    Book Description

In this volume, the third in his classic series on art theory, Moshe Barasch traces the hidden patterns and interlocking themes in the study of art, from impressionism to abstract art. Barasch details the immense social changes in the creation, presentation, and reception of art which have set the history of art theory on a vertiginous new course: the decreased relevance of workshops and art schools; the replacement of the treatise by the critical review; and the emerging interrelationship between scientific inquiry and artistic theory. The consequent changes in the ways in which critics as well as artists conceptualized paintings and sculptures were radical, marked by an obsession with intense sensory experiences, psychological reflection on the effects of art, and an attraction to the exotic and alien--making for the most exciting and fertile period in the history of art criticism.

      Book Description

Whether she's weaving hilarious, sprawling tales while babysitting the terrible tot Alvin, keeping her chubby chum Tubby and his clubhouse cronies in line, or making nice with the friendly ghost she catches reading "People Stories" in her bedroom, Little Lulu is both "Everygirl" and an undeniable one-of-a-kind! Dark Horse Books is proud to present, for the first time ever, the complete run of John Stanley and Irving Tripp's legendary run of classic Little Lulu comics in convenient, reader-friendly paperback volumes. Critically acclaimed and widely regarded as one of the most classic comics ever published, Little Lulu is an all-ages treasure, with stories funny and fresh enough to stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars The Moppet Show.......2005-11-08

Marge Buell's single panel comic, Little Lulu, began in the Saturday Evening Post in 1935. Her unsinkable Moppet made her appearance in Dell Four Color comics beginning in 1945. "Sunday Afternoon" collects all the stories from four successive issues published in 1946 and 1947. Since the four color series alternated various characters, these issues were numbered 131, 139, 146, and 158. As with the hardcover series from Another Rainbow, these Dark Horse editions are reprinted in black and white line drawings with color covers. However, the edition I have of "Sunday Morning" is not like the Amazon picture; It has different cover art with a purple background and no volume number.

John Stanley storyboarded the Dell Marge's Little Lulu comics, but many staples of Stanley's later stories are not yet in place. The boys just got their clubhouse, Eddie was just introduced in issue 120, Annie is not yet Lulu's best friend, Tubby is not yet sleuthing aka The Spider. But Stanley's zany story sense is already apparent, and the clean, simple panels suggest Crocket Johnson's Barnaby.

Cars and horses co-exist in these stories, and it's the first time Lulu's seen a TV. One of the first stories Lulu tells Alvin is a story within a story. Lulu narrates her fantasy narrative, which jars against the "real" version shown in the panels (except that's also a story). "Lulu's Lamp" ends in a conundrum. "What would you have done?" asks Stanley, "well, that's what Lulu did." All of which only hints at what a Stellar job Stanley did on these comics. Lucky for us they're back in these reasonably priced editions of around 200 pages each, courtesy of Dark Horse.

Zelda's Survival Guide is a treasure trove of tidbits on survival, from the doggone determined diva, one of a kind Zelda herself. A fabulous gift book for all ages, from school age children to senior survivors. Each vignette features outstanding photos, costume props and amusing one-liners. The perfect stocking stuffer for the upcoming holidays. Buy several at a time. Fourth in the series of Zelda books, and in my opinion, the best so far. If you aren't already a fan of Zelda, you will be after treating yourself to this entertaining and witty gem.

This is an amazing guide to the first four seasons of the best show ever made. It's filled with facts on all characters - major and minor - along with show recaps and actor bios. It is essential for all true ER fans to own.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Info.......2000-03-29

This book is chock-full of information about characters, plotlines and episodes. Although it only goes through the fourth season, leaving certain aspects of characters lives unknown, it is a definite for any ER obsessive. Each main character is discussed in detail, including education, personal life, family members, situations at the hospital and professional evaluations. Each minor character is also discussed briefly. Every episode starting with the pilot through the last season four episode, "A Hole in the Heart" is summarized by plotline as well.

As an ER fan, I found this book informative and fun. Though some newer characters are left out, the book is very detailed and easy to refer to when watching the show. And if you want to know just how many of Mark Greene's relationship were work related, you need this book!

        Book Description

Dorothy Zopf was not planning to start a new career when she and her husband moved to a village in northern New Mexico. But with the completion of their hand-made adobe house and her children and grandchildren far away, she welcomed the opportunity to join a group of quilters at La Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad in Arroyo Seco. Sharing lunches, scraps of material, and stories led Zopf to begin collecting pictures of quilts from small towns across the state. Gradually she developed a questionnaire for documenting patterns and techniques and compiled a photo log of the quilts.

