Book Description
This delightful book presents hundreds of entertaining caricatures of celebrities from popular American periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century. Employing a vivid new type of portraiture based on modern design and a preoccupation with personality- based fame, master caricaturists filled the pages of newspapers and magazines with renderings of Mae West, George Gershwin, the Marx Brothers, Babe Ruth, Mussolini, and other personalities of their times.

A STUNNING OVERVIEW OF 20TH CENTURY CARICATURES.......1998-04-24
This is the best single overview of 20th Century American caricature I have ever seen. The quality of the reproductions is outstanding and a good many of the items herein are not available in other books. The book's cutoff point appears to be the Fifties; it would have been nice to have had some more recent examples by artists such as Edward Sorel, but perhaps the newer people are adequately covered in other books. Anyone interested in caricature cannot do without this book.

Delightful read!.......2007-08-10
I had the wonderful experience of meeting Ms. Heidi a couple of years ago at one of her fashion history presentation (Hollywood hats, on that particular occasion). Ms. Heidi, who was an apprentice to Hollywood designer Edith Head, presents an interesting history of fashion with this little book. While it is a brief read, the fascinating anecdotes about the various garments and designers with whom Heidi worked make it very entertaining.
Book Description
Laughter is the best medicine, and John McPherson's Get Well, Doctor's Orders! administers a healthy shot in the arm. The high jinks in the guffaw-inducing mini-book will make any real-life illness seem like a walk in the park. Close to Home has a circulation of nearly 600 daily and Sunday newspapers and has been syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate since 1992.
Book Description
Read by the authors.
If you search for the word "coffee" in the Bible, if you're pretty sure that all the pairs of animals in Noah's Ark were married, and if you know that Heaven is up and Hell is down, you'll love Growing Up Lutheran. If the Lutherans you know seem rather, er, mysterious, it will do you good.
Combining their own memories with those of other Lutherans who grew up in the 1940s through the 1960s, Janet and Suzann have written a delightful expose of what it means to be Lutheran and how it's done. Endearing, often hilarious stories shine a light on Lutheran life from baptism ("And His Name Shall Be Called Gilman Einar Stedje") to death ("He Is Not Gone, He Is Only Away"). In between, you'll learn about Sunday School, Christmas pageants (a.k.a. "bathrobe pageants"), Bible Camp, Confirmation, and Lutheran weddings. You'll get the inside scoop on the Lutheran Church Basement Women ("a special species of people"), lutefisk suppers, pew protocol, church architecture, and much more.
In the words of the authors, Growing Up Lutheran is "a mixture of ingredients that we had on hand, generously salted
. With gentle humor, and lightly peppered
with quite a few hot granules of Lutheran theology." This is most certainly true.
Abridged; 3 hours on 2 cassettes or 3 CDs.

Right on Target.......2005-06-25
While the focus of the book is on Lutherans who grew up from the 40s to 60s I must confess that having grown up as the daughter of 2 Lutheran pastors, having worked at a Lutheran bible camp in college where i would go lead VBS at lutheran churches in Minnesota and having graduated from a lutheran college that it still pin points humor about the general Lutheran culture. It does not matter if you are in tune with all of the theology or church politics or not--people who both embrace and reject their Lutheran heritage will still appreciate this book! I must admit that while it was not always humourous and that it is more historical than modern that it did pin point observations with humor that i am currently struggling with while debating whether or not to follow through on attending Lutheran seminary relatively soon. I found it right on target and extremely therapeutic.
Also recommended: Garrison Keiller
and more Lutheran congregants should read Jim Wallis and SOjourners magazines!!
Not quite a laugh a minute, but a good read.......2005-04-15
I must confesss, which is fitting, that I grew up at the same time in the Midwest as these authors.
However, my ancestors are Swedish and we lived in Iowa. You wouldn't think this would make a difference, but it does.
The only thing I can say is that you had to have been there to completely understand this book. And maybe that won't do it.
There was a comment somewhere that said you can't understand it unless you've had beets or Jello melt into your scalloped potatoes on a paper plate.
Growing Up Lutheran.......2004-11-28
I am manager of a Home Health Agency. One day one of the nurses brought this tape and played it during lunch. We laughed until we cried. Especially appreciative are Lutherans or people who were brought up in Scandinavian communities.
If You Didn't . . ........2001-06-28
. . . grow up Lutheran and in the Midwest, you may not appreciate the total humor of this book, but it's still a delightfully witty, tongue-in-cheek commentary on a by-gone era. Once started, I couldn't put it down, because it called up a flood of memories, everything from Sunday School pins to Mother-Daughter banquets to cemetary upkeep. It was MY life they were talking about. For those of you who did (grow up Lutheran in the Midwest), it a journey back into time; for those of you who didn't, it's an education about a whole bunch of us who sit quietly here in the Midwest doing what come naturally.
Grew up Lutheran........2001-06-17
I enjoyed this book well enough to send a copy of it to my Father and an Aunt, who also grew up Lutheran. They enjoyed it, too.

