Book Description
When a tourist is murdered in a cheap off-strip motel, the investigation is surprisingly routine, until it's complicated by a missing videotape and an imploded casino. The trail of evidence points to a man who died twice and left two different corpses, engulfing Gil Grissom and the CSI team in a quagmire of deceit and treachery that stretches back 20 years - and still threatens them today!
Customer Reviews:
An actual review for CSI: Secret Identity.......2007-08-01
Unfortunatley a lot of the reviews here are actually for different volumes of IDW's CSI comics. This is a review specifically of CSI: Secret Identity written by Steven Grant and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez and Steven Perkins.
This is volume 5 of the CSI line, each graphic novel collecting a mini-series put out by IDW. The first three miniseries were written by Max Allen Collins (Ms. Tree, Road to Perdition) and were, quite frankly, boring. The fourth volume written by Kris Oprisko wasn't bad, but it had to do with the Las Vegas mob scene, and so felt a bit cliche.
However this volume, written by Steven Grant is complex and dynamic. He has a great sense of pacing, knows how to weave a complex story that's still possible to follow, and has great cliff-hangers at the end of each chapter.
The story is complex. The fictional Safari Hotel is being demolished. The implosion is made into a big public event. A tourist filming the implosion thinks he sees a body in the debris. He goes to the police but the video image is difficult to make out because of the dust and dirt kicked up by the implosion. But when the tourist is later found dead, his video camera and copies of the tape stolen, the police start looking deeper into the case. They find a body that had been buried in one of the cement pillars during the hotel's construction. The problem being that the corpse is a dead wringer for Vince Lansing, the owner of the hotel who died only a month ago.
The case takes a lot of twists. All of Lansing's family members and former business partners seem to have something to hide. As more evidence, not to mention bodies, are uncovered, the case is definately leading somewhere but the dots don't quite connect. And when they really start getting close a CSI member gets physically assaulted on the front steps of the police station.
Gebriel Rodriguez, who has been the artist on all of IDW's CSI books so far, has really developed as an artist. His characters, not only the CSI characters we already know but also the new characters introduced in this volume, are visually distinct and easily identifiable. His compositions and story-telling in this volume are a lot more dynamic than in previous volumes. Some of the credit for that should go to the writer for giving us great scenes like the old man trying to get away from the police in a golf cart who drives himself right into a sand trap.
The painted art (which is used in the flashback and theoretical sequences which are usually shown in a different color or with CGI on the TV show) is by Steven Perkins. It's intentionally rough, imitating the work of Ashley Wood who illustrated the same types of seqences in the first three volumes. Personally I don't think using a rough painting to imitate a detailed CGI moment was the way to go, but it all boils down to personal taste.
The weakest point is that there's no uniqueness to the characters, though, to be fair, this can be a weak point in some episodes of the show as well. The characters don't show enough individual personality, and could easily be swapped with any other character in almost every scene.
Also, the binding on my copy came apart. This is easily fixable, but it's a disappointing trend in comics in recent years.
All in all, I think this is a good book, much more solid and entertaining than the previous volumes of CSI.
Great Read.......2007-03-22
Great Read, if you are a fan of CSI, you will love this book
A comic book -- yes!.......2007-01-23
Well, I felt compelled to write a review after reading the only review it had below. The book doesn't deserve one star simply because it isn't what the buyer expected. Amazon clearly states in the book description that it is a collection of 3 comic book mini-series.
Anyway, this isn't the greatest comic book out there, it's not even the greatest crime comic out there. But, it is entertaining for fans of the show or fans of Max Allan Collins (writer of Road to Perdition -- yes another comic book, this one turned into a Tom Hanks movie).
What drew me to this was that it is of similar style as Marvel's Essentials and DC's Showcase Presents lines of comic reprints. Those lines reprint large chunks of material in large black and white books.
So, I felt the need to write something to guide people other than the first review. Yes it is a comic book, yes it clearly states that it is. But, any fan of the show or the books will like these stories just as much.
P.S. Look for volume 2 sometime in May, 2007
Nothing but a comic book.......2006-12-13
Bought this book - I guess without reading all the fine print. This book is printed in comic book style and not really what I wanted. Buyer beware - it is like a comic book not a book with text.
