Book Description
This fascinating work studies how shoe constructions, patterns and styles evolved in the three Scandinavian countries. Individual shoes and styles are analyzed to show similarities with Europe, both east and west, and the differences of time, with the occasional creation of unique shoes, or rejection of popular European fashions. It shows the patterns for Sami footwear, many unique, and those features of so-called folk dress which have evolved from fashion, and those that are original to the region. It reflects the importance of the Age of Greatness in seventeenth century Sweden and the region in earlier Viking times, as well as the transient power of important cities. Many questions remain to be answered and challenge students in the three countries to research them. Publication in full of shoe finds from excavations would be an invaluable step forward. Includes hundreds of color and black & white photographs and diagrams.

On her way home from shopping, Suh Rin meets with an unfortunate end when she is hit by an on coming truck. The next thing she knows, she's being abducted by a stranger. Overwhelmed by the fact that she had just been killed, Suh Rin has difficulty grasping this newly entered existence in the realm of spirits. More importantly, she has yet to realize that a tremendous supernatural power lies within her... a power great enough to make her the target of abductions by tremendously powerful people within the spirit realm.

"Everything you wanted to know about the holiness-horniness nexus, but they wouldn't tell you."-George Carlin
Found in nearly every home, within the reach of underage children, is a book plump with scenes normally confined to sin-bins marked "Adults Only." We're talking about the Holy Bible, a book filled with incest, rape, adultery, prostitution, drugs, bestiality, castration-all the nasty stuff!
Customer Reviews:
Sex, sex and more sex.......2005-12-07
I totally agree with the author when he states that the bible is nothing more than "an ancient book of fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by men" And I also concur that the bible is an unspeakably barbaric and draconian book and should be rated "R", not suitable for minors. Adults in general should be aware, that unless they are willing to read a grossly violent book, full of hatred, discrimination, treason, deceit, lies, murder, genocide, pillage, cruelty, torture, rape, forgery, etc., etc., etc.; they should also expect a high dose of sexual related matter and obscene passages. What you hear from the priests is only the selected "good" material and people usually ignore all the (overwhelming) obscure and nasty parts of the scriptures. In fact, they all suffer from something called "Selective hypocrisy" ! Mr. Akerley's book is a good example of an eye-opener for all those hypocrites who still think that the bible is the non-plus-ultra of all the books. Even worse, those who think it's the word of god...........!? However, Mr. Akerley seems to have a pathological obsession with sex. He seems to over exaggerate the erotic contents and his interpretations of some passages are biased and confusing. Only someone with a sick mind could be able to find so many messages with an erotic content in almost every chapter of the scriptures. I mean, there are countless passages containing sexual messages in the bible, but many of them, can be interpreted as naïve, rather than obscene. In this respect, Mr. Akerely's book has been a disappointment and therefore, deserving only a three star rating. Not all is bad, there are some excellent interpretations. My favourite is from Genesis 4:1-17 Here Cain conceives a son (Enoch) with his wife............. Wait a minute, what wife are we talking about? Supposedly, in the beginning there where only Adam and Eve, who had two sons, Abel and Cain. So, where the hell does Cain's wife come from?? Did he "do" it with Eve? Or did he have an unnamed sister? Either way, we're talking about an incestuous relation!! Go figure!! Read the book, and get to your own conclusions. A - Men!
Puerile fecundity.......2005-06-29
Other reviewers referred to this work as "thoughtful" and a "worthwhile study," which is what lead me to buy the book. A careful read of the first few chapters plus spot checks through the rest of the work make it clear that it's just a recounting of sexy Bible verses accompanied by commentary with a homosexual bias. I don't object to the bias, but rather to the childish and rather dreary fecundity evident in the giggling paraphrasing of Biblical narrative. A thoughtful and worthwhile study of Biblical sexuality would have been nice.
Somewhat accurate but missing the point.......2004-12-06
Mr. Akerley accurately records the "X-Rated" verses in the Bible but he fails to miss the point of the Bible as a whole: all humans have fallen from their created state of grace and are in need of salvation from their sins and restoration to a right relationship with God. Yes, even the "great patriarchs" and heroes of Scripture are human and flawed...surprise, surprise. Sometimes those flaws are revealed in a sexual context, other times in a different manner: note that Noah was a drunk and Moses was a murderer.
Akerley consolidates in his book the sexual perversions described in the Bible and quotes various historical figures in pursuing his agenda. He takes the typical secular world view and condemns the Bible and those who follow it and does one thing that the Bible, itself, does not: sensationalize the sexual perversion and obscenity it describes.
The Bible is what it is: a no-holds-barred look at people across several thousand years and how they continually screw things up. It also shows God's patience, love, kindness, and grace in using those same screwed-up individuals in trying to make the world a better place... on God's terms. Akerley conveniently leaves out those parts of the Bible which are more significant that the sexual perversions he focuses upon.
Akerley's "The X-Rated Bible" follows a simple formula: cut-and-paste bits and pieces out of the Bible and offer up more of the same bitter and angry rhetoric leveled against the Bible, Jews, and Christians seen around the world. As such, it offers nothing new: one star.
Lots here.......2004-11-26
The author could have just quoted X-rated scripture and left it at that. He didn't. By adding historical information and his own thoughts, The X-Rated Bible is a very worthwhile study. An excellent, thorough, and thoughtful book. One of the best!
Another great book that explores the bible.......2004-10-29
Awesome book. Even if you have a "degree" from a bible college (although I don't really see how you can compare a degree from a college on made-up beliefs and nutball stories with one that came from a respectable institution such as Yale, Harvard, etc.) this would be a great book to read to see another person's perspective on that crazy book they call the bible. As for the bible being true or false. I don't really think anyone can answer that for sure one way or the other, however, the book of Genesis is quite obviously false because we now know that the earth was NOT created in a few days. If you still believe that it was, you need serious psychological help!

