    Book Description

How is it that the foot and the toes are credited with such strong sexual connotations? Do they represent something out of the ordinary to the human subconcious? How otherwise could these unremarkable parts of the body seem erotic? And what has their appeal to do with the Eternal Mystery that is Woman?

Often left uncovered, in former times when total nudity was forbidden or considered unseemly, the foot and its shape allowed the imaginations of observers to roam wild. The only part of the body occasionally visible (unlike those visible normally or those never visible normally), it inevitably became a symbol for the whole body, as fantasized.

These are the questions that Hans-Jurgen Dopp here applies himself, supporting his conclusions with a remarkable collection of rare illustrations.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely dreadful, avoid it.......2005-06-16

You may have noticed, as I have, that people seem reluctant to review fetish material on Amazon. Justifiably so. Well, this "Kid" has taken it upon himself to review some foot fetish books he's picked up on Amazon for the benefit of those considering ordering them.

This book is absolutely awful. Clocking in at about 50 pages, it is mostly pictures of details from paintings of the Victorian era, classical Japan and a few bizarre modern ones. Dopp includes a few paragraphs about the history of the concept of fetish, only about half of which pertains to foot fetish...and in this scant material he devotes most of that to a discussion of his opinion that the classical German author Goethe was a foot fetishist. My goodness, this is so interesting.

Beware of the PUBLISHER'S claim that the book is full of enjoyable illustrations. I found myself turning the pages angrily in hopes that there might actually be SOME erotic pictures of female feet. For some inexplicable reason, the author chose mostly pictures of women lying prone with a focus on their lower bodies, or of fully-clothed women in boots sitting on windowsills.

I should have expected no less from a German. Don't get me wrong, I am half German, but as fetishists they're known to delve into the bizarre and esoteric. This is by NO MEANS a book, in my opinion, that will interest any modern American foot fetishist, whether his/her interest lie in the erotic image of the bare foot or in the nature of the fetish itself.

More highly recommended is "Foot: A Playful Biography," which this "Kid" has also reviewed. Or just google "bare female feet" and you might be happier.

5 out of 5 stars More fun with the "Peanuts" gang.......2001-12-30

"Make Way for the King of the Jungle," by Charles M. Schulz, is a delightful collection of comic strips featuring the author's popular "Peanuts" characters. Many of the recurrent themes and motifs of the series are here: Snoopy's fantasy of being a World War I flying ace, the kite-eating tree, Linus' security blanket and his obsession with the Great Pumpkin, Lucy's psychiatric stand, etc.

In the course of this book we get to experience both Christmas and Valentine's day with the "Peanuts" gang. There are a lot of antics involving Snoopy and his pal Woodstock. But my favorite extended storyline in the book involves Charlie Brown's decision to quit school in order to devote himself to making Snoopy happy. Anyone who has ever been devoted to a pet should be able to relate to this funny but tender plot.

"Peanuts" has always been a successful blend of humor and gentle philosophy, and that is true of this volume. "Make Way" is a treat for fans of Schulz's work.

5 out of 5 stars Charles Schulz brings to us again wonderful Peanuts humor........1998-12-06

Except, this time the individual comic strips are packed with compressed humor. This book has many diferrent incidents in which Snoopy is often the central character. Featuring in this book is/are Charlie Brown's infamous base ball team, the World Famous Surgeon(Snoopy), and of course, Woodstock: "King of the Jungle"! This book is a good book for anyone of any age. It is fun and lighthearted. I also recommend Charls M. Schulz's "Being a Dog is a Full Time Job." The only thing wrong with this book is that it is not long enough! I also recommend any other Schultz "Peanuts" book.

The title, as Dave Barry admits, is not entirely accurate. To be sure, this collection of articles does contain what the Pulitzer-Prize-winning author calls "an unusually high (for me) level of factual content." But there is also an abundance of goofy reportage, fart jokes (see "It's A Gas"), and Barry's long-overdue thoughts on natural childbirth.

      Book Description

You can't make this stuff up! Dave Barry would never lie--and here are the real life, laugh-out-loud stories from across America to prove it: a U.S. Supreme Court justice shares his remedy for preventing gas ("I had not realized that this was a matter of concern in the highest levels of government"); a newspaper headline in Ohio announces the combustibility of strawberry Pop-Tarts ("A story that can really help you gain a better understanding of how you can be killed by breakfast snack food"); the frightening fact that snakes have mastered the pipelines leading directly to your toilet--and they're not shy ("Many women might view this as a fair punishment for all the billions of times that guys have left the seat up").

