Long hair in the 60s, Afros in the early 70s, bobs in the 80s, fuschia in the 90s. Hair is one of the first attributes to catch our eye, not only because it reflects perceptions of attractiveness or unattractiveness, but also because it conveys important political, cultural, and social meanings, particularly in relation to group identity. Given that mainstream images of beauty do not privilege dark skin and tightly coiled hair, African American women's experience provides a starkly different perspective on the meaning of hair in social identity.

Drawing on interviews with over 50 women, from teens to seniors, Hair Matters is the first book on the politics of Black hair to be based on substantive, ethnographically informed research. Focusing on the everyday discussions that Black women have among themselves and about themselves, Ingrid Banks analyzes how talking about hair reveals Black women's ideas about race, gender, sexuality, beauty, and power. Ultimately, what emerges is a survey of Black women's consciousness within both their own communities and mainstream culture at large.

This book is like having group therapy or interviewing other women,but it is not all black women's views.I am reviewng it because I think it is worth a read.

As you may or may not know African coily hair is quite unique in vision, texture, behaviour and probably in chemical make up too. Coily haired women around the world, go to the most extremes in terms of spending.
(Spending time, spending pain and the spending price to have African coily hair styled)
A hairstyle that we believe looks good or will help us to become socially and economically advanced.
Or maybe for our own self-esteem and maybe to attract the charms of a love interest.
Either way, psychologically and philosophically I believe that your hair is a reflection of the state of your consciousness, your internal beliefs and your relationship with the world.
What about exploring physics through african hair?
For example how much pressure, gravity and tension and tearing do we put our hair through by combing it?

let alone excessive harsh combing.
Mathematically speaking how many of you readers can tell me how many curls/coils per inch your hair has, and does it vary in coil and moisture?
Next question:When does the nature of the hair change and why?
(i know it does!)
It seems to me all these books on afro hair are good and I welcome it, but we still need to be more informed and they all seem to need better editing, just like Black American beauty magazines.I must campaign for better grammar and less air brushed photos!!!
It is as if we like to see ourselves falsely rather than the reality of what we are...
Black women need to demand more scientific reasoning from our books and be less competitive over black men which only fuels their egos and as a result probably creates more baby-mothers!!!

I give this book four stars for the effort and time invested as a writer I know it takes time...
I maintain that it is still worth reading,more than any carcinogenic chemical so called hair treatment that you pay for.

Anyway what do I know I am a black african british woman!!!!
Most of you Americans think we in Britain have no trains or any kind of progressive development!!!

Lacks Sociological Insight.......2000-07-06

This book is worth reading for those who want to learn more about the importance of hair style, color, and texture among African American women. While I doubt that many Blacks are unaware of the "hair thing", some might benefit from this book because it gives voice to what many see as a central frustration and challenge. Non-blacks with little intimate contact with Black women (and thus are unaware of the issues treated here) might find the book informative.

The main weakness of the book is that it lacks a powerful sociological analysis of the issue. The book is basically descriptive, and Banks lets the women she interviewed do much of the talking. The problem is, few of these informants could offer much insight into why hair is so central within the Black community. Further, Banks seems only superficially aware of the large body of literature on colorism that bears on this topic. For example, she asserts that hair is more important than skin color in determining who gets what in US society, a claim that is at odds with virtually all previous work with which I am aware.

All in all, there is nothing new or fresh here, although I did enjoy the photographs featuring various hair styles.

A fascinating, informative look at hair styles & ideologies........2000-05-04

This surveys beauty and black women alike, considering hair politics in black communities and examining the evolution of hair styles as symbols for changing ideologies. Contrasts between hair and blackness draw some intriguing conclusions.

Ethnographically Informed Research.......2000-04-29

You will want to buy this book (or at least skim through it), especially if you are Black/African-American and female. I say this because the author devotes a significant portion of the book sharing the dialogues from the interviews she had when she conducted her "ethnographically informed research" with African American females. As a African-American professor, who is also investigating communicative aspects of hair, I found Bank's book especially helpful because while indeed she covers numerous theoretical, feminist, social and cultural epistemologies, she also "breaks it down." So, do know that you do not have to be in college or a college graduate to appreciate this book. However, given that I am a professor, I do plan on using it as supplemental reading for future graduate and undergraduate courses because Banks has found a way to write about her scholarship in lay people's terms. In fact, the true "beauty" of Hair Matters is reading the responses from the girls and women, seeing the accompanying photos and other tidbits that are offered. Hair Matters is valueable, interesting, compelling, as well as thought provoking...definately a conversation starter. In short, this book is extremely easy reading, accessible regardless of ethnicity or gender and certainly not boring! In my opinion, I think others will be interested in reading this book cover to cover because it is unquestionably unlike any other current books on hair available on the market.

