      Book Description

"Until recently, business historians have not yielded to beauty - at least as a subject of scholarly inquiry. But beauty is big business." -- Kathy Peiss, from the Introduction

Beauty seems simple; we know it when we see it. But of course our ideas about what is attractive are influenced by a broad range of social and economic factors, and in Beauty and Business leading historians set out to provide this important cultural context. How have retailers shaped popular consciousness about beauty? And how, in turn, have cultural assumptions influenced the commodification of beauty? The contributors here look to particular examples in order to address these questions, turning their attention to topics ranging from the social role of the African American hair salon, the sexual dynamics of bathing suits and shirtcollars, and the deeper meanings of corsets, to what the Avon lady tells us about changing American values. As a whole, these essays force us to reckon with the ways that beauty has been made, bought, and sold in modern America.

      Book Description

The Traitor's Manual is the first supplement for Paranoia, perhaps the most unique roleplaying game ever produced. Filled with the same black and ironic humour, The Traitor's Manual will reveal a host of new secret societies, guiding players on how to subvert the power of the computer. It will also teach players how to turn in their friends and fellow players, making it the ultimate guide to getting ahead in the weird world that is Paranoia. Acclaimed publisher Mongoose has brought Paranoia back for a new generation, focussing on a surreal, twisted vision of the future where players are positively encouraged to betray each other merely to survive. There has never been a roleplaying game like it! With a full supporting programme of future products already in development, Paranoia is destined to once more provide roleplayers with the sort of frantic gaming experience that proved so popular at the game's inception.

5 out of 5 stars Best supplement out to date for Paranoia XP..........2006-06-01

And the kicker of being the most treasonous as well.

Simply put, this book outlines every secret society for Paranoia XP, each one is given 3-5 pages.

Besides those pearls, there's a complete adventure in the back and a section on why and how the Secret Societies exist. Now that the corebooks have gone through the entire color spectrum once, I can safely say that if you have the core book and don't have any supplements yet, your best bet is to get either this for explanation on Secret Societies, or Flashbacks for some great adventures in all their hardbound glory.

      5 out of 5 stars Alaskan Humor.......2007-04-03

This book will be a humorous introduction to the culture of Alaskans. Subtitled "A Guide to Good Manners and Social Survival in Alaska" Good manners there were never written by Emily Post or Miss Manners! If you have been there, you will be ready to go back!

5 out of 5 stars Warning! Not a real guide!.......2004-03-20

When my wife and I first moved to Alaska in 1987 we wanted to find out what Alaskans were like so we could try to fit in. We looked around and found Mike Doogan's guide - plus all of his weekly articles giving advice on how to live like a real Alaskan. (The other guide we found was Jeff Lowenfells.) I took Mike's advice seriously! Now 16 years later I had a chance to listen to Mike in person and he said his newspaper column was a humor column! So now I have all this stuff in my driveway - so my house will look like a real Alaskan home - and what am I going to do with it all? So beware! Reading this book is not for those who want real advice. It is instead a book joking about some things some Alaskans do, but not how you should really try to live just to fit in. But if anyone reading this would like to buy some stuff for your driveway - please give me a call!

5 out of 5 stars Best information on how folks REALLY live in rural Alaska.......1997-12-30

If you have ever gotten the chance to meet or visit with the folks from rural Alaska you will know these are facts of live. Told in a very humorous way. Good reading you can't put down. Great for folks that may never get there but want to know the facts of Alaska life!

3 out of 5 stars OK if you used Maya before.......2005-05-21

I bought this book and went through most of the chapters. It does cover Maya in great details and takes you through the nitty-gritty steps filling you with every information you need and you do not need. If your idea is to get to use Maya quickly without needing to know about intricate details of the sotware, then look elsewhere. I am a beginner and I can tell that it is not user-friendly. You basically need instructions in the line of "learn maya in 3 hours"style!

2 out of 5 stars Is there a support group for this book?!.......2004-01-11

I am a senior Computer Science Major, so computer systems aren't totally alien to me. This book personally is driving me nuts! Never having used Maya before, I have learned a lot! BUT!!!

      - It is a trial of patience for a new user to go through so much content before actually having a use for it (i.e. how to customize the menu's according to your style [for more experienced users that actually have some]). Expect to read a lot and do very little at the beginning.

      - I really don't think these books were ever tried out on the target market(s) before hitting the press. If you make a mistake, you'll probably just have to start all over again, or try reverting to some previously saved files. They don't warn of common pit falls. I have only been able to get about 2/3 of the tutorials done.

