Book Description
Originally published in 1993, Sit! was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times and was excerpted in Harper's magazine and The New York Times Book Review. George Booth, writing in the NYTBR, called it "the best of humor....Delightful!" while Cosmopolitan pronounced it "irresistible."
Renamed Remembrance of Dogs Past, this fetching collection of 70 disarmingly funny portraits is as fresh and funny as ever. Beginning with an 18th- or 19th-century ancestral portrait, Thierry Poncelet seamlessly paints in a dog's head over the original human subject's. The resulting tour de force is a fantasy that looks uncannily real, the dogs appearing all too human in their military regalia or elaborate gowns. And for a glorious twist, New Yorker humorist Bruce McCall names each dog and offers a brilliant tongue-in-cheek biographical sketch. Thus there's Lord Gristle (black Labrador), proprietor of a vast tabloid chain, with dark memories of rolled-up newspapers; Marie-Claire DuBossy (white poodle), who shocked France's poetry circles by refusing to beg; and Percival Horace Denbeigh (Jack Russell terrier), Britain's foremost military correspondent, with an infallible nose for news.
It's a howl.

Book Description
Text by Bruce McCall. "Exceptional book . . . the best of humor . . . refreshing. Delightful!" is how George Booth describes Sit! in The New York Times Book Review. Working in the dog-as-person-as-art vein of William Wegman (but at the other end of the spectrum), Theirry Poncelet combs flea markets and antique shops for ancestral portraits; restores them brush-stroke by brush-stroke; and then seamlessly paints in a dog's head over the subject's. The resulting tour de force is a fantasy that looks uncaninely real. Selection of the Book-of-the Month Club.

Fine writing and furry painting.......1999-04-13
M.Poncelet's "aristochiens" are hilarious and skillfully and, yes, artistically well done. There are about 70 paintings shown in the book and is a delight. But the diamond-studded collar on this book is the wonderfully creative writing by Bruce McCall. His little vignettes on the subject of each painting are a falling down delight. A grand sense of humor and an even grander sense of history and literary styles of the past make his contribution to this book a true masterpiece. While dog lovers will appreciate the book, even lowly cat people will enjoy the wit, style and imagination of Sit!: The Dog Portraits of Thierry Poncelet. Move over Poirot; Belgium has a new and better representative!

An extraordinary and comprehensive look at the timeless super-hero figures from 1960-1972.......2006-02-10
Commemorating the Justice League of America's 45th anniversary, Michael Eury's Justice League Companion: A Historical And Speculative Overview Of The Silver Age Justice League Of America is an extraordinary and comprehensive look at the timeless super-hero figures from 1960-1972. Justice League Companion includes interviews with Silver Age giants such as Stan Lee, Murphy Anderson, Joe Giella, Denny O'Neil, Mike Friedrich, Roy Thomas, and Jerry Bails; classic and previously unpublished art by JLA illustrators; photos of vintage JLA merchandise; an episode guide for the 1967 JLA TV cartoons; and an issue-by-issue index of the JLA's 1960-1975 adventures; and much more. Illustrated throughout in black-and-white, Justice League Companion is a "must- have" for fans and collectors of the Silver Age series, as well as fans of individual JLA heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, and is just plain fun to read.
GREAT BRUCE TIMM Cover!.......2005-10-08
Glad to have the book but it does ramble all over the place. Wish it was more organized and professionally laid out. There are way too many con drawings and not enough original art.
A CELEBRATION OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE.......2005-09-01
When I first started reading comics in the early 1970's, I was almost exclusively a Marvel fan and didn't read many DC comics at all. I was lucky enough to have an older brother who as a big DC can and among the books in his collection was a full run of Justice League of America from #50 through #120. Reading his comics (when he wasn't around, of course) was my introduction to one of the great superhero teams of all time and I ended up becoming a big fan. The Justice League companion is a 45th anniversary celebration of the team as well as a fascinating and informative tome of JLA lore. Writer Michael Eury gives JLA a vast treasure trove of trivia and interviews that gives the reader everything they ever wanted to know about the first super team of the Silver Age.
Eury begins with a FAQ section with answers supplied primarily by JLA creator Julius Schwartz that was culled from interviews with the legendary DC editor. Julie tells how the birth of the JLA came out of the popular success of the revivals of Golden Age characters The Flash and Green Lantern. JLA would be a revival of the Justice Society with Schwartz changing the name from "society" to "league". Schwartz goes on to explain why certain members were either included or excluded into the team's membership and the battle with Superman and Batman editors over how much those characters should be utilized in the JLA title. Schwartz also discusses the various JLA/JSA crossovers and the creation of Earth 2. In an interesting bit of trivia, he relates that calling the world of the JSA Earth 2, even though its characters came first, was simply an oversight!
In an exclusive interview that Eury conducted in 2004, Stan Lee recounts how his boss, Martin Goodman, mandated that Stan create a super team to compete with the very popular Justice League, and thus came up with the Fantastic Four.
One of the most interesting interviews in the book was with Roy Thomas and Jerry Bails, the creators of one of the earliest, and certainly most famous fanzines, Alter-Ego, in the early 1960's. His work on the fanzine, and the connections he made in the comic industry would eventually lead Thomas to Marvel in the mid-1960s where he would become their top writer and later Editor-in-Chief. Thomas and Bails discuss those early years and their correspondences with people like Schwartz and Murphy Anderson and how some of their early ideas were incorporated into the JLA.
Thomas also talks about the secret JLA/Avengers cross-over (sort of) that took place in Avengers # 70 and Justice League #75. Thomas created the Squadron Sinister with a team of villains based on JLA members, while Denny O' Neil did, as I recall, a Halloween story in which the JLA encounter somewhat altered versions of the Avengers Thor & Captain America...and Captain Marvel, although curiously it was the Fawcett Captain Marvel. Other interviews in the book include Murphy Anderson, Denny O' Neil, and Mike Friedrich.
The book is simply loaded with valuable information about the JLA, although the info is limited to the Silver Age. It includes a timeline of all super teams created in the Silver Age from the Black Hawks in 1957 to the Defenders in 1971. There is also a splendid index to every JLA/JSA crossover of the Silver Age including a full cover gallery. Eury also includes Bios on those artists and writers who worked on the JLA in the Silver Age including Gardner Fox, Mike Sekowsky. Neal Adams, Murphy Anderson, Schwartz, O' Neil, and all the rest. One of my favorite things in the book is the alternate covers of various comics. For example one shows the cover to Fantastic Four #1 but with the JLA battling the gargantuan creature instead of the FF. Another features a JLA cover with the Avengers.
Michael Eury did a fantastic job on this book. His interviews were informative and lively and the wealth of information is just astounding. A must have for fans of the Justice League.