Dealing with death is never easy, but Lynn Johnston manages it with humor and tact. Grandma Marian died, and although sad, it was never morbid. I would recommend this book to someone dealing with loss, as it shows that letting go isn't easy, but it can be done.

Lynn Johnston is in a class by herself. She is by far and away the best illustrator and story teller ever to hit the funny pages. She's great! Her courage in portraying homosexuality, death, and adult themed issues, e.g. divorce and business is to be applauded. Her characters are all convincing and believable, and with the exception of obnoxious, spoiled April, truly delightful.

This book is in a class by itself. Nobody in cartoon history has created such delightful (save for April with her fresh mouth) and believable characters. Nobody else has been brave enough to confont issues like breast exams, death of family members and loss of pets as well as homosexuality. It is a brave new look at a superior caliber of comics that is more than just a comic.

I loved it! It was a very realistic, moving series of stripsthat dealt with death in a humane and compassionate as well asbelievable way.

The only negative comment I could make is that I just can't like April. I tried, but like a reader named becca71, I think April is a spoiled brat who is never disciplined and who goes out of her way to rile people. Although I don't approve of Jeremy's bullying tactics, April DID ask for it by singing that cruel song and for making obnoxious comments. I don't like the way poor Liz took the heat everytime bratty April got into something. I don't like the way April hogged the bathroom and impacted on Liz' time to get ready. I think April is a capital brat who has not a clue what "no" means and who is just a spoiled, silly, self-indulged little princess. Becca71 was right.

Good "Bathroom" Reading, But Otherwise Stale.......2007-09-11

Having grown up as the son of an insurance lawyer, I certainly have heard some weird tales from the legal profession. I have also seen my fair share of books about wacky laws and stupid things said by lawyers, judges and plaintiffs.

I was hoping this would be another funny book, but it really wasn't. Not many of the entries are funny and the author writes as if he were writing a writ. Much of the material comes from 16th century England, and doesn't translate well into modern times.

If you're looking for a good "back of the toilet" book, this is by all means good bathroom reading. It is not, however, worth the price to sit down and read.

Uninspired Origami Book.......2003-12-19

The tittle says "ultimate" but the contents are far from it. There's a modest selection of traditional models and several weak original models. The diagrams are clear and easy to follow. This book is geared to the beginner but is so limited in it's scope and quality of artistic expression that it does nothing to kindle an interest in origami." Origami Treasure Chest" is a great book for beginners, with loads of fun models.Try "Easy Origami" by Montrol for similar models, or better yet get Honda's "The World of Origami", perhaps the best origami book available.

Easy step by step instructions. Color pictures for each step with written descriptions. Comes complete with 2 sizes of paper in many colors and one pre-folded example. Starts with simple folds, includes action projects and more complicated folds. Explains the basic folds, and common bases such as Kite, Bird, Waterbomb and more. Lots of fun right from the start.

I had great hopes for this. Ran ads as they said and it costs us hundreds!

Concept is gold. Just don't get your hopes up........2007-02-03

The concept of this book makes great sense. However...

POINT 1: First and foremost, ask yourself this VITAL question: When you ACCURATELY describe where you live (as a township or municipality), will that location alone draw attention to your listing with such a low featured price? If the objective answer is "no" then this program will NOT work!!!! St. Louis is plagued by many pockets of unincorporated areas, leaving the homeowner to describe their location in terms of South County, North County or West County.

POINT 2: Using a newspaper to place your "5-Day Sale Ad" is antiquated in most markets. Again, that includes St. Louis. The St. Louis Post Dispatch is a poster child for poor presentation of real estate. Major realtors buy half-page and full-page ads to feature their listings in order of price, not location. For all others (mostly FSBOs), you're left to slot your ad within a tiny municipality that most people have never heard of (even those who live there). And you won't find realtor's listings repeated in these location-specific sections. So guess who looks there? All those who can barely afford your home at its starting bid price.

