Book Description

The candy became an obsession between two outcasts—one who
only wanted to fit in, the other who knew she never would.
Urban legends, rumors, lies, myths, mysteries, fairy tales. Stories,
in all their magical forms, bound them together.
"Satin Chocolate–Covered–Chicken Bones," "Astro Pop," "Fun
Dip," "Thrills." The candy stories—outrageous, twisted, hysterical—
were an escape from a harsh reality and revealed a startling truth.

Darkly lyrical, sensual, suspenseful, and disturbing, The Candy
Darlings is a celebration of friendship, story, and the power of each
to help you define yourself—or simply survive.

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book with lyrical prose and a unique construction.......2007-01-05

Imagine being part of the popular crowd one day and an outcast the next. Imagine meeting a girl who eats nothing but candy. Imagine that girl, Megan Chalmers, becomes your new friend because you're both outcasts.

These are all components to Christine Walde's first novel, THE CANDY DARLINGS. A girl and her father move after her mother dies, and she begins attending a private school, where Meredith, Angela and Laura (MAL) rule the class. Megan is also new, and she immediately latches on to the new girl as someone who can see through MAL's façade to the meanness inside (hence the acronym Megan comes up with --- MAL, a prefix meaning "evil").

Megan and the main character (who remains nameless) forge an interesting friendship. Megan eats candy constantly, always urging her new friend (who is then given the nickname "Dead Girl" by MAL) to have some as well. But Dead Girl won't; she vowed not to when her mother died. Megan also tells candy stories, both to entertain and to answer the questions about her life that she won't respond to straight out. They're bizarre stories, and Dead Girl isn't sure what to make of them.

Eventually, MAL gets meaner, Blake Starfield (the weird boy in class) becomes crazier and Megan begins to disappear for days at a time. The main character's father just won't understand, and she starts eating candy again as a means of coping.

Christine Walde mixes fantasy with realism using Megan's stories, and even the reader can't be entirely sure which parts are true and which aren't. She makes up a fairy tale for an older character in the hospital to read to the girls and adds just a bit of romance without contriving things.

Those prepared to handle some of the big issues that arise will enjoy the book for its fresh take on teen literature. This is not just another Gossip Girl wannabe, and even calling it "Mean Girls" on paper isn't doing the lyrical prose and unique construction enough justice. THE CANDY DARLINGS is definitely worth a look.

What the new girl wanted was to start over, find a completely new identity. Now that she and her dad had moved, she was able to do just that. She had it all mapped out--start the new school year at a new school, make some new friends and become part of the "in" crowd. Then all chances of being popular were ruined when Megan Chalmers entered the scene, with her weird self, eating candy all the time.

But now the girls befriend each other, united by one bond--candy. One who absolute despises it when she discovers the effects, while the other loves it to death. Well, that and the evil forces of MAL--Meredith, Angela, and Laura, the girls who rule the school and whose targets are the two girls.

All the new girl, now dubbed Dead Girl by MAL, and Megan Chalmers need to do is get back at MAL and eat candy, the only thing that will help Dead Girl hide the pain. But it isn't simple when MAL gets meaner by the minute and no one is able to help them. It's all up to the two girls to stand up for themselves, but is it possible?

At first glance THE CANDY DARLINGS seems to be like any other "Mean Girls" story, but once the reader delves deeper into the novel, they discover a completely different universe. Christine Walde interweaves candy stories along with her main storyline to create a novel that is hard to divide into what is the real world that the girls live in and what is just the fantasy world that Megan creates. A unique novel that makes for an interesting read.

With lips red as blood (thanks to Revlon)and hair as white as the clouds, Little Jimmy from Long Island knew he was a very pretty and special boy, from the time he was little.

Fawning over glamour mags and film rags he adopted a very andrgynous quailty about him and eventually thanks to Cher's pioneering efforts, was transformed into a woman, and and undeground film legend. " Shouldres back, head held high...you aren't just a star..you're a superstar!" she would coo to her comrades Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis as they sweated their demi god poses at Max's Kansas City before and after the gay rights movement (Stonewall).

With a breathy voice, you can almost hear her rambling on about all things important to her as she shares them in this little book of hopes, dreams, and stories. Too bad she never sat down and wrote a book before she passed away, she gave a great gift to the transgender community. She helped open the door for them within Hollywood cinema.

Though this book will only be understood and appreciated by Die Hard Warhol fanatics, it is also a mildly valuable piece for gender studies, at a minor level

84 pages. After Dark was an entertainment magazine that covered theatre, cinema, stage plays, ballet, performance art, and various artists, including singers, actors and actresses, and dancers, among others. One of the great things about the publication, at least today, is the almost "time capsule" like richness of advertising, photos, and the many great names who are not here today. On the cover: What does an editor do when a flood of stunning photographs passes over his desk daily? - Candy Darling - editor's out-takes; The Mercer Center - New York's newest hotbed of culture; Evening Out the Odd Couple - Tony Randall; Beneath the Sheets of Morning - Jack Blackton in Hark; Greta Keeler - Giving Meaning to the Words; much more.

