Book Description

Suzaan Boettger offers the first comprehensive history of the Earthworks movement in the United States, providing a fascinating and in-depth analysis of the monumental forms that initiated the broader genre of Land Art. Examining the art, the artists, their dealers and proponents, Boettger interprets Earthworks as a manifestation both of artists' personal stories and of the late 1960s social and political tumult.
Boettger overturns many commonly held notions of Earthworks' origins and intentions. She argues that Robert Smithson's work on the Dallas-Fort Worth airport stimulated his thinking and that his writing about it catalyzed the movement. The visionary environments that followed, often sculpted in expansive and remote western terrains, were idealized by Americans and Europeans alike as displays of cowboy bravado. Boettger identifies earthworkers Michael Heizer, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Morris, Walter de Maria, and Stephen Kaltenbach as former Californians whose treatment of the landscape reflects a western spirit. Her international purview integrates early work by the Europeans Barry Flanagan, Jan Dibbets, Richard Long, and Pino Pascali as precedents and parallels. Her examination of Earthworks' relationship to the ecology movement perceptively corrects a popular misconception about the artists' goals while acknowledging the social and cultural complexities of the period.
Insightful discussions of Carl Andre, Sol LeWitt, and Claes Oldenburg--in addition to the artists mentioned above--are accompanied by many rare and new photographs of both the art and its creators. Witty, accessible, and scrupulously researched, Earthworks constructs day-to-day chronologies of the development of the artistic movement and its intersections with the larger public events of the time, including specific accounts of galleries, exhibitions, and criticism. Boettger's dynamic social history and psychological insights bring new meaning to this pivotal movement that both embodied and disrupted contemporary notions of art, nature, society, and their relationship to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Boettger writes with a staggering authority.......2003-11-14

Flipping through Ms. Boettger's vitae my first impression is that she has been selling art history door to door, I began humming Willy Nelson's On the Road Again, as I scanned her long typed hodgepodge of one-night stands in whatever backwater bog had a check to write. Like the circuit pastors before her wherever the stagecoach stopped she hopped out and preached the gospel of contemporary art. A night course here, a lecture there, an awkward critique, the odd fifty-buck panel. I suspect all of that is behind her now: in this stunning debut it cannot be overstated that Ms. Boettger has produced a major historical document, one on which a McEvilley or a Krauss would be proud to place their stamp. It is meticulously researched-the sixty-nine page bibliography and notes alone are thick enough to bludgeon a thesis advisor-given that most art writing sings the rhythm of a rental lease I dreaded the 316 pages in front of me. But this writing does not drone like an academic sermon rather it engages with the timbre of a joyful story teller, I found myself in ClancyLand grabbing handfuls of pages in each sitting and looking forward to her next tale. Still her immense research underlies the imaginal prose and Ms. Boettger writes with a staggering authority, if I had not known better I would have assumed that this was her tenth book and not her first. I cannot imagine another art historian brave enough to dare a modification for at least a generation.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional art criticism.......2003-09-29

Earthworks is simply the best contemporary art critical text I have read in years. Suzaan Boettger ambitiously sets out to integrate aesthetic issues with historical analysis, and she succeeds gracefully and adroitly. Her writing style soars. The choice of illustrations is wonderful and the level of discussion is at all times intelligent without ever becoming murky or jargon filled. Yet Boettger does not shy away from linking the various schools which contributed to Earthworks, which requires significant explanation of terms and of labels. To read this book is to gain a significant education in minimalism, post-minimalism, conceputual art, process art and even body art and the author is careful to consider each group at an international level. The author endows this book with the excitement of the times. Even a casual reader will come away with the feeling of really have been there with Robert Smithson as the Spiral Jetty was built. The distinct personalities of the players in this arena come through yet the presentation is never gossipy. The author pays enormous attention to detail when it matters, but the focus is never petty. Boettger takes chances, like including a timeline at the end, which is rare in an art book of this sort, and she succeeds magnificently. I can't say enough good things about Earthworks. There is not a disappointing page in the entire book.

