this unique motion picture intrigued him, as it has many of YS's fans for decades.

During those decades I firmly believed somewhere, someday, someone with the necessary energy, determination, organizational powers, breadth of insight and boundless curiosity would investigate the entire 'back story'.

This is Dr. Bob's first volume about a voluminous subject, and what he has achieved here is a hurculean work in unearthing the answers to many 'lost' mysteries about the film's genesis.

This seminal book has served not only to open dialog and solve many mysteries about Yellow Submarine, but it has happily led to locating and reuniting many of we crew members.

Following our completing production, we all dispersed across the globe, many going on to launch our own animation studios and animation training schools.

The tremendously original creative splash Yellow Submarine made at the time (1968), sent out such graphic tsunami waves worldwide, it influenced pop art culture itself; resonating undercurrents and surface highlights from YS are discernible in today's digital animation productions.

YS was a trailblazer opening new graphic directions for mainstream animation entertainment, just as the Beatles did musically.

Dr. Bob's book is far more than an excellent collection of remarkable first-person interviews, it sheds much needed light on many facets of the creative genius and innovative spirit involved in the film's creation, by a team of artists who, in the words of the late director, George Dunning, "Were brought together from all over the world and who seemed to be at a peak in their creative powers". (Chuck Jones/PBS 1980's memorium to George Dunning).

If you're at all interested in animation, its history, trends and processes--and particularly if you've wondered about the creative people involved in it's construction and launching, this book (and hopefully subsequent volumes yet to come!) is a 'Must Have' for your reference shelf; be it innovative animation or inspiring creativity.

      Addendum:

Apparently YS has found an entirely new audience today among children. A creation of the '60's consciousness and regarded somewhat askance by the so-called 'Establishment', with secondary references and meanings ascribed to it (like 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland'); today it's being enjoyed as what it essentially is: a bright, colorful, musical fairy tale with hilariously funny villains, and a happy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Like a communal diary from the Yellow Sub.......2003-07-10

I've always been curious about this film and what the people were like who were behind the curtain. It's been well documented elsewhere that The Beatles didn't make this film, but I never read much about this crazy group of artists in the swinging London of the 1960s who did. Finally, in this book, we get to hear what these creative people thought about while they developed the revolutionary ideas that went into this film. And unlike many other authors of Beatles-related books, who tend to focus on the glamour of The Beatles' personalities instead of the work itself, Dr. Bob Hieronimus does not skimp with the quotes from my new heroes, the struggling artists who brought Yellow Sub from concept to screen. The book reads like a communal diary from all the participants. The absorbing style is largely comprised of first-hand accounts from the film's creators, organized in such a clever way, with just enough commentary between, to allow readers to reach their own conclusions of who among the film's creators were Blue Meanies and who were Pepperlanders. I, for one, wouldn't want to miss one word of them. It's about time they had a chance to tell their own story and be given a stage to do so.

3 out of 5 stars This author needed an editor...badly.......2003-04-23

"Yellow Submarine", in its day, was a remarkable achievement in animation. While not exactly a Beatles movie, more inspired by their songs than anything truly related, it spun a lovely fairy-tale and used the spirit of the group members as heroes. More than 30 years after its release, the story of how it was made remained fascinating to fans of classic animation.

So it was with some disappointment that I slogged through this book. The author has certainly done his homework. He's turned over every remaining stone and then some, found virtually all living participants, documented every step of the way to the screen for this story. And he's turned the story of one of the most imaginative movies of the 60s into the dullest book on the planet.

It's not that what he has researched isn't in itself interesting. It's just that he can't tell what's real important information and what isn't. It seems like he collected masses of information and interviews, typed it all up on 3x5 cards and simply pasted it together into a book. Minutiae are treated as revelation; no detail is too minor to be included, and repeated. Redundancies abound; he has three participants telling the same story, one after the other, with little new between them. He repeats similar items 4 chapters beyond the first mention. Order and organization? Hardly. It just goes on and on and on.