So get up-close with Dave as he swears to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth . . . so God help you!

A collection of amusing anecdotes from the American writer, humorist and columnist Dave Barry. He finds all sorts of weird, crazy, stupid and funny stuff that people do, say or come up with all across the United States of America, and puts them into print.

Dave doesn't mind a drop of the droll, Dave doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars comedy at its best.......2007-08-28

I have read nearly all of Dave's books, and it never ceases to amaze me that he can be hilarious on each and every occasion. He doesn't duplicate any annecdotes, he simply uses his comic genius to make up new ones.. you will never be bored with Dave's ability to make you rush to the toilet to save wetting the floor, or laughing so hard you feel sick, and the back of your head hurts. This book is my favourite. Every story is funny, clever, and even sometimes sentimental. Please buy this one, you won't regret it. He's on top form.

Sorry, my husband and I listened to this for quite a bit and did not find it funny at all and didn't even want to continue listening to it, it just seemed long and boring--I guess we have a different sense of humor than most of the other reviewers.

4 out of 5 stars Unique sense of humor and easy reading.......2007-05-24

This is an incredibly funny writer who is able to dramatise everyday events into a comical prose. Dave Barry had me laughing out loud in public places with some of the essays in this book. The only thing I would say is that this is one of those books that you can't read cover to cover...you need to take a break now and then before jumping back in.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Barry is one funny dude!.......2007-02-21

Dave Barry is one of my favorite columnists ever, and I was deeply saddened by his decision to retire. Luckily, he has all these great collections of his past articles, and this is the first one I've read. He has so many seemingly random things to write about, and every one of them is absolutely hilarious. A particular favorite of mine is how he speculates on how he could make it rich quick by writing a John Grisham-esque legal novel. His parody of that style of book is a riot, especially since I'm familiar with some of those books. Other highlights include an article about loud obnoxious passengers on airplanes, a poll on the worst songs ever recorded, and several narratives about his expeditions on his not-so-trusty boat Buster. A must-have for humor enthusiasts everywhere.

              3 out of 5 stars Cool movies . . . O.K. book.......2005-10-29

Writing a review for this book is tough. All in all, it's an ok book that would please B-Movie fans, horror addicts or Cult Cinema experts. But there's one thing I dislike about this book. The write ups are too detailed without much auxillary info. Every last detail is described to the letter, but then the chapter ends with a few remarks and behind the scenes info.
Now as I said, it's tough to bad mouth this book because who knows why there isn't alot of extra info. Maybe the publisher didn't want it, maybe not much info's available on these movies, maybe the author had a different reason ... who knows.
The simple fact is that "Screaming Skull" is two pages long, while "Teen Werewolf" is 6(maybe more) pages long and both are 95 percent plot summaries. Also, what makes "Teen Werewolf" obscure? Why isn't "Return of Dracula" here? I'm only 25, but I knew about "TW" when Landon was doing Highway to Heaven, whereas I never heard of "ROD" till a few months back.

So basically, for learning about some cool movies and what they're about, get this book. For a really good horror movie book, check out Universal Horrors by Brunas, Brunas and Weaver or Poverty Row Horrors by Weaver

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference of B-Movies.......2003-01-23

Like many members of my generation I grew up up watching classic science fiction and horror films Saturday afternoons on such television shows as Creature Double Feature and Shock Theater, which has lead to a life long love of the B-Movies from the fifties. And with today's technology I get to see them in such clarity that put my UHF memories to shame.

Now Fantasma Books brings the perfect companion piece to lovers of the genre, Sleaze Creatures: An Illustrated Guide to Obscure Hollywood Horror Movies From 1956 to 1959, written by D. Earl Worth. And at just under $... retail this book is worth every penny.

Everyone of the 256 pages are packed full of information from some of the best known films (I Was A Teenage Werewolf) to some of the worst films ever produced (Attack of the Giant Leeches). This volume covers fifty films with cast and crew filmographies, production histories, detailed synopsis and trivia for each of the films covered. Plus there are 150 black-and-white photographs, production stills and original movie posters throughout the entire text.