                    Description:
This paper introduces questions pertaining to the nature of organizational learning and how it can be measured and modeled. The four papers that constitute this special issue on organizational learning are summarized. The nature of organizational learning found in these papers is described in terms that extend a commonly accepted definition of individual learning. A model of organizational learning consistent with these papers and based on a socially-situated, information-processing view of learning is developed along with associated measures of learning appropriate to the models. Aspects of a model of organizational learning and associated measures are then presented along with suggestions for further investigation in the area of organizational learning.

*Basis for the anime-manga phenomenon *Lord of the Rings epic fantasy as seen through a wacky Otaku lens *Slayers has entertained fans in the U.S. for more than 10 years *Part of TOKYOPOP's exciting new novel line

The whole world is after our favorite small-chested sorceress, Lina Inverse, when she learns that a bounty has been put on her head! The real surprise comes when she discovers that it was none other than Rezo, the Red Priest, who placed the price on her head! Lina, Gourry and Zelgadis battle it out with the Red Priest that they thought they had defeated two months earlier. Is this Rezo the real deal?

                        Customer Reviews:

                        4 out of 5 stars Episodes 18-26 of "Slayers".......2005-04-28

With this 3rd "Slayers" novel, we still have not been introduced to Amelia, but Zelgadiss does return and the miko Sylphiel is a part of this. As one might expect, the story centers around the return of the Red Priest Rezo and the mystery surrounding it. As in the anime, Lina and Gourry have a bounty on their heads and they set off to the city of Sairaag in order to learn the truth behind Rezo's re-appearance.

Amelia being MIA aside, there are a number of differences from the anime. For starters, Sylphiel comes off as much more competent. She's already working with Zelgadiss by the time Lina and Gourry arrive. While she does have her feelings for Gourry (which doesn't come through as clearly in this novel since TokyoPop decided to translate the honorific "sama" to "master", CMP having translated the same honorific to "darling" in the anime -- and people wonder why I think honorifics should be left in the text untranslated), she's no ditz and very powerful.

Instead of Amelia or the swordsman Zangulus, there's the character of Lantz, who's a fighter that had a presence in the 2nd novel. He's rather uninteresting as a character and it is no wonder the anime never used him.

Also, Mazoku are present in this novel as well. It is interesting that Hajime-sensei has had the Mazoku presence from the begining whereas the anime ignored it until the "Slayers Next" series. Their dealings with Rezo were very interesting and even though I knew this story from the anime, the end was rather surprising to me.

Bottom line: another interesting "Slayers" novel. TokyoPop continues to seem to tone down the orignal material and leave out the important Japanese honorifics (used mainly by and for the priest and miko) but it is still worth buying if you are a "Slayers" fan.

                        Book Description

His outrageous monologues made him a legend on tv's The Kids in the Hall.  Now he's back--with the life story only he could tell.

"My goal is not to shock and horrify, but to tell the truth.  And if that truth shocks and horrifies, well .  .  .  maybe you should get out more."

Spinning martini-fueled tales from his stool in his favorite gay bar, acid-tongued raconteur Buddy Cole became one of The Kids in the Hall's most beloved and enduring characters.  Now, brought to you by Kids star Scott Thompson with series writer Paul Bellini, Buddy Babylon takes you on a jaw-dropping tour of Buddy's flashy, trashy life, filled with tales of poignant, heart-wrenching romance, lurid sexual debauchery, the birth of synchronized swimming, and the ugly, never-before-revealed truth behind the Prettiest Feet in Quebec contest.

Join Marco (Buddy's cosmetically challenged sidekick), Cornygirl (the loyal corncob doll who rarely leaves his side), and a cast of unforgettably offbeat characters as Buddy blazes a trail across the deep Canadian forest, through the darkest corners of the big city, and back to his signature barstool.  From his humble beginnings as the twenty-third child of poor pig farmers, to his moment in the spotlight in the tabloids, Buddy Babylon lays bare a lifetime of madness, chaos, and things your mother warned you about--the essential Buddy Cole.

