The essential book for illustrators.......2005-12-16
I have been buying this annual for more than 20 years now, and it never disappoints. This new format is better for several reason. Each image gets a full page (better viewing), which makes it a bigger book. There is also more info in it, aside from the images. It is smaller in page size by a few inches, which makes for easier storage and probably less postage. If you love art, or if you want to see your peers or mentors works in an incredible array of variety, this is the book you need!
Illustor 46th Rocks!.......2005-10-07
If your planing to be an illustrator or simply love i
illustrations, than this is certainly a good purchase.
The new size of this annual fits perfectly. It contains
a lot of different artists artworks and their comments.
Don't miss it!

Book Description
This volume is an interesting guide to the identification of everyday Pharaonic Egyptian clothing. It discusses dated material from excavated sources, as well as giving the construction of typical pieces and an indication of how the ancient Egyptians saw these garments. The book deals with each garment type in a separate chapter and covers such items as cloth and leather loincloths, dresses, bag-tunics, and various types of headgear. It is well-illustrated with numerous line drawings, as well as illustrations depicting various surviving garments. There is a glossary which describes both the basic garment types and the sewing techniques which may be encountered.

excellent guide for the interested reader.......2000-08-17
Written by a textile specialist, this is an excellent guide to Pharaonic Egyptian clothing. The book deals with the construction of items, based on surviving material (cloths, dresses, headgear, aprons, straps). Well illustrated in black and white, a glossary explains the terms found throughout the book, and a bibliography for further reading is also provided. Highly recommended for those with an interest in clothing and Ancient Egyptian society.

Not as good as the first book, but still good........2003-02-14
This second outing of the "Mutts" characters wasn't as good as the first book. I still found it to be enjoyable though. It still gave me a cozy warm feeling inside to read the book. I hope the third book picks back up and is as good as the first book which I gave 5 stars.
Every day's a new adventure. Yesh........2000-01-13
Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" is Krazy Kat for the nineties on up -- pup Earl and cat Mooch in a world of their own, entertained by their cast of fellow characters. What's really engaging is watching these two interact with the "peoples" and animals around them. They're not that different from you or me. Or me, anyway. Who couldn't see herself in Mooch's forbidden leap to the table? Earl tells him cats don't belong up there, to which Mooch proudly dances and sings, "Table, shtable, kitty on the table." There's a sweet thread running throughout that comes to the fore in the story of lost kitten Shtinky Puddin', as well as the tale of the egg who finally pops his shell open to the delight of his proud parents. Let me not forget McDonnell's drawing style, which is absolutely spare, cunning, and evocative (shades of Krazy Kat again). If only peoples everywhere read Mutts; what happier peoples we'd be.
This Is The Best Written Comic Strip In A Long Time.......1999-03-20
This book was great!!! It combines the cute and funny habits of animals not only Mooch and Earl. It points out their silly perception of humans. It's a funny interpretation of the animal mind. And It's funny.

Informative But Repetitious.......2007-01-11
This is a good book for finding out about Barks' life, but it is very repetitious because different interviewers kept asking him the same questions over and over. As Perry Mason said, "that question has been asked and answered." I would prefer a straight chronological biography that doesn't keep going over the same ground. Also, it could use a few more illustrations and a better discussion of how Barks taught himself cartooning.
Funny, Insightful, Great!.......2003-07-19
Wow, I picked up a copy of this book in paperback near where I live and I loved it. Just LOVED it. I'm lucky it made it up here where I am. I'm a big Duck fan, so I wanted to read more about the history and stuff, but I never knew how well-spoken a man Carl Barks was, and this Donald Ault--he's super! He's super because he takes Barks seriously AS A CREATIVE GENIUS, which he is/was. I see from the back cover Ault's written some pretty deep stuff, he's a professor, but he's really readable. I tend to think most (or lots) or people who are really into the Duck are pretty intelligent folks--those I know are. I don't have a heck of a lot of education, like a master's degree or book writing or whatever, but I read this whole book and I understood it and it's truly enriched my experience--and not just of Donald Duck. I can't recommend it enough.

