    Book Description

The finest examples of this distinctive Islamic art form ever published.

Within three centuries of its advent, Islam had produced an architecture and a calligraphic art, including that of illumination, that have seldom been equaled and never surpassed, the one centered on the Mosque and the other on the Qur'an. But whereas Islamic architecture is world famous, its calligraphic art has remained relatively unknown and inaccessible. Black-and-white photographs of the art of calligraphy are plentiful, but a page of script, impressive though it can be in black and white, loses much without the tints of the paper and the ink.

Splendours of Qur'an Calligraphy and Illumination reproduces the formal excellence of colors and texture that distinguish these artistic masterpieces. In all, 180 openings are displayed, carefully chosen from the greatest collections of Qur'an manuscripts in the world. 180 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Get "Better Nasty than Sexy" instead.......2005-11-19

This book contains some stunning examples of modern-day erotic art--girls so lush they are definitely not real, but painted so convincingly they seem like they should be. Easily as good as anything by Sorayama or Olivia, although backgrounds are entirely non-existent. However, if you buy this book the royalties will go to the wrong person. Ricky Carralero imported the originals from a Mexican artist named Armando Huerta, put his signature on them, and then sold off both the rights to publish them AND the original artwork under his name and without giving a cent to the actual artist.

Armando continues to paint new work, and has a collection called "Better Nasty than Sexy" also available from Amazon. Buy it instead and make sure the right person profits from it.

As it has been stated before, Ricky Carralero actually painted over the works of another artist and took credit for it. Please consider this before purchasing this art book.

This book is all about the female form. Ricky's drawings of the breasts are as arrousing as a drawing can be. I don't have much to say about his originality, or variety. And good luck finding a background. But for those who celebrate the female form, this book is for you.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic and Ironic Fun........2006-10-13

Cynical, sentimental and slick. I gave this to my dad and he thought it was a very sensible book. I found it demonstrates how paranoid we have become - imagine a society where a child could walk into a neighbors house alone and without an invitation? It also an excellent collection of old illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars A tiny coffee table book that shouldn't be taken seriously.......2006-08-13

THE GOOD CITIZEN'S HANDBOOK is mildly humorous book that features 1950s era illustrations of upstanding American citizens and corny advice about how to behave properly.

I get that author Jennifer McKnight-Trontz intended this to be a funny read/look but some of the information included here is neither funny nor valuable. Instead it falls flat on its face when trying to rib mid-century American values.

With absurd information about how a good citizen properly does stretching exercises or righteously plants a tree, this book fails to deliver much needed advise for American-born or recently naturalized citizens who appreciate humor and want valuable advice.

If THE GOOD CITIZEN'S HANDBOOK were actually side-splittingly funny, I could live with its lack of good information, but because it is only mildly funny, I find it unfortunate that the book offers so little good advice.

Still if you like those fantastic mid-century line drawing illustrations, THE GOOD CITIZEN'S HANDBOOK is worth a look. Just don't expect anything more than a mildly funny, very small coffee table book that will keep guests amused for only a few minutes.

      -- Regina McMenamin

5 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud funny both for the generation born in the early 1900's and for the next generation.......2006-01-02

The Good Citizen's Handbook is a hilarious throw-back to the ideals of a bygone era--the 1920's through 1960's. McKnight-Tronz has created a visually appealing look at "good citizenship" as preached by olden days civic texts, citizenship manuals, government pamphlets, and scouting manuals. It's no surprise that this book has gotten some negative reviews for racism (no illustrations with anyone other than Caucasians), sexism (women belong in the house, doing chores), and the like.

Is this a satire or a book telling us to go back to good old-fashioned values? McKnight-Trontz seems to leave that up to the reader for interpretation. Some passages seems to be included purely for their laugh factor, but many others harken back to values that young people of today could use. Enjoy this book in whatever light it reaches you, and make sure the children of today get a taste of older wisdom.

      5 out of 5 stars Clueless.......2005-04-12

Do any of you people realize that this is suposed to be funny, poking fun at these images and ideas? Lighten up. Just like teh book "Hang in There" it is supposed to be FUNNY. Get with it.

5 out of 5 stars Note: some reviews by others contain false information.......2005-03-04

"The Good Citizen's Handbook: A Guide to Proper Behavior" by Jennifer McKnight-Trontz is book informative, helpful, nostalgic, and a bit funny at times. In any event this book or at least the good items in it should be taught to all children by their parents, and reinforced at school.