After Kids' six-year run on CBS, HBO, Comedy Central, and the CBC in Canada, Scott Thompson joined the cast of the critically acclaimed HBO series The Larry Sanders Show.  He is also a frequent guest on Politically Incorrect and The Late Show, and continues to do stand-up comedy, which includes performances in the character of Buddy Cole.

4 out of 5 stars Got you back.......2003-09-23

                        A first-person account of Canada's most (in)famous barhopping ...
The road starts with a leap-year birth, and follows him on as the winner Canada's most beatiful feet', into a cocaine fueld populated by lesbian wives, lovers, and a particularly glamerous pig.
Which leads all the way back to a barstool, back home in Canada.

The 'Kids' now Scott Thompson, with the aid of show-writer Paul Bellini, ontroduce Charles Butterick Cole.

1 out of 5 stars Sort of mediocre.......2002-09-27

Buddy Cole is much more appealing on stage than in the written word. Some funny gay bits, and interesting Toronto references if you should ever go there. Save the money to go see KITH's latest tour when it comes near you (esp. for the sarcastic 9/11 references). What is holding Scott (and KITH) back from really cutting sketches, huh? What about Canada's loony PC censorship, academic free-speech harrassment, massive immigration problems, and the fact that salaries are 1/2 to 2/3 of US? Look to Python and Benny Hill for examples ..

5 out of 5 stars Buddy is Brilliant.......2002-05-29

I loved this book soo much, I could not put it down. I kept imagining Buddy with his great lisp telling his life story and it made it so much more fun. This is a book that nay Buddy or KITH fan will enjoy. I reccomend it wholeheartedly, hilarious!

When I finished this book I was disapointed... because I didn't want it to end! If you want a good laugh, I'd recomend it, especially for the hardcore KITH fan. I think I may start reading it again now... :)

My only problem with this book is that it made me laugh uncontrollably in public. Repeatedly, I found myself sitting alone in some public area with tears streaming down my face, trying to maintain composure while convulsing with laughter. More, Scott, more!!!!

Photographer Peter Milne went on the road with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who allowed him to take pictures of the tour.

These wonderful black and white shots are most candid, many catching band members unaware, or, at best, unwilling, making for some amazing images.

A bonus is the forward written by Nick Cave, who expresses his feelings about the photographer in his own interminable way, making this alone worth purchase.

                            Brilliant!

Plus, the book covers theft prevention, legal obligations, and the managment of natural, technological, and incited emergencies. In all, it's the most thorough introduction available to the inventory management profession.

                                  3 out of 5 stars exhibit 2-7 K Factor Example.......2006-04-16

the example provided for determining the carrying costs for 2 years seem to be over stated. In the example the additonal carrying cost of the items that have not moved in two years seems to include the Item cost for each year twice. It shows $ 4,449 that has accumulated after two years. This is should show $ 2,528. Only the Carrying cost should be added for each year to come to the additional carrying cost. The author seems to have included the cost of the items in each year. This will affect the breakeven days.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Inventory Essentials.......2006-04-10

This book lives up to its title. It is an easy to read introduction to inventory management. If you are new to the concept or are an empiric manager in the process of formalizing your education, this is a good start. Don't look for in depth information or case studies.

On the recommendations side, the author left the topic of safety and occupational health out of the book. It would be good to include this topic in the following edition.

The most recent research into decision-making suggests that the most effective leaders are the ones who are able to adapt their decision-making style over time as their roles and responsibilities change. Discover a proven, easily understandable way to assess decision-making style with the Decision-Making Style Inventory.

The Decision-Making Style Inventory is a validated and reliable 20-item Likert assessment that identifies an individual's decision-making style preference. The assessment measures four dimensions. Two structural styles--Systematic and Spontaneous, and two processing styles--Internal and External. In this Inventory the two dimensions are combined to find a preferred decision-making style: Systematic-Internal, Systematic-External, Spontaneous-Internal, and Spontaneous-Eternal, plotted on a four-quadrant chart. The Inventory is a powerful tool that can be used in numerous developmental situations such as formal leadership training, coaching, and even performance appraisals.
