    Book Description

For artists and intellectuals today, what is most needed is to be clear about social responsibility.... You don't have to march on Tiananmen, but you have to be clear-minded, to find your own way of expression.... The bottom line is that you are an individual person; while you are here you'd better be yourself and speak what you think is right. In China we have a saying that goes: You're in a valley and overhead between the cliffs you see a white horse jump over the gap. That's life. It could be a few concepts or moments in which you live that have no meaning to others. --Ai Weiwei Conceptual artist, publisher, and architect Ai Weiwei returned to his native Beijing in 1993, where he set upon creating the daring, surrealist sculptures and performances documented here. From his smashing of a Han dynasty urn to his wonky deconstructions of Qing dynasty tables, Weiwei ruptures notions of historicity and respect. And then there's his 6-meter-high Chandelier and his series of snapshots of his own hand (presumably) giving the finger to a world of monuments, from Tiananmen Square to the Eiffel Tower, from the White House to the Reichstag.

    2 out of 5 stars now what I'd hoped/expected.......2007-05-08

Somehow from the title I'd expected some good ways to use up one's huge collection of different wonderful yarns. Instead, I didn't like much any of the sweaters, and they seemed to be pretty yarn-specific. If you want to use up lots of odds and ends, try Kaffee Fassett.

4 out of 5 stars Love the patterns and the photos...not so much the layout.......2007-03-06

This book is a wonderful addition to my knitting library. It has a terrific focus on using up your yarn stash. Rare for me, I love at least 75% of the patterns. It has things I'd actually wear.

I do dislike the layout of the book. If you are working on a pattern from a certain chapter, you must go back to the beginning of the chapter for stitch instructions. That means that all the instructions you need for a pattern may be in 2 or 3 different places in the book. I really hate that although it is nothing that a trip to the copier can't solve. I believe all of the instructions to knit a garment should be in the same spot. It is fine to put blocking or finishing elsewhere but putting stitch directions elsewhere flies in the face of how people knit.

Otherwise, I'm a fan of the book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition.......2004-12-30

I own a staggering number of knitting books, as well as knitting software, so there is no shortage of pattern possibilities in my life. Nevertheless, this book is a worthy addition to even the most overstuffed knitting library. The approach is a series of stitches evolving into multiple incarnations at multiple related gauges. (The gauge variations are kept within a sensible range --this book won't take you from fingering to chunky for every design, nor should any pattern!) This book actually has me enthused about tackling some of the orphan projects in my stash and will be an encouraging resource on those shopping trips that end with "I just have to have this yarn -- I'll figure out what for later."

5 out of 5 stars Unique designs, beautiful projects & yarns.......2004-08-18

This new knitting book, written book by Julie Montanari, is a real find. The presentation and layout of the book is very clear, easily readable and lots of color pics, which make it a joy to browse through. Julie has selected 6 of her favorite stitch patterns and created several designs that incorporate those stitches, progressing from simple to more complex designs. Julie makes up each project in an interesting yarn fabric, discussing why this particular yarn is appropriate in this case. She then offers at least 2 variations in color and yarn, illustrating the design versatility that can be achieved through yarn experimentation.

Julie in an incredible designer, who gives the reader two dozen projects expressing her considerable ability to create unique stitch patterns, coupled with interesting yarns. Her design theory is discussed, and more importantly, clearly expressed in this collection of classic projects of mostly sweaters and vests, guaranteed to be fashionable for decades. The projects span the seasons, with several delightful summer shells, along with warmer tunics, pullovers and vests.

Julie confesses to having a huge yarn stash and sharing with her readers that passion for collecting interesting yarns. Her projects offer ample opportunity to use that stash in easily creative ways. There is a thorough discussion of yarn types, including a vast array of of novelty yarns. Julie enthusiatically encourages personal experimentation in choosing and combining yarns. Each project is shown made up in a particular yarn fabric, with 2 or 3 alternate yarns and colors shown in knit swatches, offering a variety of looks, from sophisticated to casual.

Julie offers a unique, understandable system for sizing a project, incorporating personal garment ease, and calculating yarn yardage requirements, all dependent on a knitted swatch. Each project includes a complete measurement charts and diagrams, along with very clear, easily understood guidelines for fit and project tips. Everything you need to ensure success is available and beautifully presented.

