The money shot of musical books!.......2003-11-09
This is a must have for any music fan! Great stocking stuffer!!
A Great Conversation Piece.......2003-11-06
Lyrical Life is a classy, clever gift idea for any music fan and it would make a great stocking stufffer. The artwork is wonderful and the concept is a lot of fun - my friends and I have been quizzing each other on the songs that make up the storyline.
You've got the music in you........2003-11-04
Music is always with you, when you drive, when you think, when you dream and when watch tv. Songs remind you of summers, lovers, moments and moods. This books will capture all of that. It will talk deep into your soul, showing you that the lyrics you know form a nice story, well narrated and illustrated. But this book is way more then that. This book is different for every reader, because each page will resonate in a different way for each reader. There are a thousand stories in this book, hidden among the lines.
You need to find yours!!
You've got the music in you!!! (new radicals)
Lyrical Life is a must have!.......2003-11-03
What a wonderfully inventive idea....the illustrations are SO clever and they MAKE this book, without a doubt. Bold, great colors and textures, creative, very witty and artfully intelligent drawings...we should see more of Mark Malloy!! This book has great appeal to music lovers, and especially to those who grew up during the 70s and 80s. You will find yourself singing along! I bought a bunch to share with friends, and recommend you all do the same.
Hummin' the Tune!.......2003-11-01
Every page has a wealth of tunes, puns and fun! I especially liked the sight gags. The author and the illustrator obviously collaborated well. What I can't understand is how they stopped laughing and got the tears cleared long enough to get this book written!

Very funny and original.......2004-05-14
Even though most of us do not read poetry, there are many famous lines that we have heard and remember. While most often the line will be an opening one, that is not necessarily the case. In this book, the author has taken a famous line from a poem and then added a contemporary, humorous subsequent line. Examples are:
From "Essay on Criticism" by Alexander Pope
"To err is human, to forgive divine."
Followed by
"Some errors I forgive, though quickly. . . . Mine."
From "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
"Water, water, everywhere;"
Followed by
"The plumbing badly needs repair."
From "Marmion" by Sir Walter Scott
"Oh, what a tangled web we weave!"
Followed by
"The webs to spiders we should leave."
The "poems" are very funny, the wit demonstrated by the author is truly impressive. Each poem is also accompanied by an illustration, which makes it even funnier. I enjoyed reading this book and I am sure you will as well.
Armour does it again!.......2000-04-16
I'm big into poetry and Richard Armour books. My dad found this book and brought it home and I read it cover to cover at one sitting. Boy was it funny. And now I can't hear the line "Water water everywhere" without thinking of Armour's second line - "the plumbing badly needs repair"!
Book Description
How underground writers and filmmakers rebelled against the postwar era's antiseptic cheerfulness.
At the height of the Cold War, ten writers and filmmakers challenged such social pieties as the superiority of American democracy, the benevolence of free enterprise, and the sanctity of the suburban family. Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone related stories of victims of vast, faceless bureaucratic powers. Jim Thompson's The Grifters portrayed the ravages of capitalism on those at the bottom of the social ladder. Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley featured an amoral con man in an international setting, implicitly questioning America's fitness as leader of the free world. These artists pioneered the detached, ironic sensibility, so prevalent today, through works that radically juxtaposed cultural references and blurred the distinctions between 'high' and 'low' art. Their refusal to surrender to political correctness and their unflinching portrayal of the underside of American life directly paved the way for the counterculture, which would explode in the 60s and forever change the way that America views itself.

