If you are a true idiot-- buy this book.......2006-04-22

Obviously one can't fault a book for catering to idiots when their title actually claims to be for "Complete Idiots" however....I was under the impression that the title was simply a marketing gimmick designed to insinuate that this book covers all the aspects of the subject. Well, I was wrong.

If you are truly a "complete idiot" and have never seen or used a camera before, then possibly this book is for you. And if that's the case, I doubt you're reading a book on the subject. But if you want a book that is up to date, addresses some of the more interesting and needed questions about photography (including more than one page on lighting) and read beyond the 2nd grade level, then I would suggest another source. This book also seems to have been directed at a 1980's consumer. There is little discussion of digital cameras and 80% of the book is focused on traditional SLR's-- and if you have a traditional SLR you're a professional photographer (one would hope) and that means it's unlikely that you're buying a book called THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY. THis book is currently gathering dust on my bookshelk while I scour the internet for relevant info about this subject. Too bad.

Awesome Informative Book.......2004-08-05

I got this book as a gift for Christmas. I think this book has all you need to know about film and the type of camera you might want to buy. It also helps you understand lighting, film, and creative things to do with photography! It also gives you things to watch out for so you don't make a mistake. I constently go back to it for ideas and I'm finding more helpful things everytime I open it. I think it's an excellent book for beginner photographers.

Photography Like a Pro - brief synopsis.......2003-03-08

This book is a more-or-less well written manual; however, I must admit that a lot of the information in this book is not very well presented, and often confusing (especially if this is a first time that you are encountering the subject). More detail should have been given to differences in aparture settings, and examples were lacking. Depth-of-Field was poorly explained, and while this book starts out with something as simple as a single-use camera, about 50% into it, explanations are assuming that you are very familiar with the concepts before reading this book. I must say that if I were a true beginner, I would not benefit from this book very much at all. I am not sure if there ever will be a book that will have a smooth transition from basics to advanced techniques, and will include many examples, but this book fails completely.

I think Mike Stensvold really knows his stuff, and is really up on all things photographic. His humor is engaging and helps me learn more effectively and efficiently. I hope he'll write more books like this, as I aspire to one day be a great writer and photographer like him!

A great book!.......2000-06-16

This book is amazing. It covers everything from using disposable cameras at wedding receptions to having fun with filters and lenses. The pictures help explain a lot of the ideas the author is presenting, too. It's not all a piece of cake, and the author doesn't assume you are an idiot. Luckily, he's an excellent teacher. Like he writes in the book, use what you find helpful, and skip whatever doesn't interest you or what is beyond what you're willing to learn. I have already been trying out some of his tips for animal and outdoor shots--the pix turned out great!--and can't wait to try more advanced tips.

The Ugaritic ritual texts provide the only extensive documentary data for Late Bronze cultic practice in the greater Syro-Palestinian region. These texts, in a West-Semitic language that belongs to the same family as Hebrew and Aramaic, reflect the actual practice of a sacrificial cult in the city of Ugarit in the late twelfth-early eleventh centuries B.C.E. Based on new collations of the tablets, these texts and translations provide ready access to this direct witness to the form taken by one of the predecessors of the biblical sacrificial cult. In addition to the narrowly ritual texts, which were composed in prose and in a very laconic form of expression, a number of poetic texts are presented that reveal the ideological link that existed between cultic practice and the concept of royalty. While the prose ritual texts document a regular system of offerings to the great deities of the pantheon, related directly to the lunar cycle and less directly to the solar year, some of the poetic texts reveal the desire on the part of the kings of Ugarit to maintain ties with their departed ancestors. The kings saw their effective power as consisting of a continuum from the royal ancestors through to the reigning king and the passage of this power as being effected by ritual practice. More mundane concerns were also addressed ritually, such as protecting horses or other equids from snakebite, finding a cure for a sick child, or defending people from attack by sorcerers. The practice of divination at Ugarit is documented by other texts, both in the form of "manuals," collections of collections of omens from past practice, and in the form of accounts of real-world consultations with a divinatory priest by someone seeking guidance.

Sheer Genius, the People's Poet Cartoonist Laureate.......2006-06-02

I start every day with the Tom Toles cartoon in the Washington Post, and consider him to be the Nation's poet cartoonist laureate. I've taken to buying his books as well, for cheer, for reflection, as gifts, and as a collector's item.

The publisher has done this book a real dis-service by not using Amazon's "about the book" information upload capabilities. The table of contents, for example, not provided by the publisher, is provided here to demonstrate that this is a "serious" cartoon book that is both hysterically funny, and poignantly pointed at REALITY. The contents, as organized by the author:

This is, quite simply, a sensational book. Tom Toles for President! (I smile--he's too good a man for the job, unless we change the way we elect Presidents).

Consider also Googling for his web site and sharing his daily cartoons with others--Tom Toles is as close as we get in America to the Solidarity movement and samizdat freedom thinkers that broke the back of communism--now we need to break the back of ideological extremism and predatory capitalism, and that can start with the sharing of Tom Tole's great work.

Bought this book with high expectations but was disappointed. Most of the work is technically well-executed. But the subject matter is common to a seasoned traveler and the compositions are obvious. You will be impressed only if you have not seen or done much travel photography. Not worth forty bucks but consider buying a used copy.