Book Description
In the spring of 1969, a young nurse is raped and brutally beaten in a quiet suburb of Boston called Cleveland Circle. Twenty-six years later, a ne'er-do-well Boston accountant, James Courtney Murray, is murdered and a yellowed newspaper clipping describing the old rape is left on his body. The latest DNA-testing techniques confirm his killer's charge: Murray was the Cleveland Circle rapist.
Enter Owen Keane, failed seminarian and compulsive solver of mysteries. Keane was a college classmate of Murray's and a fellow suspect in the Cleveland Circle attack. He sets out to clear his friend and find his murderer, driven by his own guilty knowledge of the 1969 crime.
As he moves though the Boston of 1995, Keane slips back repeatedly to his lost days in college, both to reexamine the old mystery and to revisit a love affair that had as profound an effect on his life as any murder. He is caught in the middle when the past and present collide in the most harrowing climax of this critically acclaimed series.
Customer Reviews:
Attention to detail personified.......2001-11-28
Terence Faherty is a wordsmith. His attention to detail and the amazingly graphic development of his characters embrace the reader and make you feel part of the action.
This story takes Owen Keane back to his college days when a brutal murder rocked the campus of Boston College. Two and a half decades have passed and now the police have announced that they've solved the case. A DNA test has linked an old friend of Owen's to the crime. The man can't defend himself because he has been murdered leaving his wife and daughter to live with the disgrace.
Owen knows that his old friend was innocent and sets out to uncover the truth. Along the way he finds indications that someone has been tampering with the evidence in order to implicate the old college chum. But who? And why?
Returning to his old school stirs a lot of memories in Owen Keane, some good and some bad. The reader lives the experience right along side of Owen.
In spite of the frequent flashbacks, this story is put together very well. You never get lost in the past and you never get tired of visiting it.
Terence Faherty simplifies a complicated plot and takes the reader for a very entertaining tour.
FAHERTY STRIKES GOLD AGAIN !!.......1999-09-09
Terence Faherty, one of America's top writers in the mystery genre, has produced another literary delight in "Orion Rising" in the continuing Owen Keane series. Keane, whose last appearance was in 1997's entertaining mystery, "The Ordained" (also published by St. Martin's Press), weaves this story between 1969 and 1995.
Keane must solve a seemingly iron-clad charge of a brutal rape and beating of a female college student against a now deceased Boston college student whose DNA has now been determined to match the vicious crime. Keane's determined persistence and unrelenting drive for the truth allows him to overcome many obstacles.
This story also features two characters who have been in prominence in most of the Owen Keane stories, namely Attorney Harry Ohlman, his sometime employer, and the love of his life the late Mary Fitzgerald (Ohlman). This novel provides readers more onsight into Keane's earlier relationship with these two friends who would help to shape the life of the failed seminarian, Owen Keane.
The past and the present weave a spell-binding tale in "Orion Rising". Author Faherty is well known for his attention to detail, crafty observances and, of course, a well placed sense of humor in his stories. The Owen Keane novels have been Edgar-nominated and Faherty's Scott Elliott series have won the Shamus Award.
Terence Faherty has the style and talent that is well suited for other literary efforts as well as his delightful mystery series. "Orion Rising" will please all existing (and new) devotees to the Keane and Elliott series. It is always a pleasure to read the stories of Terence Faherty.
Keane at his best.......1999-07-02
In 1969, the police believe that one of three Boston College freshmen (Owen Keene, James Murray, or Harry Ohlman) raped Francine Knaff. Over a quarter of a century later, an unknown assailant murders Murray, leaving an aging newspaper article from the rape case with the corpse. A DNA test proves that hair entangled on Francine's ring match that of Murray.
Owen feels guilty because he knew a lot about the rape crime, but kept his mouth shut. Wondering if it is the thrill or just part of his DNA, Owen always enjoys investigating a mystery even if it places his life in danger. An obsessive Owen decides to prove his friend was innocent of the `69 crime and uncovers the identity of his killer.
Any reader who prefers gore needs to pass on the Owen Keane novels. However, if a fan enjoys a cerebral, character driven tale, they will absolutely devour this series. The latest entry, ORION RISING, is a superb story that interestingly counterpoints the hero's past with his present, which adds much depth to Owen. As always in a Terence Faherty book, the motives and reasons for a crime propel the story line to an intriguing conclusion. This series and Mr. Faherty's Scott Elliott tales are entertainment without a free flowing aorta.