Customer Reviews:
Where did this guy come from?.......2003-01-24
Not exactly written by a savy Flash5 user.
Definitely a good Flash title to have..........2002-11-26
This is a nicely written book covering a variety of areas, and its really nice to see a chapter about actual graphic design in a Flash book too. Its really well-done as a step-by-step book for users who have an understanding of Flash that are wanting to jump to the next level and use Flash for more than just your basic point-and-click movie. Nice job guys!
Great piece of work!.......2001-11-30
"Instant Macromedia Flash 5" is written for webdesigners/programmers who
already know the basics of Flash (drawing, actionscripting...) and want
to start over to advanced topics.
The book is divided into several "real world" examples such as building
an MP3 player or constructing a game in Flash so the reader can
jump into the chapter he likes best or which fits his needs most.
The chapters themselves are built up as step by step instructions which
are written very clear and have screenshots where necesarry. Even if you
cannot get your own work running during the reading and working through
a chapter you can still have a look at the flash project files provided
on the CD to see what you did wrong.
Although it is possible to jump through the chapters nonlinear chapter 1,
"Designing in Flash" should definitely be a must for all readers because
it helps avoiding mistakes in design others already did an learned from.
The book has a really useful index that helps you locate the information
you need in your work.
All in all this is a great lecture for everyone who wants to learn how
to create advanced flash movie content and already knows the basics.
The only thing that could be improved is the paper of the cover that tends
to split into cardboard and coating when used in the daily work.
Just what i Needed.......2001-11-29
This book is for people like me that need to know exactly how things are done , step by step and line by line. There is a huge cross-section of things covered in this book, and every bit of it is described fully and presented in a way that you can put right into use.
All flash books should be like this, it is a keeper, & a great gift for that talented web person you know who could benefit from the kick-start this book gives.
Great Information.......2001-11-07
I really liked the information on design. As a technical person that information was worth all the money of the book. Then there is the other chapters of the book. In found it to be very constructive and usable information! Very easy to follow and a great book! I think a must buy for any Flash user, whatever level.
Book Description
In a series of powerful strokes, the music of Beethoven's last years redefined his legacy and enlarged the realm of experience accessible to the creative imagination. Maynard Solomon's Late Beethoven investigates the phenomenon of the final phase, focusing especially on the striking metamorphosis in Beethoven's system of beliefs that began early in his fifth decade and eventually amounted to a sweeping realignment of his views of nature, antiquity, divinity, and human purpose.
Using the composer's letters, diaries, and conversation books, Solomon traces Beethoven's attraction to a constellation of heterogeneous ideas, drawn from Romanticism, Freemasonry, comparative religion, Eastern initiatory ritual, Mediterranean mythology, aesthetics, and classical and contemporary thought. Through these often arcane sources, Beethoven gained access to a vast reservoir of imagery and ideas with the potential to expand music's expressive and communicative reach. This "multitude of productive images," writes Solomon, "provided kindling for the blaze of his imagination."
Late Beethoven is a rich tapestry of original perspectives on Beethoven's music. Solomon sees the Seventh Symphony as a deployment of the rhythms of antiquity in an effort to revalidate the premises of the Classical world; the Ninth as an essay on the prospects and limits of affirmative, monumental endings; and the "Diabelli" Variations as a doorway to the universe of metaphoric significances that attach to beginnings. In the Violin Sonata in G, op. 96, Solomon finds a restoration of the full range of pastoral experience that the ancient poets had known. In the Grosse Fuge he locates issues of fragmentation and reassembly, and he suggests that pivotal passages of the last sonatas evoke sacred states of being.
These stimulating perspectives illuminate the inner world within which Beethoven dwelled during his last fifteen years and the ways in which his thought and music may be interrelated. Written in accessible and eloquent prose, and with numerous music examples, Late Beethoven is a serious contribution to understanding this miraculous quantum leap in Beethoven's creative evolution.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read..........2007-01-11
Sounds banal but this is really a good read on late Beethoven.
Soloman's done his homework and he writes a nice, clear, subtly postmodern criticism.
Especially fine is his discussion of Romanticism.
good book in general.......2006-11-03
I got this book and read through some chapters, and thought that the book gives some good or objective views on late Beethoven. But for some reason, I don't quite agree with some parts of book when author quoted references and associated Beethoven with some sort of religion or political believes. Although I do know there're some transcendental spirits, sublimity and profundity in Beethoven's late music, in his sonatas, string quartets, Diabelli variation among others, he is not religious even till the end but perhaps the greatest music genius and artist. Author also explored Romanism in late Beethoven, which I took less pleasure in reading. I found it less interesting with some of his writing style, when he quoted poems or others words and let reader go with him on some sort of purposeless or boring ride. But overall it is good book on late Beethoven, especially the chapter on Diabelli variations.
An essential book for the serious musician.......2006-06-22
Maynard Solomon is probably the most important Beethoven biographer of modern times. His book is essential research for serious musicians and composers who wish to gain insight into late Beethoven. Solomon's writing is dense; every word and paragraph count. Many, many musical examples, so the ability to read music (and knowledge of music theory) is a must. This is not a casual book, but if you are up for it, it is among the most rewarding Beethoven studies around.
Richard Russell
[...]
Solomon on Late Beethoven.......2004-02-05
Maynard Solomon has followed-up his distinguished biography of Beethoven (rev.ed. 1998)with an outstanding study of the music of Beethoven's third period and of the intellectual and emotional changes in Beethoven's outlook that likely contributed to Beethoven's late masterworks. These works include the Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, the Diabelli Variations, the final string quartets, including the great fugue, and the final five piano sonatas.
Solomon's biography of Beethoven was both notable and controversial for its psychoanalytical approach. I find that approach mostly lacking here. For his approach to Beethoven's inner life and development, Solomon draws extensively on Beethoven's Tagebuch, which Solomon describes as "the intimate diary [Beethoven] kept between 1812 and 1818 to which he confided his innmost feelings and desires" (p.2). Solomon finds a "sea change" (as he titles his Prologue) in Beethoven's system of belief beginning in about 1810. Following Beethoven's comparatively fallow period as a composer between 1812-1816, this change in Beethoven's beliefs bore its consequences in the works of his final maturity. In general, Solomon finds Beethoven's beliefs changed from the rational, enlightment, classical thought that characterized, for Solomon, the first and second period works, to a more romantic belief system that focused on inwardness, theology, (I found it fascinating that Beethoven showed awareness of and interest in Eastern thought in the Tagebuch), nature, and imagination. In sum, Beethoven in his final period came more under the influence of romanticism (whatever that notoriously vague term might mean) than is sometimes realized. Furthermore, with his nearly total deafness and the failure of his attempts to establish a lasting relationship with a woman, Beethoven tried mightily to devote his life to the pursuit of his art rather than to his own personal, less exalted ends.
The book consists of twelve chapters, some of which were earlier published, which Solomon has worked into a coherent whole. Of the twelve chapters, seven are examinations of the sources of Beethoven's thought and deal in broad concepts. Thus two chapters explore the relationship between concepts of classicism and romanticism -- highly slippery concepts as Solomon realizes-- and argue that Beethoven's final work and thought show an increased romantic influence -- particularly in its transcendent element. Two chapters discuss the possible influence of Freemasonry upon Beethoven while an additional chapter discusses the increased religious dimension in Beethoven's final works, including the influence of Eastern thought.
The remaining five chapters focus on individual works. The Diabelli Variations receive two detailed chapters. The first of them explores Diabelli's waltz theme and the attraction it might have had for Beethoven while the second is a detailed analysis of the pattern of each of the 33 variations, including copious musical illustrations. There is an outstanding chapter on Beethoven's opus 96 violin sonata and its source in pastorale. There is a chapter on the seventh symphony (not usually considered a late work) and on the influence it shows of Greek poetical meters, and a thorough chapter on the Ninth Symphony. This description only briefly touches the scope of the book as Solomon has provocative things to say about the last quartets, particularly on the opus 130 quartet and on the question of its two finales: the grosse fugue and the much simpler rondo which Beethoven substituted for it. And, as I mentioned, Solomon says much about the last piano sonatas, the Missa Solemnis and about the song cycle "An die Ferne Geliebte" even though these works do not have a specific chapter devoted to them.
I found it a joy to read this book. It combines a love and emotional understanding of Beethoven's music with deep erudition and a love of learning. Beethoven's music and intellectual development are well-discussed even if the reader finds himself not agreeing with all Solomon's arguments. The book is full of detailed consisderation of specific works including quotations from Beethoven's scores. It is probably a book that will be most appreciated by those who have some familiarity with Beethoven's music, particularly the works of the third period, rather than by those coming to the music for the first time.
This is a difficult, challenging, and revealing study of late Beethoven combining scholarship, philosophical thinking, and a love and understanding of Beethoven's music.