I can't fault the material that he's come up with, and in fact I applaud it. But what this author desperately needed was an editor, someone to assist him in crystallizing the material into a narrative that best told the tale of the creation of this landmark film. Instead, this "author" has simply assembled his notes into a word processor, and left it to the reader to sort it out. That's not scholarship - that's clerical.

Nonetheless, it's all that's out there and the information throughout is valuable. If you've got the patience to sit through it.

      5 out of 5 stars A surprising page turner!.......2002-06-05

With INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE, Dr. Robert Hieronimus has fashioned a captivating adventure that will appeal to far more than just Beatles completists or animation fans. I was thrilled at the inclusion of many, many pre-film design sketches, which I'm pretty sure have never been seen anywhere else before! As for the other reviewer on this site complaining about the color section, I read an interview with the author in a UK publication called "Record Collector" saying Apple did not want him to use any previously unpublished artwork, for reasons of their own. Maybe we will see an official coffee-table style "picture book" from them in the future! If so, there's still no way any other book will ever come close to containing the extraordinary detail that Hieronimus has compiled into INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE. This book does not suffer in the least from a lack of illustrations. There is one on almost every page and they are all large and well reproduced. I for one was very pleased to learn who the faces were behind this film, and thanks to the extraordinary effort of Dr. Robert Hieronimus, they are no longer anonymous!

        Book Description

Queer Episodes in Music and Modern Identity approaches modern sexuality by way of music. Through the hidden or lost stories of composers, scholars, patrons, performers, audiences, repertoires, venues, and specific works, this intriguing volume explores points of intersection between music and queerness in Europe and the United States in the years 1870 to 1950--a period when dramatic changes in musical expression and in the expression of individual sexual identity played similar roles in washing away the certainties of the past.

Pursuing the shadowy, obscured tracks of queerness, contributors unravel connections among dissident identities and concrete aspects of musical style, gestures, and personae. On one end of the spectrum are intense, private connections and tantalizing details of musical expression: romantic correspondence between Eugenie Schumann (a daughter of Clara and Robert) and the singer Marie Fillunger; John Ireland's confessional letters to a close friend of an illicit passion for young choristers; "closet formations" in the music of composers such as Maurice Ravel, Edward Elgar, and Camille Saint-SŠens.

At the other extreme are public, often flamboyant intimations of deviance and their repercussions: the craze for male impersonators in American vaudeville between 1870 and 1930; the politics of appropriation implicit in showy transcriptions by pianists such as Liberace; the increasingly homophobic reception accorded Tchaikovsky's music in the early twentieth century. The authors also explore how traces of queerness can mark communities, such as groups of German men who fashioned homosexual identities by way of the cult of Wagner or women musicians who were assigned suspect or deviant status by virtue of being jazz instrumentalists.

Throughout these discussions, music provides the accompaniment for confrontations between disparate conventions of social propriety and diverse forms of sexual identity. These provocative essays open the consideration of music and sexuality to an exciting new sense of inbetweenness, passage, and diversion.

        Introduction

The Priest's Spell Compendium (PSC) is the fifth installment in a welcome trend: TSR/WOTC cleaning out their vaults, collating their material, and placing them in sourcebooks. The Wizard's Spell Compendium, now complete, was a valuable addition to any player or Dungeon Master's repertoire of spells. On the other hand, it was just gravy, and it suffered (like other collections) from typos, poor editing, and the general impression that someone cut and pasted the information together haphazardly.

In the case of specialty Priests, the division of spells that occurred as a result of the Second Edition rules caused some serious unbalances in the game. Some specialty Priests have spheres with few spells in them, like the Astral sphere. Because many spells can be "reversed," evil Priests have access to the Healing sphere and good Priests have access to the Necromantic sphere.

Then there's "powers" which are unique abilities bestowed upon Priests by their gods. The distinction between spells and powers is murky, as powers are not subject to the sphere categorizations. It was a convenient loophole for giving Priests spells that didn't fit with their deities profile.

With this confusing situation making a specialty Priest's life difficult, and the powers and spells largely up to the Dungeon Master's discretion, a sourcebook with more Priest spells is a welcome addition.