Book Description
There have been books about dogs since books began -- manuals on training and raising them, stories featuring dogs, and memoirs seen through the eyes of dogs. Lately, there has been a rash of books that purport to tell us what dogs are thinking, such as the bestselling What Dogs Are Thinking.
This is a book about a Jewish boy and his sled dogs -- also a couple of wolves, a parrot or two...and Pinkwater's uncle...and his father. Daniel Pinkwater, prodigious author of books for children, popular commentator on National Public Radio, and dog trainer to the stars, is unclear about what dogs are thinking. In fact, he appears to be completely baffled by them. He considers himself lucky that his dog does not foul the carpet, bite people, or run in traffic. Unlike every other dog book ever written, this one does not make the reader feel more stupid than the author.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-01-05
For those of you unfamiliar with the works of the great author, Daniel Pinkwater, this book is definitely a great introduction to his warm wit, insight and great personality (it can't help but pop off of the page). This book is really a Valentine to all of the dogs that have come and gone in Pinkwater's life. This starts all the way back during his formative years, as a young boy, when his Uncle Boris gave his family a "purebred" Pekignese, up until his acquired Matilda, his elderly wolf hound, when he was already married to his wife, Jill Pinkwater (also a wonderfully talented writer).
Though I haven't read this book in two years, the material is still fresh in my memory. Not ony did these dogs teach Pinkwater how to be a better master, but also brought him some wonderful life lessons, through his companionship with them. I feel that he really had dog lovers in mind, when he penned this book of short stories, but it definitely will appeal to people who have never even owned a pet dog. The stories are so engaging, funny and (even) tender.
I definitely reccomend this....five bones out of five......
"What am I laughing at?".......2005-10-03
I borrowed this book on the recommendation of someone I met at the vet's office, guffawed as I read chunks of it, and bought three copies, one as a gift, one to keep, and one as a loaner I wouldn't worry about. The recipient of the gift was the one who wrote "John keeps wanting to know what I am laughing at." We are both dog nuts. My non-dog nut housemate would probably rate it a 3 or 4.
Great book for any dog-lover.......2002-06-05
Daniel Pinkwater is a very smart and funny writer -- one who knows the value of not taking himself too seriously. This thoroughly enjoyable book points out what most perceptive dog-lovers know: that dogs have a lot to teach us, about them and about ourselves. Pinkwater's dogs have taught him, among other things, that having the capacity to be both silly and dignified enriches a life.
I ended up reading this book one chapter at a time before bedtime, and each night I'd go to sleep with a smile.
If you loves dogs, you'll enjoy this book -- which also makes a great gift for the dog-lovers in your life.
Truly interesting........2002-04-19
This book was not quite what I expected when I bought it. My first thought when I saw it on the shelf was, "Oh, a new Daniel Pinkwater novel! I better get that." About halfway through the first story, though, I began to be suspicious. "This isn't a novel. . .or is it? Is he kidding, or is he serious? Is this nonfiction?" This is one of the great things about Daniel Pinkwater--he keeps you on your toes, always trying to guess what is next to come. By the time I'd finished the book, I'd learned some neat dog-training tips (in case I should ever need them). I'd laughed guiltily and hysterically at the idea of a parrot being frightened to death by the misconception that it was being cooked, and I'd thought a lot about how funny life can be. This book is good for reading over one long sitting or for digesting one anecdote at a time.
Rave reviews for Uncle Boris in the Yukon.......2001-12-03
Anyone who knows Daniel Manus Pinkwater's work is destined to buy this book for the sheer pleasure of carefully digesting every syllable he writes, as always. In this autobiographical book he bears his huge soul, his comical side (that we all know and love) and his uncanny, campy, unusual way of looking at the world, all as it relates to his many relationships with Canines.
Buy it! You will not be disappointed.
Book Description
This major new study focuses on film music as a device that controls its audience by using emotion as a powerful tool. Kevin Donnelly emphasizes the manipulative and ephemeral character of film music. He discusses not only traditional orchestral film music but also film music's colonization of television and the relation of pop music and film.
Film and Television Music challenges accepted notions of film music as restricted to film by looking at its use in television and its influence in the world of pop music. It questions traditional assumptions about "valued" film music, either from "name" composers or from the golden era of classical Hollywood.
Focusing on topics as diverse as horror, pop music in film, ethnic signposting, television drama, and the soundtrack without a film, this original study introduces a range of new perspectives on one of the most complex and fascinating aspects of filmmaking.