Please take note and consider this when reading other Amazon customer reviews:
McKnight-Trontz explains in the introduction that both the information and images in this book were culled from civic textbooks, scouting manuals, government pamphlets and citizenship manuals from the 1920s through the 1960s. See my comments on the illustrations near the end of my review.

There is a lot of good information here and many different viewpoints on what the definition of a good citizen is, and how children and adults can do things that constitute being a good citizen. Some of the information seemed a bit comical to me yet other parts were things that (sadly) I had never discussed with my children before just because it had not occurred to me to discuss them, therefore the book served as a basis for some good discussion. I am happy that I read this to my children and think it could and should be re-read periodically, perhaps a few times per year! I also thought, as I read this, that I was never taught many things in this book when I attended public school in the 1970s and 1980s, as part of social studies/civics (which is a shame). I also think that much of this SHOULD be taught to all children in school. If they can teach sex ed and programs to discourage drug use, then they can and should teach this stuff as well. I also was surprised at the high level of patriotism here. I was surprised that in my public school experience, I did not learn any of this "patriotic attitude" and was surprised that from the 1920s-1960s this stuff was being taught in schools. I think we need a revival of this!

The book is divided into chapters covering different areas we can and should be good citizens in: with ourselves, in the family, at school and work, in the neighborhood, in the community, in our country and in the world. The section about ourselves includes personality traits, behaviors, character traits and values as well as health recommendations such as avoiding infection, how to cough and not spread germs, how to stand with good posture and what to eat. The comical parts are the examples which highlight things that someone thought to be very important such as that a good citizen eats "plenty of meat" which made me wonder if this was from a government publication connected with the USDA. Behaviors such as not talking back, controlling oneself and obeying the law are other high points. A section titled "Your Happy Family" contains good advice:

"The urge to get more and more luxuries consumes many Americans. In the "old days" the members of the family had very little in the way of luxuries or even comforts; they depended mainly on one another to make life happy and interesting. Today, we are more "gadget-minded." We tend to think less of human relations, and more of things that we and buy and use, often to impress other people. This has had its effect in weakening the home.
Think less of what the "Joneses" are doing or buying, and more about how to have a good time with your family without spending money. Think about what really makes you and your family happy-important things such as each other's company, a good story, exercise, and learning."

      I loved that section!

The section on school and work includes what we now call "anti-bullying" advice: play fair, play with "the laws of clean play" which includes not cheating. I grinned at some of the phrasing such as "Clean play increases and train's one's strength, and helps one to be more useful to one's country" and goes on to make a few recommendations about being a good loser or a generous winner and to treat opponents with politeness. It seems to me all children should hear all the information in this book.

Regarding social ills, the section on community includes a page encouraging the avoidance of being a drunkard and warns "alcoholism means death to the nation". I am not faulting the book but will mention that missing from the book due to the fact that such things were not discussed in the 1920s to 1960s are warnings against cigarette smoking, illegal drug use, other unhealthy acts such as sniffing glue, and sex issues and warnings of sexually transmitted diseases.

The section on our country contains information about voting, jury duty, how to write our legislators and politicians to voice our concerns, and recommending that we be happy to pay our taxes. The patriotism level here is high!

In response to the negative reviews which some claimed was due to non-inclusion of non-white people in the illustrations: I want to state here that this is false. Images of black Americans are rare but not totally (see pages 54, 100 and 103). People of other cultures are discussed on the "good citizenship in the world" section and show Asian people on pages 130, 131, and 136. However we should all note as described in the introduction, that this author was really an editor and the text and illustrations were taken from other sources dating back to the 1920s through the 1960s. The fact that the textbooks and government documents used primarily Caucasians in the illustrations should come as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with American history. Take this for what it is worth. This book was published in 2001 using old information. There is no reason to slight the author or the book for not writing in modern terms or addressing modern issues or showing people of all ethnicities.

          Book Description

In this panoramic guide by one of the world's most knowledgeable movie enthusiasts, Cyrus Ghani reviews more than six hundred and fifty of the big screen's finest offerings. An international lawyer and eminent historian, Ghani has lived on three continents and is fluent in several languages, affording him a uniquely broad perspective on cinema. His love affair with movies began, he says, at the age of eight and has lasted a lifetime. My Favorite Films is the result—the work of an avid fan, keenly insightful, highly informative, and happily free of the arcane terminology and analysis of academic film criticism. In these pages, Ghani moves from early silent classics like Buster Keaton's The General and Charlie Chaplin's City Lights to the films of Billy Wilder and John Huston, the Ealing Studios capers, famed Ernst Lubitsch romantic comedies, the countless, finely-crafted films by Max Ophuls, and recent hits like The Silence of the Lambs and L.A. Confidential—a journey of exploration that will excite and delight film aficionados and occasional viewers alike.