When Myst--the bestselling CD-ROM game of all time--was released, it was a labor of love between two brothers and a small staff. The team used relatively simple tools and pure imagination to craft a game that was like no other and that appealed to millions of people worldwide. When the Miller brothers and their growing company, Cyan, began work on the sequel, Riven, they knew that topping themselves would be no easy task.
Not just for Myst junkies, From Myst to Riven is a wonderful journey through the minds and imaginations of everyone who created this more-than-worthy sequel. Told alongside dozens of beautiful full-page photos, development sketches, maps, and diagrams, the book describes the ground-breaking process that was the creation of the most highly anticipated computer game of all time. Throughout each chapter, you can follow the entire development process, from the first seeds of a concept to fully rendered realization. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes stories, profiles of the creators, and insight into their inspirations to keep Myst junkies sated, but the true gold of this volume is the artwork.
More than simple backgrounds for gameplay, the design and look of the original Myst was beautiful, haunting, and original. Riven far exceeds the standards set by the original, delivering even more breathtaking imagery and landscapes, combining the weird and fantastic with the familiarity of nature.
Customer Reviews:
A lovely book remenscent of the Myst games.......2006-04-03
Exquisitely illustrated, beautiful layout and easy to read, this book provides insight into the making of these groundbreaking computer games. Richard Kadrey has created this volume clearly showing his love and appreciation of the Myst game. This book should be included in the library of every design college, as it shows the development, mapping and design process of the creation of Myst.
The book has an introduction by Rand and Robyn Miller and is divided into four parts: Inception, Preparation, Construction and Completion. Included is even a lexicon of the D'ni grammar.
Well worth the wait and the price!
WOW!.......2005-05-31
Despite having read all the five star articles, about how wonderful this books is. I was still utterly blown away by it when i received mine. The book cost me about 85$ with shipping, but I live in DK so in addition I had to pay extra tax totaling a cost of over 100$, despite that this book is still well worth it. note however if you live outside the US. you might want to check shipping options since this book is very large (about 35cm in height)and it will cost a great deal to ship, thus you might get it via regular mail (witch takes forever). For anyone interested in CG, computer game history, Myst, D'ni, or Multimedia, This book is an absolute must!
Books and Ages and Life.......2003-09-22
"From Myst to Riven" is a positively amazing book that follows the arduous journey of the Cyantists from creating two of the greatest games ever made. All the way through Inception, Preparation, Construction and Completion, Kadrey takes such an in-depth look at the inner workings of Cyan that you feel as if you helped them along in making it. Breathtaking visuals and intriguing narrative make this a book that's a must-have for any hardcore fan.
A gorgeous, glorious book . . ........2002-08-21
Most computer games don't much for me. I'm not into shoot-'em-ups, and I learned back in the days of the original ADVENTURE and ZORK that I wasn't that great at puzzle-solving. Oh the other hand, I've been playing MYST and RIVEN regularly for years, even though I haven't solved that many of the puzzles. I'm what this author calls a "tourist," a player who just likes to wander about the Ages of these games and gawk at the exquisite artwork and music, and marvel at the fantastic realism the design team has managed to put into their worlds. This book brings all that out in some detail, describing how Rand and Robyn Miller came up with the basic ideas, how Richard Vander Wende turned all their plans on their heads and made the game the masterpiece that it is, how even the sounds you hear are apt to be clues (I never knew that!), and -- above all -- how none of the team let themselves be hurried in their quest for something as close to perfection as they could manage. Like Tolkien, they even invented a detailed language for the D'ni. Amazing stuff.
A book no Myst, gaming, or computer fan should be without!.......2002-03-18
This gigantic book features stunning full page renders of key scenes from Riven, as well as various high resolution screencaptures. It also takes you through the entire process of making Riven, from the completion of Myst to the completion of Riven. It shows you how the story was developed (and additional bits to the story), how the stunning photo-realistic graphics were acheived, how the sound was done, how the design and visual look came about. In the background, it tracks Cyan's rise from a small company in a garage into one of the most profitable independent game designers in the world. Being a fan of the whole Myst universe and of computer technology in general, I absolutely love this book. I have it on my coffee table. While I have other things to attend to, my guests can flip through it until I have time to sit down. The process that went into making Riven was enormous and complex, and I salute Mr. Kadrey for getting down into words.