Thought provoking.......2007-01-29
I originally borrowed this book from the library and thought it was so good I wanted to read it again. I was not able to buy it at a book store as I was told it was out of print, well, it was available from Amazon.
While I am confronted with comments that I consider rude, etc, in everyday life I am usually unable to respond due to one or more of the following reasons:
A. I don't care.
B. Think that the other person is having a bad day.
C. Am too shocked to reply (in an effective manner) or
D. Don't think on a negative/nasty level to reply.
This book has given me a better understanding and the importance of 'sementics' and 'pre-suppisitions', etc.
I have really found this book valuable, 'When did you think I didn't?'
Regards
Elizabeth
Clear, practical and helpful........2005-11-22
The book was clear, practical and interesting reading. The approach was structured and logical with good examples of the different ways people use words to communicate and/or manipulate. The information on how word choices affect/influence other people, and how you can respond/compensate when the effect is directed against you were helpful and effective. One review I read felt the suggested responses were flippant and provocative. I did not agree with that viewpoint after reading the book. The responses the reviewer was referring to were directed at someone who was not truly concerned with the content of what they had said, but in the reaction they were trying to provoke. Ms. Elgin said the responses (basically to respond as if the comment had been positive rather than negative) took the fun out of what was a game to them; and I have found that to be true.
The only thing I found difficult were the exercises she gave to allow you to see how intuitively you do understand these things. I understood them when she explained, and when I read her examples; but I found I couldn't effectively apply the understanding to the exercises with any certainty. I'd have loved some answer pages somewhere! Another specific exercise she gave that I found difficult had to do with the sensory modes people use in communication. I had no difficulty understanding or identifying what was being used, but when given an opportunity to take a comment using touch sensory analogies and convert them to sight or hearing . . . I found it extremely difficult. Maybe my brain works differently than hers and many who reviewed the book! The information was clear, the implications were helpful, but applying the information for purposes of shaping the emotional atmosphere intentionally was difficult for me to work out.
I've shared alot of the content with various people and have found them as interested in the concepts as I was. I would recommend the book--especially to those who may not have spent large amounts of time studying interpersonal communication.
The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense at work.......2005-09-18
The book is easy reading but require serious effort to follow the recommendation
As with all of her books, this one's great.......2005-04-28
Elgin is probably the grandmother of verbal self-defense, and teaching people to deal more effectively with verbal abuse. In this book she turns her attention specifically to the work place. If you buy one book on how to deal with nasty abusive people in the workplace, get this one.
Her work is based on sound psycholinguistic principles, so this is not just another pop psych. book written by someone trying to make a buck.
The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense by Suzette Elgin.......2003-10-24
This work provides a good development for constructive
argument aimed at management of confrontal modes. The author
describes classic behaviors; such as, the placater, the blamer,
the distracter and the leveler. There is a good section on
voice management which describes unifying metaphors and balanced
speech. The work describes practically every confrontation
imaginable with appropriate voice responses and body language.
This book will help you manage almost any type of confrontation
constructively. For this reason, it is well worth the price.
