    Book Description

Explored in this fascinating account is the decisive role played by the new acrylics, housepaints, and other modern blends in the work of ten influential artists: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Frank Stella, Morris Louis, Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, Richard Hamilton, and John Hoyland. While often undervalued when considering an artist's work, the type of paint used can strongly affect an image's finished look. Detailed interviews with the painters or their assistants reveal how the artists' choices of modern paint engendered new techniques that contributed distinctive qualities to their work.

Jo Crook and Tom Learner are painting conservators in the Conservation Department of London's distinguished Tate Gallery.

Rebecca brings us an underworld of sexual lust and abuse populated by some of the hottest moms and housewives this side of the local grocery store. 5 out of 5 stars Ninth collection.......2005-04-11

Adult black & white collection of drawings.

This is the ninth (or at least ninth) collection of drawings involving housewives. There are around 44 well-drawn detailed drawings of women in the book. The pictures range from somewhat tame (two happy women together) to somewhat extreme (involving bondage in one form or another, humiliation, getting caught in action or incest, or the cooking of some form of the female body). The women are mothers and daughters, teachers, neighbors, one nun and students. The men, if there is a man in the picture, is wearing a dress or other female garment and acting like a servant, or is shown shocked/surprised at the antics of their wife, or is happily walking away from a used woman, or is using someone else's wife. Some of the action is conducted behind closed doors (like the one where two women are caught together in the bathroom) and some of the action is quite open (like the picture of a daughter (I assume) sitting in the backyard with rope attached to one leg and one stake hammered into the ground).

Overall, the collection is interesting, and well-drawn. The collection contains pictures of rape, bondage, and incest. Note: some of these collections contain titles for the pictures on the last page; this is not a collection that has that title page.

          5 out of 5 stars Purr.......2005-11-01

How cats are made is a mysterious process. Of course, to be astonishingly mysterious is one of the 201 instructions for cats in this delightful little book by Leigh Rutledge. These are the instructions which every cat should know, and every cat person should realise. Some are conventional cat wisdom (which, ironically, is often the least understood or apparent). Others are inventive and new.

Sometimes the instructions come in three's:

+ Stay out of the rain
+ Stay out of the snow
+ Stay out of the clothes dryer

          and

          + Be bold.
          + Be winsome.
          + Be wildly tender.

From the start to the finish, this book is a cute, tender, touching collection of aphorisms, ostensibly intended for cats (but they really don't seem to need this kind of instruction), but really for human beings who live with and around cats to both better understand the cats, and better understand themselves. There is implicit wisdom in some of the things that cats do, and some wisdom for us to follow:

+ Chase, but don't hurt, butterflies.
+ No matter how old you are, never be afraid to express the kitten within you.
+ Remember that foxes, skunks, and owls usually have the last word in any confrontation.

How could I not fall in love with a book authored by a man with 28 cats (and people thought my four or five were excessive!) who is said to rescue them from storm sewers, interstate highways (my cat Silver came from such a place) and other such harrowing places?

The sayings are memorable and true; the graphics are adorable and fun. This book makes a good gift for a friend, and a good treat for oneself, almost as good as catnip for human beings!

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2001-12-22

Highly recommended by Hal, age 12 and Toby, a kitten. Words of wisdom for intelligent felines. Warning: Do not share this book with your owner. Our owner got hold of it and now she knows our secrets. P.S. She says it's the best cat book she's ever read.

5 out of 5 stars My Cats Didn't Write This Book But I KNOW They've Read It!.......2001-12-08

I could add instruction number 202..."always try to lay across the keyboard when someone is typing, if that doesn't work, attack the ankles under the desk." This is a cat's book of proper feline ettiquette. It is funny and will make you smile when you recognize your own cats within its pages. It's a nice compact volume, just 4" x 6", and might make a good gift the next time your cat incessantly bangs on the bedroom door after you and your partner have discreetly closed it for privacy's sake. This book shows that there's an art to being a cat, but it's a spiritual calling to be a cat lover.