The chocolate wars between industry giants Hershey and Mars are anything but sweet. In The Emperors of Chocolate, Joel Glenn Brenner reveals the bitter legal and marketing fights, palace intrigue, and personality clashes that dominate Hershey and Mars--and the candy industry as a whole. A talented writer and dogged researcher, Brenner concludes that after decades of competition between the two companies, the drama still is unfolding. Will Mars--privately held and publicity shy--be the ultimate winner with its global game plan? Or will it be Hershey--publicly traded and philanthropy-minded--with its aggressive strategy of growth by acquisition?
Brenner, a former Washington Post financial reporter, tells the stories of how Forrest Mars Sr. and Milton S. Hershey turned their two companies from small mom-and-pop operations into international forces over the last century. While they may have started small, their products--Mars's Snickers and M&M's and Hershey's milk-chocolate bars and Kisses--are ubiquitous. Hershey was a benevolent philanthropist who spent hundreds of millions to create a town and orphanage to fulfill his altruistic dreams. Mars was a short-tempered perfectionist who yelled at anyone who failed to meet his standards. "What made Forrest's blood rush was the thrill of mastering new opportunities and taming uncharted worlds," the author writes. "Like Milton Hershey, he was driven by his visions; but where Milton Hershey saw utopia, Forrest Mars saw conquest." Nine years in the making, The Emperors of Chocolate is a satisfying read about the two titans of the chocolate world and how they capitalized on our love of sweets. --Dan Ring

