Book Description
John Entenza (1903-1984) was one of the pivotal figures in the growth of modernism in California. During his editorship, the magazine ARTS & ARCHITECTURE championed all that was new in the arts, with special emphasis on emerging modernist architecture in Southern California. Entenza's most lasting contribution was his sponsorship of the Case Study Houses project, which featured the works of architects such as Charles Eames, Craig Ellwood, Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra and William Wurster. ARTS & ARCHITECTURE also ran articles and interviews on artists and designers such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, George Nakashima, George Nelson and many other ground-breakers.

Book Description
This anthology brings together seminal articles from one of America's most distinguished architecture magazines, copies of which are now extremely difficult to locate. Published and edited by John Entenza from 1938 until 1962, when he left to direct the Graham Foundation, Arts & Architecture played a significant role both in Los Angeles's cultural history and in the development of American modernism in general. Arts & Architecture was the first American magazine to popularize the work of Hans Hofmann, Craig Ellwood, Margaret DePatta, George Nakashima, Bernard Rosenthal, Charles Eames, Konrad Wachsmann, and many others. It also embodied the highest standard of graphic design attained by an American art magazine of its time, employing the talents of such designers as Alvin Lustig, Herbert Mattes, and John Follis.
Arts & Architecture: The Entenza Years maintains the large format of the magazine and includes many fullscale reproductions of the original pages. It brings together articles from the years 1943 through 1959, publishing them exactly as they appeared. In keeping with Entenza's tireless advocacy of modernism in all its aspects, the articles cover design, architecture, photography, music, and visual arts. They explore the culture that led to the famous Case Study House program, and feature industrialized and postwar tract housing, as well as houses designed by the Case Study House architects during the same era as the program. There is an introduction by the editor Barbara Goldstein and an essay on John Entenza by Esther McCoy, who wrote for Arts & Architecture through most of Entenza's period as editor.
Barbara Goldstein is Planning Coordinator for the Los Angeles Endowment for the Arts, a program of the City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Department. She was publisher and editor-in-chief of Arts & Architecture magazine from 1981 to 1985.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A compilation of the issues of Miller's introduction of the character of Elektra Natchios, a woman that could easily have been the star of a Robert Ludlum novel. That is, if there were not so many of those damned ninjas running around.
A woman that is an old girlfriend of Matt's comes back into his life, and makes it very complicated.
a really great comic work..........2006-12-28
the only gripe i have about this is it feels like it should be part of a larger, longer story. or maybe its just because you don't want it to end. at any rate this is a great graphic novel, featuring top class writing and artwork.
Embrace innovative art in comics!.......2006-06-16
The 80s saw comics take a turn for the better - stories improved and became darker and more adult; real artists brought innovative styles to bear on a medium long held back by stereotypical drawing (both penciling and inking) and coloring.
Sienkiewicz won a Kirby Award for his work on 'Electra Assassin,' but his art is fairly avant garde for the comic scene. He actually does the covers as oil paintings instead of drawings to be filled in by a colorist, and you'd swear many of the panels on the inside are also painted. And his art is amazing - it runs the gamut from psychotic and blood splattered to portraiture perfection with lots of interesting stops in between.
Of course, Frank Miller's story is no slouch either, with corruption, conspiracy, insanity, etc. It's also a bit postmodern in narrative form, so, if you feel confused at times, keep reading - most knots untangle by the end, and those that don't? - well, they weren't supposed to. His work typically reaches above that of a medium too long constrained to tepid super-hero triumphs (he did, after all, bring us 'The Dark Knight' and 'Ronin').
In 'Electra,' art and story come together in a potent combination that makes a great comic. Forget the movie and read this instead!
How Elektra should be done!.......2006-02-17
I loved this graphic novel. It was dirty, gritty, and mean. It holds nothing back. It was under a new Marvel comic that didn't go by the 'comic code' so it got down in the mud the blood and the beer. First some people that I know were really turned off by the art in that it is not your usual comic book art and I believe is done completely in water colors. I liked it. It was different and really cool. Elektra is portrayed as she should be and not like that midwestern farm girl with huge lips played her in the movie. She is a Greek assassin. She is found in a mental institution and it deals with her past and how it warped her. It also deals with the real heavy subject of child abuse and of her demonic possession at the hands of the evil Ninja clan called The Hand. In the regular comic they didn't delve as much into the spiritual or demonic goings on in her resurection and her converting to the 'dark side'. In this one they go balls out and cover it all. And Elektra is not portrayed as the nicey nicey girl that said big lipped female Ben Affleck portrayed her. She is ruthless, cold, hard, tough and crazy. The use of Marvels S.H.I.E.L.D and Nick Fury is great. Also Elektras nemesis who later under her mental manipulation becomes her sidekick, the ex S.H.I.E.L.D agent who is now more machine than man but still has a foul mouth and dirty old man mind is great.
This book is not for everybody but if you want to see how the character was suppose to be before Hollywood chopped it up and turned it into junk. Give it a read. Its great.
