Vintage and vital..........2005-03-30
This third volume in The Spirit Archives collects the comics from the second half of 1941. Despite what another reviewer says, Will Eisner was not yet in the army, and was still writing and drawing the feature. The Spirit would not reach it's peak until after World War II, but it was still head and shoulders above just about any other adventure strip at the time. Will Eisner, may he rest in peace, was one of the greatest cartoonists of all time. Highly recommended.
The Spirit Archives Series.......2004-04-04
Will Eisner is the only comic book artist to ever have his work shown in a museum of art. His most important work is the Spirit. The Spirit Archives series has brought together all of his work, that was printed in a weekly newspaper insert. However, after the work found in volumes 1 and 2, Eisner was called to active duty and served in the army during World War II. The Spirit carried on, but it was drawn by other artists. Eisner's work does not pick up again until the stories found in Volume 12 of the Archives series. The work in Volumes 3-11 is fine, but it is not the work of Will Eisner.
Where Eisner really begins to take off.......2003-05-12
What's so astonishing about these stories is how variegated and simulatneously superb they were week after week after week--it's astonishing to think of Eisner generating not only such sophisticated and variegated material (almost no single story reads like any other--he changes the tone again and again and again, from sentimental to suspenseful to humorous to scary), but that he did so on a weekly basis. This collection shows him already at top form, and collects some of the most famous of all the SPIRIT stories, including "The Oldest Man in the World" (justly celebrated by Maggie Thompson in ALL IN COLOR FOR A DIME) and "The Jewel of Death" (previously reprinted in Jules Feiffer's book on superhero comics).
Anyone interested in comics at all should buy these just to study Eisner's incredible storytelling technique: in just a few pages every week he could shorehorn in an amazing amount of material. His stories often show astonishing sophistication in narrative compression, and his use of sophiticated layouts and angles seems not just to be informed by film noir but actually to predate its greatest advances. Look, too, at how deftly he delineates character: the Spirit, Ellen, Commissioner Dolan, Satin, and Ebony (who is really the star of the strip at this point) are shown to have complex and multilayered personalities, far ahead of anything done before Eisner (or, some would even say, since).
A series on the verge of exploding into brilliance.......2001-05-14
In the third volume of "Will Eisner's The Spirit Archive," the weekly Spirit stories from the "comic book section" newspaper supplements are almost at the point where they are truly masterpieces. In Vol. 4, we get to 1942 when all the elements finally congeal into the stories that still stand head and shoulders above most of the work being done in comics today, 60 years later. This volume is still not a 5-star effort, but it is an excellent read that is full of stories that holds up nicely six decades later
While Will Eisner's The Spirit has been reprinted multiple times over the decades, these DC volumes are the first time the series will be printed in proper order and in its entirety. It is fascinating to read these stories and watch as Eisner and his assistants find the format and styles that would make comic book history.
Although each 240-page volume sports a US$40 price tag, I think these are items that belong on the shelves of every aspiring comic book creator and any person who fancies themselves a serious fan of the artform. Will Eisner's 'Spirit' series is where much of what we consider the basics for good graphic story telling was first used.

This book is clearly the best one that Alex Ayres has written and compiled. My brother gave me this book in December 1993, and it has been with me ever since then. The bibliography listing is first rate as well, since they list the authors in alphabetical order. This way, the reader can track down a book that is related so that they can check it out.
Make no mistake, this book is jam-packed with more than 2,000 quotations from the Cowboy Philosopher. Readers will definitely get their mileage worth with this book--plenty of quotations to read, a timeline of events, and an excellent bibliography listing (3 pages long), with a total of 43 books listed, and 8 pages of additional subject references for the quotations that are listed in each category. 5 of the books in the bibliography are from Bryan/Frances Sterling
This is not a bad assortment of quotations from a multi-talented cowboy from Claremore--however, the book overlooked one main event: 4 years after the plane crash in Alaska, a statue was unveiled in the nation's capitol (Washington D.C.), on June 6, 1939. The statue is located next to the entrance of Statuary Hall.
The quotation that I really liked was the one on dogs. (as in "I love dogs", "He does nothing for political reasons"). In this book, I came across lots of quotations and even uncovered a book in the bibliography section that I plan to check out this weekend.
I can clearly see exactly why that if it hadn't been for the Cowboy Philosopher, there would have been no way that Americans would have been able to get through the New Deal/Depression 30s without a good laugh--and to look on the bright side for a silver lining during the New Deal/Depression era. A solid accomplishment for a multi-talented cowboy that made the transition from Wild West Shows to Vaudeville to the Ziefgield Follies--and then, eventually, film (71 films in a 17 year career)--from 1918-35.
As I have said before, check this book out--it's a book worth looking into from Alex Ayres with the spotlight on the Cowboy Philosopher. Worth reading--and worth checking out from Amazon.com online.
From cover to cover, you get an excellent introduction, more than 2,000 quotations, a bibliogrpahy, and additional subject references in addition to a chronology of events. This book is clearly worth the wait--and it's worth checking out!

