A Beautiful Introduction to Chicano/a Art.......2003-08-09
"Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art: Artists, Work, Culture, and Education" is a beautifully produced, two-volume introduction to the vibrant, sexy and often political genre of Chicano/a art. Many kudos to Bilingual Press for taking on this huge project. You will find the remarkable artwork of such artists as Rene Arceo, Connie Arismendi, Alma Lopez, and hundreds of others. The reproduced work jumps out at you with life and power. These two volumes were produced with the support of the Center for Latino Initiatives of The Smithsonian Institution, the Inter-University Program for Latino Research, and numerous art organizations. I highly recommend this set.

Entertaining gallery of mistakes.......2003-11-09
I just attended one of Robin Netherton's lectures about the accumulation of interpretation errors in early costume research during the Victorian years -- how one author would make a mistake, and that would be picked up by another author copying the first, and more mistakes laid on (with the best of intentions.) This book was presented as one of the most entertaining of these mistakes, because although the author used the at-the-time new photo printing technologies, she didn't use it for original sources (manuscript illustrations, etc) but for pictures of contemporary models in her interpretations of medieval clothing. The results are extremely funny. I expect similar problems with the other eras covered. I am ordering this book for its humor value and because I'm a medieval hat fanatic.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A science fiction struggle over some super powered hybrid children, involving some unpleasant aliens.
This is Doran's magnum opus, as the children learn their place and start to understand what is actually going on.
Something Wonderful.......2006-03-27
This is a book I got for my birthday (3-17) that I had read in another edition from another publisher when I was 14. I was a little bit worried to read it again because when you have good memories of something from a long time ago, sometimes it is hard to go back to them again. One of the reviews here sounded like the book was going to be really yaoi with lots of sex and things I wasn't sure I wanted to see and that it was hard to understand the new version. I didn't have any trouble understanding the new version, and if there is a lot of sex in this one, I missed it. There's no naked people sex in this book. Maybe in later volumes? It looks like a little bit of skin in the next book (I got that too), but nothing much. Maybe I am a little disappointed now! Especially since the guys are so cute! That is one thing that is different. I think the artist draws a lot better than they used to. Rieken-Seren is so beautiful. His face is like a dream. He is like a prettier version of David Bowie, if you can do that! Anyway, I really liked this newer version a lot. I had no trouble following it. So, I don't know why anyone said they did. It takes careful reading, but I like that. It doesn't seem to me that this is a book you can just flip through. You have to pay attention. If you do not pay attention, you will miss a lot. It is as if almost every little line has double meaning. It's a great puzzle and that interests me. It has a dreamy quality too, but it is good fantasy (more fantasy than science fiction, I think). The Avatar is Seren who is so gorgeous he should just have his own book by himself. Anyway, he is like a god to his people because he can draw on their collective life force and use it as his own power. But since there can be only one (sounds kind of like Highlander but it isn't), the evil Hierarchy of his world comes to Earth to find Liana, a little girl who is also an Avatar. (She's not that little but she is young). The Hierarchy must kill her or the Avatar can't use his power. Seren is working against the Hierarchy but they don't know. He is leader of the rebellion. When his people come to Earth to kill Liana he gets some humans to help him to kill the Hierarchy. There is a lot more to it than that and I am already reading volume II, but don't want to flip forward. It is a little strange about the fantasy in here. How did Sir Galahad get into this story? I really want to see how that works out. Oh yeah, he is cute too. This book sort of feels like manga, but it isn't. It is harder to read than manga, but I like that because I get more story. Some manga seems to take 15 minutes to read a whole book. I really read and studied this book a lot and got a lot out of that. This art is pretty like manga, but more realistic. That is OK to me. This book is not yaoi like that other review makes it seem. If you are looking for serious yaoi, you will be disappointed probably. But it is shonen ai a bit. Seren and D'mer are lovers, but you don't really see much. Anyway, this is my first review and I hope you like it.