Because of her guided encouragement to expand you knitting horizons by creating your own yarn fabric, perhaps even creating your own stitch patterns, you definitely will want to add this book to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is a truly great book........2004-07-27

I have been knitting and crocheting since I was five. I am now an intermediate - advanced knitter. This book really does combine wonderful yarn with great patterns - most of which could be knitted by a beginner. I found it inspirational. It was hard to decide which pattern to start with-they are so good.

This may be the best of the new books.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only.......2007-07-03

As far as I know, this is the only graphic novel made about the MTG trading card game. Gerrard's Quest relates the story that is the focal point of the Weatherlight, Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus expansion packs for MTG. These sets and the story they tell represent the most advanced and complete story of the MTG universe. Gerrard's Quest is really a companion book to Rath and Storm (Magic the Gathering Anthology), which essentially tells the same story with a little more detail (but without the colorful pictures). In order to get the whole story, both of these books should be read. Neither contains the entire tale and each adds its own dimensions to the overall. Also consider ART OF MAGIC, THE (Magic the Gathering Artbooks), which is full of very nice illustrations of characters, settings, and much more pertaining to this story.

In Gerrard's Quest, Gerrard has become the temporary captain of the Weatherlight and must travel to the world of Rath to battle his old friend Vuel and rescue the old captain Sisay. Gerrard's Legacy also plays a major role in the story, while its true purpose remains somewhat of a mystery. A large group of well-developed and interesting characters accompany Gerrard on his quest, and interactions between all of these characters help bring the story to life. This is the most well-planned and complex storyline of the MTG literature. A great story.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best graphic novels on Magic: The Gathering.......2001-07-06

This is the second attempt at comics based on the Magic: The Gathering game world (The Acclaim series was discontinued in 1996). In many ways, this is the best drawn and most interesting one. The story is about the adventure of Gerrard and company as depicted in the M:TG Tempest card set. Unfortunately, the book has not gained much popularity and it remains the only title in the planned series.

        5 out of 5 stars Gerrard's Quest.......2000-05-22

This was a great book highlighting the travels and adventuresof Gerrard and the Weatherlight. I would reccomend this to anyone thatis interested in Magic: the Gathering. Even if you are not into Magic I would suggest it as a great fantasy novel.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable film guide.......2001-09-30

Covering the full range of modern American filmmakers from established auteurs to first-time directors, this is an amazingly well researched and informed book that sets out to paint a picture of US cinema in all its varied forms. Of particular interest is the information on directors normally excluded from mainstream film encyclopedias - indie directors, pop video makers, first-timers, art-house filmmakers etc. - making for a book which gets to the parts other books just can't reach.

Set out as an alphabetical encyclopedia, each entry includes a complete filmography, contextual and biographical information on each filmmaker, and a specially commissioned critical article which discusses themes, styles and issues central to their work. The range of writers, from film journalists to PhD students to lecturers, makes for an unusually varied and lively authorial tone, though the best entries are the ones which move beyond the constraints of straight film criticism into proper articles. The critical article and full filmography make for a really complete account of the development of each director's career.

An indispensable reference tome whether you're a film writer or just your average movie goer, this book really delivers an informed and interesting read. The publishers say there will be subsequent volumes on British, European and World directors. If they're all as well done as this, I'll be buying every one.

I purchased this book thinking I could master this beautiful craft. The book itself is fairly well written, with gorgeous pictures step-by-step. The downfall is that the author fails to tell you that the projects take a long time just to assemble, and during this time, the salt dough becomes dry and begins air-drying itself, becoming crusty, which later causes problems during baking. There was no solution for this. The baking itself is fairly simple, but it takes FOREVER! My gas bill went up a good amount during this time!!! I don't know about you, but I was never able to do one of these projects in the evening, because you have to bake it immediately and for as little as 3-4 hours and up!!! I found small projects taking 6 hours and up to bake, and ended up being all-day affairs. Larger projects require in the upwards of 18 hours to bake! If you can sit and watch your oven for that amount of time, then this is the craft for you. The author states you need lots of time and patience with this. I guess I thought I had a lot of time, but found it wasn't enough. A well written book, but a truely time-consuming craft.

