Americans in Paris 1860-1900 (National Gallery Company)
ASIN: 0520242076 |
Book Description
This landmark book is the first to capture the diversity of American artistic production of the interwar period in Paris. Assembling works from American and European collections to illustrate the presence of American artists at the heart of numerous avant-garde movements, including Purism, geometric abstraction, and surrealism, A Transatlantic Avant-Garde chronicles an uncertain time of transition when many American artists resisted the nationalist trends of Stieglitz and his circle and flooded the French capital seeking artistic exchange.
Abundantly illustrated, this book includes over 200 color reproductions of artwork by both American artists and those European artists with whom they came in contact, including Alexander Calder, Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Albert Eugene Gallatin, Jean Hélion, and Fernand Léger, as well as those from the surrealist circles, such as Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. It also includes portraits of the illustrious characters by Berenice Abbott, Lee Miller, and Edward Steichen.
This book reflects the transatlantic dialogue of the era by bringing together groundbreaking research in eight essays by both American and French authors. It is further enriched by a detailed chronology, bibliography, and illustrated insets that trace the incessant travel, encounters and ensuing friendships, exhibitions and publications of the American avant-garde.
A Transatlantic Avant-Garde: American Artists in Paris, 1918-1939 accompanies a major traveling exhibition organized by the Musée d'Art Américain Giverny.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas!.......2002-09-24
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!
A picture book.......2000-04-16
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye) and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they are doing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tell you to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned, what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show only one picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of how to position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more in depth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go to many web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection of pictures. Very disapointed in this one......

Fun book!.......2005-09-27
If you have a bored teenager on your hands, this is the book to get. Some supplies from the craft store, and you're ready to unleash your creativity and wear it to school...
Nice books for ideas.......2000-12-01
This a nice simple book on how to start decorating your T-shirts. The instructions are simple but I would have had the sample pictures near the instructions instead of at the end. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it for beginners, it inspires you to give is a go.
Big on Ideas! Basic Techniques........1999-08-03
Interested in designing your own T-shirts but can't decide between techniques? This is a fun book --providing basic techniques for tie-dye, marbling, batik, stamping, and more. The illustrations are wonderful and inspiring. The instructions are really simple. Within days of purchasing this book I was dyeing and painting a handful of hand-me-down baby clothes. Serious fun!

Book Description
With these 150 fabulous designs, T-shirts change from plain into one-of-a-kind wearable art. The creative and fun techniques will attract both adults and children, and they range from painting and embellishing (with great new info on using everything from beads to appliqués) to stamping and printing. The tie-dye patterns include pretty shibori projects, and there’s colorful batik, marbling, and screen printing. Or, for a fun new alternative, try image transfers. All the materials are easy to find and to use, and a basics section for each technique explains all the materials and how-tos, complete with detailed illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
copied from earlier books - no new material.......2006-11-02
This book is a combination of two earlier Lark books, The Great T-Shirt Book: Make Your Own Spectacular, One-Of-A-Kind Designs, by Carol Taylor (1992), and The Ultimate T-Shirt Book: Creating Your Own Unique Designs, by Deborah Morgenthal (1998), copied word-for-word and photograph-for-photograph. It contains almost no new material at all.
Oddly, the copyright page gives no indication that the book consists of previously published material. Even the names of the two original authors, Carol Taylor and Deborah Morgenthal, do not appear anywhere on or in Chris Rankin's book, not even on the copyright page.
Publishing old books under a new name, with a new author, amounts to fraud against buyers who previously purchased the earlier books. We are going to have to be cautious about anything published by Lark Books.
Those who did not purchase the earlier books will find this book to be useful and inspiring. It contains a large number number of well-photographed, beautiful, professional-looking examples of how to paint, tie-dye, stamp, marble, batik, and screen print t-shirts. The instructions are not detailed enough to be fully useful, but they are good enough to decide whether a technique sounds intriguing enough to bother finding more reliable instructions for it.
Product Description

Booklet includes 8 patterns and two instruction sheets. Patterns include: Sheep, hearts, flowers, Cow and bird, Bunnies, Cat and fish, Tulips in basket, Bear, Large Fish, and Dinosaur.

King Kirby.......2007-03-18
Jack Kirby was the King. He was the greatest and most powerful of all comic book artists. If you love comics and don't know Kirby, you owe it to yourself to explore his work -- much of which, thankfully, is available between book covers. There have been other great artists, but there was only one Kirby.

