          Book Description

Right this way, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another tasty all-you-can-eat collection of Simpsonoid comical funnies, written, penciled, inked, and simmered just for you by your favorite demented cartoon chefs at Bongo Comics. We've got a special meaty comic book stew du jour a-bubblin' away on the stove for you this time, full of rich Barty goodness, thick Homerish chunks, and sinewy Lisa-esque fibers. And, by popular request, we've added a scoop or two of spicy Maggie-renos, along with our usual heaping dollops of authentic Snowball II furballs, and, to stretch the meal even further, a jumbo box full of Santa's Little Helper helper.

A Milhouse salad, of course, comes with every meal at no extra charge. Krustyburgers and Sideshow Mel fries also are available, but the extra-bitter Sideshow Bob soup is off the menu—at least temporarily.

And be sure to save room for dessert! You haven't lived 'til you've tasted a big old gooey bowl of Flanders-style flan, or munched on Ms. Krabappel's famous crabapples, or chewed on a platter full of hot itchy cakes drenched in creamy Scratchy sauce.

And if you clean your plate you get a special surprise! (The surprise being the surprised look on our faces that you actually cleaned your plate!)

5 out of 5 stars Another Simpsons Triumph!.......2002-10-24

If the Simpsons are not on TV when you need your fix, plop down in your easy chair and open up one of the hilarious jam-packed comic books. Each book offers awesome full color illustrations along with bonus advertisements, shorts, etc. Here's what you get in this book:
"Be-Bop-Lisa"--Lisa ends up playing in a speed metal/jazz band with Otto creating a new musical sensation: "Spazz."

"The End of El Barto"--Police Chief Wiggum tells his story on how he finally caught the notorious graffiti vandal (or, so he thinks).

"The Greatest D'oh on Earth"--One of my favorites in this collection. The circus is in town, but Bart is forbidden to go because he refused to do his chores. Bart finagles the toadying Flanders boys into doing his chores for him ("Gutter cleaning's all the rage in the Holy Land") while he sneaks off to the circus. Dressed like a clown, Bart ends up in a tiny clown car with Krusty ("You never get used to the smell"). One funny box has Krusty running out of the car clutching his back: "My lower lumbar is killing me. Remind me to trade the clown car for a range rover." When Homer finds out Bart disobeyed him, the REAL show begins! Homer's stupidity is hilarious in this one.

"Dead to the Last Drop"--McBain encounters the mob at a fundraiser and deals with them in his own unique way. Krusty also makes an appearance in this one.

"I Shrink, Therefore I'm Small"--In this strip, we find out that Mr. Burns blames himself for causing the 1929 stock market crash when he gave off a horrendous burp moments before the panic began. Says Burns, "From that point on, I have supressed my need to peptically vent" (that explains a lot, actually). Now, that is something even Smithers didn't know! Anyway, Homer is shrunken down in order to man a surgical pod that will be used to dislodge Mr. Burns' internal blockage (unbeknownst to Homer, of course). Will Homer run this machine better than he runs Sector 7G at the nuclear power plant? What do you think?

"Edna of the Congo"--Bart's teacher plays a jungle woman out to save the sacred Purple Puma from poachers (or is she just looking for a man?).

"The Purple Prose of Springfield"--Bart doctors Lisa's diary creating a new literary fad in Springfield.

"Asleep At the Well"--A short featuring Springfield's favorite drunk, Barney Gumble. Find out what chief Wiggum means when he orders a glass of milk at Moe's.

          3 out of 5 stars Kinda good.......2000-06-30

This book, for me, is a combination of what makes the Simpsons great, and the bad that we don't see too much on TV. The book begins with "Be-Bop-A-Lisa" in which Lisa joins a band with Otto. This is one of the better ones in the collection. Next, a short called "The End Of El Barto" is a clever little police drama that is very funny. Unfortunately, the funniest thing about "The Greatest D'oh On Earth" is the title. Homer is annoyingly meaner than usual, and the plot goes nowhere. McBain next is okay. Then, "I Shrink, Therefore I'm Small" is an atrocity. I can't find one funny thing about this. Same goes for the next short. Finally, "The Purple Prose Of Springfield" is the best of the book. A Barney short at the end is good too.

5 out of 5 stars Just like the show.......1998-11-04

I think this is one of the best products of the Simpsons yet! It is so much like the show - maybe even better (My mom says I should read more). I'm glad to see that HarperPerennial has taken the time to make a really cool book like this. With 8 episodes in it, it's what every Simpson's fan should own.

2 out of 5 stars It's Simpsons, but not as good as the TV show........1998-07-06

This book is good, but it is not nearly as good as the full experience of the Simpsons that you get from the TV show. I read it once and kinda threw it in the corner and forgot about it. This is despite the fact that I am a Simpsons fanatic. I found I missed the voices from the show immensely. You lose an awful lot of the hidden jokes from the show and the humor just isn't there. Bottom line: If you absolutely can not pass this book up, buy it. Otherwise, find some other way to blow a couple bucks.

                    Book Description

Unlikely Passages is a "sailor's manifesto." Palley gave up a successful career as an art dealer while in his late 50s and embraced retirement with a vengeance, sailing away in his ship UNLIKELY and circling the globe. In doing so, he created his own universe—a small boat in a large ocean. Here, through a series of humorous anecdotes and illustrations, insightful observations, and practical information, Palley expounds his unique sailing philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars Impeccably written, tremendously entertaining.......2005-05-21

I received my copy from a non-sailing friend who proclaimed the book one of his favorites. I must agree with his assessment.

Unlikely Passages is equal parts philosophy and humor. There is considerable relevant musing, and a touch of travelogue. The prose is simply exquisite. I will continue to recommend this book to all who long for the cruising lifestyle, as its generous pearls of wisdom come without reservation or romance. Have I mentioned that it's funnier than hell?