Disappointing.......2004-02-26
I watched a couple of CSI episodes so i knew what to expect in terms of plot, characters and such...
I read the excellent "Road To Perdition" by Collins so i was sure he could deliver...
But sadly, this book is a waste of time. The art is mediocre at best (except for Brian Wood's painted art for some extremely stylish a-la tv show cuts & flashbacks), the crime story itself isn't really interesting, but the biggest downside - you don't care what's going on. The writing is a bit heavy, but nevertheless it never captivates a reader. All main characters are in fact just one - "a CSI cop solving a crime", there's no feel for characters whatsoever.
I was really disappointed by this book, because i expected to get more than (let me quote another reviewer here): "Mediocre plot, mediocre art, mediocre characters".
I would probably read another CSI series at some point. Maybe the quality will improve.
If you like comics and are looking for a solid crime story, i suggest to skip this one and read something else instead. "Gotham Central" for example (the first TPB is due April).

Customer Reviews:
Brilliantly absurd.......2007-01-28
What a cool little book that I picked up at the B&N post Xmas sale. Instructoart is exactly that, the type of graphic design that you would find in an instructions manual of some sort. The fun part about it is the absurdity of what it is trying to teach, hence the subtitle "Presented by Matthew Vescovo - Master of the Obvious".
My favorite vignettes are:
"Black & Curly"
"People You Trust with Your Children (The Revised List)"
"Gay. Straight"
And I especially love the author's notes at the end. Brilliant! I shall look for more of his work.
Customer Reviews:
Only for the serious film student!.......2005-08-23
This book is a very academic study focussing on D. W. Griffith's work in the years 1908-09, which marked the transition from moving pictures as a novelty or gimmick to an actual `story film' as we know them today. Griffith has been honoured with titles like `the Father of Film', and is credited with introducing many directing, filming and editing techniques which are commonplace today, and anyone with a serious interest in the development of cinema would most likely benefit from this book. But put your thinking-cap on first; this is no easy, entertaining read before bedtime! The approach, the language and the analysis used by the author demand concentration, proper attention and respect. It would also be very helpful for the reader to have some previous knowledge of early film development in the first decade of the 1900s, or at least have seen Griffith's `shorts' from the years prior to 1913. Fortunately, I had just finished reading "The Transformation of Cinema, 1907-1915" by Eileen Bowser which was a good, solid introduction to all the factors which led to cinema developing into what it is now, and therefore I was able to follow "The Origins of American Narrative Film" reasonably easily, although one or two chapters at the beginning and end were slightly challenging.
The author, Tom Gunning, has made a very fine effort in drawing together some of the main factors which moulded the film industry in the years 1908-09, and attempts to be fair by explaining how Griffith found ideas and inspiration from previous film makers, the social trends and the push by `reformers' who were trying to make moving pictures appeal to the middle-class audiences. I found these aspects very interesting, and they give a good, well-rounded picture of history and how certain people like Griffith find and make their place in history. Apart from these accounts, the author has gone into great detail with some of Griffith's films to clearly explain certain techniques which Griffith employed, such as cut-ins and parallel editing - things that we take for granted today, but were a surprising novelty nearly a century ago. There are quite a few photographs from the films in question and also many notes for further reference and reading, but for me personally, I enjoyed gaining a deeper insight into how the narrative film, ie the story film, emerged. Films were not always as they are now, with good stories and plots, suspense, intrigue, close-ups, editing to create excitement, etc. These things had to be thought-out and developed: the format of a good book had to be `translated' to the new film medium, and Griffith was at the forefront in America in these critical years of 1908-09. There is only one chapter dealing with Griffith's work after these years up to 1915, and the book discusses only Griffith's work, not any aspects of Griffith personally - the main focus of the book being this turning point in film history, and having all these techniques explained to me more thoroughly has left me with an even deeper appreciation and respect for both Griffith and films in general. Definitely a worth while read for the serious silent film enthusiast or film historian.

Book Description
This second edition of the classic book is thoroughly revised to reflect the vast influence of the Internet. New information on current operating systems, hardware, and software has been added to this comprehensive survey of MIDI, sound generation, Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), digital recording, sampling, music scoring, and composing.