Any fan of the B-Movies would absolutely treasure this book. The only thing that could possibly make it better is having the films to watch after reading all about them. And thanks to many fine video and DVD companies you they are available to you.

                  Book Description

For many performers, stage life and real life are separate identities. For master illusionist Harry Houdini, the two were inextricably linked. In this widely acclaimed biography, Ruth Brandon shows how Houdini’s obsession with his own mortality drove him to create death-defying stunts that not only captivated the public but also subdued his own raging psychological demons.

As Brandon relates Houdini’s methods of escape, she asks: What was he trying to escape from? Her exploration of the psychic landscape of one of the most enduringly famous performers of the twentieth century makes for utterly fascinating reading. Brandon reveals much that is new: how Houdini invented a phantom son; why he wrote long daily letters to his wife, Bess, who lived one floor below him; his combative relations with mediums and spiritualists, including Arthur Conan Doyle; and the first full description of his fabled death. This definitive biography allows readers to peer into Houdini’s psyche and understand him more deeply than ever before.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble.......2006-11-24

As a previous reviewer stated, there are plenty of other good bios of Houdini. This one is full of psychobabble and reads like character assassination. All heroes have feet of clay, but her analysis is repetitive and makes the second half of the book deathly boring.

                  4 out of 5 stars A good book, but..........2005-01-03

Overall, an enjoyable read, but I agree with prior reviewers -- too much Freudian analysis for my taste, and I don't care to hear the author's personal experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly Suggested Book.......2003-02-05

This book is good. It has many interesting facts about Houdini. It explains his life and career. I strongly suggest it.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but there are better.......2000-06-13

If you're planning on buying just one Houdini book, go with Kenneth Silverman. Although there are parts of Brandon's book which are excellent, I grew tired of her opinions and psycho-babble. Ultimately, I got the feeling that the author simply didn't like Houdini. Perhaps I should have been warned when reading Brandon's bio: "She likes to think of biography as a framework within which to look at cultural history." Houdini was a complex person, to say the least. Personally, I'd rather be presented with the facts so I could form my own opinion.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2000-03-26

I've read every biography on Harry Houdini and this one is good...but it isn't the best. (The best is Ken Silverman's Houdini! The Career of Ehrich Weiss.) Here Ruth Brandon has mined information from older Houdini bios and created a skillful patchwork. Even her much publicized (and much maligned) "psycho-babble" comes right out of Bernard C. Meyer's Houdini A Mind in Chains (1976). Indeed, this excellent long out-of-print book seems to be Ms. Brandon's Deep Throat. Her chapter relating the events leading up to Houdini's death is taken almost paragraph for paragraph from the Meyer book. And do we really need to hear about the author's own childhood experiences with magic? Still, it's a good read, but for a serious and truly revealing Houdini bio, go with the Silverman book.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory guide.......2004-12-30

I felt this book was reasonably priced and offered a wide array of helpful fundraising advice -- especially for the small to mid-sized nonprofit. It covers a lot of the basics in a writing style that is pleasant to read.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-10-19

I'm not a professional fundraiser, but I plan to become involved in nonprofits, and this book was great! I know of some nonprofits that get all of their money from corporate donations and then complain about not having enough money. This isn't the way to do it, according to Ms. Flanagan. In order to be a successful fundraiser, you need to ask, ask, ask, and you need to provide many different ways for different people to give. Flanagan goes into many aspects of the game, including how to send follow up letters, when to ask, how often to ask, and different ways of making it easy to get big gifts. I especially liked the way she talks about the psychology of rich people and poor people, and how both tend to give in different ways. She tells us never to make decisions for givers--just ask, present them with the different options, and let them decide. Great advice.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get involved with charity. The marginal profit from the first day will probably cover the cost of this book many times over.

Successful Fundraising is a great resource for non-profit agencies! It is very easy to read, straightforward, and actually a fun read too! Joan gives great examples and stories to illustrate her points.

I recently had the opportunity to attend one of Joan's courses - and she is just as wonderful and helpful in person. She presents the daunting tasks of fundraising in simple language, common sense and humor.

This book should be the "bible" of every non-profit fundraiser!