Professor Rogers provides extensive background material on English legal history and shows that the legal documents of the time do give legal answer to the doubts and speculations that have grown up around Shakespeare's will. She shows how the will is replete with elements of civil and common as well as ecclesiastical law and custom, making more understandable the disputed points of Shakespeare's will, and establishing that the will was as correct, incontestable, and conventional as possible. The main thrust of the book, however, is not on the law as such. It is on how the law was used by Shakespeare to serve the best interests and needs of the women and children in his family as well as the friends named therein. As such, the book will be invaluable to students and scholars of Elizabethan society and to all Shakespearean scholars.

A great book and one that gets under Julia's skin. We are all governed by our hormones and our work is obviously part of this. Julia's love life has been covered very heavily because it impacts so greatly on her work.
If you only read one book on Julia read this one!
Don't consider this book!!.......2004-07-21
What can you say about a book, in which all of Julia's former boyfriends and her ex-husband and "almost-husbands" and "actual" husband are listed and the whole thing is called "Boyfriendography" (according to "Filmography")? I have never read anything more disrespectful about Julia, than this book! And the whole story is called "confidential" - although Julia hasn't been involved in the making of this book at all... After you've read it, you know why! To relate the quality of her movies and especially her way of acting in them to the number of people who went to see it at the cinema (the so called "success"...) and, even worse, to the relationship with her boyfriend at the time when the films originate, is kind of sick! The whole thing is not worth the paper it is written on. Even the photographs in that book don't make it worthwhile to buy it. On the one hand, they are only in black and white and on the other hand you can find all of them or similar ones elsewhere - and then you are not confronted with sentences, meant to "explain" the pictures in a way like "Julia with soon to be ex-boyfriend..." I find this book absolutely sickening!!! So if you are a fan of Julia and you want to save your stomach, don't buy this book!!! I regret to ever have done so... But now I threw it into the paper waste - and believe me - it doesn't deserve more!

I bought this text book and the PMP CD-ROM. I found out PMP CD-ROM is a lot easier to understand project managemnet framework. This text book is pretty difficult to understand.

Even though the topics are inevitably dense reads, the authors manage to entertain the reader with funny insights, jokes here and there, and a sarcastic comment or two. Too bad the whole book doesn't read like that because then I'd actually go through the whole thing for the first time in my educational life...but then again it wouldn't be a textbook...

A Good Introductory Text for Project Managers.......2006-07-30
This book provides a good overview on the methodology of project management. This text provides excellent introductory course material as well as most intermediate courses on project management. The well-seasoned veteran will likely find this book too basic as it does not go into much depth on any particular subject.
The book is easy enough to read and is organized very well. It follows a typical project lifecycle as it discusses the major topics and their respective strengths and weaknesses. It thankfully covers project termination which is often forgotten, sometimes purposefully.
The one particular negative is that the Crystal Ball software that comes with the book simply does NOT work with Windows XP, it will not install either manually, automatically, etc. This is unfortunate since a large block of time is dedicated to scenario planning using screenshots of this particular software and the topic is very important to project manager.
A student version Microsoft Project 2002 is also included and does install and work. MS Project is the predomonant tool used in the text for tracking a project. This has it's pros and cons, but this package is the most widely used today, so it is the appropriate choice for a classroom text.
great practical book for workign SEs.......2006-05-03
we used this book in our undergraduate SE project management classes to prepare students to run their senior year project.
the results were great.
this book has just enough explanation of practical techniques, without going into the history and theory of management like the really thick books we use in the graduate courses.
this book covers all the management topics a student or working SE would need to successfully run a project. just add experience and common sense and stir:)
we let the students make their mistakes in their junior year class project while learning pm at the same time. they gain a good appreciation for what the book was telling them to do when they see the problems they had when they ignored (or didnt understand) what they should have done for planning and running a project.
if you are a professional manager, executive, or going for a PMP cert then you will need to follow up with something more detailed. But for initially learning pm andor understanding it this book is excellent.
you dont need to do a project if you read the book and do the exercises/questions. but usign the material on a real project does a great job of reinforcing the need for good pm.
I wish that i had had somethign like this to read when i was starting out. it helps the technical folks understand what management is doing and why, which will help how they interact and will result in a better SE efforts for the overall project.
this is a good introductory book for self study as well as a good textbook. it is worth getting.

Excellent chapters in project selection and termination.......2004-08-19
This book is one of few books mentioning the project selection and termination process, in addition to the other common project management topics, such as budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
While you need to make sure that you do your project right, a more important thing nowaday is to make sure that you are doing the right projects.
While I am trying to find a book on the topic - project portfolio management, I find this old book very useful.

Solid Project Management in theory and practice.......2004-04-13
I've taken 3 Project Management courses in my university graduate program and this was the book I used in the first course. Those in the other two courses should never have been published. I keep referring back to this one. It is solid, up-to-date, including theory and real-world examples.