      - Even if you get the tutorials done there can be extreme frustrations. For instance you make this aftershave bottle (took forever to attach the curve's, and I never knew why it finally worked the last time), and then you look at the picture the authors put together... their picture is beautiful, but hell if I know how to make mine look like that. Spent about 2 hours just trying to make glass look like glass. The Maya file is not on the CD, just the picture! Very few of the nice pictures that show you how it can look are actually on the CD so that you can figure out why it looks that way. Same for the M tutorial in chpt 16, and all the texturing examples in chpt 17! I would go on, but you should understand by now- You're on your own cowboy.

      - Yeah that stupid head in chapter 5 would drive a buddist monk to slamming his mouse on the desk. There is about 2.25 pages of text telling you how to make this head... I'm still trying to figure out why I it won't let me select certain Control Vertices.

      - The biggest thing is when I went to the users community at Alias and they told me to just buy a new book and then ask questions! They knew of this book, they have been dealing with these poor people banging out frustrations and questions based upon this book.

In summary, you can learn from this book, but it comes at a cost.

      1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2003-11-23

I checked this book out at the store to see if it had much-needed tutorial updates. I have been going through Mastering Maya 3.0 for a while, and I had thought it was an acceptable book until I got to the bit about modeling a Nurbs head. Who were they writing this book for? Other Maya book authors? The way they present information in this book is to start off with kindergarten basics, and then expect you to instantaneously go from that to advanced neurosurgery at the end of the chapter. "Here are some blocks with different letters of the alphabet on them. Now write a novel about Man's philosophical struggle with life and the world around him, but through the eyes of a parrot that exists in the mind of a catatonic schizophrenic who has been frozen in a prostrated position for ten years."

The above complaint relates to this book because this book offers no improvement over its predecessor. The tutorials are only helpful if you can do what they suggest already, in which case you're better off drinking tea and relaxing instead of bothering with this book.

To sum up- I have a hard time understanding who they thought would benefit from Maya 4.5 Savvy. The truly savvy will skip it. Perhaps it will come in handy as crude toilet paper after the Fall of Modern Civilization.

      2 out of 5 stars maya 4.5 savvy.......2003-10-05

maya 4.5 savvy is just the old blue mastering maya book with a new cover, its the same stupid child and stupid dog from the previous version..very few ground breaking moments...they used to corner the maya instructional book market..but now they need new content..I don't reccomend it to my students.., however there is one beautiful image of a yellow rusted robot that is contriubuted by a third party artist

4 out of 5 stars A good book for Maya.......2003-09-08

This is the first time I'm going to write an online review. I bought this. This is a good book to start with when you're learning Maya. This is not for beginners of Maya or 3D animation in general. It tackled most of what you will need to start off in the world of 3D animation (in Maya of course). There are gems in this book that you can actually use. for the reviewer that says don't buy this book because it's the same with Mastering Maya 3 What was keeping me from giving it a 5 star is because it didn't cover the other features of Unlimited (i.e. fur, cloth, live). That really disappointed me. But overall, I can live with this book.

                          Book Description

The real estate boom has come and gone. The stock market is always a risky business. Today the smart money is in antiques and collectibles: you don't need much to get started, and the market for everything from furniture to folk art, from bottles to baseball cards, is just beginning to explode!

Bruce Johnson, the expert called the "Dear Abby" of antiques, shows how you can turn today's bargains and discounts into tomorrow's hot money-making deals. Here are hundreds of inside tips that show you how to:
-- Get in on the bottom floor before prices begin to go through the roof
-- Enter the business without a formal education or a sizable investment
-- Expand your operation and increase your income without taking time away from your present job
-- Find the best sales, the best days to attend, and the best deals
-- Negotiate bargains with dealers -- and beat them at their own game
-- Create print ads for your wares that will pull in customers eager to buy
-- Sell your treasures at a profit from your home, or at flea markets, yard and garage sales, auctions, and antique malls

                          Plus:
More than thirty antiques-related services you can run from your home, including caning, appraising, and refinishing.

4 out of 5 stars Dated but there's still lots of good advice here.......2007-04-08

Like other reviewers have said, this book doesn't take into account the Internet factor. But there's still lots of good advice in this book that hasn't changed: What to look for, how to negotiate, and how to get to the good stuff first. These gems will be good for the next century and beyond--as long as people hold yard/garage/tag sales and people use automobiles for travel.

If you want eBay advice, there are hundreds of other books that give you that. But I haven't found one of those books yet that contains the good old-fashioned advice this book has. Plus, some of the old-fashioned salesmanship advice in this book translates well to online venues.