        Content

Having a compilation of spells is useful for Druids and other specialty Priests who suffered from the sparse spheres they had to choose from. The PSC claims on page 3:
"Some description have been updated or combined with similar effects to eliminate duplication; some have been modified for better play, and a very few have been dropped entirely." It's a no-brainer: take all the out-of-print supplements, put them into a database, and hit the print button. Then, just edit the combined content. How hard could that be?

Very hard, unfortunately. The PSC, while better edited than its predecessors (and that's not saying much), is still plagued by what seems an unwillingness on the part of the editors to comb through the book line by line. Nowhere is this more obvious than on page 9:

"In the sword-and-sandal Dark Sun setting, priests are preservers or defilers, depending on whether or not their magic drains the living energy of that world." Priests are not preservers or defilers. That's a title applied to wizards in the Dark Sun setting. However, the above sentence is in the Wizard's Spell Compendium . Somebody replaced the word "Wizard" with "Priest" and pasted the introduction into the book. This did not bode well for the rest of the volume.

        Organization

Some of the problems with PSC deal with the manner in which old spells were categorized into the new spheres created for Priests in the Second Edition rules. For example, why is age plant (p. 9) in the Time sphere, but not the Plant sphere? Several other spells are included in multiple spheres. The A section was a bit of a let down: the disturbingly slim Astral sphere only has a handful of spells in it, even with all the spells from other sources.

Icons accompany each spell to indicate, at a glance, what setting the spell fits best. This system is used inconsistently. Bad medicine (p. 52), a Shaman spell, is missing the savage setting icon.

There are several spells that create or summon monsters. The monster statistics are usually reproduced in the volume -- a necessity if the spells are to be of any use. Only some of the monsters' statistics appear, however: Create crypt thing (p. 154) has the created monster's statistics, but create death tyrant (p. 155) does not. If these statistics were removed intentionally to save space, it doesn't explain the large patches of blank space on pages 51 and 175.

Anyone remember the Dragon magazine article with six other Paladin classes, each based on a unique alignment? The Paramander's spells ended up in the Wizard's Spell Compendium, but the priest spells for the other Paladin classes are strangely excluded from this volume.

And then there's the inclusion of the coalstone's statistics without the actual spell to create it (p. 126). Why bother?

        Artwork

The artwork consists of serviceable black and white pictures, mostly portraits. One evident change of WOTC's takeover of TSR is their unwillingness to recycle old artwork. This may seem like a minor quibble, but it's a sore point with a lot of TSR products. Yes, I can recognize reused artwork from the Pick A Path/Which Way Adventure books! Thankfully, the artwork always applies to a spell on the same page.

        Conclusion

With the Third Edition of Dungeons and Dragons on its way, it's possible that editing this volume wasn't the top priority. Indeed, it may be that instead of providing a quality product, TSR's goal is to recycle all out-of-print material and then release them in electronic format at a much lower price.

The Priest's Spell Compendium selling point is obvious: you can't get many of these spells anywhere else. For players of specialty priests, it's a valuable addition to their library. Unfortunately, TSR just doesn't put enough effort into editing and organizing the spells to justify its high price tag for anyone else.

        4 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2000-06-05

These books are invaluable. The spells are alphabetical rather than by effect(as with the Encyclopedia Magica) and are given effective descriptions. Two minor complaints: quest & war spells were thrown into the final volume. While I can seee the quest spells, I think the war spells should have been included in the main. The other problem is more serious and prevents 5 stars. The index catalogs spells by sphere - but only spells the authors thought should be listed; instead of using a special notation for non-standard spells, they put them in their own index! For those who like to allow all spells, regardless of setting (through creative renaming), this is something of a hindrance. Otherwise an incredible resource.