                    2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2000-01-28

There is not enough instructions for some of the projects. In one of the projects there is not even all the things to fill out the tree. On the Advent tree there are only 22 projects to put on the tree and there should be 24. Now the basket ideas are just beautiful and I am goin to try one today and see if I can master the project. I was glad to see your instructions on making fruit because some of the other books I have, say not to even try making some of the fruits because they have to be so thick that they do not work and they were wrong.

                    Book Description

From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.

Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”

Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

Unless your a fan of this braggard, who's gone
bankrupt more times than O.J., the N.Y. and N.J
markets are gonna be oblique to most. But the sports
parts are not that good. Yes, I was glad to see the
USFL challenge the overrated NFL and yes, I was glad
to have trumps high priced lawyers stick it to the
Corporate Fascist Alvin H. Rosencranz (who euphanis-
tically called himself 'Pete' Rozelle. But Trump
makes so many wrong statements in here that one has
to wonder if there was an illiterate ghost-writer
afoot. No, the American Football League did NOT
start in 1962, it was 1960-69. No the 1970's old
World Football League didn't start in 1973, it was
1974-75. He also lied about Don Shula, Miami's
legendary Coach about to come Coach the USFL's
New Jersey team. Trump claims Shula nixed the deal
because he wanted an apartment in Trump's building
                    - Free! He claims Larry Csonka's idea to merge the
CFL (is something like that were posible) was a
bad idea caliming that the CFL had a bunch of nobody
players - totally untrue! They still to this day have
many great players. NFL QBs like Trent Green, Jeff
Garcia and others have CFL experience. Trump's sign-
ing of Doug Flutie was a highlight to be sure. It was
the third straight Heisman winner the USFL beat out
the NFL from getting in their league although they
all went there later. Get Flutie's book entitled
Flutie for the real story. It took Flutie until 1988
to get all his money owed him. Trump's main loss in
a USFL sense was bribing the other USFL owners to
going to the fall. Yes, this artsie-fartsie dealer
is slick. But is always comes back around and now
he is on the Apprentice. And dumb commercials.R.I.P.

5 out of 5 stars I just really enjoyed it.......2007-09-10

So this book is not a plain "how to" book. That's fine. If you have just enough skill, you'll find that this is not only great story telling about how he put all these deals together that made him millions upon millions, but also how he did it. He throws bits of his psychology around through out the book, those are easy to catch, and if you look just a little deeper you'll see all the other points that helped make him so rich, things like: persuasion, hard work, calculated risk, being involved in your business, don't leave things to chance, work with the best, don't be afraid of something you don't know, find ways to make things work for you, etc. I could go on and on.

Don't expect this to be your "how to make deals manual" but if you are the right person, you just might get more pointers than you expect. Like I said in the title, I just really enjoyed this book, regardless of what it is not.

                    5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-09-03

This book may be 20 years old, but the practices explained are as timely today as they were then. The basics rarely change, whether you are dealing in real estate or producing a product. The chapters are concise, solid stories on how deals were put together, obsticles overcome and politics played. Mr. Trump's style is an easy read and explains the game that he loves and makes no apologies for; making money. I found it a fascinating book.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhh The Donald............2007-07-25

Dont expect to get much advice on how to negociate a deal.. even though the book is titled "The art of the deal" The book is more so about Trump, his life and his business dealings. Its still pretty good reading none the less. 4 Stars.

                    4 out of 5 stars I'm not a big fan of Trump.......2007-07-01

But I have to be honest; I thought the book was great. Mostly, I'm not a big fan because I find him to be vein, pompous, arrogant, and a blatant self-promoter. You have to give it to him though, this is what works for him, and this is what has made Donald Trump a household name. I think he'd be successful regardless, but like most successful developers he wouldn't be a celebrity (how many millionaire developers do you know?). The beautiful thing about it is he's pretty honest about his strategy in the book. This book was written 20 years ago, and even then he was the same guy. He understands the power of promotion, even if it's self-promotion.