"The Zodiac points to trouble, and a beautiful astrologer seeks to solve a murder in the stars!"
Book Description
The Rising of Orion is the story of the author, conceived as a result of the rape of his unwed mother. It is the story of that mother and her family's trials that placed her in the position of having no rational choice but to place her new baby son and a daughter of four years into the adoption system. This is an adoption story, but it is also much more. It is the story of this male child of part American Indian blood (whose people had, unknown to him, been hunters back in time forever) and of his inborn love of hunting and all creatures wild. It is the tale of his life with an adopted family and of people, who had never hunted or lived in wild country, solely for the love of being a part of the Great Spirit of nature. The book is a study of this young man's struggle with the powerful DNA of his long-dead, Indian grandfathers, and how he manages to, wonderfully, take control of his life and his very nature. At age forty-six, the author finds his heritage after an adoption search and, at last, understands the man he has become.

Book Description
A provocative departure from conventional thinking, Bad Leadership compels us to see leadership in its entirety
Kellerman argues that the dark side of leadership—from rigidity and callousness to corruption and cruelty—is not an aberration. Rather bad leadership is as ubiquitous as it is insidious—and so must be more carefully examined and better understood.
Drawing on high-profile contemporary examples—from Mary Meeker to David Koresh, Bill Clinton to Radovan Karadzic, Al Dunlap to Leona Helmsley—Kellerman explores seven primary types of bad leadership and dissects why and how leaders cross the line from good to bad. The book also illuminates the critical role of followers, revealing how they collaborate in, and sometimes even cause, bad leadership.
Daring and counterintuitive, Bad Leadership makes clear that we need to face the dark side in order to become better leaders and followers ourselves.
Customer Reviews:
Every Christian Should Read.......2007-06-14
This is a must for people working in Christian organizations and for laypeople in churches. There is bad leadership in the church and it often looks a lot like good leadership. Kellerman writes about the "recent revelations of wrongdoing by leaders of the Roman Catholic Church . . . that was so abhorrent it makes us all ill." She continues: "the idea that some leaders and some followers are bad, and that they might have something in common with good leaders and followers, has not fully penetrated the conversation or the curriculum" [of leadership training]. Her book is aptly titled for my situation ("My Calvin Seminary Story") where poor leadership derailed my career.
Brilliant, Bold and [Mostly] Useful.......2006-08-16
Harvard University's Kellerman presents an amazing, research-focused vivisection of the many faces and roles of bad leadership, offers reasons for their occurrence, and exerts a clarion call for identification and eradication of same.
Kellerman identifies seven specific types of poor leading:
1) Incompetent: lacks the will or skill (or both) to sustain effective action with regard to at least one important leadership challenge
2) Rigid: stiff and unyielding; unable or unwilling to adapt to new ideas, new information, or a changing of the landscape
3) Intemperate: lacks self-control
4) Callous: uncaring or unkind; ignores or disregards the needs, wants, and wishes of others, especially subordinates
5) Corrupt: lies, cheats, or steals; puts self above any other interest
6) Insular: minimizes or disregards the health and welfare of anyone outside the group or organization for which they are directly responsible
7) Evil: outright disregard for even the human worth of others; egregious inhumanity.
As is common with Harvard B-School releases, the book is brilliant, innovative and analysis heavy. Prescriptions for change are succinct-- if you find this, kill it off-- yet limited in use: once found and destroyed, what do I do next?
Innovative and unflinching, it will be nevertheless most accessible to scholars and the scholarly among business leaders: a more populist rendering of the same discoveries, and prescriptions for improvement, would lift it far above the norm.
Coke Newell, MSPR, consultant and author, "Journey to Edaphica"
The Dark Side.......2006-07-01
The book stands out because it forces you to take a look at the dark side of leadership. It is about leadership in and of itself. The book has an entirely unique perspective on leadership. She looks at all leaders and how they measure up as leaders. Even if society views them as a bad leader she takes that and builds on some of their strengths as a leader, their weaknesses and not necessarily their intent. The actual process of leading is the focus. She also looks at the followers and their role in leadership. This I think is also unique to leadership. It is important to analyze the followers and how they can affect the leader. In looking at the dark side of leadership we are able to become better leaders and/or followers.
Excellent alternative perspective.......2006-02-08
This was very interesting and a fairly easy read. Looks at leadership away from the stereotypical definition of good. Adds to a big picture I had not seen anywhere before. Should be required reading for all management to help them see the bad guys they often miss or intentionally overlook in their organizations.
Concise would be nice.......2005-09-25
The "Bad Leadership" concept pulled me in. PR summaries on this book were better written than what I have muddled through so far. This book is word heavy. Barbara could use a little help from Suzy Welch, who I suspect helped Jack Welch with "Winning" an improvement in writing style of "From the Gut". Enjoying both Welch's books the improved difference is concise focus in Winning. The first half of Bad Leadership has been labor intense, with a modest return for my reading time investment. Reading for information readily consumable, this book has good intentions but modestly delivers . I have not committed to finishing, as there are better reads that easily pulled me away.