          4 out of 5 stars A delightful little book!.......1996-08-16

This book features a mother cat's words of advice to her kittens as they venture into the world. It's humorous, but if you have cats, you'll recognize a lot of the behaviors. I'm sure that my cats must have read this book... :-)

Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression. Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD. This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television. Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts. Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style. The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage. 4 out of 5 stars Very detailed book about Ashley.......2003-02-26

Gosh, about half way through the book I began to really bond with this woman as a character and totally look at her mother and sister in a new way. Lovely, beautiful woman with sensitive, brilliant heart.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of James L. Dickerson.......2002-11-04

From the moment I began to read the story of Ashley Judd -
"Crying on the Inside", I knew that James L. Dickerson had risen the ladder of greatness in the world of publishing.

Like many of Ashley's fans, I knew of her famous family ties with her mother Naomi and her sister Wynonna, as the award winning country duo "The Judds".

Ashley's story of isolation and abandonment, in both her personal and professional life, is revealed in stark reality to a public relations, glossy magazine article.

James has most effectively written about the struggle and iron-clad determination that Ashley has imbedded in her soul and psyche. She is a true perfectionist, down to the last detail.

This is not simply a story being told for print. Page by page it peels through the layers of an outstanding actress and individual, to reveal the pearl within the hard shell. Priceless and demanded!

James, I'm honoured that you asked me to review this for you. I can't wait for the next one:) Thank you! Diana

5 out of 5 stars Ashley the Great.......2002-09-20

When you see a book written by James Dickerson, you'd better roll up your sleeves . The veteran reporter/author leaves no stone unturned when he takes on a subject and he's picked a great one to follow his book about Natalie Portman.

Here he checks out Ashley Judd from all angles and perspectives and does so in a fair, thorough and neat manner. It's also a flowing, enjoyable read thanks to his writing skills as he manages to weave Ashley's biography, her life and times, in and around her famous mother and sister -- Wynonna and Naomi Judd.

Dickerson likes battlers and he's got one here. Despite the success of her mom and sister, Ashley's life has not been an easy one by any means and we're swept into the passions and obstacles that helped give us this remarkable actress. We're left with the impression that Ashley Judd is just now starting to come into her own. Even though she's well-established as an actress her best work my be yet to come.

Photos enhance this book which is beautifully packaged and the cover draws you into her life. Her fans, new and old, will not want to miss this one and neither will the fans of the Judds.

                Book Description

The story of how the Jimi Hendrix Experience's first album, Are You Experienced, was made is even more astonishing than the record itself, and this book tells it all. With its finely crafted songwriting, breathtaking guitar playing, and the sheer power of the group, Are You Experienced was unlike anything heard before and paved the way for generations of rock to come. But rather than the result of a concentrated period of hard work, the album was recorded in short sessions between gigs, in radically different studios; moreover, Hendrix first showed most of the songs to the other band members on the day of recording, with no prior rehearsals. Here is the whole story, based on extensive interviews, along with accounts of all the album's influences-Jimi's love affair with Kathy Etchingham, the band's perennially penniless state, the gigs they had to perform to keep themselves afloat, and the growing awareness among British musicians that Jimi Hendrix was perhaps rock's greatest guitarist.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Music Journalism.......2007-05-26

"Fans" might disapprove of some of Egan's critical judgments, but that in no way diminishes his first-class research achievements in bringing to light how one of the best debut albums of the '60s came to be. Mitch Mitchell's is the main voice missing, though manager and ex-Animal Chas Chandler should be heard more. Believe he died before the book was written. Jimi did little rehearsing for his big debut, and the transformation from run of the mill r&b guitar player to interstellar genius seemingly came overnight, or at least as soon as Jimi got away from the U.S. and into the fecund London music scene of 1966-67. It's difficult now to recall just how wild "Are You Experienced" seemed back then. It wasn't as big a hit as you'd think, given its now revered place in rock history. I remember buying it and liking it as a 13 yr old. If you are curious how this artifact was created, then this book will fully clue you in about all the studio and tech music details. It brings Jimi back to life and strips off a lot of the myth.

5 out of 5 stars Chronogical events from the recording sessions! Hendrix fan or not this is very entertaining.......2005-10-30

This book provides an entertaining view of the making of how one of the best debut albums in the classic rock scene.
It provides a chronological view of the whole recording process... from finding one of the best rythmic sections of all time, to tales about how Hendrix and Jim Marshall came up with the sound effects, plus views from the engineer Eddie Kramer. This book is WELL researched.