There are several things I loved about the book. First, his blatant honesty about himself, the reason why he does the things he does, and his opinions on his rivals. He comes clean about his strategy for calling everything he does the best, greatest, or biggest "in the world". He knows it may or may not be true, but he's just after the effect of those powerful words, and not whether or not they can be contested.

Second, I enjoyed the journey of traveling through his mind, as he contemplates the pros and cons, and finally the reason for moving forward with or declining the deals described in his book.

Lastly, I really felt like you get a better understanding of what his day-to-day is like. Even thought this is 20 years ago, his routine is probably about the same, doing a thousand things at once. All of which must meet his standard for tremendous scale and proportion.

Trump has a strategy, and his arrogance is part of it. He has reached his many goals and for him, life is really about these challenges, and the fun of surpassing them and getting to the finish line. This hobby of his has amounted to a tremendous personal fortune. But in the end, it's clear that it's not so much about the money, as it is about winning. You can take away some pretty valuable lessons from this book.

So regardless of how you feel about the guy, the book is worth checking out. It's no masterpiece (thus my 4 stars), but it is entertaining, insightful, somewhat motivating and instructive, and a very easy read. Definitely recommend.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Informative??? .......2007-08-06

As a former employee of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, I feel the book lacks the real value of a lesson. I believe Mr. Trump has an incredible ability to market himself to the public. However after being employed by the Trump Organization, I can honestly say the company does not portray the mannerism of leadership set forth in this book. The book is a motivational tool set for individuals chasing a non-reality dream, which allows Mr. Trump to once again market himself as a money making guru. However all the objectives in the book are intended for people who have already established financial security, it is not a lesson on "How to Get Rich"!

                                  5 out of 5 stars A very inspiring read!.......2007-05-31

I truly enjoyed Donald Trump's views on "how to get rich" - after all, his success is great proof!!

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title and no end to the boasting.......2007-05-18

This book won't make you rich. It reflects Trumps personal business philosophy and is quite an interesting, sincere and fast paced read. The book is flawed by a misleading title and Trump's constant bragging. Is it worth a read? Yes, it is.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Not a useful book.......2007-02-12

This book isn't going to be useful for someone looking to use it as a guide to get rich. I doubt Donald Trump even wrote this book. It reads like a book written by a ghost writer giving out simple cliches with no actual substance behind them. Very dissapointing.

3 out of 5 stars Buried Gifts and Gems!.......2007-01-22

Donald Trump is one of the most unique figures in our nation's modern business history. He is a BRAND MACHINE and he utilizes the brand 'The Donald' to his advantage by giving us one great book (Art of the Deal) a few years ago with some quick reads to get us thinking and have a little fun in the process. This book is of course the latter.

'How to Get Rich' is not a soup-to-nuts read on how to get rich, yet there are some buried gifts and gems that if you keep your eyes open, you may want to underline and reference from time-to-time regardless if you are a business leader or aspire to be a business leader. Throughout the pages of this book, he has such time-tested leadership advice sprinkled throughout with some points for the entrepeneur/business leader to keep in mind. I will point out a few that I enjoyed and you will likely find useful as well:

                                  - "Keep the big picture in mind while attending to the daily details";
                                  - Remain viligent by staying sharp in your field;
                                  - Hire a great assistant - so true; a great assistant can really make your life so much easier;
                                  - Staying stubborn;
                                  - Holding a grudge (when necessary);
                                  - Letting your guard down as a negotiating tool to your advantage

There are other gems buried within this book and as most of the time, Donald is entertaining. Some sections of the book will bring to mind Jack Welch with a splash (actually a heavy dose) of humor.

This is not a book about getting rich per say, but there are treasures of advice and wisdom buried that if you have time on a Sunday afternoon, you may want to type and paste to your wall or time-keeper.

The 3-star review is based on expectations of what many of us have come to expect from a Donald Trump post 'Art of the Deal' read. It is not a must read nor would I recommend this book if you are looking for some meat-and-potatoes of getting rich - you will only get frustrated (very, very frustrated). However, if you like The Donald brand and his tactic (thus his title) -- have some fun, dig out the gems of wisdom, and keep near the table in your front office -- it beats putting out old, dated copies of 'Sports Illustrated.'
