In the 1960s and 1970s, an American professor of Soviet economics forayed on his own in the Soviet Union, bought the work of underground “unofficial” artists, and brought it out himself or arranged to have it illegally shipped to the United States. Norton Dodge visited the apartments of unofficial artists in at least a dozen geographically scattered cities. By 1977, he had a thousand works of art. His ultimate window of interest involved the years from 1956 to 1986, and through his established contacts he eventually acquired another eight thousand works—by far the largest collection of its kind.
John McPhee investigates Dodge’s clandestine activities in the service of dissident Soviet art, his motives for his work, and the fates of several of the artists whose lives he touched. The Ransom of Russian Art is a suspenseful, chilling, and fascinating report on a covert operation like no other. It offers unprecedented insight into Soviet culture at the brink of the Union’s collapse.

The Ransom of Russian Art, by John McPhee. McPhee is a Pulitzer Prize winner who in the past has specialized in geology but really can write anything that has real people in real situations (e.g., Giving Good Weight and Looking for a Ship). In this book a chance encounter with a truly eccentric man on a train leads to a story about -- an unparalleled rescue from the Soviet Union, not of Jews, not of intellectuals, not of political dissidents or of oppressed minorities, but of the canvases of dissident artists.
The leading character is Norton Townshend Dodge. He is so well detailed by McPhee and his on words, and so far off the bubble from a boring American standard, that he must surely be a bit self aware and self-inventing. Mysterious money (basically the story is that the family knew Benjamin Graham and paid attention to him), academic economic curiosity coupled with an interest in art, a way of blundering around that worked in the U.S.S.R for no apparent reason, too many friends and acquaintances that were in the CIA, and a strange moldering estate in America that housed the only significant collection of Soviet dissident art in the world - what's not to like?
The portrayal of the Russian artists is less compelling, either because McPhee had less contact and a looser type of relationship with the artists after the fact, or because these artists are largely lost without the suppressing force of authority to define their art and ideas. There are some lovely sections that show fear, jealousy (beating up a rival lover and throwing her papers into the lions' den of the Moscow zoo), alcoholism, the need to hide and the need to show. Others' opinion of Dodge is both amusing and makes him more multi-dimensional.
In the end, Dodge was one of the few forms of subsidization and patronage that kept a select, but large, number of Soviet artists alive and in vodka. The lovely color plates of select Dodge paintings show a bewildering number of styles and a vibrant culture of hidden art. Perhaps creativity does feed off crisis and suppression.
Buy this book, but give it to a good friend.

An eccentric American professor of economics, Norton Dodge, travels throughout the Soviet Union during the 1960s and `70s and into the `80s. He spends several million dollars on dissident art, smuggling it out of the country, in deep violation of Soviet law but not the US's. John McPhee reports on the story, after the fact, and includes vivid descriptions of the artists and their relationships with one another, Dodge and the Soviet state. The Soviet state, of course, is the hulking force behind the story, responsible for making the artists dissidents and causing various among them, from time to time, to disappear or die. So McPhee asks Dodge how he managed to assemble the collection. Was Dodge a representative of the KGB? the CIA? McPhee defers to Dodge's explanations, but McPhee's recounting of his conversation with Dodge about CIA involvement in the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies may engender in the imagination of some readers a hint of the suspicion and paranoia that suffused the culture that originally created the art. About Norton Dodge and his collection (now housed at Rutgers University), the poet Konstantin Kuzminsky says, "Norton thinks art is international. I insist it's purely national." "Americans are afraid of everything which causes too much emotion and tragedy. That is the problem between East and West." Which suggests the gulfs in passion and experience separating this story of Russian art from the trig completeness suggested by McPhee's prose.

I have this whole series of calendars. And I can tell you, I have NEVER used them to keep track of the days. They are wealth of information and pictures, for historical costuming and collecting. I reference them often. They are filled with short but concise descriptions of the items featured. The photos, aren't limited to just the facing page each month either. There are pictures and descriptions covering the gridded "calendar" area and margins as well. If you love full color layouts of antique clothing and accessories, you'll love almost all the calendars by this author. And if you haven't had enough just looking at the pictures, the museums that own the pieces are listed. So you can go visit them.

