    Book Description

With the eye of a painter and the freedom of a photographer, Guy Bourdin created images full of fascinating stories, compositions, and colors. Using fashion and fashion photography as his vehicle, he explored the realms between the absurd and the sublime, taking cues from the theater and Surrealism. Along the way he became famous for his suggestive narratives and fantastic aesthetics--he broke conventions of commercial photography with a relentless perfectionism and sharp humor. Given total creative freedom, Bourdin captured the imagination of a generation. The late 1970s, recognized as the highest note in Bourdin's career, are the focal point of this two-volume edition. Volume I is dedicated to the legendary, nearly forgotten images he made with Nicolle Meyer as his model, and to their rarely seen variants. Meyer appeared in over 30 of his famous campaigns for Charles Jourdan and in iconic French Vogue editorials. Volume II is a road trip through Bourdin's visual landscape, a collage of images mapping his artistic search and vision. Texts, Polaroids, poems, sketches and contact sheets unfold in time with Nicolle Meyer's memories, and inscribe moments of Bourdin's working process that would otherwise be lost. To this day, Guy Bourdin, remains an enigma, and he leaves a provocative and compelling legacy. A Message for You examines that oeuvre and, perhaps more importantly, it provides insight into the complex workings of the photographer's mind.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bourdin book focusing on Nicolle Meyer.......2007-09-24

This book (or books, since it is 2 volumes together) consists mainly of Bourdin's photos of Nicolle Meyer, taken between 1977 and 1980.

Volume I has 75 color photos, and each one has its own page. Each photo is only about half the size of the page, but having said that, none of them seem too small. They all seem about the right size and fit well with the feel of the book. Almost every photo contains Nicolle in one form or another, which is definitely not a bad thing, because she is a beautiful woman and a great subject.

Volume II has 133 pages. Most of them are photos, but some of them are text. The text tells about Bourdin, Nicolle Meyer, and the process that went into the photographs, among other things. The size of the photos varies more in Volume II than in Volume I. Some photos are the full size of the page, and sometimes there are multiple small images on one page. There aren't quite as many photos of Nicolle in this volume, but she is still the primary model.

I am not very familiar with Bourdin's other books, but in my opinion, this is a must-have for any fan of Bourdin. Both volumes are beautifully packaged and contain a box to keep them together. I can't say for sure, but I would assume that there are a lot of photographs in this album that are difficult to find anywhere else. One of my favorite photography books.

    Book Description

One of the Greatest Innovators of Fashion Photography;New Book Provides the Perfect IntroductionTo a Legendary Career.Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) was one of the world's greatest innovators offashion photography. While his contemporaries Richard Avedon and HelmutNewton achieved great notoriety and fame, Bourdin remains relativelyunknown to the general public. But within the worlds of fashion andphotography, he is a legend.Known for his difficult personality andgroundbreaking images that mixed glamour, seduction and surrealism, theimpact of Bourdin's work on both commercial and fine art photographycontinues to resonate today. GUY BOURDIN, by Guggenheim curator Alison M. Gingeras, provides anillustrated overview of Bourdin's entire career featuring both iconicimages, lesser-known photos and an introductory essay that provides a freshperspective on his life and work, 15 years after his death. Guy Bourdin worked for French Vogue for over 30 years where he demanded andwas allowed full editorial control of his work.During the 1970's and1980's, his photographs also filled the pages of international fashionmagazines in campaigns for Charles Jourdan, Bloomingdales, Versace, Chaneland Dior.Bourdin's approach to advertising campaigns reflected a distinctchange in this period by rejecting the product shot' in favor ofatmospheric, often surreal tableaux and suggestions of narrative.Bourdinwas not alone in demystifying the object, but he was the most radical inhis approach. Gingeras' accessible introduction looks back on Bourdin's career and placeshim both in the context of his time and within the history of photography. She reveals that it's no accident that he is not a household name todaybecause "during his lifetime, Bourdin refused to exhibit or sell hisfashion photographs as autonomous prints...turning down offers to publishmonographic studies of his work."The only "book" he ever made was alingerie catalogue for Bloomingdales in 1976.By the time he died Bourdinsucceeded in guaranteeing the anonymity he always wanted. But now, yearslater, his influence reigns on.In a recent The New York Times article, fashion writer Tim Blanks said, "Bourdin makes more sense now than he did20 years ago... (he) had a scarily acute understanding of the heart ofdarkness that pulsates under society's glossy exterior." There are numerous previously unpublished photos in Phaidon's GUY BOURDIN,in particular early works that were discovered in the Bourdin personalarchive. The book succeeds in filling out the formative years of Bourdin'soeuvre as well as celebrating his most iconic images. Guy Bourdin's fashion shoots were mysterious, hypnotic, surreal, exposingthe true and unnerving nature of desire. He showed that, within thecontext of fashion, it is rarely the product that compels us.It is theimage - carefully staged narrative of sexual fantasy, the quest for theunattainable with a suggestion of danger - that stimulates consumerdesire.