Avoid getting bitten, stomped on or stung, and don't eat wild mushrooms!.......2007-08-10
I read this short (110 pages), tongue in cheek book, because the author, Buck Tilton, had written an excellent short book on first aid in the wilderness, "Backcountry First Aid". So since the reviews on Amazon for this book were pretty good, I decided to give it a read.
The best that can be said about it, is that it is a very quick read, and it is mildly amusing. Tilton devotes a page and a couple of hundred words to 100 different outdoor menaces, from Cape Buffalo, and various sharks, to varieties of parasites and stinging insects. And he offers some basic advice, like avoid getting stepped on by rhinos, don't eat mushrooms in the wild, that sort of stuff. Each entry begins and ends with a witty aphorism or pithy statement.
The book is OK, but as a genuine guide to avoiding outdoor dangers, has nothing particular to offer.
Pretty Funny!.......2007-07-27
As an active outdoorsy girl, I have read this book many times. This is a funny way of explaining dangers in the outdoors for anybody that is interested. Very realistic and quite helpful! GREAT BOOK!
THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD (FOR EDUCATION).......2003-05-14
This book is soooooooo fabulous, I read it when I was in 4th grade and know after years and years I still love this highly funny and informative book. This book can be a real lifesavor, for this book is cut up into sections (short chaptors)and one is ruined by reclus, well I learned what exactly they look like and I found some in my own house I might have picked it up not knowing what it was. This is the best book.
Funny and informative.......2002-07-07
This book is great! The author shares a lot of detailed information about dangerous animals / situations you might encounter outdoors that can lead to death. And he describes it in a very entertainment, yet funny style. This book is suited for both adults and kids.
Morbidly funny, breezy, yet highly educational.......2000-02-27
This book tells you about all the dangers in the great outdoors and how you could possibly get sick and die from them. It describes in graphic detail all the symptoms you will experience from everything from jellyfish stings to polar bear attacks to tse-tse fly bites. For the morbidly curious, the book spares no gorey detail about diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, drooling, bleeding, and convulsing. In a very straight forward style and easy to understand terms, Tilton brings you specific information on these potentially dangerous plants and critters of the wilderness. He doesn't get bogged down in too much science, yet gives you just enough information to laugh, learn, and hopefully avoid the pitfalls contained in this hilarious yet educational tome. All learning should be this much fun.

An in-depth study of the films that had as their primary focus or theme sports and athletic competition.......2006-06-02
Contesting Identities: Sports In American Film by Aaron Baker (Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies at Arizona State University) is an in-depth study of the films that had as their primary focus or theme sports and athletic competition. Guiding readers through a complete understanding of the film industry's sports movies from the era of silent movies through the blockbuster productions of today, Contesting Identities provides an informative review of sports films elements and issues such as race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and more. A seminal contribution to Film & Cinema Studies supplemental reading lists and academic library reference collections, Contesting Identities is very strongly recommended for film students and sports enthusiasts searching for a comprehensive and intelligible grasp of the historical progression, identity, ideals, and production of sports-oriented films.

Customer Reviews:
Good book but reads more like a manual..........2005-08-28
I was interested in learning chord substitutions for piano, but opted to buy this book which is actually geared for guitarists. I found out that there was plenty of theory for a 68 page book. The introduction is brief, and gets straight down to business. The examples are given in guitar grids and staff notation, so deciphering them wasn't a problem. The chords themselves are given in a lead sheet style. The only caveat is that it reads more like a manual than a well written book, and there are no examples on jazz patterns. So pianists can actually imbibe a lot of theory from this book and it has really helped me for comping.
Other than that I think future publications can introduce other aspects of jazz theory to make it more complete for its price.
Customer Reviews:
It's your thing if you ain't got that swing (yet)........1998-06-23
This book is meant for players who have a basic understanding of chords and chord mechanisms in Jazz, and covers a lot of material that is relevant to swing comping. I recommend this book. It covers the subject well and gives many hints on how to sound good when comping. However, if you need to learn new voicings and chords, you'd be better off buying a chord chart.

Book Description
If every board member of every nonprofit organization across America read this book, it's no exaggeration to say that millions upon millions of additional dollars would be raised.
How could it be otherwise when, after spending just one hour with this gem, board members everywhere would understand virtually everything they need to know about raising major gifts. Not more, not less. Just exactly what they need to do to be successful.
In his book, Fund Raising Realities Every Board Member Must Face: A 1-Hour Crash Course on Raising Major Gifts for Nonprofit Organizations, David Lansdowne has distilled the essence of major gifts fund raising, put it in the context of 47 "realities," and delivered it in unfailingly clear prose.
Nothing about this book will intimidate board members. It is brief, concise, easy to read, and free of all jargon. Further, it is a work that motivates, showing as it does just how doable raising big money is.
The appeal of Fund Raising Realities is that Lansdowne addresses every important principle and technique of fund raising, and explains them in a succinct way board members will grasp immediately. In other words, Fund Raising Realities puts everyone on a level playing field - board member with board member, and board member with staff.
Put this book in your board's hands, put it in your board orientation packet, put it anywhere you need the successful practice of fund raising masterfully illuminated.
Customer Reviews:
Swift, stern, complete.......2007-06-23
David Lansdowne is the stern but understanding father of major gift solicitation. He pours light into shadowy corners, sets realistic expectations, punctures silly myths, and swiftly explains each step in the solicitation process, from preparation to asking to the thanks. He delivers full weight on the promise of his title and holds your hand throughout (though his touch is more of a sharp tug; clearly he's been through this a thousand times and heard every board member dodge and complaint). This is a super-fast read; ideal for busy board members. Lansdowne also makes clear that success is mostly a matter of diligence, common sense, and heeding expert advice -- and his advice is rock solid, industry tested. I rank this top shelf, up there with Kay Sprinkel Grace's Ultimate Board book and Jerry Panas' Asking.
Don't Bore your Board Members.......2000-12-29
Everyone who works in the wonderful world of not-for-profits realizes that the dreaded day will come when they have to make an ask for money. This terrific book not only outlines the how-to of making such an ask, but also teaches the board member that this is their board participation responsibility. The book takes you step by step through the process teaching you that the best way to avoid the fear of the situation is to be well prepared.
However, i think one of the most important aspects of this book is that it convinces board members that theirs is a noble cause and that asking for money should bring a sense of pride, not shame. That may be a hard sell, but i think Lansdowne succeeds.
Lansdowne offers a well organized book that anticipates the pitfall of fund raising, while providing a well mapped procedure to follow.