          1 out of 5 stars Piffle.......2004-10-24

The book sounded like a great idea. And, incidentally, it has glowing endorsements on the back cover from people of the caliber of John le Carre and Joe Morgenstern.

Unfortunately, I have the impression that the people who endorsed this book either never bothered to look into it or were doing a favor to the publisher. In either case, they should be ashamed of themselves.

The texts dealing with 650 of the author's favorite films are 80% plot synopses. In the age of the Internet and IMDb you hardly need to pay $30 to get that ($50 in hardcover). The short paragraphs dealing with "critical" appraisal are so inane I had some difficulty believeing that anyone would want to publish such piffle. I am going to provide samples or the author's insights:

The film deals with the incompetence of the commanders and their refusal to accept responsibility for their ill-advised actions and needless sacrifice of lives... It is Kirk Douglas' best acting. It is also one of Kubrick's finest films.

PERSONA is one of Bergman's most difficult films. One of his perennial themes is accentuated - the difficulty of meaningful communication between human beings... One of the best acted of Bergman's films, Ullmann handles a difficult role well and conveys everything with facial expressions and body movements. Bibi Andersson is also excellent.

This masterpiece is beautifully photographed with a poetic quality.

          The film is well acted.

The direction, as always, is very straightforward.

There is beautiful cinematography by *** and magnificent acting by ***.

Anthony Hopkins has never been better. He captures every nuance of a butler who devotes his life to his master... Emma Thompson does equal justice to her part. The rest of the cast, especially ***, *** and ***, are also very good.

It is an extremely well-made film with superb performances, imaginative use of color and well-researched script.

There is fine acting by the entire cast.

James Garner, a fine actor especially in light comedy roles, is very good.

Etc. Please bear in mind that these examples do not take things out of context. There IS no context, no development, no further insight. This, unfortunately, is IT. So if you want to know which particular cast members are "very good" in this film or that, then certainly go ahead and buy this book. Unless, of course, you are put off by generalizations like "the entire cast is excellent". No, here's another example I cannot resist, about STALAG 17:

Otto Preminger... gives a superb performance. Neville Brand... is first rate. STALAG 17 is also a very good comedy, and Sig Rumann, Harvey Lembeck and Robert Strauss are perfectly cast. William Holden, a distinctively American actor and one of the best of his generation, finally received his due in this role.

And this is the way the author covers his ground. I literally ransacked the book in an attempt to find one critical sentence that wouldn't be a platitude. So far I haven't managed it, but the book is over 700 pages, so I suppose there is still a faint chance I may stumble upon it some day.

I'd have given it zero stars if such option had been provided.

          5 out of 5 stars A Superb Book.......2004-07-29

My Favorite Films is an ode to the old writer's adage: write about what you know. The result is a book that is not only as good a reference guide as exists but a highly enjoyable and sophisticated journey that informs, stimulates and provokes. What makes the book truly unique, however, is that, on top of his encyclopedic knowledge, the author has a passion for his subject. It is that passion that all movie buffs-young and old alike-will find irresistible. It quite literally exudes from every line of this highly erudite but unpretentious review of the author's favorite six hundred and fifty films.

It is also a great book to just read and enjoy. Ghani's love of movies is palpable, and it's contagious. I also like the feel of the book itself, very European. Highly recommend for anyone who loves movies.

5 out of 5 stars Best Blackjack Tutorial in Print.......2007-05-30

I've read and re-read this book several times.
Revere's style is a bit aggressive, but it
apparently reflects the mental resolve necessary
                            to succeed at playing/counting blackjack.
He knows what he's talking about, and can show
you why and how to learn to play the game flawlessly.
Although most BJ books introduce you to basic strategy
and some sort of counting method, Revere shows you
                            what it takes to win.
Required reading for all students of the game.