Customer Reviews:
Not the greatest.......2002-03-07
Not exactly the greatest book I've ever owned...the computer background information is woeful (I found 3 glaring mistakes in 70 pages of material by just skimming). The book has generally good information on the software it covers and a pretty good intro to MIDI.
Not what I expected.......2002-02-02
I expected a careful, general overview of the various uses of technology in music. This book is clearly for a classroom that uses Macs and the specific software indicated. There is not one entry for Finale, nor microphone/recording techniques. The book is pretentious in its organization (academic music ed. types) and woefully lacking in providing the required general overview of concepts, and prefers to teach specific software applications, many of which are not mainstream.
Great Resource: Experiencing Music Technology.......2000-01-21
This is a great resource for a lot of people. Whethr you are a music teacher looking to enhance your music teachning with some technology, or you are a professor wanting a textbook for a music technology class you are teaching, this book has something worth-while. David B. Williams and Peter R. Webster are veterans in the field with many years' experience.
Awesome Book!.......1999-09-06
I am a student of Dr. Williams, author, and I think that this book is amazing. It's probably the easiest reading textbook I have ever had. I don't get bored when I read this book like I do other text books. This is a must have for music tech students!!
Very informative for beginners in the Music Technology field.......1999-01-26
My Music Technology class used this for last semester. It has a broad overview of the technology of Music Engineering ranging from MIDI to running the Macintosh OS. One of the best things about it is the fact that it uses mostly simple language to explain the topics it covers. Any Music Tech. student would be advised to purchase this book. Many Music Ed. majors I know also use this book. It covers how to utilize computer software in Music Theory classes and composing classes.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but only for french defence starters.......2006-02-09
Im aware that very recently, and especially throughout this year (2006) there would be published really a bunch of the new french books. Added to existing Psakhis 4 volume series, would be Pedersens new works which would also close its series, and there would be Sam Collins French Advance, which to me at least tell that Everyman too would like to close its series in near future. All in all, there is all of a sudden a lot of material for advanced player.
But, there are almost none for beginner. So this book is trying to accomplish that goal. Well, it succeded, but partially. As the previous rewiers noted, the lines are not perfect in every variation, but honestly, I think that is no of much significance for starters. What is more important is feeling for playing french u can catch with this book because author really explained the particularies and plans nicely.
Recommended for beginers in french, best followed by Play the french from Watson.
misdirection.......2005-06-17
Here are several reasons you should avoid this book:
1) the author gives 2 games in the introduction and neither are from the French.
2) the author begins with the Winawer variation which is probably the most complex and where the 'basic ideas' will take a back seat to heavy tactical complications. (Also, I don't know why he didn't think it necessary to explain typical plans or tactical motifs before you jumped into the most theory-laden line of the French. He didn't even discuss pain chains at any length!!).
3) the annotations he quotes offer little explaination as to the philosophy of the variation. Also, most was written before in other sources in ChessBase (in fact he quotes verbatim a good deal of analysis without giving credit).
4) he actually MISquotes some games (i.e. he claims Morozevich played ...Qd8 when, if you actually look up the game, Morozevich played ...Qc7. This can be very confusing in some positions where the given move is simply bad. He also claims equality in some lines which are considered clearly better for white by other annotators (including the players themselves or the silicon kind).
5) there are much better books on the French available. (see John Watson's terrific (but complex) "Play the French" or "Mastering the French" or a Psakhis book or a Danny King Video or just about anything else).
6)Most importantly, you don't actually learn how to 'Start Out' playing the French. The analysis is heavy, inaccurate, and doesn't teach you must at all. Trying to learn the basics of the French by repeating GM analysis on Morozevich or Korchnoi games isn't not very instructive at all for class players.
start or don't start at all.......2004-10-17
If you are looking for a book on the french, there are plenty out there that are way way way better this crappy book. First of all, in some variations he claims that black is equal... but if you type in the variation on fritz he assesses it much better for white. This show the poor effort that went into this book. Also he only gives 2 games for each chapter which does nothing for a serious french play. Also, he only gives responses to white's main moves. He doesn't even explain the tricky sidelines white can play to throw the french player offguard. All in all this book is total crap. If you are looking for a book on the french, get "Play the French" by Jon Watson. This is an excellent book that is 276 and provides top coverage and sidelines to ANYTHING white replies. He gives 4 variations black can play against anything white throws at you. So its easy to pick a variation that suits your style. He also gives untested variations and lets you do a little bit of exploring. If you are looking for a book on the french, then get "Play the French" 3rd edition by Jon Watson.