5 out of 5 stars The dark side of fashion........2007-03-08

The genius of Bourdin was that he lived outside of the cutting edge. This is applicable to all humans because there are so many who don't care about the cutting edge but then there are always those who are running to that edge trying to stay with the trend no matter what it is, then of course there are voyeurs like Bourdin who live outside of it with a certain timelessness. In contrast designers in fashion create the line where the edge is and everyone tries to plant a flag somewhere around there so they can belong. I think Bourdin really understood this concept. He especially illuminates this viewpoint by the amount of reality he injects into such a fairy tale world of beauty.

To press that point I enjoyed the contradiction of his work that really went the wrong way because one of his main motifs was death accompanied by extreme youthful ideals, which is the quintessence of life. His pictures really do their best to shovel reality onto the viewer--to drive a little uneasiness into your routine.

    Book Description

Guy Bourdin's surreal and erotic imagery filled the pages of international fashion magazines in the 1970s. His revolutionary ad campaign for Charles Jourdan shoes fascinated readers with photographs as provocative and edgy today as they were almost three decades ago. Bourdin's influence on modern photography is sweeping and far-reaching-yet he died in 1991 without ever having published a collection of his work. Now his son, Samuel Bourdin, working with creative director Fernando Delgado, has created this gorgeous overview of some of the finest images from his father's legacy. The powerful images are accompanied by a foreword by writer and critic Luc Sante, and a biographical essay by Michel Guerrin, photography critic of Le Monde.

5 out of 5 stars master of depraved-chic.......2002-03-03

Anyone who ever was blown away by the spectacularly original and outrageously suggestive fashion photographs of the notorious French and Italian editions of Vogue from the red-hot seventies....will savor this collection of legendary images by the twisted visionary master, Guy Bourdin. Mr. Bourdin, alongside Mr. Helmut Newton, changed what was acceptable as images to sell luxurious, overpriced designer products. They introduced imagry inspired by pornography, violent crime scenes, surrealism, pop art and film noir to high- fashion magazines and started a trend that will never go out.....even though the versions recreated today no longer have the style, taste or originality of these masters.....ironic, considering both these master image makers were considered "tasteless" by many subscribtion-cancellers at their peak of editorial dominance.
This book could have had better printing quality....and some actual magazine spreads could have been included....but overall, it documents and celebrates the art of a man who pushed the envelope creating images of extreme sophistication and style inspite of the shock value.

    5 out of 5 stars A great first collection........2001-11-27

This sample of Guy Bourdin's work is an interesting glimpse of some of his photographs. Little known in America, Bourdin was well known in the world of fashion photography and often copied by well known, popular photographers. This selection offers a taste of his work and a hint of what will follow in further releases of his photographs.

      Book Description

Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) created the most challenging fashion photography of the late 20th century. Over a 35-year career, including more than three decades creating confrontational images for French Vogue and groundbreaking campaigns for Charles Jourdan footwear, he staged complex dramas, with every gesture and prop carrying a potent psychological charge. He showed us that in the context of fashion it is rarely the product that compels us; it is the image--the seductive narratives of the commercial world, and the quest for the unattainable--that stirs our desires. Today, Bourdin stands as one of the most influential image-makers of all time.

Bourdin cultivated his anonymity, refusing all proposals for books and exhibitions during his lifetime. This volume, published to coincide with the first major exhibition of his photographs, showcases not only his fashion images but also his brooding landscapes and magical cityscapes. The photographs are accompanied by five specially commissioned essays, which together offer the first thorough analysis of Bourdin's unique creativity.