This book is honest. I would consider it a good indicator whether one's mate was up to the lifestyle. If he/she feels compelled to put it down due to unsavory content, he/she should probably remain firmly planted to soil.

5 out of 5 stars a must for every nautical library.......2001-01-31

Reese doesn't sugarcoat, and he's a bit of a curmudgeon, but then again, I LIKE curmudgeons. Cuts to the heart, contains many great paragraphs, and several sentences I had to read aloud to my wife. Best off all, Reese gives a simple lesson in sailing at the end that cuts through the over-technical verbage I'd grown used to in searching for good sailing instruction. With a few crude hand-drawings Reese explains how sailboats work so that anyone could climb aboard and go!

                    2 out of 5 stars Just a giggle.......2000-07-10

A found it a struggle. Put it down many times but eventually made it to the end. The odd 'giggle' yes, but I expected better. If you really want a good one and laugh, get 'No Shoes Allowed' by Jan de Groot.

                    2 out of 5 stars Mildly Entertaining.......2000-01-02

I purchased the book because the reviews sounded good. I was disappointed wish I would have checked it out from the library instead. I found it only mildly amusing and felt that it was not written very well. If you are looking for a good sailing book, read John Kretschmer's "Flirting with Mermaids" or Susan Tyler Hitchcock's "Coming About" instead.

This is a nice book to have if you are a King Collector.

4 out of 5 stars Decent and up to date, but flawed..........2004-07-10

This large (in size rather than actual volume of text, as most of the book is occupied by photographs - the vast majority of them in black and white) guide to films, TV productions, fan videos and other filmed works based on or inspired by Stephen King's prose (and one poem...) is not particularly detailed, but certainly contains enough basic information, facts and trivia about almost every minor, major, cancelled or planned King production as of late 2002 to satisfy a King reader interested in the visual media.

Unfortunately, it leaves much to be desired. The layout is clunky at times, and there are a few truly pointless parts thrown in at the end most likely just to increase the volume (what in heaven's - or hell's - name would otherwise be the point in including such entries as Sean Cunningham's "House" [apparently listed because its protagonist is a "Stephen King-like writer"], "The Simpsons" episode "Maximum Homerdrive" [whose only relation to King is the title, as the book even admits], or some German porn flick which features a mad naked janitor [allegedly a ripoff of "The Shining's" Jack Torrance]?), and the book does not actually list *all* adaptations of King's writing (where is the best of the King shorts, "Strawberry Spring" from 2001?).

The most annoying thing about the guide, however, is the fact that it discusses the films in a chronological order rather than the proper, alphabetical one. This awkward (to put it mildly...) decision makes the book extremely inconvenient for quick checking, looking up particular titles, or comparing movies. Fortunately, there is an index, but still, flipping 87 pages to reach that index after reading an entry for one film, then flipping back 61 pages to find its sequel is infuriating.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Tidbits, But Gets Tiresome Fast.......2003-03-09

Creepshows: The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Guide got off on the wrong foot quick by crediting (On the lower back cover) the Berni Wrightson cover illustration to the woman who DESIGNED the cover layout. Very sloppy, especially considering Wrightson's rendition of "The Creep" is world-famous.....

The book covers all of the films that have sprung, however tenuous the connection may be (Children of the Corn 666), from Mr. King's stories. Stephen Jones does an interesting job of digging up little-known bits of trivia; I'm a King fanatic, and there were quite a few things here that were new to me. The irritating thing is the division of space in the book: A gem like The Green Mile gets the same amount of space as Children of the Corn. Jones devotes too much space to films that have nothing to do with King at all, such as the awful "House", covered because the main character is a King wannabe. The book is an American reprint of a British book, published in the UK by Titan Books, and the fact that Watson-Guptill couldn't even be bothered to Americanise the Brit spellings gets annoying after 100+ pages of "Favourite" and "Colour". Jones also seems to love the word "Eponymous"- He uses it on almost every page, and one would hope that someone has since bought him a Thesaurous. There's a brief King interview at the end, and the book is heavily illustrated with stills and poster reproductions. King fans will probably enjoy Creepshows a lot, but it could have been better....

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Agnes has an easy, literate writing style, with a sense of humor about herself and her life. What I particularly enjoyed were the descriptions of the times, especially Hollywood in the late teens. She also talks about the influence of Pavlova, Marie Rambert, Martha Graham, Anthony Tudor, and of course, was around all the great theatre and movie stars who were working with either her father or her uncle (Cecil B.). I highly recommend this book for dance history enthusiasts

This is the third of three basic guides by Facts on Demand press that I am very happy to have in my collection and to recommend to others. This one focuses, as its title suggests, on Public Records Online, going down to the county level, state by state.

It is not a tutorial in how to search public records, but it does includes helpful introductory chapters and the bottom line is that using this book is cheaper than out-sourcing the work, so if you have a need to search public records online, this book is certainly a valuable and cost-effective place to start.

The other two books from the same publisher that I recommend are "Find It Online" by Alan M. Schlein, and "Online Competitive Intelligence" by Helen Burwell, the Grand Dame of global information brokering who for many years published the absolutely top-notch Burwell World Directory of Information Brokers (I have the 1998 edition and it is still useful to me).

This book is designed in the same format that most of the BRB Publisher texts are. Opening chapters are of general interest, moving into state by state phone and online information followed up by several appendixes describing online vendor information companies, government URLs, and privacy information. The State chapter which is 80% of the book, is broken down as: State Agencies County Courts Federal Courts Local Courts and County Record Retrievers This section is very resourceful, giving in detail what is permitted in that location and who can get the information for you. It appears that several of the BRB publications have been combined, and added to, to create this excellent source.