Starting out, or don't even start?.......2003-04-25
The winawer variations is covered fairly well, where he gives useful tips and warnings and present important games.
The rest of the book however is pretty worthless if you are looking for a book to get you started with the french. For example, in the 3.Nd2 variation, he shows a wild position arising (it is all theory) and gives no help at all to the black player:
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ne2 cxd 8.cxd f6
"There are wild complications after 9.Nf4 Nxd4 10.Qh5 Ke7 11.Ng6+ hxg6 12.exf6+ Nxf6 13.Qxh8."
Well yes, thanks a lot, but I would like to know how I should continue if I don't want to lose in a few moves. But Byron stops right here...
Many of the games in other main lines are also examples of black getting killed instantly, and the notes won't give you much help either. You're on your own in the middle of some highly popular and theoretical positions.
The part of the winawer is fine, the rest is just very very bad. Can't be recommended.
Especially for intermediate level chess players.......2003-04-19
Compiled by chess author and journalist Byron Jacobs, Starting Out: The French is an extensive analysis of The French defense and its variations for Black in the classic game of chess. Insightful explanations and page after page of play-by-play games, with visual diagrams enhancing the appropriate positional shorthand, make Starting Out: The French a superb guide, especially for intermediate level chess players seeking to advance their skills.

Excellent tool.......2007-05-12
I've read this book almost cover to cover and I've gained a lot of insight in using Skilled Facilitator approaches as a teacher and a minister. Mostly, it's given me insight into how to develop myself as a creative listener, and how to control my inner thought processes, and turn that back around into positive leadership for the good of the group. I find it particularly helpful to keep the RULES foremost in my mind as I interact with students and parishioners. And it's true that the more I model these rules, the more my students and the others around me absorb them and begin to use them in their own interactions.
A FIELDBOOK OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.......2005-04-20
Central to this work is the Skilled Facilitator approach (TSF), a systematic, values-based approach to group facilitation; at its core is the idea that the way we act and the consequences we create begin with the way we think. Chapter one delineates the 10 key features of TSF approach. It is used to help groups and entire organizations address issues and make significant change, as well as in coaching, training, and conducting HRD/OD initiatives of all types.
This ambitious resource is bursting with 62 contributions clustered into seven parts:
1) Understanding the Skilled Facilitator Approach-main focus: summarizes the approach and describes its major principles and features (8 chapters)
2) Starting Out-main focus: using TSF in a variety of basic ways (12 chapters)
3) Deepening Your Practice-main focus: refining intervention and diagnosis skills, and increasing personal awareness (7 chapters)
4) Facing Challenges-main focus: dealing with the most difficult situations (5 chapters)
5) Seeking Your Path-main focus: integrating the TSF approach in practice and life (5 chapters)
6) Leading and Changing Organizations-main focus: creating major change in leadership and organizational functioning (15 chapters)
and
7) Integrating the Skilled Facilitator Approach in Your Worklife (and Non-Worklife)-main focus: shows how to integrate TSF with other approaches and roles (coach, trainer, consultant, leader, parent) (10 chapters)
The book is further enriched with: definitions; key points; examples; tools and techniques and samples of the outcomes they produce; reflections; model conversations; and resources.
As a consultant in organizational analysis, design and change, as well as a reviewer, I was particularly drawn to Chapter 51, "Do Surveys Provide Valid Information for Organizational Change?" by Peg Carlson. She concludes what we have found to be true of surveys-they are useful for spotlighting likely issues but they do not deliver the depth of analysis and meaning required in organizational consulting, nor the motivation for learning and deep change. This chapter is emblematic of the books' quality of content. In a nutshell, this book is outstanding! I highly recommend it.