PEELING BACK THE UNDERBELLY OF AMERICA.......2005-07-15
As a photographer who enjoys images more than text these days. This book is so well written that one "sees" images while David Cochran unfurls text in a manner that mimics the tendencies of the writes discussed within the book itself. Cochran knows his politics, his "POST WAR ERA" history and his subjects so well that while reading I had to keep looking at the cover to remind myself why I got the book. It goes beyond the call of duty.
Because of this book, I will be able to ascertain how the current bevy of movies being made on Marvel Comics and dark subject matters stack up to the tone of the era in which they were drawn. Also, I know better why American people are in the shape they are in. With more unresloved issues and more neurosis its a wonder how we have survived this long. Thank God for the Underground Writer and Filmmakers of the Postwar Era, there are valves to let some steam off.
Not an easy read, but a GREAT read!.......2000-06-26
As a tail-end "baby boomer" I have long been fascinated with the changes taking place in popular culture throughout my adolescent years and into adulthood. A long-time fan of MAD magazine, I never really understood the counter culture statements being made in the magazine or how they reflect society as a whole.
David Cochran's treatise, "America Noir: Underground Writers and Filmmakers of the Postwar Era" describes the propagation of a subculture which was not afraid to assert that all was not as rosy as the dominant culture would purport.
Reading the book was very much NOT like reading a novel or one of Rod Serling's short stories. To a certain extent, the book reads like a history text.
America Noir conists of five parts: The Killer Inside Me-Roman Noir Authors; Progress and Its Discontents-Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors; Outside Looking In-Minority Authors; Little Shop of Horrors-Independent Filmmakers; and Cracks in the Consensus-Liberal Artists. These five parts "connects the dots" to form a cohesive picture of the events, attitudes, and expressions which have marked the changing of American society from the period immediately following World War II to the current time.
I have a better grasp of the causes underlying the changes in society from the time I was a kid myself to now when I have adolescent kids of my own. I'm sure I will soon go out to experience some of the books and movies described in "America Noir." It is an excellent addition to my library.

Book Description
Between 1979 and 1981, The Specials, Madness, The Beat and others revived Caribbean ska to enjoy a string of hit records against a backdrop of a Britain beset by unemployment, racial tension and rioting. Coming on the back of punk, 2Tone was remarkably successful, with The Specials notching up classic number-one singles "Too Much Too Young" and "Ghost Town," the latter sounding eerily prophetic amidst the riots then flaring in Brixton and Toxteth.
Book Description
This three-book set is perfect for collectors and an ideal gift for readers unfamiliar with the Forgotten Realms setting. The Dark Elf Trilogy--Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn--are enclosed in a hard-sided slipcover case featuring the cover art from the series.
Customer Reviews:
Well written.......2007-09-14
Well written book(like I would expect otherwise from R.A.Salvatore)I would, and have suggested this one and other books of his to others, and will continue to do so.
The Tale of Drizzt's Past, Salvatore has Done It Again!.......2007-08-17
To think, Drizzt was originally going to be Wulfgar's sidekick.
This is an amzing journey into the Underdark of Faerun. A mystical trip into the city of Menzoberranzan, city of the Spider Queen. There are so many questions after Icewind Dale aobut how Drizzt came to be the drow he is today, and this trilogy answer them.
The characters in this book are more of those love to hate, and hate to love types. Verna, Malice, Matron Baenre, Dinin, and some you just hate, personally Alton DeVir, Masoj, and Briza. Some you just come to love, like Zaknafein, Drizzt's father, who was the renowned weapons master of House Do'Urden and secretly hated drow society as a whole. And Belwar Dissengulp, a svirfneblin. And Clacker a polymorphed pech. And my favorite an important and true friend named Montolio Debrouchee (Mooshie), who teaches Drizzt the ways of a ranger. (We must mention Gwen at this time, because she is Drizzt's first friend... she ROCKS!!!)
It is really a set of books about overcoming your Station in life and choosing a path that fits your soul. It helps to understand Drizzt's character, and how he came to be the drow he is, and why he cares so much for a world that doesn't want to accept him.
If you love Icewind Dale, this is the next chapter, but i would suggest to everyone, read Icewind Dale first.
I always say read them in the order they are meant to be, the way they were written!
What can I say.......2007-07-25
BUY THIS BOOK! I started with this trilogy even though it was a prequel to the icewind dale trilogy. R.A paints a beautifully dark story with the dark elf trilogy. I recommend starting here. One of my all time favorite series!
The Dark Elf Trilogy.......2007-07-07
I loved reading this (these) books. I finished all three in 3 weeks, and it really helps to define and document why Drizzt is Drizzt. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes this genre of book or story.
I expected a bit more.......2007-06-08
This is my first introduction to the Dungeons & Dragons-based Forgotten Realms setting. I haven't played any games (well long time ago I played an old LPmud which contained a small part of Underdark) or read any books related to this world. Unfortunately, I cannot give the trilogy more than 3.5 stars. I liked the story and it was a page turner but there are too many drawbacks to my taste.
I started to feel a bit tired towards the end of the third book of Drizzt who seemed to be always in depression. I never felt like worrying about him to loose a fight or so. His friend Belwar fared pretty well despite the loss of his hands. He now bears an enchanted weapon on each stump, one a pickaxe and one a hammer. How on the earth does he cook/eat/goes to toilet? Another big drawback is that the trilogy lacks any romance instead it has too many fighting scenes with too many details than necessary. All in all, the trilogy is OK. I even bought next one The Icewind Dale Trilogy, though I have a feeling it is going to be as predictable as this one and good guys will always win. We will see.