Self-invention, or rather, reinvention is at the heart of much gay culture. Being told that you should not be who you are encourages you to become someone else. But few gay men have self-invented with the panache and grandiloquence of James Lawrence Slatterly, who metamorphosed into the fabulous Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling. Taking his/her cues from Lana Turner, Kim Novak, and Gloria Graham, Candy Darling became a walking testament to Hollywood womanhood. Although she appeared in several Warhol films before her early death in 1974, Candy Darling didn't need theatrical vehicles: she lived her life as a star. My Face for the World to See is a collection of her diaries, drawings, and thoughts. While there is nothing profound, the book is a moving record of a life and imagination that illuminated the cultural landscape and burned brightly and too short.

A great book - beautifully realized project on the diaries of Candy Darling, Warhol Superstar, famously immortalized by Peter Hujar in an image which was later used by the sublimely talented Antony Hegarty for the cover of his bands' (Antony and The Johnsons)CD; "I am a bird now" .

This book is a touching read and insight into Candy's mind.

3 out of 5 stars "I can get very Joan Crawford about the whole thing.".......2005-06-20

Candy Darling was born James Lawrence Slattery in November 1944, and then re-emerged as Candy Darling some years later. During Candy's short exotic life, she gained fame as one of the stars from Andy Warhol's Factory. She starred in a number of films, including "Flesh" and "Women in Revolt" but died of Leukemia before the age of 30. The book "My Face for the World to See: The Diaries, Letters and Drawings of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar" is a collection of Candy's writing--and the content ranges from recipes, quotes, make up tips, lists, journal entries, and letters. The letters contain the essence of Candy's image: "I have always been a goddess above it all untouchable." And through many of Candy's statements, a glimpse of a certain unhappiness and loneliness can be seen. I loved Holly Woodlawn's memoir "A Low Life in High Heels", and I'd hoped that the book would yield a similar experience. Unfortunately the content here is a little thin. A few photographs and photographs accompany the text. What a shame that Candy Darling didn't leave a fabulous memoir for her fans--displacedhuman

    3 out of 5 stars great package.......2003-06-01

I was so impressed just by Darling's little pink-diary-with-a-lock-and-key packaging that, in itself, it may be enough to buy the book just to enhance the look of your bookshelf. Otherwise....Not much inside. Most memorable is a photocopy of a diary page of Darling describing what it's like to have once been known and then forgotten...or worse. The book has pages that make you regret you must hesitate for a moment before flipping to the next.

3 out of 5 stars Kiss them for me...I may be Delayed.......2000-09-09

" It Glittered and it gleamed, for the arriving beauty queen" The words once sang by Siouxsie Sioux, describes the spiritual search for the ghost of Jane Mansfield. I guess the words itself in the title could have been uttered by Candy as she applied her favourite colour of lipstick by Revlon...Fire and Ice. While not an autobiography by any means, these are her words plain and simple. Little Jimmy from Long Island, grew up to be one of the Warhol "Girlettes" as she tried to emulate her favourite star, Lana Turner. The book is filled with basic odds and ends from little journals and scrap pieces of paper thrown together to cash in on the success of " I Shot Andy Warhol ". She considered herself a great actress and wanted forever to get the flaw between her legs taken off, but instead from illegal hormones died of cancer. Sadly, this is basically the only book out there that is a companion piece to " A Low Life in High Heels " By Holly Woodlawn, he fellow transgendered actor friend, rival, and sometimes, an enemy. Don't look for any special secrets (other than what it is a woman should where when going out, and a horrid recipe for a salad, ) about her life or anything, but random bitchy words and poems from someone who is lost to us forever except for two films and a photos taken by some of the best fashion photographers.

5 out of 5 stars Somebody I always wanted to know more about.........1999-04-27

I've been interested in Candy ever since I saw her in "I Shot Andy Warhol" (played by Steven Dorff) I decided to buy this book because I have an interest in all things related to Andy, the Factory, and the entourage. It's very interesting- the entries are Candy's own handwriting, some of them go back to when she was in middle school. There are even pictures she drew herself. There are some nice photos too- even one in the front of her and Andy. Candy's writing is also very heartfelt- you can tell she desperately wanted to be something she wasn't. My favorite passage in the whole book is "You must be true to yourself no matter what the cost, it is the highest form of morality." My only complaint is that it should have gotten under the surface and told more about her life. But overall, I think Mr. Newton did a wonderful job. You feel like you get to know Candy throught this book, it even looks like it could have been her diary- it has a lock and key and everything. It's a good book for those who are interested in Candy, or things that went on in the Factory.