If the reviews I read are accurate do not buy the republished version [Amazon should love this]; find an older one when it was published by Lyle Stuart. Then you have the benefit of the color charts. Be aware that the man who published under the name Lawrence Revere died of cancer in the late 1970s. But he did write the best tutorial ever on how to beat the twenty-one game by card counting. Revere was a fanatic who believed in study and practice. He first published in 1968, and didn't bother to copyright his writing till the following year. It was, I believe, John Luckman, former dealer at the Dunes and founder of the Gambler's Book Club, who urged him to protect his work. Careful reading of Revere's _Playing Blackjack as a Business_ and of Thorp's _Beat the Dealer_ (both the 1962 and 1966 editions) will teach more about the game than all the other writings combined. For anyone planning to make serious money at blackjack, it would be a mistake not to own and study these three books. The only worthwhile active contributor to blackjack literature writes under the name Stanford Wong. I recommend his software for generating decision tables. Other works I can recommend are the late Peter Griffin's _Theory of Blackjack_ and the late Ken Uston's _Million Dollar Blackjack_. And if you can find a copy (you almost certainly can't) read Dr. Alan Wilson's long out-of-print _Casino Gamblers Guide_ to learn the history of the game and the digital and empirical pioneers who first analysed it. All other writing on twenty-one is eyewash.

5 out of 5 stars best of the best.......2000-02-14

I found this book to be a wonderful challenge. It covers every possible hand to your strategic advantage, and proves the game can be won if you are willing to put in the work needed to learn and practice. This book is still a present day authority on how to beat the game! My soft cover is in color! My condolences to the last reviewer. I have read many books and this is one of the best, no doubt.

1 out of 5 stars The Charts Are Not in Color!.......1999-07-22

In the section titled "A Word on the Construction and Format of this Book" the first sentence reads as follows:

"This book contains 70 charts, 36 of which are in color."

Well, none of the charts in the book are in color. A big disappointment giving the high price of the book.

1 out of 5 stars The strategy charts are of poor qulity........1999-07-08

When I discovered that a "hard cover" version of Playing Blackjack as a Business was going to be published in September of 1999, I rushed to place my order right away. Never mind that its list price was $ 27.95 plus the usual shipping and handling. Normally, I wouldn't pay attention to such trivial matters, but today I'm fuming and disappointed!

Don't get me wrong! The magic of Lawrence Revere is there still; I don't believe that will ever change. Nor there is anything wrong with the hard of the book is its strategy charts. And that's what got me boiling over. I can't believe it that Replica Books did such a bad job in reproducing them. Their wretched look is an instant turn off, and again that's perhaps the most important part of the book, the meat if I may!

It appears that color charts meant to be reproduced in color were reproduced in black and white. Normally, black and white designs reproduced in black and white come out in good quality. Not so, color designs reproduced in black and white, alas, this book in question.

The quality of the charts is so bad that I decided to return the book for a full refund. Amazon will even refund the postage so that it would be like if I never ordered the book, as one of her courteous representatives has assured me.

For my own consolation, though, I will order the soft cover version to replace my copy that after so many years of giving me the joy in the art of playing blackjack is beginning to fall apart. I know that version has better quality charts in full color

Number Properties (1 of the 7 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this quantitative content area. Students are presented with a comprehensive analysis of the properties and rules of integers tested on the GMAT--everything from prime products to perfect squares.

The book offers a unique balance between two competing emphases: test-taking strategies and in-depth content understanding. Practice problem-sets build specific foundational skills in each topic and include the most advanced content that many other prep books ignore. As the average GMAT score required to gain admission to top b-schools continues to rise, this guide provides test takers with the depth and volume of advanced material essential for succeeding on the GMAT's computer adaptive format. Book also includes online access to 3 full-length Simulated Practice GMAT Exams at Manhattan GMAT's website.

4 out of 5 stars Very good for the target audience.......2007-09-18

"Very good for the target audience" - I think this sums it all. If you are someone who has not done active maths for some time now, and therefore does not remember the concepts involved very well, this is the book for you. This I will say holds true for most of the books of the Manhattan Quant series.
The Manhattan Quant series books cover the concepts only to the degree that gets asked in the GMAT, and do not overwhelm you.
Plus, as each of the Manhattan books then turns to the Official Guide for practice, each of the books has a section where the appropriate questions for that topic are numbered from the OG. They also detail the toughest of the lot from OG. Here I think the book is useful for anyone, irrespective of the personal comfort level with maths.
Therefore if you are true to yourself and practice the questions marked from OG as you go along, this would prove to an excellent resource for cracking the quant part of the GMAT.