The author tells the Hendrix story briefly since it's not in the scope of the book, but boy it was so interesting. How Chas Chandler (manager and producer) pushed Hendrix to the limits...

Just read the damn thing! you won't be dissapointed if you have music running through veins.

While one would think the author of a book about the classic Hendrix album "Are you Experienced" would love most of Hendrix's music and be a big fan, maybe that's not true in this case. Egan bashes at least three songs on the album, and later concludes the book with "As stated in the introduction, Are You Experienced is clearly one of the greatest albums of all time." The fact that he doesn't even like a good chunk of the album but then classifies it so highly makes it seem like he's writing an essay at school on something he doesn't care about. Of course any big Hendrix fan will have a few songs he/she doesn't care for too much, but the author contradicts himself in such a strange way that he doesn't seem to like much of Hendrix's music at all.
Anyway, as for the rest of the book, it's just your average information. There's a lot of focus on recording equipment and techniques, which can be quite boring at times, but overall, it's an insightful read, excluding the opinionated part. However, there's really nothing in this book that you couldn't find in another, better one. Buy this if it's at a flea market for $2. If not, find something more worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Paradoxical But Still More Than Worthwhile.......2004-03-03

This book was written by Sean Egan and was published in 2002 by A Capppella books as part of a series called "Vinyl Frontier". I've had it a while and initially just thumbed through it for flavor, then recently went through it cover to cover.

I found this book to a bit paradoxical at times, but with enough merit to recommend its purchase to those into Jimi's music or the history of rock in general. Egan conducted numerous interviews that I haven't found published anywhere previous to this book and the key there is he asked some fresh questions that gave answers to similar questions I've had for some time. For example, Lonnie Youngblood gives interesting perspectve on Jimi the musician in the pre-Experience days. Likewise, the comments by Linda Keith on those exciting days the cusp of Jimi's discovery are illuminating.

Historical perspective is generally excellent, although not exhaustive. This book focuses on AYE and does not bother with historical trivia that does not bear on this album in some direct manner. Once we are brought to the recordings made in late '66 and '67 that became singles and album tracks for AYE, the mostly chronological approach is effective. This fleshes out the differences between the British Track and US Reprise releases effectively, even if Egan's opinions might not agree perfectly with mine.

The technological aspects of these recordings are given some discussion, but not necessarily an exhaustive one from a technotweak perspective. However, the discussion of how the technology was used as a musical research tool and its final effect on the music was given excellent treatment. For example, the discussion of 3rd Stone from the Sun was very entertaining. I particularly enjoyed his mention of people playing their album at 78 rpm to flesh out the vocals that were patched in at half speed. See, people were mining for hidden snippets back there in real time and I'm not the only one to say so!

Now for the more confusing aspects: The back cover starts by talking about albums that are so extrordinary that they influence generations of inspiring artists, yada, yada. Yes, AYE certainly fits that mold, maybe even shatters it to bits requiring a remolding job for all that follow. The problem comes when one reads the last chapter, titled: "The Songs". Herein we are treated to what I consider to be overly harsh criticisms of too many of these songs - such that I'm surprised that Egan considers AYE to be worthy of classic status. Three of the British Track LP tracks, I Don't Live Today, 3rd Stone From The Sun and Are You Experienced receive criticisms that I disagree with, and do so strongly. Those are three of my all-time favorites! Don't get me wrong - I enjoy diversity and respect the opinions of others regardless of how flawed they in
fact are, but this last chapter left me wondering if Egan might have been in a bit of a rush to finish the project off? His writing here is on average less colorful and insightful than the rest of the book and due to the subject matter - the music itself - it sticks out like a sore thumb. But I still strongly recommend this book, without reservation.

2 out of 5 stars A mixed bag...not very in depth but has a few gems.......2004-01-30

This brief book seems to be written by someone that's at best a very casual fan of Hendrix's music. He actually slags off "Electric Ladyland" and states that by the end of Hendrix's life his solos had gotten "boring" (hmmmm...maybe he should listen to "band of gypsys" or "live at berkeley: the second set"?). However if you're a SERIOUS Hendrix fan you'll still find a few nuggets here...you can read some interview excerpts from some of his early studio engineers, girlfriends and career supporters. Although I've read many Hendrix books there were a few details I was unaware of and was happy to discover. I came away feeling I had glimpsed a very specific period of his career...the time period from when he landed in England to when he returned to the USA for his star-making set at the Monterey music festival in California. Other than that the book was a disappointingly light affair written in an offhand fashion by someone that doesn't know much about music (or so it would seem...)