A toned down version of the original..........2006-01-18
If you were introduced to a Distant Soil in its WARPS Graphics incarnation--this is a toned down version rewritten to be less offensive, yet be warned it delves more deeply into unpleasant subjects like child molestation and rape. Incidents that were hinted in the WARP version are now in chilling detail, while other plot points, characterization and intrigues are glossed over or toned down so we are left with a version that feels schizophrenic.
A Distant Soil is sci-fi in its truest form. A diabolical long-lived alien race is set on conquering the galaxy. When not killing their own children for unwanted psychic powers, they spend their time conquering lesser races to enslave. The alien race's power is embodied in the Avatar, a godlike deity that is supported/enslaved by the vile Hierarchy.
The gist of the story (for there are many subplots and dimensional cross-overs) is a recently deceased Avatar charged with killing children with unwanted psychic powers took pity and allowed many to live that would have otherwise been killed. One of these deviants is discovered and with the help of the new Avatar escapes to earth where he fathers several children...
One of which happens to be an Avatar incarnate, sharing a soul with the current Avatar. The alien race is shocked that such a lesser being wielding this power and sets out to find and kill this upstart. Unfortunately, the alien race has an underground resistance who is also trying to capture the Earthen Avatar and use her for their own ends.
Mix in a fairy, an Arthurian knight, a policeman, and some various aliens and you have a fabulous sci-fi story.
Be warned there are heavy scenes of homo-erotica, homosexuality, bisexuality and hinted at child molestation (the last hyped up since the first incarnation of this series to level that personally sickened me-hinting was enough before).
I enjoyed the original series and was very confused or lost in this incarnation of the story -though it did proceed further than the WARP edition-because basic explanations are missing. Relationships between characters have been toned down since the first incarnation, but nudity is on the rise.
The lovingly crafted art is fabulous and is what drew me first to the series. It still contains many of the original elements, but has lost the spark the first incarnation from WARP displayed.
I would have given it five stars had she stuck to the original story from WARP but it is too transformed and confusing to be given 5 stars (especially when you can lose faithful readers in scenes they have all ready read before!)
Twisting complex plot and beautiful graphics.......2005-02-25
The plot of A Distant Soil involves aliens who look just like people and whose society is based entirely on psychic energy by which they communicate. We follow the story of Liana, a girl who has been raised in a mental institution where her psychic powers are studied. She and her brother, her only family in the world, escape. They are separated and Liana is approached by aliens who explain that she has very powerful psychic powers and they need her help. Their society is ruled by a single person (alien?) with very powerful skills at organizing psychic energy. This person, the Avatar, serves as a religious leader and also
There is a certain amount of disconcerting randomness here. Author Colleen Doran began publishing this series (its been redrawn for this release) when she was in her teens. This may explain why this book is the way it is. It is lots like a teen girl's daydream: beautiful drawings with lots of flowy lines, Galahad comes from the land of Avalon through a time warp and accompanies our heros into space among other plot oddities.
So the plot is kind of stupid. At the same time it is extremely complex and twisting. Characters have complex motives and act accordingly. We see lots of politics. And it all makes sense. Within this random random world there aren't inconsistencies. There are things to figure out and a plot to follow.
The drawings here are very nice. They are done in a very defined line drawing style. Every page is well done and also pretty: art nouveau flowers and rainbows pretty. Battles fought with psychic energy work well with this style of representation. The layouts are packed (in a good way) and there is lots happening on every page.
I liked this but I don't know if it is worth reading in general. It is an intelligent and involving comic... ... on the other hand: Galahad in space is never a good sign.