Hot Diggity Dale!.......2000-07-27
This book is should be required for all students of theater. Not only does it offer inspiration, practical insight, and thought provoking questions, it is an exciting read. It is an indispensable companion to "The Empty Space." Brook's ideas are vital and timeless, and Dr. Moffitt serves as both guide and translator through them. No theater Library would be complete without this tome of wisdom from two living legends: Peter Brook and Dr. Dale Moffitt.
A Mind at Work.......2000-05-27
"Between Two Silences: Talking With Peter Brook" is the account of a conversation between Peter Brook and an academic audience over a period of several days. Intelligently edited by Dale Moffitt, it displays Brook's first rate mind. I assume the book would be helpful to students of drama and of Brook's work; my purpose is to recommend it to more general readers. Brook has keen insights into human nature and motivation, with zesty comments about ego, hierarchies, awareness of one's surroundings, and focusing on the material at hand. I profited from his comments about working with what is available, in terms of budget, personnel, setting, and so on. Anyone who needs to work with a team with limited resources, whether in business, academia, government, or even the church, will find here a comrade and a masterful intellect. Brook was clearly "present" to his audience during these conversations. One can understand that the same presence is the key to his remarkable accomplishments in directing.
CHEERS TO THE DR!.......2000-04-08
Dr. Dale Moffitt's stellar editing of Brook's spoken words is a feat of great importance and magnitude. Cheers!
Sitting in the audience.......2000-01-11
Dale Moffitt breathes clarity into Brook's words and often circular ideas that may have been missed otherwise. As a member of the theatre community, I feel blessed that someone was able to illustrate Mr. Brook's forum to the Dallas area. We are lucky to have such a thoughtful insight into the week-long visit of Brook's.
Thank You, Dale Moffitt!.......1999-12-31
Dale Moffitt, a wonderful acting teacher in his own right, presents this wonderfully useful insight into the often complex world of Peter Brook. Moffitt's own spirit shines through this book, illuminating Brook in an marvelous new light. For me, this is the next best thing to having Brook or Moffitt right there in the classroom with you!

The History of the Standard Oil Company: Briefer Version
ASIN: 0967724805 |
Book Description
The primary colors of oil today are money (lots of it), technology (basic but demanding) and people (special ones). The colors of the rainbow can be seen in the 100+ oil producing countries. There are a dozen large petroleum producing and exporting countries. Yet most have little in their history that links them to wealth, technology and management. Corruption among the elite and governments, mismanagement and the squandering of the petroleum wealth are endemic. Culture is everything, and no other human endeavor makes this as pointedly obvious as the world of petroleum.

The color of Oil.......2007-09-07
This book is not too bad, it has chapters good as green colour chapter and black colour chapter and other that are not so good. I think that it is too subjective and has a patriotism air supporting United Estates against the rest. Also it is well written and simple to understand it. For sure that it will not be a master piece but it is interesting the thinking of the writers and Texas AM ( in my opinion one of most prestigious oil involving schools, I studied there). You can learn something about the book...
Off base reviewers.......2007-08-03
I think this book is still on target in depicting the mis-information in the media and so called proven CO2 effects in the atmosphere. In fact, Professor Economides has offer $10,000 to anyone that provides a peer-reviewed report proving that man made effects to global warming is more than 1% of 1% of the warming increase.
Childlike and frustrating.......2007-02-19
This over-simplistic view of the industry does Economidies no honor. It appears to be more of a rush to get his name in print than to do anything in support for or to the decline of the real history of the industry.
One sided and out dated.......2006-02-25
Much of this book is very one sided. In particular the sections on the environment are distorted and now known to be incorrect. The book would be much better if they had not shown their bias.
it nails the big picture.......2005-11-22
This is an absorbing survey of the petroleum industry by two highly knowledgeable oil guys. The prose has a dry academic flavor to it, but the strength of the book's ideas and the way they are propounded bereft of politically correct sentiment almost makes one forget this shortcoming.
Within the book are a few compact chapters on the history of Big Oil that whet the appetite for more. Above all other figures of his day, John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil, sticks out as a fascinating character deserving of a book in his own right (actually there's an excellent one out there by Ron Chernow, called TITAN, that curious readers should pick up).
As their history unfolds, the writers argue that the major conflicts of the 20th century were ultimately the consequence of feuding over oil. It's an interesting perspective and illuminating in many respects, but something of an oversimplification.
THE COLOR OF OIL will turn out to be prophetic, though, in anticipating that the present century and all its accomplishments will be built largely on natural gas, just as the previous was based on oil. It's a view that hasn't sunk into public consciousness yet, but that will change in due course as the era of cheap oil finally draws to a close.
In contrast to a lot of contemporary hyperbole on the subject, THE COLOR OF OIL demonstrates that in a competitive environment, the oil industry can flourish to the benefit of its shareholders and the public without government meddling in its affairs. Curiously, the authors forget this lesson in the final chapter with their call for more government involvement in energy infrastructure and R&D. It's a minor flaw in an otherwise admirable work.