Hilarious. Uncle Duke based on Hunter S Thompson, bumbles through life in a hallucinary haze serving his opportunistic self-interests first, usually egged on by the corrupt players who run the USA machine.
Uncle Duke sees locations as diverse as China, Haiti, Panama, Kuwait, Hollywood, Iran,Washington, New York. And a job description that includes US Ambassador to China, Governor of American Samoa, football coach, tour guide, bar owner, movie producer, CEO of a highly dodgy medical schoo based in the Bahamas, Ship's captain for Donald Trump, zombie.....amongst others.
A good example as an oilman and Uncle Duke are having a conversation,
Oilman: "What's your going rate for committing an unspeakably depraved but highly patriotic act?"
Duke: "$100,000 + 10%"
Oilman: "I respect you too much to haggle."
Duke: " But I don't work with Albanians and children and pets are extra."

I am in absolute disbelief that no review has ever been given for this masterpiece. I read this book once a week in college. My friends and I could quote it as well as any cult movie of the nineties. "Fetch my dart gun, boy" and other phrases in this book became second nature to us. I cannot possibly recommend any book more strongly than Action Figure and I am in absolute disbelief that is has never been reviewed before. Buy this book...now...and that's my final offer.

A great postcard picture collection. i gave them to my girlfriend as a present, since she has wanted a collection of pulp covers for sometime now. She loved them, I loved them, and all of our friends that also saw them got a kick out of them.
All four of the pulp cover art books by Prion are highly recommended,whether you are a fan of pulp art or just like nice pictures in general. if you are a bit of a collector of pulp covers, get em all and add 92 excellent pictures to your collection.

This book was not very useful for me.
It's hard to understand what reader category it's aiming for.
I couldn't find any interesting thoughts or suggestions on how to make a film. Overall, it is very poorly written and doesn't meet the expectations I had for this book written by such a good film director as Wajda.

Hollywood finally honored a true European Cinema legend at the 2000 Oscars! This fantastic book brings you closer to the master and in turn allows the reader to get a better feel for his movies, which will enlighten you even more. What else can you ask for? Truly a great man of Polish cinema and this book "Wajda on Film : A Master's Notes" puts a exclamation point on that fact! Highly recommended.

The text from Lewicki, Barry, and Saunders is the most complete - and comprehensive - compilation of articles, cases, and exercises I've found in my teaching Negotiations at college, University, and corporate business.
The authors/editors have selected excellent articles from some of the foremost writers on Negotiation ... and coupled them with cases which highlight what you've just read. I have recommended it to friends, and continute to select it for graduate level courses in Negotiations. My students like the text, and plan to keep it on their shelves (rather than sell it back to the bookstore).

I purchased this book as a requirement for an MBA class, and am certainly glad my professor uses it! I have found it to be a very readable, practical and informative book. The readings are by assorted authors from both the academic and professional world, which provides a great understanding of how concepts are actually used. I would recommend this to anyone, student or professional, who is interested in learning more about how negotiation really works.

The articles in this book are great reading. They provide thoughtful insite on many different topics. The cases, however, are completely useless without the instructors' manual. As best I can tell, the instructors' manual is not available for purchase unless you are using this book for a class. Therefore, in my opinion, this book is a poor value outside the academic world.
Comprehensive collection of articles and exercises........1998-07-24
This falls between the average "how to" and academic journal type articles. Great for classroom use, or for enterprising individuals who want to teach themselves about negotiation. Nearly all the authorities in organizational behavior and negotiation are included here. Nice variety of approaches to the subject. Exercises cover the range and include material on natural environment and on international negotiation. International material needs more, but gives good beginning frameworks. Exercises need teacher's manual (forthcoming?).