Now Zopf presents the quilts, their histories, and the stories she collected at senior and community centers around New Mexico. She surveys the blending of Hispano and Anglo-American fiber arts. Northern New Mexico was a wool and weaving culture, where women adapted and assimilated the piecing and quilting techniques brought by Anglo-American immigrants during territorial days. Working in isolation or in small families and communities, they made utilitarian quilts that were also works of folk art. The quilts documented here range from the “old style” quilts, characterized by vertical strips of random lengths and widths, to formal patterns such as Log Cabin and Wedding Ring, to experimental wall hangings. Using materials ranging from old serapes to used clothing, flour sacks, tobacco bags, and commercial fabrics, the women of New Mexico have used their frugality, ingenuity, and creativity to create an enduring legacy.

How the women of New Mexico have used a patchwork of materials to create an enduring quiltmaking legacy.

Beneath each handmade quilt is a warm human being, and a fascinating story. Dorothy Zopf uncovers this material in her fascinating pastiche of oral histories. She pinpoints how what's available and what's needed combine with natural artistry to create lasting and functional treasures. The common thread that weaves this patchwork together is a texture of a place, of a time, and of a group of women who come alive in Zopf's deft hands. The stories and photos she has pieced together are not to be missed.

          Book Description

Trying to get results while working without the apparent authority to do so can be a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. In this revised edition of his bestseller, Geoffrey Bellman shares his proven techniques for enlisting key people in the cause; gaining the support of decision makers; making a greater impact on the organization; taking the right risks at the right time with the right people; creating self-rewards; increasing work effectiveness and self-satisfaction; and navigating through the thicket of organizational politics and power.

5 out of 5 stars Affirmed to change the world.......2007-05-09

A fresh reminder of how leaders are powerless without followers, and how "the rest of us" can change the way our world and our organizations operate.
"Dreams are not realized through small investments of energy, and leaders portray this. Leadership can be seen as energy collected, directed, and released toward a future vision. "
"Belief in what could be and confidence in your supporters' ability to get you there. Your image of the world is different from the image of those who are invested in keeping the world as it is. You see the organization as it could be, in potential, and you risk taking steps toward that imagined organization." I like this book, and have greater affirmation that I can make a difference.

4 out of 5 stars Great handbook on teamwork, and more.......2002-03-19

This book gave me more than I espected whenI bought it.
I was looking for some guidelines on good teamwork behavior, and I didn't got just that but far more usefull insight on plain work.

Reagarding working with others, the best part is the Feedbck chapter. You'll never give advice to a team mate in the same way after you had read this book. Everybody know someone that "takes advice the wron way", well you'll learn that maybe you and everybo else are giving advice in the wrong way.

Besides this particulary well covered subject, the author explains very usefull techniques to improove not only group workin but personal efficiency. All of this is ilustrated with down to earth examples and exercises.

I read the first edition almost one year ago, and I keep going back to it as if it was reference book, and in some way it is

5 out of 5 stars Another Winning Title!.......2001-02-13

Geoffrey M. Bellman provides strategies that support personnel can use to bring about positive change in their organizations. A comprehensive table of contents allows you to go directly to the area of the book that most interests you. In fact, the author designed the book to be read in pieces and many topics stand on their own in manageable chunks. This alone makes the book a useful tool for people who are interested in "leading from the middle." The informal writing style and the many useful lists make these ideas accessible to readers who lack formal business training, and thus are likelier to work in support roles. Bellman believes that instead of complaining about your lack of power, you should build your power and get things done. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to anyone who isn't CEO (yet).

2 out of 5 stars An elementary text.......2000-10-29

I'd love to give this book two ratings. I thought that it did a good job of empowering the reader and introducing basic concepts in leadership. If that was what I was looking for, it'd get 5 stars. Unfortunately, I was hoping for something a good deal more advanced and found little that was useful to me. This isn't really a ringing criticism, since no book can reach all levels of need simultaneously. If you're relatively new to leadership, this is a good book. If you're very experienced, look elsewhere.

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2000-02-10

If I take all of the management books I have read from my time at University till now and stack them up they may form a balance with this brilliant book. The wisdom, down to earth style and practical insight is not just uncommon, it is extrodinary. This book has done more to help me in different management situations than any other. The structured approach to tackling life as a manager is a solid base which leaves enough room for personal style and growth. Anyone who does not read this is at a disadvantage.