This book is a very rare, but worthwhile title. I, myself, have not even been able to complete it because the only copies I've seen it in now are so small that I can hardly make out the words! They're about two-by-two inches! It hurts my eyes and I just decided to stop where I was. From what I've read, it is a great book that brought old heroes and gods vividly back to life in my imagination. If anyone has an older copy, LARGER copy, please email me at Zell_D@iname.com.

3 out of 5 stars The 2nd edition of the book has it's up and down.......2000-08-20

If the 1st edition of the book wasn't a necessary item for most gamers, the second edition is. The reason for this is that the book tell you which sphere of control are accessible to a priest depending on his deity and also the special powers granted to priest by their deities. This is a positive change that make the priest class seems more realistic to me. However the new concept of avatar (a weaker physical representation of a god that can be sent on the prime plane in his place) is unecessary to say the least. The gods have already many servant Solaar, Planetar ,Deva, Demons & Devils to do their work that the creation of the ambiguous notion of avatar (probably created to avoid the sacrilege of having high level players posing a threat to the gods) is only complicating the problem. The beautiful artwork that was one of the strong point of the original edition is absent from the second edition and you also loose two pantheons (finnish & sumerian )in the mix. All in all you can consider that the second edition is completing the original one but is a little weak to stand on it's own.

3 out of 5 stars too early of a model. Need 2nd edition.......1998-01-27

Good book, but i am looking for the second edition of this work. If you are looking for the earlier model I have located 3, and will consider trade.

This book flew below the radar for some reason, and is abit of a sleeper when it comes to universal popularity.
It is a personal favorite of mine.
This guy walks the walk as well as talking. He is not an ATNA. (All Talk and No Action). He's got the stats to back up his crusade. Guys like him, and say, Guiness Bk #1 Salesman Joe Girard, are the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great motivator written by a great motivator!.......2007-01-07

                      A. L. Williams was a football coach... a man who loved his guys and pushed them to excel in life. And he lived what he preached! You want to be inspired to just DO IT? Get this book.

Williams emphasizes that you have to work hard and be PERSISTENT. Just NEVER, EVER quit. And that's the key. Know what you want, DESIRE it and go for it. Don't let anybody steal your dream. Just do it and hang in there.

He talks about how he got MAD at the rip-off insurance companies, and that anger fueled his drive to excel. He and his friends became tough and tenacious and made things work. Again, that's the key. What a book! Get a copy and mark it up. Read it repeatedly and it'll fire up your soul!

                      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Inspirational.......2006-09-11

Read this book years ago when it came out and read it regularly for motivation and inspiration. AL Williams went out and did what so many of us want to do and talk about doing. This book takes you through the steps of making a difference from his high school coaching days to his motivation to help others and driving incredible change in the insurance world. Great great book and a must read if you want to know how one man achieved success beyond his wildest dreams and than anyone else thought he could do.

5 out of 5 stars The man who took a chance on himself........2005-09-27

I think it's great that A.L. Williams was able to go from a $10,700 coaching job to one of the richest people in the world now worth over $1.5 billion. It proves that this man who took a chance on himself, took a chance that worked tremendously.

Even more impressive is how many people A.L. Williams has helped over the years. Not only the people who joined his company and creating financial freedom, but also all of the people who realized the folly of (w) hole life insurance (and other forms of cash value insurance), the kind of insurance where your money goes into a hole.

A.L. Williams taught people to "buy term and invest the difference." He also taught people to believe in themselves. Are you willing to take a chance on yourself? Then read and carefully study this book and learn the principles of succes that A.L. Williams used to create one of the greatest success stories of all time!

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know what it takes to win then reading this book is enough..........2005-09-18

That chance has paid off amazingly. Today, A L Williams is a billionaire.

In 2005 Forbes magazine ranked him #413 on the list of The World's Richest People with a net worth estimated at $1.6 billion (He is richer than Oprah Winfrey). So, if you want to really know what it takes to become a winner then.....reading this book should be enough.