Snaps 4 is the latest in the snaps craze, a phenomenon that has sold over 300,000 copies of Snaps, Double Snaps, and Triple Snaps combined. Rooted in a tradition dating back to slavery and with its pulse on today's African-American comedy explosion, snapping is a ritualized form of comic insult that affirms the power of wits over fists. Bursting with snaps from celebrities such as Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, as well as insults from snapping fans nationwide, Snaps 4 is loaded with more than five hundred all-new, never-before-hurled hard-core disses.

        Book Description

Published for the first time in English in 1994 as Burning Passions, Cherchi Usai's groundbreaking guide to silent film studies has become the indispensable textbook for scholars, researchers, and archivists. This much-awaited sequel to the first edition has been extensively rewritten and updated in order to reflect the spectacular development witnessed by the discipline in the past few years. In addition, two new chapters have been added for this edition. The first is an extensive analysis of color technology and aesthetics, from hand-coloring to the dawn of Technicolor. The second is a detailed account of how silent films are saved from destruction, restored, and made accessible by film archives. A number of new illustrations, tables, bibliographical references and historical sources add additional value to this fundamental survey of the first thirty years in the history of the moving image.

If you have ever wondered what a film archivist does, this book is for you. If you are really serious about your passion for silent films, this book is for you. Mr Usai's concise book is packed full of research tips. There are over 50 illustrations, many in color, of all kinds of different early film frames (70mm, 35mm, 9.5mm, 28mm) plus early color processes, even early 3-D frames. He explains how the early color processes worked and how early films were assembled. He goes into great detail on how that silent film that you may watch today may be drastically altered from the original in the early 1900s. And he explains the many frustrating problems that silent film archivists encounter. He explains the pitfalls of compiling filmographies, and how some printed sources are valuable and others are worthless. If you are just becoming interested in silent films, this book will be too much for you. But if you are really interested in the "nuts and bolts" of archive work, or the detective work that we do to study silent cinema, then you won't be able to put this book down!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for silent film and film preservation issues.......2004-12-07

This is a very good book about the technology and issues surrounding silent movies. It is not a history of Hollywood and is not going to have descriptions of movies or pictures of silent film stars.

Usai begins with discussion of how silent movies would have been presented when they were first released. I had been big into silent movies and had seen around 90 of them before reading this and I learned some interesting facts here. He describes film speed issues. In the 20's and earlier film speed had not been standardized. So when a modern distributor does not account for this disparity the print they make may play too fast for a comical and distracting "fast forward" effect. Sound actually was a big part of "silent" movies. Soundtracks in the form of music matched to action were common. Color tinting was common in movies throughout the 20's but because color film does not age as well, the versions we have now are black and white. Usai goes into each of these issues in detail. Seeing and understanding the examples he lays out helps very much in understanding why silent film is represented in certain ways today. Reading this has helped me to identifying good restorations of silent film and to separate the quality of the movie from the quality of that particular release.

The title, Burning Passions, refers to the film stock and chemical processes at work that make the film decay even in an airtight vault. One distressing issue is that most film is beyond repair and restoration after about 80 years. Usai estimates a 100 year max, but that max depends on many many storage "ifs". Storage concerns are addressed, including the extreme flammability of silver nitrate film stock (it produces oxygen as it burn and so will continue to burn under water). Issues surrounding preservation issues are discussed, including the extent to which a warped or scratched film can be repaired. Usai also connects back to the economics of film preservation. Money is only going to be available if there is commercial demand for these films. Hence the earlier section about film presentation and the quality of a restoration. Discussion of issues surrounding film preservation and storage are well written and easy to read even though they deal with chemistry and more dry subject matter. (One omission in Usai's book is discussion of how copyright restrictions impede preservation. The 1998 Sony Bono Copyright Term Extension Act set copyright at a minimum of 90 years - longer than the lifespan of film stock, and is retroactive to include works created after 1926. An excellent discussion of this issue, which emerged after Usai's book was released in 1995, can be found in Free Culture by Lessig.)

If you are interested in film preservation or are into silent film then this is a must read book. Usai writes in clear and accessible language and the book is very readable. University libraries should make a copy available for researchers and the curious to access.

This book is indispensable to the collector who wishes to travel to the archives around the world to view rare films not on video. Highly recommended, informative, and interesting.

              Book Description

Twenty Nights to Rock. . . Touring with The Boss is an account of what it is like to follow Bruce Springstein on tour. Author Bill Tangen and his wife Christine went to twenty concerts across the United States and in London, England during "The Rising" tour in late 2002 and 2003. Sometime between the second and third concert they attended, Bill wanted to put the excitement of the tour down on paper and let others witness what it is like to see and hear "The Boss" from a fan's perspective. In this book, see what it is that Bruce Springstein possesses to bring generations of loyal fans together to celebrate his music.