Before you see the Jan 05 movie, read this........2005-01-05
Elektra Natchios, daughter of Greek Diplomat Hugo Natchios and his wife, Christina, has been a gymnast, martial artist, ninja, and assassin. Though she was a black belt by age twelve, trained in the lethal arts of Ninjitsu, and was renowned as the world's deadliest assassin, she is dead. Or is she really?
A strange woman has washed ashore off the coast of South America. No one can identify her. She does not have any finger prints to even help. When people, high in politics, begin dying it is clear that Elektra did NOT die after all. She has returned. But is she sane?
***** The story begins while Elektra is still in her mother's womb. Once born, the story is told mainly from Elektra's point-of-view. None of it makes much sense to the reader. Soon Special Agent John Garrett helps Elektra narrate. The reader then sees things happen from the point-of-view of Elektra and Garrett. Things still make little sense to the reader; however, a pattern begins to form and the reader can now piece a few things together.
Half way through this comic novel (over sized paperback), more characters begin to help narrate. Yet only one of the newer characters play a major role in clearing the air for the reader. That character is Agent Chastity McBryde, who seems almost as insane as Elektra. By the ending, the reader fully understands it all and is left utterly speechless!
If you plan to watch the January 2005 movie release "Elektra", read this first! Elektra is NOT a "super hero" and the movie does not try to portray her as one. Quit thinking "Dare Devil", "Spider Man", and/or "Batman". Elektra is totally unique. Even after reading this book I cannot say for sure whether Elektra is really sane! If you miss out on reading this comic novel, you miss out on most of who Elektra really is. *****

Par for the course........2002-02-13
This is the third of, at this point, five collections of entries to the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction contest, a contest in which the goal is to write the worst possible opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels.
Like all of the others of its kind, this book is tremendously enjoyable for those who find amusement in the intentional lampooning of bad writing. I must say that I found it the least amusing of the lot, but that still leaves it a marvellously funny romp. Well worth the effort of tracking down a copy.
Laugh-out-loud funny.......2000-05-13
Like all of the Dark and Stormy Night series, this is a collection of entries from a contest in which the aim is to write the worst opening sentence for a book.
Some rely on groanworthy puns, some on mixed metaphors, some on convoluted, endless sentences. The best ones are just bizarre. My favourite: "Ernest Hemingway had been his hero ever since he was belched out of his mother's angry, belligerent womb."

Customer Reviews:
Introduction.......2006-12-17
We used this book in my "Operations analysis"-class, and it's a great introduction to the subjects discussed. Some very basic probability for estimating values and descision theory. Some regression in addition to other forecasting methods. Good sections on linear and integer programming, and also basic queuing models. Markov analysis is about as far as this book goes, and it basically just touches upon all the subjects in order to make the reader grasp the basic ideas.
One minus is the Windows-only software, no Mac-support there, but that only meant that I had to use Excel, which imo helped me gain a better understanding of the subjects, as I had to formulate all the spreadsheets myself instead of just feeding numbers into the QM-package, which imo seems like a total waste of a chance to learn. Anyway, most areas are covered with respect to both QM and Excel, which makes the non-existant Mac-support bareable.
So Much Better Than The University Bookstore.......2006-11-10
Wow! This brand new book cost $50 less than the same new book at my university bookstore! It was even cheaper than buying a used version of the book from the bookstore. The shipping was so fast, it arrived at my house the day after I ordered it! I'll be looking on Amazon.com for all my future text book purchases!! :)
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2006-02-28
I read this book as the assigned text for a course in Quantitative Analysis and found it to be an excellent text for such a class. Each Model and equation presented is explained through realistic examples, illustrations, and explanations of the math. This made the subject very easy to comprehend and apply to the real world.
Exercises at the end of each chapter are also based on real-world situations and case studies are included in the book and the CD that go into more detail about a real world use for each model.
The book was also easy to read and not overly technical when explaining mathematic concepts. An excellent text for an introduction to the field of management science.
Book Description
Quantitative methods have revolutionized the area of trading, regulation, risk management, portfolio construction, asset pricing and treasury activities, and governmental activity such as central banking to name but some of the applications. Downside-risk, as a quantitative method, is an accurate measurement of investment risk, because it captures the risk of not accomplishing the investor's goal.
'Downside Risk in Financial Markets' demonstrates how downside-risk can produce better results in performance measurement and asset allocation than variance modelling. Theory, as well as the practical issues involved in its implementation, is covered and the arguments put forward emphatically show the superiority of downside risk models to variance models in terms of risk measurement and decision making. Variance considers all uncertainty to be risky. Downside-risk only considers returns below that needed to accomplish the investor's goal, to be risky.
Risk is one of the biggest issues facing the financial markets today. 'Downside Risk in Financial Markets' outlines the major issues for Investment Managers and focuses on "downside-risk" as a key activity in managing risk in investment/portfolio management. Managing risk is now THE paramount topic within the financial sector and recurring losses through the 1990s has shocked financial institutions into placing much greater emphasis on risk management and control.
Free Software Enclosed
To help you implement the knowledge you will gain from reading this book, a CD is enclosed that contains free software programs that were previously only available to institutional investors under special licensing agreement to The pension Research Institute. This is our contribution to the advancement of professionalism in portfolio management.