I bought Fred's stunning photograph collection - Humanitas over 3 months ago and placed it on my desk at the office for myself and others to enjoy. This has been good and bad - good because i love to share and discuss these breathtaking photographs with everyone, but bad because everyone wants my copy for themselves. I am definitely stocking up on Humantas for Christmas. This book will inspire you to travel and connect with the world for yourself. An all-comprehending eye............2005-09-30

HUMANITAS does what few books of any kind, photography or otherwise, can do. It combines art of the highest quality with humanitarian spirit of the most generous kind. The photographs of Asian people as they go about their lives, selling water, herding camels to market, are stunning works of art, and at the same time they illuminate the deepest corners of those lives, both the quiet corners that don't often have witnesses, like prayer, and the more public, demonstrative ones--marketplaces or classrooms. They capture the essence of these moments with brilliance. They also draw the viewer to look closely at the subjects and their doings, to get to know them better, to see beneath the surface, whether they are shadows and silhouettes in a landscape, or hands in a courtyard circle or a woman with a kettle against an intensely blue wall. There is an all-seeing and all-comprehending eye behind the photos, aesthetically, anthropologically, and in all ways human. The title, HUMANITAS, expresses the spirit of the book.

Fredric Roberts uses color and composition consciously and exquisitely, fashioning his shots with visual and sensuous artistry, to create dazzling portraits and tableaus. Great Quality Accompaniment and Wonderful Value.......2005-05-23

Face it. It's difficult to find a quality recording to accompany your solos. This Book and CD set does a wonderful job. The 'score' is, quite simply, the clarinet part, although I at first thought it would be the full orchestra parts. You may change the tempo using a variable-speed CD player(or Windows Media Player), as is suggested in the accompanying documentation. The soloist on the example tracks is quite good, and the orchestra accompaniment is excellent. Make sure you have a CD player you can hear over your playing, however.

Overall, this product is a great buy. For contest preparation, where you play with a piano part, however, I would recommend the Contest Solos Series from Music Minus One. The first movement can be found in "Advanced Clarinet Solos, vol. II", the second in "Intermediate Clarinet Solos, vol. III", and the third in "Advanced Clarinet Solos, vol. I".

Advanced Music Appreciation, but worth the effort.......2001-11-06

Mozart's K. 622 is certainly one of his greatest concerti. If you have listened to this work several times, or simply want a better understanding, Lawson's book is ideal. Although I am not a clarinetist, this book has profoundly shaped my listening and appreciation of this masterpiece.

True to this Cambridge series, the concerto is put into its historical context. Did you know that the clarinet used in the late 1700s was toned differently than today's? Did you know there is no cadenza?

The chapter on design and structure is arguably the best set of program notes on the piece. The descriptions are nearly bar-by-bar, so you will need to have a score handy. For example, the development section of the first movement (Allegro) changes tonality from E major to F# minor to D major to B minor to F# minor in about 20 bars. Where the book does justice is to show parrallels both within movements as well as between movements.
Indeed, there are even references to other Mozart works, especially to the esteeemd Clarinet Quintet and even clarinet portrayls in Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte. Ideally, this book would have been more accessible through an interactive CD-ROM with links to those themes. This then is the reason to get the book--the rich context, both musically and historically, in which this piece is put. In other words, a careful reading of Chapter 6, with a recording and the score, and my finger on the pause button, have given me increased insight into not only this piece, but several other Mozart conerti and arias.

Please note that the book is scholarly and I have onl described a single chapter. For most other books, I would not consider the purchase of a book for a single chapter a good value. Hoewver, bearing in mind that Mozart's Clarinet Conerto is THE definitive clarinet concerto and a piece no Mozart lover should be without, it is a worthwhile investment. To the first time listener, the last movement, with its rapid changes in tessitura, rich textures, and addictive melodies will offer the listener bubbling satisfaction. By reading the book, it will offer increased insight into this masterpeice of this genius.

Mozart Clarinet Concerto.......2001-02-05

An excellant book for the clarinet player and Mozart enthusiast. It provides clear concise information regarding the conception of the concerto as well as the various people who helped shape the piece. Included is a comparision of the concerto today and the original version and how it has been modified in the 200+ years of it's existance due to the changes made to the clarinet, etc. A must have piece of literature, as a clarinet player and advancing musician, I highly reccommend it.

"The Grove Dictionary of Jazz" says this piece, which is not, in fact, a concerto, rather a big band arrangement (with strings) featuring clarinet, its title inspired possibly by Ellington's "Concerto for Cootie", shows, more than any other, the range of Artie Shaw's clarinet style, which is not to say it is his best recording. It is featured toward the end of the movie "Second Chorus", starring Fred Astaire, Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, and Artie Shaw (playing himself). It is available on certain Artie Shaw compilation discs.

This "book", however, is not, in fact, a score, but an abridged clarinet solo with simplified piano accompaniment and "orchestral" cues. The trumpet and piano solos are missing, but, so far as I can tell, the clarinet transcription (in concert key in the piano part, transposed in the clarinet part) is accurate. The pages are flimsy, and there is no cardboard cover, just a title sheet of the same flimsy paper. My copy arrived crimped at the corner.