5 out of 5 stars Felt Like I Was There.......2005-09-11

Just finished reading Twenty Nights To Rock, This book is written in a very different way. Instead of being just about Bruce, Bill takes you on this tour from the fans appreciation and love for Bruce. Bill has gone to great length, discribing each of the concerts he attended on the tour. Talks of the settings, the songs, the attitude of not just the preformer, but of the fans present. While reading, many times, I felt as if I were there with the author as he viewed the crowd, the different personalities, the whole scene. If one wants to know how it feels to be a fan, all they have to do is read the wonderful accounting that Bill has written. Myself, I have never been to a Bruce concert, but you can bet I will some day, and I am sure as I look around at the people I will recall much of Bills' writing.
Thank-you Bill, for your time and effort, and for giving me such a great insight to Bruces' works.

                4 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......1999-07-13

The Shell Scott series are great fun. I've been thinking about them recently (I read a BUNCH of them in past years) and decided to try to find a source. Every one of the Shell Scott books I've read over the years was truly enjoyable, light, fast, humorous, & hard hitting. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable hard-boiled, detective novel........1999-06-08

My father always enjoyed reading the novels in this detective series which were very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. So, I decided to read some as well. But, they seem to be hard to come across. I believe that this novel was the last that the author wrote. All of the books in this series are centered about a private detective named Shell Scott, an ex-marine with a bleached-blond crewcut. The first book in the series (there were more than forty) was published in 1950: "The Case of the Vanishing Beauty". "Shellshock" begins when Scott is asked by a friend of his, an attorney in Arizona, to take on an unusual assignment. The attorney's client has to find a daughter that he had abandoned years earlier. And Scott has to do it without knowing the daughter's full name, without using the client's name, and do it discretely in only a few days. In addition, because of the client's former criminal past and current associates, there are men attempting to stop Scott from completeing his task. Interestingly, it is mentioned in the novel that Scott is thirty years old in this novel. That would mean that, when Scott had his first published case in 1950, he hadn't even been born yet! Of course, we readers probably shouldn't read that much into these serials. The Shell Scott stories are probably required reading for serious students of the sub-genre of hard-boiled, private eye novels.

5 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend this book for all detective fans.......1997-06-21

This was the first book I read by Richard Prather, I was instantly hooked. I now own 15 of his books, most of which I had to buy used. I strongly recommend this book for anyone with a passing interest in detective fiction. Since Shell Scott and I have the same taste in women, I find the books so easy to read I just can't put them down until I'm done. If you haven't read anything by Richard Prather, This would be a great first book to read, as it is very well written.

                            5 out of 5 stars It's called: FOR DUMMIES..........2006-04-24

I'm surprised by the poor reviews this book has received. Honestly.

The book is a FOR DUMMIES book -- meaning you probably don't know much about the subject and are most likely looking for a basic overview, not in-depth information with case studies, etc. Yikes!

This is a great book for someone new to HR, like myself. It covers a little of everything which makes it easy to at least identify the topics/lingo. There are also references in the book, so you can go out and find the in-depth coverage you want.

If you're looking for a book to tell you exactly how to run an entire HR dept., look elsewhere. This book isn't called "Everything Under The Sun about HR" Its a for dummies book, a great starter book.

I just recently took a SHRM class, a basic all-around new-to-HR class, and found that the For Dummies book covered 80% of the info I learned in the class and textbook (and even more).

Bottom line: if you're new to HR and want to start learning, this book is a GREAT place to start, truly. If you're already an HR professional, you'd probably do better with more specific books on the topics you're looking for.

Do not read this book unless you have never even heard of the Human Resources profession. The book covered such basic concepts that anyone with a little common sense could have figured out on their own. I wanted to learn more about the laws that govern H.R., recruiting and sucession planning. There was a simple introduction to a few of the laws that affect H.R. policies, but nothing in depth. The section on recruiting was extremely basic and succesion planning was not even mentioned. I have only been in the H.R. business for one year and this book didn't cover anything I didn't alreaady know.

This is a good source of information for both professionals and new students of HR management. Content:The author has done a descent job collecting useful informations and also adressing a number of key issues in the field of HR management.Non-the-less he often fails to provide an in-depth analysis that the discipline deserves.Indeed, imprtant topics such as,HR Forcasting on P.65,is dealt with as if it is a legal briefing than an in-depth analysis that such crucial subject requires.

Organization:Perhaps, the weakest part of this book is its poor organization; It lacks cohesiveness. In fact, it is organized so poorly that the reader notices almost instantly. Conclusion: It could be a solid book if re-orgonized/revised, added more in-depth analysis, and avoid unnecessary repeatitions that appper and re-appear throughout the book.Still, a good source for new students and new employees of the HR management.