The Forsey-Sortino model is an executable program that:
1. Runs on any PC without the need of any additional software.
2. Uses the bootstrap procedure developed by Dr. Bradley Effron at Stanford University to uncover what could have happened, instead of relying only on what did happen in the past. This is the best procedure we know of for describing the nature of uncertainty in financial markets.
3. Fits a three parameter lognormal distribution to the bootstrapped data to allow downside risk to be calculated from a continuous distribution. This improves the efficacy of the downside risk estimates.
4. Calculates upside potential and downside risk from monthly returns on any portfolio manager.
5. Calculates upside potential and downside risk from any user defined distribution.
Forsey-Sortino Source Code:
1. The source code, written in Visual Basic 5.0, is provided for institutional investors who want to add these calculations to their existing financial services.
2. No royalties are required for this source code, providing institutions inform clients of the source of these calculations. A growing number of services are now calculating downside risk in a manner that we are not comfortable with. Therefore, we want investors to know when downside risk and upside potential are calculated in accordance with the methodology described in this book.
Riddles Spreadsheet:
1. Neil Riddles, former Senior Vice President and Director of Performance Analysis at Templeton Global Advisors, now COO at Hansberger Global Advisors Inc., offers a free spreadsheet in excel format.
2. The spreadsheet calculates downside risk and upside potential relative to the returns on an index
Brings together a range of relevant material, not currently available in a single volume source
Provides practical information on how financial organisations can use downside risk techniques and technological developments to effectively manage risk in their portfolio management
Provides a rigorous theoretical underpinning for the use of downside risk techniques. This is important for the long-run acceptance of the methodology, since such arguments justify consultant's recommendations to pension funds and other plan sponsors
Customer Reviews:
Good book but software demo needs improvement........2007-09-04
This book does a good job of describing the flaws with Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) as well as the proposed solution resulting in Post-MPT (Ch 1 and 4). The Visual Basic software demonstrates Post-MPT risk analysis of a single asset. I would have rated it a 5 if the software had demonstrated Post-MPT asset allocation among multiple assets. As it stands I have a choice of EITHER reverse engineering the software/spreadsheet and adding multiple assets OR purchasing third party software.
Not a book for the average Consumer .......2007-07-07
As a financial planner here in the midwest, I'm always looking to improve my business and the way I manage portfolios. For years I've always adhered to the capital asset pricing methods and Bill Sharpe's work in designing investment portfolios. So after looking for a better mousetrap, I found the Sortino Ratio. I was thinking this book -like many others in the investment realm- would be "dumbed-down" and written for a large scale audience----just the opposite. You better brush up on your math skills. It doesn't take you down a road of how to create/manage the risk in portfolios; it's really for large scale management. The formulas are on every other page. (I'm being facetious, but not too far fetched.) If you're a CFA or maybe a CIMA, you might want to have this on your shelf of reference materials; if you're the average planner dealing with mom and pop day-to-day issues, stick with Sharpe. (If you're a consumer looking to manage your portfolio using this book- you've got either way too much time on your hands or some real OCD issues.)(The CD included is somewhat worthless.) *I'm still going to try and develop portfolios using this method, but need a company like Morningstar to wrap it up in a software package.)
Doesnt Help Individual Investors.......2006-06-18
Like 99% of all books written on the stock market, this one does very little to help the efforts of individual investors. Rather, it is more applicable to funds and money managers, who have much different investment needs and styles. Individual investors need to understand how to determine business risk rather than liquidity risk or beta, which is usually the only kind of risk fund managers look at. Individual investors need to learn technical analysis (which fund managers do not look at typically) and they need to understand market sentiment. Finally, individual investors need to learn how to determine relative valuation--no not valuation methods that analysts go by--most of those are useless and they never consider downside risk. These are the keys to managing risk. I gave the book an average rating only because teaching risk management (and I mean practical risk management) is a very difficult task that I am not sure can be accomplished in a single book. It most certainly cannot be taught in a 270 page book. Most likely, the high price is a reflection of the audience---fund managers who pay for these expensive books with funds made by fund companies for doing nothing more than buy-and-hold.
Excellent Treatment of Risk/Return - A Must Read.......2002-12-05
Though the book is quite pricey, it delivers a wealth of information regarding various treatments of risk and return. This is not the stuff you find in most financial texts, such as outdated modern portfolio theory. In fact, the material is far beyond the old risk/return traditions of yore. Various authors each contribute a chapter including Sortino so one gets a wide range of views (I only found a few chapters irrelevant to my needs). However, the common theme throughout is, "It is high time to view risk/return in a more meaningful and practical light."
This text is not just for portfolio managers. Anyone involved in risk/return assessment will benefit from the material; though much of the book is intended for those with a mathematical slant. The material can easily be applied to discounted cash flow (DCF) financial modeling though this is not discussed in the text. In my opinion, it blows away VAR, Real Options, etc.
If you ever thought T-Bills were riskless assts, you need to read this book or be forever wrong. I also found a wealth of information on Sortino's website that complimented the text. Lastly, each chapter is chocked full of nice reference articles for those desiring to delve deeper into the multitude of ideas presented.