5 out of 5 stars How does a city work?.......2004-09-29

Apart from the Core DM-Guide this is the best sourcebook I've read so far. It gives a DM much needed help regarding questions like "How big is the city guard in an average town" or "how big has a town to be to plausibly entertain a thieves guild" (and how does it work). In general it tells You how to build a realistic city. It gives good and solid background on things like power-centres within a city, types of cities, their size depending where they grow and so on. It gives good rules on city andventures and city characters.
The graphics are... ok (Of course You easily become spoiled by the core-books) and I "missed" a chapter about "realistic" sewers in a fantastic/medieval city, as this is a part, where a lot of adventure takes place. Also a chapter about "arabic" towns with bazaars etc. would habe been an icing on the cake.
There is a lot on randomized city construction which I probably won't use a lot - but thats personal.
Summing up: You find a lot in this book which You don't find anywhere else, a really good buy, even if You use a different RPG-system.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for gamers AND writers........2003-12-18

This is quite possibly the best RPG supplement I've ever come across. Ever!

Well-written and logically laid-out, with more than enough to detail to spur the imagination in a million directions, but not so much that it constricts it. For DM/GMs, this is an invaluable resource for creating realistic, vibrant city-based campaigns that your players will love. For writers - particularly fantasy writers, natch - this is a MUST-HAVE for developing living, breathing cities that your readers will return to again and again.

[NOTE: The red cover seems to be from an earlier edition entitled Citycraft. This review applies to City Works, the blue-covered 2003 edition.]

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun! Very highly recommended.......2001-05-16

Robin Williams is only eleven years older than I am, so I guess you could say I grew up with him. Mork and Mindy were primary staple when I was in high school. So when I found THE ROBIN WILLIAMS SCRAPBOOK on sale, I couldn't resist. And in only the first couple of pages, I knew it was a bargain at any price.

Intersperses with the necessary "place of birth" type information, Stephen Spignesi recounts Williams' life from the perspective of Williams' body of work. The book's chapters each represent Williams' work in chronological order as it relates to his life. Written in an engaging, immediate tone, the reader can't help becoming a part of the flow of the text, and the "legalized insanity" of William's life.

As I read, the book's humane, honest, and humorous tidbits that kept my emotions engaged. Learning of Williams' support of actor Christopher Reeve following the accident), his perchance for sexual humor and play, and his favorite joke. Filled with photos, stories of performances, and peaks into his personal life, THE ROBIN WILLIAMS SCRAPBOOK is a fascinating, must read for Williams fans. Very Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very informative book, with great photos........1999-03-08

I recommend this book to anyone who likes Robin Williams. It is very well written, with lots of great pictures - and not just the ones that you always see. The book deals with a lot of what Robin has done on stage and on television, as well as his movie career. It also has chapters on Comic Relief, several interviews, and even a puzzle.

These are some of the things I really enjoyed in this book:
The highlights from An Evening With Robin Williams and the summary of An Evening at the Met.
The short descriptions of all the Mork and Mindy episodes, and the extensive summaries of the very first episode and the episode called Mork Meets Robin Williams.
The account of Mad Magazine's parody of Mork and Mindy: Shmork and Windy.
          The long, interesting interviews.
The comments to each of Robin's movies, from Popeye in 1980 to Hamlet in 1997. First Spignesi says what the movie is about, and what he thinks, then comes what the critics said. Often we also get to hear something Robin said about the movie.
(This review is part of my comment on the book on my homepage.)

5 out of 5 stars Best book available on the Funniest Man Alive!.......1999-01-27

Steve's really done a great job with this book. It covers anything and everything you could ever want to know on Robin's work up to "Hamlet." Lots of great photos, too. If you're a fan of Robin, a fan of one of his films, or just like movies in general, this is a fabulous book to have.

Most pool and billiard experts would rather surrender the secrets of their sex lives than share a useful tip or system. These books coaxed many such tips from a global source of experts. All on how and why to get a cue ball from one place to another....a cornucopia study book for years and years to come.

                  5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2001-09-26

This is an ultimate and indispensable guide to 3-cushion players. All four books of this series are full of precious formulas and tips many of which were secret to amateurs. Systematic and pin-pointed explanations and diagrams are incredible. This series should not stop here.

My boyfriend plays semi-pro pool. I have a college degree and an understanding of the basic fundamentals of pool. Between the two of us we could not make heads or tails or this book. This is not the place for anyone without a mathematics degree to look for help on improving their game.