Fantasy, space opera, political drama, romance!.......2004-05-20
I haven't read this book in years. In fact, the last time I read it was sometime in the 1980's, back when it was at another publisher (and I only bought it because my name was similar to that of the artist!) This is a very different version than the edition I read. It has been rewritten and redrawn entirely, with superior results. Not only does the story move more coherently than before, but the drawing is a great improvement. The story is about a half-human young girl who is an Avatar. She can control the life force of all the psionic people on her planet. But this makes her a danger to the homeworld of her father because an Avatar is a kind of weapon being used by an alien government to rule it's corner of the universe and there can be only one at a time. And they already have one. So, the girl has to go. Lots of convoluted stuff is going on and it is kind of amazing how Colleen Doran manages to take all of these unlikely people and events and put them into this strange stew and come out with something that is moving, funny and entertaining. I can't imagine anyone else being able to pull this story off and make it work. I think she just loves her work so much that you can feel it coming through the paper. You can tell this is a book by someone who loves her characters and the world they live in which is rare in a world where people just seem to want to make a buck. This is not a camera ready book, being made to put out a movie or cartoon. If you want an experience that lets you step into another reality, then this is it. You walk into this world with its strange rules and it works. The characters are so real and likeable that you are compelled to keep reading. Manga and shonen ai fans will like this, too, especially the romantic moments. I really liked this book.

This book is, in a word, fantastic. Every single tidbit regarding the game is in here, from the locations of every item and character to detailed walkthroughs of every level. Maps are given for only the most confusing areas, so there is no wasted space anywhere in the guide filled with a map you would never need. The walkthrough takes the screenshot/caption approach, and works very well. All of the pictures are ultra clear--there's never any doubt as to where you are in the game when reading. Each of the four characters' quests are presented in immaculate detail; you'll discover all of Castlevania's secrets in no time. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
terrific developmental gem.......2007-05-16
Delightful and highly valuable insights on problem-solving, teamwork, and personal development. Mr. Weinberg's pleasant writing style makes this book that is packed with valuable advice nonetheless very easy and enjoyable to read. It has dramatically impacted the way I self-manage my career. Gold star!
A Holy Book.......2005-09-15
Words are unable to describe the value of this book. The material in this book should be IMPRINTED in the brains of anyone who holds a managerial position in the computer industry. If you haven't read this book then you can count on being a lesser manager. That says it all.
Excellent Book For New And Future Leaders.......2005-01-18
I have gotten more out of this book than any other that I have read. It is ideal for current software developers who think they might be interested in leadership. It begins with some basic ideas about leadership and how they will relate to the rest of the book. The real meat of the book is in sections 2, 3, and 4 which are dedicated to Innovation, Motivation, and Organization - the three key components of being a technical leader. Weinberg does an excellent job of explaining these topics as well as the barriers to them. Each chapter ends with a list of questions. You will not get as much out of the book if you do not take the time to think through and write down your answers. Also, you will be asked to begin keeping a personal journal in one of the chapters on Innovation. You will not regret taking the five minutes a day to do this. It is well worth it. The book ends with some advice to help you implement changes necessary to become a technical leader as well as understand why you want to do it. The book asks a lot of its readers, but it gives a good return on the investment.
Best guide to becoming a tech. lead I've read.......2003-12-22
Concrete advice about both how to assess where you are today, and what to do to become and be a technical leader. There are also some fun anecdotal pseudo-conversations that work as a nice interlude, and a great description of the tradeoffs between technical and personal strenths.
While a light read, I couldn't help coming away from this book feeling that it was longer than it needed to be -- the information density isn't terribly high. A few of the pseudo-graphs that appeared in the book also seemed to have mislabeled axes, though that may have been corrected in subsequent editions.
THE BOOK on Leadership.......2003-08-10
Jerry recently stopped giving the workshop on which this book
is based. I number him among my most valued friends. Our
friendship began in that workshop. If you take the approach to
leadership that this book explains you'll be the kind of leader
that almost anyone would willingly follow, and with good reason.
I'm still trying to assimilate the thousands of tasty bits of
wisdom it contains. Jerry already has. He's been there and back
again, and has buried many of the jewels he discovered on his
journey in this book. BUY IT.