POINT 3: System doesn't work well in a Buyer's Market. Buyers can sit back and look at a surplus of homes with leisure. Why would they consider jumping into your home if they can't see it until day 4 or 5? Our home spent 6 months on the market in the $200K range using a realtor and attracting painfully few interested parties. We dropped the realtor, dropped our asking price by $15,000. We were then willing to accept $9,000 less than THAT selling by owner. Using this book's method we printed a starting bid at $40K BELOW THAT PRICE. By Friday, when you're supposed to receive a couple dozen or so calls at the minimum, we received only 3 phone calls. Newspapers don't credit you for pulling an ad on day 4. This little 5-day experiment cost us $250.00.

POINT 4: Unless you're in a progressive market, most people just don't understand the concept of a 5-day sale. Especially the real estate agents in my area. If they understood it, they would fear it. Now, if 100 interested parties had walked our home, then I imagine that we could have found 5 parties who understood the concept and would have been willing to play along. We didn't get 100. We brought in less than 20. None of them had done comparisons on the neighborhood. All were clueless.

POINT 5: The book is being revised so WAIT for the new release!!!! The version I purchased (the only one currently available) describes the Internet from a 1998 perspective which says it's not a prominent enough tool to possibly substitute for an ad in a newspaper. As you may have guessed, times have changed. I for one NEVER read the paper for available real estate (mostly out of poor presentation of the paper's real estate section). I use the Internet. I debated posting our home on MLS and [...] websites but you don't review those listings looking for an auction. I feared a massive onslaught of confused Buyers asking what I was trying to pull. Still, it would have attracted FAR more people in this market than our paper could have ever accomplished.

POINT 6: Visit the website associated with this book. It's ALL about buying bundled packages from the author's real estate expert friend. Those packages include listing your home on MLS and Realtor websites. I can't vouch for any of that... just found it to be opposite of what the book preaches. Maybe this will be incorporated into the 2007 edition.

Great book for a Seller's Market.......2006-11-04

A friend recommended the 5-Day method, and I bought the book. It's written like an infomercial, but the logic and methods are reasonable and smart. I was convinced, but I had 3 other people read it too. They had been skeptical of my description of how it worked, but they came away convinced, as well.

The book has a great explanation of the whole house selling process and a great checklist of what you need to do to be ready to put it on the market. However, the book was written and revised during Seller's markets. Prospective buyers were walking around with checkbooks in their pockets so they could be the first to put a bid on houses they liked. It's a different market now, and people don't want to commit on the day they see the house. They know they have time to think, and that's what they want to do.

I still think the method could work, it just didn't for us in these economic times. And we're much better prepared for selling the house using more conventional methods.

Could work but good results?.......2006-09-01

Our company that builds custom exec homes tried this method to move a property & to donate a percentage of net proceeds to charity. Everything went as planned, had 100+ people through, 25+ phone calls by Fri. Even had major newspaper coverage on the event. Made it past the low low starting bids at price but failed to even get to our reserve, which was basically the cost to build the home with a few thousand for our charity. The low starting price brought in people who had no business being there. Even when you advertise as a Exec luxury home, people only see the starting price as a reference. I had one woman screaming at me that I was using deceptive advertising since the bids start at price listed was so low. NUTCASE....It was exhausting, expensive and absolutely insulting with the offers we were getting. Reserve was $65,000 below its appraised value and we came short of the reserve by $30,000. And no one is going to tell me that my house is worth $90,000 below its appraisal. If you are in a good market area or need to sell quickly to get out from underneath a property, this is a good way. But, if I can't get my costs out of a property newly built, that's just sad. Some of it may be due to the markets, but not by that much.

Method works with a little updating.......2006-07-07

I sold my San Francisco condo using this method at market price.
I netted $30-$40k more than if I were to have sold it using the conventional method paying a 5-6% broker commision. Here are the updates I would suggest:

1. use a website service - George Cappony's 5-daysale.com does a great job. The website service should include a way to track the number of hits.
2. If you use a website, expect fewer calls (most people I talked to said they got 5-10). The website does the work for you, and you don't have to be at home to answer calls.
3. Use a minimum undisclosed reserve price to protect yourself. This should be what you think is market price minus the 6% commission you would normally pay. Then make the listing price REALLY low. If people don't say your price is ridiculous, then drop it even more.
4. Place your newspaper ad for 8 days instead of 5 days. Most people only read the Sunday paper, so if you start the previous Sunday, you will get maximum marketing exposure.