2 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2000-03-11

I would consider myself an advanced beginner. This book is definitely over my level of play. Unless you are close to an advanced player or have an instructor to help understand this book, I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Rich at last........1997-12-07

....in my ten years as an instructor, and 24 years as a player. These books will make a difference not only in 3-cushion, but all disciplines, and improve my own way of instruction.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Essentials Manager's Toolkit: 13 Skills Managers Need to Succeed.......2007-06-10

The Manager's Toolkit, was an appropriate title for this book. This is not the kind of book that you sit down and read cover to cover over a couple of evenings and pass along to a friend. I conceptualize it more like a file cabinet that sits on my bookshelf containing files on best practices and resources for managers.

The file cabinet is organized into three drawers- (1.) Learning the Basics (2.) Reaching the Next Level and (3.) Mastering the Financial Tools. As things come up in my business, I reach into the appropriate file drawer and pull out the applicable files to review on the subject. [...]

The book has been useful to me in running my business in several ways over the past couple of months. In the first file drawer, Learning The Basics, I pulled out the file on Characteristics of Effective Goals to help me facilitate groups of stakeholders involved in setting goals for their organizations. I also pulled the file on Defining Job Requirements which had helpful questions to help me write a job description for a new position in my company.

In the second file drawer on Reaching the Next Level the file on Managing Teams was helpful for me to better understand how managing a team requires a different management strategies than those needed for more traditional hierarchal forms of management. I also pulled the file on What is Strategy? to help me in coaching a new manager in my organization on how to develop her first strategic plan for her branch of the company.

In the third file drawer, Mastering The Financial Tools, I found the Tips for Setting Assumptions on pg. 229 to be helpful in coaching a manager on how to create financial projections.

In the future I will probably pull different files depending on what types of management challenges I encounter. The book is laid out in a logical way with descriptive chapter titles making it easy to find what you are looking for. It is nice to know I have all of these resources at my fingertips.

Senior managers may want to consider getting a copy of this book for new managers they oversee to give them a quick overview of best practices on a wide variety of topics they are likely to encounter in their new positions. The book is well worth the space it will occupy on your bookshelf in your office.

I honestly can't belive this qualifies as a book. Sure, Harvard is a excellent school. However, don't let this book fool you.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most valuable volume in the series...........2005-01-18

This is one of the volumes in the new Harvard Business Essentials Series. Each offers authoritative answers to the most important questions concerning its specific subject. The material in this book is drawn from a variety of sources which include the Harvard Business School Press and the Harvard Business Review as well as Harvard ManageMentor®, an online service. I strongly recommend the official Harvard Business Essentials Web site (www.elearning.hbsp.org/businesstools) which offers free interactive versions of tools, checklists, and worksheets cited in this book and other books in the Essentials series. Each volume is indeed "a highly practical resource for readers with all levels of experience." And each is by intent and in execution solution-oriented. Although I think those who have only recently embarked on a business career will derive the greatest benefit, the material is well-worth a periodic review by senior-level executives.

Credit Richard Luecke with pulling together a wealth of information and counsel from various sources. He is also the author of several other books in the Essentials series. In this instance, he was assisted by a subject advisor, Christopher Bartlett, the Thomas D. Casserly, Jr. Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Together, they have carefully organized the material as follows. Part I "addresses five basic but essential skills needed to build the the foundation of a powerful and high-performing manager" (e.g. setting goals that others will pursue). Part II moves on to more challenging skills (e.g. creating and supervising effective team-based initiatives). Then in Part III, Luecke and Bartlett focus on the specific financial tools that every mid- to higher-level manager should understand and learn to apply (e.g. budgeting, the ability to read and interpret financial statements, net present analysis and internal rate of return). I also urge readers to pay close attention to the "For Further Reading" section which can be found at the end of this book. In it, they are provided with references to recent books and articles -- many of them "classics" -- which offer additional material and unique insights into the various topics covered in the previous 16 chapters. I especially appreciate the "Key Topics Covered in This Chapter" and "Summing Up" sections which precede and follow each of the chapters.

Luecke and Bartlett are to be commended for covering such a wide range of subjects and for doing so in depth. For most executives as well as for those now embarked on preparation for a career in business, this may well prove to be the single most valuable volume in the Harvard Business Essentials Series.
