Book Description
Why does the distinction between high and popular art persist in spite of postmodernist predictions that it should vanish? Departing from the conventional view that such distinctions are class-related, Wesley Shrum concentrates instead on the way individuals form opinions about culture through the mediation of critics. He shows that it is the extent to which critics shape the reception of an art form that determines its place in the cultural hierarchy. Those who patronize "lowbrow" art--stand-up comedy, cabaret, movies, and popular music--do not heed critical opinions nearly as much as do those who patronize "highbrow" art--theater, opera, and classical music. Thus the role of critics is crucial to understanding the nature of cultural hierarchy and its persistence. Shrum supports his argument through an inquiry into the performing arts, focusing on the Edinburgh Fringe, the world's largest and most diverse art festival.
Beginning with eighteenth-century London playhouses and print media, where performance art criticism flourished, Shrum examines the triangle of mediation involving critics, spectators, and performers. The Fringe is shown to parallel modern art worlds, where choices proliferate along with the demand for guidance. Using interviews with critics and performers, analysis of audiences, and published reviews as well as dramatic vignettes, Shrum reveals the impact of critics on high art forms and explores the "status bargain" in which consumers are influenced by experts in return for prestige.

my elder son (4 1/2) loves these books. they are fun, simple and educational. these books provide little experiments you can do at home.
Book Description
Michel Rabagliati delivers another charming, thinly veiled memoir.
Michel Rabagliati crafts stories that are easily accessible to both young-adult and adult audiences with his semifictional protagonist, Paul. This time Paul takes another step into adulthood by moving out of his parents’ house and into his first apartment with his girlfriend, enjoying life’s pleasures as well as confronting its challenges.

Terrific example of reminiscence-as-art.......2005-08-22
This is the third in a graphic-novel series about Paul (last name unknown, I think), a young freelance graphics designer, who shares an apartment in Montreal in 1983 with Lucie, whom he met in art school but who now studies languages. This is a slice-of-life style of thing -- not a lot of "action" in the dramatic sense, no real beginning or end (just a pregnant pause). Much of the book is about how they met five or six years earlier, how they learned about each other (Wow! She reads comics!) and met each other's parents, and so on. It's also about the gay art instructor (and how Paul deals with that fact) who turned their worlds upside down by taking them away from the precise rendition of vacuum cleaners in pencil and teaching them instead the principles of design, and who also takes them on a field trip to New York -- which Paul thinks of as "the big city," as if Montreal were just a village! And it's about Aunt Janette and her travels, and about Lucie's two small nieces, whom she and Paul babysit one weekend. And that's pretty much the plot. These are all very likable people, and it's an absolutely delightful experience. The artwork is rectangular panels, four to nine to the page, all in straight black-and-white line drawings, but the rendition of the surroundings is representational; I have no doubt a Montreal native would know exactly where each scene was set. The people are simply drawn, too, but the expressions and postures are just evocative enough to pull you completely into Paul's and Lucie's world. In fact, the photo at the very end may catch you off-guard -- as I admit it did me. Very nice stuff.

Presbyterian Hymnal CD and Vista Compatibility.......2007-06-20
This CD is a great way to copy and paste the songs of the Presbyterian Hymnal into Word documents, Powerpoint, etc. We also use it to import hymns into Mediashout for projection. One thing - to get it to work with Vista requires that two files be manually copied - dirdib.drv and macromix.dll into your c:\windows folder. Otherwise, you'll get error messages saying that the files can not be copied because the disk is full. What's happening is that the new Vista security features are preventing the files from being copied.
So where do you get these two files? Install and run the hymnal CD on a Windows XP computer. The files are only available while the program is running. They are removed when the program is closed. So - while the program is running, copy them to a floppy disk, flash drive or whatever and then manually copy them into the c:\windows folder on your Vista computer. You'll need administrator priveleges to do so.
After that, the CD runs as well on a Vista computer as on our XP computer.
Every Presbyterian Church Should Have This........2007-04-28
We understand that the Presbyterian Church is at the start of making a new hymnal (due to debut in 2014) to replace this one. Their theory is that every generation needs a new hymnal and if you look at the preceding hymnals (the blue or green hymnal of 1933, the maroon hymnal of 1955 and the ill-fated Worshipbook of the 70s), you see their point.
Even so, this one gets most things right and will be hard to beat.
The second half of the 20th century experienced what has been called the Hymn Explosion, and many of the best hymns of that time are represented in this book which is still called the "new" hymnal in most Presbyterian churches. There are some works that were hard to introduce to congregations that are now among their most beloved hymns represented: Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ, Here I Am Lord, etc. Fred Pratt Green, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Jane Parker Huber and Hal Hopson are all represented here, as well they ought to be.
There are also some under-utilized gems in it as well, songs like "Come O Spirit" (for Pentecost) and "God Bless Your Church" (for an anniversary) that have also found their way into other denominational hymnals.
All in all it is a great hymnal for expanding the congregations "Favorites" repertoire without being too jarring.
LindaJo McKim and company did yeoman's work in creating it. The layout is according to the liturgical year. The indexes are thorough and easy to use. The print is clear; the size is comfortable to hold while singing. There is a non-denominational version of this hymnal available too, from the publisher, for non-Presbyterian congregations who find it to their liking.
Four Stars, and a Half. (Good Resource, but.......).......2001-04-25
This is a great hymnal, that was thoughtfully produced, and obviously had a huge amount of time dedicated to its production. Presbyterians now have a hymnal that goes straight through the liturgical year, from Advent to Pentecost/Whitsunday, and beyond. This hymnal also contains all the Psalms, so essential to tradition Presbyterian/Reformed Worship, set to music.
The redeeming quality of the Psalms offsets the fact that many words were to changed for "inclusiveness". I do not always have a problem with accepting everyone into the church, but when great hymns are changed from their original text I wonder... For example hymn 262 reads "God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand", when D.C. Roberts wrote "God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand" in 1876 as our National Hymn. Little things like this make me wonder how true other less-well known hymns were translated.
Also included are a number of hymns in foreign tongues, such as Native American Languages, and Korean. This are wonderful additions to congregations with large numbers of members who are of different ethnic origins, but I attend an all-white church, not because we do not welcome people of other races but simply because the community in which I live is close to 99% white, and minorities have teir own strong churches locally, therefore these hymns are useless to us, and could have been replaced by some older hymns that are trditional favorites.
All in all, this is a good hymnal and does remain true to God's will, but I much prefer "The Hymnbook" of 1955 or "The Hymnal" of 1933 or "The Trinity Hymnal". These books contain many more common hymns that many of us who were reared in the Presbyterian Church, or any other Protestant denomination, would recognize.
I guess that if we were truly Presbyterian we would only sing Psalms- acapella, but I think hymnwriters, offer everyone a better chance to praise and worship God.