- as I have askethed, so I have been giveth

Book Description
Sojourn
Far above the merciless Underdark, Drizzt Do'Urden fights to survive the elements of Toril's harsh surface. The young drow begins a sojourn through a world entirely unlike his own -- even as he evades the dark elves of his past. He begins to understand his new home and its inhabitants, but acceptance among the surface-dwellers doesn't come easily.
Customer Reviews:
as I have askethed, so I have been giveth.......2007-07-20
an excellent book, all that I was hoping for in a great conclusion, and yet an amazing lead into the crystal shard book.
we have asked and Salvatore has given, a great book for one who loves fine characters, great plots, and above all, a good story.
sets a great and believable stage for life above ground for drizzt.......2007-02-23
again, enjoyed the book, nothign spectacular, but enough creativity, action, and drizzt to make it 5 stars. one of the most likable charatcers ive ever read about it, i like his silent sidekick also.
BEAUTIFUL!.......2007-01-08
The graphic novel adaptation of R.A. Salvatore's monumental Dark Elf Trilogy comes to an exciting conclusion in Sojourn from Devil's Due Publishing. Drizzt Do'Urden has fled from his home deep under the surface with his faithful companion Guenhwyvar, the magical black panther, always on the run from his Drow who wish to kill him. Despite the sun weakening him, Drizzt cannot help but stare at each new dawn in his strange new world. He comes upon a village of peaceful farmers, observing them from afar, and even killing the Gnolls who want his aid in attacking the small settlement.
But when a family of farmers is murdered, Drizzt is blamed sending a vengeful hunter named McGristle on his trail. Drizzt slays the real killers, two Barghests from the lower planes but finds himself on the run from McGristle, and a party of adventurers led by the Ranger Dove Falconhand. When Drizzt aids them in battle against a group of stone giants, Dover realizes that Drizzt is a friend and ends the search for him. McGristle, though, is driven by hatred and presses on, trailing Drizzt all across the Forgotten Realms. Will Drizzt ever find acceptance in a world that is conditioned to believe that all Drow are evil?
Devil's Due sparkles with the final part of Salvatore's trilogy. One of the main themes of his story was that pall of isolationism. Drizzt is not only an outcast among his own kind, but he's an outcast among all kind. He's constantly harassed and driven away by those who fear him for no good reason often times other than the (much deserved) evil reputation of the Drow. Andrew Dabb's script does a great job of keeping this a focal point of the tale.
The pencils of Tim Seeley, a great team of inkers, and colors by Blond are once again a strong point to the book. Outside of the confines of the Underdark the artists are given a little more freedom to open up their expanse and create a more vivid and rich setting for Drizzt. Fans will be happy to know that Drizzt's adventures will continue in The Crystal Shard and Devil's Due will be presenting more of Salvatore's work with their adaptation of his DemonWars series. Devil's Due pulled off another great win!
A Great Conclusion........2006-12-03
Sojourn is the last book in the Dark Elf Trilogy and a great conclusion. Drizzt, after all his adventures in the Underdark, has finally made it onto the surface. This book introduces us to some great new characters, one of whom will eventually become one of Drizzt's most powerful enemies, and tells us how he ended up in Icewind Dale. This book is a great note to go out on and leaves you wanting more.
Enjoyable tale that brings Drizzt out of the underdark .......2006-09-02
This is the last book in the Dark Elf Trilogy that tells the tale of how Drizzt fares in the surface world. I think its a great follow up to Exile, and really puts into perspective the challenges a dark elf faces in the eyes of surface dwellers that do not want to accept him. Once again, Salvatore creates memorable characters that heavily influence Drizzt's life. He learns and gains much wisdom in this book and I think its a necessary bridge to Icewind Dale.
Although I admit I missed the underdark, Sojourn is still a very enjoyable read. Salvatore presents the material in a very believable manner and we really get to see inside the struggling character Drizzt Do'Urden. By the end of this book, he finally comes into his own and moves onto bigger and better things in the Icewind Dale Trilogy. Welcome home :-)