1 out of 5 stars tsr does it again.......2000-03-30

well, again TSR (wizards of the coast ) thinks only on how to make more money. so you must buy the all Compendium if you want it to worth something. instead of arraging the spell by levels, (like in the PHB) they arrange them by the a b c. now go and search the spell you want to memorize. a nasty trick by WOC (as was done in the wizard spell compendium)

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Small Business: Low-Cost/High Return Tools and Techniques that Really Work.......2007-07-16

The Ultimate Electronic Marketing for Small Business is the non-techies' guide to marketing on the internet. This book takes the reader through the basics of getting his or her own domain, finding someone to design a website, and creating dazzling website copy that will not only draw customers to their website but also encourages potential customers to spend money. Among the most emphasized topics are the benefits of viral marketing methods such email lists, newsletters, and free ebooks.

The Ultimate Electronic Marketing for Small Business takes a bit different approach from other internet marketing books. Most books of this type assume that the small business entrepreneur will be creating their business themselves from building the website through all aspects of promotions and sales. This book, however, illustrates that you can find individuals with specialized skills such as website design and ghostwriting to create professional results without spending a fortune. Moreover, in handing over these tasks, the entrepreneur can spend more time on activities that actually draw in more money. I personally like the hands on aspect of website design and writing but I respect that not everyone enjoys these tasks. Therefore, I believe that the hints in this book could be beneficial to those individuals.

Ok - This book is not full of the most advanced strategies out their.

But they are the basics you must know if you want to survive
on the internet. You know I built a multi-million dollar online
business off the principles inside this book. When I played sports
my coach always said get back to the fundamentals. This book is a
fundamentally sound book. I've known Tom for a few years now.

He's a great guy and has a huge heart. You never can go wrong
with him. My clients that have worked with him love him to death
because of the success they achieved with his guidance.

I'd go grab this book now and not waste another sec longer.

5 out of 5 stars This book simply delivers!.......2007-03-18

Anyone in business, who has a website, is thinking about having one, wonders why some websites work and some don't, or has any interest in Internet commerce should buy this book.

Most websites, quite frankly, suck. They might be beautiful and artful at best, but they are "brochure-wear" - mine originally was. It replaced the need for a paper brochure, and like a brochure, almost no one read it. Certainly random web surfers and searchers, no matter how interested they might have been, rarely found it. I gradually got my site working like an effective website should, and it's getting better fast with this book's help. I wish I had The Ultimate Guide years ago when I launched my site!

Tom breaks his strategy into three prongs, and even if you are interested in only one or two this book has enough value that you probably need it.

Prong #1: Build a great website. A great website, among other things, is ones the search engines love and send you people who will be happy to find it.

Prong #2: Build an email list of people who want to hear from you. Periodically send them things of value, for example a useful ezine/enewsletter.

Prong #3: Develop and sell information products. It doesn't matter what your main business may be, having some low cost (and up) products so people who like your "free stuff" can see how good your "non-free stuff is." If, as in my example, you are a consultant and speaker, people who buy products for maybe $20-$100 will be more likely to hire you for your normal fees. It's a BIG leap of faith for someone to hire you for consulting or to deliver a keynote speech, i.e. for thousands of dollars, as their first transaction with you!

I knew Tom Antion existed for a while. I'm wary of most Internet marketers and gurus, because most of them are full of nonsense. Tom, and his book, delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Small Business.......2006-11-18

You won't find "fluff" in Tom Antion's book. It is jam packed with great ideas and is a definate desk reference.

I would advise reading this book all the way through, then go back and re-read the book with an ink pen in-hand, so that you can make note of the information and ideas that will assist your internet marketing goals.

4 out of 5 stars Internet Marketing - almost everything YOU need to know!.......2006-05-25

I'm surprised there have been some mixed reviews here. OK, Tom Antion is not talking rocket science (to coin a phrase) but there is an abundance of good motivational information in this book.

Sure, there are a lot of links throughout the book which are affiliate links .. but we're talking business here. If anything, these give further impetus to be a bit more enterprising, and understand that people are primarily wanting useful information.

This book doesn't include all the latest marketing gizmos. But this is definitely worth reading, at least several times, by anyone who is serious about wanting to make money on the Internet. And this book proves it can be done, provided you're prepared to put in the time and effort. My impression is that Tom genuinely wants to help other people who want to help themselves.