Ethnic and Cultural DIversity in Christian Hymnology.......2005-07-25
If you could have only one hymnal in your piano bench, this would be the one. The traditional Christian hymns in lush arrangements in the British style, with a great diversity of Christian hymn and praise songe from other non-European cultures. Some hymns have lyrics in various world langauges. A fitting tribute to the universality of the Christian tradition and the union of spirits in praise of the Divine.

One of the best hymnals.......2007-01-12
This hymnal has some of the best of the old and the new. All it is missing is "Spirit Song" but it does have "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky" which I had never seen the music for before. Love it!

Customer Reviews:
INTERESTING BOOK.......2007-07-24
RECEIVED PROMPTLY. HAVE BEEN READING THIS AND HAVE FOUND A GREAT DEAL OF INTERESTING INFORMATION.
Save your money, don't buy the book.......2007-01-16
I want to break this book down for you. Look at it in 3 parts.
1st part- Common knowledge and same mission statement repeated over and over again.
2nd part- Plugging her website which is more $ to spend.
3rd part and comprises HALF of the total book- Telling you to donate food to charity. Nothing wrong with donating food, but it takes half the book to tell you this.
I will take the 17.99 that I spent at a bookstore for this as a learned lesson.
You can really save money if you tried but most don't want to make the effort.......2006-04-15
I agree you don't need the book. If most people were wise they would go to the library and borrow the book. If your library does not have it request it.
You can save money with double coupons not every place in the country has double coupon stores. But in our region we do. So your consumers request your stores do it. Their are groups through yahoo groups that teach you how to save money. I find the people who critique the most about supposively not saving money don't really want to make the effort. Let's face it coupons are a lot of work. Stuff this woman teaches I knew for the most part. I am always learning. But you can get deals with coupons at your local department stores too. It is what people are willing to compromise to do. Most people who don't want to change their brand favorites are definately not going to fair well with coupons. It is all about flexability. Not to mention I think her goal was to in the end help the needy. I think that is commendable in itself. In fact I have donated several items this way. I am all for helping in our community by doing her tactics because that is what is about. In this economy you never know if it could be you being the recipiant of having to depend on the local food pantry. If anything else I think that is what the point of the book is. I found out through the guidepost about this book. Later I found it at the local library. I live in a rural area but I drive to shop too. I just do my shopping where I work. If you go out to get your hair done, work, driving the kids to school then make use of your trips. There are lots of people who live in the rural areas and travel one time a week or once a month. It is a matter of planning.
Don't waste your money!.......2006-02-22
Don't bother with the book... save your dollars and go to the website for the few good tips. If you already use coupons then there is nothing new here... If you're a working mom then you don't have the time to play around going from store to store (and with gas prices these days, is it really worth it to run from store to store anyway).
Finally, if you live in a rural area, as I do, it's not worth it at all because we just don't have the variety of stores from which to shop. Not a good use of your valuable dollar.
Save money with no effort!.......2006-02-03
I have tried many times in the past to use coupons, but was never able to stay "organized" enough to see a real difference.
With Coupon mom's book and website, organizing my coupons, and knowing when to use them takes no effort at all, even my 6 year old participates! We are saving 50-60% consistently now! Thanks Coupon Mom!