As satisfying as your favorite chocolate indulgence.......2007-05-06
Ranks with the great business books of the last twenty years. An in- depth history of the Mars and Hershey empires, the history of chocolate and the personalities that created these great companies. The sucesses and mistakes astound, the basic goodness of Milton Hershey, his benevolence to his workers and his town and his ultimate unhappiness in losing the love of his life at a young age gives a great feeling of a man and time. The arrogance, power hunger and rigidity of the Mars family will make you wince, and remind you of the worst boss you ever had (especially the one who pays 30-40% above the industry average). Absolutely fascinating, a book you can't put down.
Fantastic.......2007-03-26
The Emperors of Chocolate was fantastic. I started reading it with absolutely no idea what to expect, and what I found was profoundly interesting. I would recommend this for anyone who, as I did, assumes that the candy industry is a real life version of Willy Wonka. The book is a thoroughly engrossing story describing two companies that are basically the opposite of that image, and of each other. Read it now.
Your first look at the Chocolate-industry?.......2007-01-24
As a preperation for a new job in the Internet-business I was searching for a book that layed out the history of Mars Inc. and the Chocolate-business. I found "The Emperors of Chocolate" and after consuming the book in just a few days, I will warmly recommend it.
The book lays out the history of the US-based giants Hershey and Mars. And as a european the Hershey brand and history was totaly new to me.
I now have a basic knowledge of the business, the products and companies, not just Hershey and Mars, and last but not least, the history and personality of some of the pioneering persons in the business, their drive and goals.
Eg. Milton Hershey's creation and support of an orphnage for boys, which still excist today. On my next trip to the States I shure want to visit the town Hershey and see for myself.
And the story of Forest Mars sr. and now the brothers who run the business of Mars Inc. The book gives a comprehensive collection of details regarding the management of Mars Inc., which I have not found anywhere else.
If you are interested in the Chocolate-business, with emphassis on Mars and Hershey, then this is the book for you.

The candy monopoly!.......2006-12-21
The story of how Mars and Hershey have fought for control over the candy market is one of the most fascinating in business. Mars is one of the most secretive companies on the planet and the recopies for M&M's and Mars bars are closely guarded. Hershey in sharp contrast was crated be a paradise for the workers of the company with stores, theaters, theme parks and all of their needs taken care. These companies ruthlessly battled it out and while others are covered including Nestle the real winner are Hershey and mars controlling almost 75 percent of candy in the United States. If you are looking for a good business story this is the best. It is well written and a lot of fun to read.