This book reads quickly (read for about an hour before bed and you'll have it knocked out in less than a week), it's entertaining, and it's inexpensive. Pay the cover price plus shipping and it'll still cost you less than $10. You'll probably make your 10 bucks back the Saturday after you finish it. I did.

                          1 out of 5 stars Antiquated.......2006-03-21

Without a fresh look at the marketplace, this book is completely outdated. While you may glean some "useful" information, this book resides in the mid to late 80's and fails to take into account 20 years of change with the advent of technology and the Internet.

The Internet has changed everything, including how sellers perceive the goods they have. Values, frequently updated online and in current specialty books change the buyers methods of approaching the areas the author suggest for purchasing merchandise.

My premise in reviewing this book includes Johnson's suggestions about garage sales, antique dealers, shops, auctions and dealer shows. I am experienced in all methods of acquiring merchandise for resale online and in newspaper ads. Sellers have a better database of information and use this to gain their advantage. With that said, because of increased competition and the Internet, deals can be had if you find the motivated seller.

The same tools available to sellers should be used by serious buyers/resellers. You must research your niche thoroughly and be armed with information and knowledge so you can get the best price. Use completed online auctions and start a library of books on the information you need.

Having some negotiating skills is important but knowledge is king. Armed with prices your willing to pay to make a return on your investment is number one. Using your time efficiently will help you obtain merchandise to sell quickly to turn over cash to keep your enterprise moving.

Johnson's book can set you on a course of where to find goods but you must visit these places in a learning capacity based on the world of information technology, which is critical and not discussed in this book. You must learn to use the Internet because the sellers are using it to estimate values and profits. Many undersell merchandise and their ignorance is your potential bonanza.

Another example is the abundance of Antique Malls, which have become prevalent and are very commercialized. These places generally have zero negotiating room since the sellers aren't present. The items for sale are usually set at top value or beyond and purchasing from these outlets won't provide you with leverage to make a profit.

Smaller antique shops with vendor booths are more reliable yet still priced very high. Once again the person in the store is not the individual selling everything so it's difficult to negotiate a fair price or come in contact with the actual seller. If you can find smaller venues it's possible vendors are occasionally present or nearby, which will provide an opportunity to negotiate. Sellers are usually willing to lower their prices in my experience, especially when you tell them you're a dealer.

Garage sales are good sources, especially if you visit block sales with each house in a community selling items. It's efficient and you may still find some gems. It's tough work but remains a fairly good source and you can negotiate asking prices downward.

Placing ads on Craig's list is a valuable method in obtaining goods. Once again, this method won't be mentioned in Johnson's book because of age.

Online auctions and online malls are a valuable source of finding good deals for items in your niche. Because Johnson's book has not been updated this method is not listed. It's easy and more efficient to find what your looking for in search engines and most times you can deal directly with the seller. You have more control and accessibility to purchase adequate inventory. You're also armed with information and your top-purchasing price.

Buy this book on the cheap only to gather some very basic and rudimentary information if you haven't any knowledge on how to get started. Find your niche, purchase specialty books to perfect your knowledge and test out the area's Johnson recommends. Live auctions are the best "offline" source to work and Johnson provides some basic information on terms used at auctions. Don't get caught up in emotions or competition at lives auctions, stick to your predetermined price and don't budge. Do your homework ahead of time.

It takes sweat equity as well as an investment. Keep good records, as suggested in the book and implement technology. It's takes time, patience and consistency but a part-time business can eventually become full-time.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-02-22

While some of the information was helpful in a very general sense, much of it was outdated and unrealistic. Overall, not a particularly useful book.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2005-12-03

If you are interested in getting into the Antiques and Collectibles market, this book gives some good starter tips, even though it is rather old. While it does not cover the incredibly expanding online and auction market, it is a good source for tips on where to find inventory, how to purchase inventory, how to set up a B&M shop/mall space, and how to be "antique" savvy.

2 out of 5 stars Take with a grain of salt.......2005-04-23

Overall not a bad book as there is a shortage of books to tell you how to actually get into the business of antiques. It desperately needs updating; it has no mention of ebay or other Internet sources. I didn't like the authors advocation of rude behaviour at garage sales and other venues in pursuit of a "deal" or his obvious mistrust of auctioneers. Perhaps it's a regional thing. Don't make it your only source and read with an open mind. Take the good, leave the bad, and get some good books on sales, marketing, and small business to go along with your technical antiques books.
