Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Customer Reviews:
Inaccurate, fun on a superficial level, not good for research.......2007-05-16
The reader can immediately appreciate the layout of the book, with its full-color renditions filling each page (about 8 figures per page). There are, however, a few problems. While the colors and textile patterns are decent, the shapes are consistently off. All the figures have, more or less, the same shape, which is inaccurate. Corsets and varying understructures affect the shape of costumes in real life, but in this book it is unclear. The men and women look about the same, with the same bulky waistlines, wide necks, and longish boxy torsos.
While decently researched, the illustrator's talents fall short, and the costumes are, ultimately, inaccurate. The waistlines are fairly consistently off (often too low), the skirts have the same basic shape: a roundish lumpy farthingale, regardless of period, so that the 18th century panniers or the odd Elizabethan wheel farthingale, or the many mid-19th century dresses ALL look the same.
If you are looking for colorful drawings your average semi-pro costume designer might make, regardless of accuracy, then this book is for you. It is, after all, fun to flip through and is somewhat close to styles it represents, but its many inaccuracies (generous) because I do like flipping through colorful pictures and enjoy playing "find the historical error" with the figures, but if you are new to historical costume and want to know what things really looked like in the past, this book is not for you.
Moral of the story: Beware the many inaccuracies--this book is full of them!
Great jumping off point.......2005-08-15
As a member of a Middle Ages recreation group, I found some fantastic images that inspire me to create the garb they're showing. Unfortunately, Mr. Peacock doesn't provide a full bibliography of his sources so it is difficult to get a true feel for the context of the clothes. I emailed the publisher for more information, and they have yet to return my email...2 months later.
I would definately recommend this book for anyone trying to get a good overview of garb and costume, but only if they do not care about being able to document exactly where the pattern and pieces come from.
Wonderful depiction of fashion through the ages.......2004-10-15
I agree with one reviewer that you don't get a sense of fashion for one prolonged period. For example, you get several pictures of what a Russian lady would wear in 1876, but not the men, and sometimes not what they would wear in other time periods. However, I still reccommend this book because of its color pictures, the way the fashion starts as far back as the 11th century up through the 21st, and how the garmet details are explained.
I'm writing a book where vampires are prominent and they all still wear clothes from their time frame, so this book was a huge help. At least I was able to write the correct names of the garments, especially the women and know what they would be wearing over the centuries. I reccommend this book if what you need is simple, like just a general sense of what a woman and man was wearing in the 1730's etc., and what the clothes were called. It's not that in depth, but is still very useful. If you can find it cheap (used) it's worth it and check you library for it too, that's where I first saw this, in my local library.
Details, Details and More Amazing Details!.......2000-09-17
I BORROWED THIS BOOK FROM A COWORKER AND NEARLY CRIED WHEN I GAVE IT BACK. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SUPERMAGNIFICENT, AS WELL AS THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE HISTORY OF EACH INDIVIDUAL STYLE. SO METICULOUS WERE THE ILLUSTRATIONS, THAT I WAS ABLE TO SKETCH SEVERAL OF THE RENDERINGS, MYSELF. THIS BOOK... TRULY AWE-INSPIRING AND MOST DEFINATELY PRICELESS!!!
...good for reference........1999-11-18
Like it's been said, a good book to refer back to from time to time... if nothing else

Graham Nolan is fantastic!.......2006-08-03
As with the first volume of "The Graham Nolan Sundays", Volume 2 is highly entertaining stuff that is very much unlike anything else in comics strips today. Graham Nolan is a fantastic adventure artist who struts his stuff well here, and the stories are just complex enough to be involving!
This is the best adventure strip in America right now!

Book Description
A magnificent visual book in full color with over 150 photos and notes about the making of the major feature film by the award-winning director (The Lion King, Titus) about one of the most famous artists and feminists in the twentieth century, starring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina, coming from Miramax Films.
This is the true story of Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, the larger-than-life painters who became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history and whose tempestuous love affair, landmark journeys to America, and outrageous personalities made them legendary. Filmed mainly in Mexico, the movie traces Frida's life from her unbridled high school days to her death at age 47.
This vivid book includes production notes, details on cinematography, set and costume design, and visual effects, music, notes by director Taymor, interviews with the cast, excerpts from books about Frida, reproductions of artwork, a historical timeline, and background sketches on the real figures portrayed in the movie.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book with Invaluable Content.......2004-06-18
Of all of Newmarket's wonderful series of Pictorial Moviebooks, this one is my favorite. The sidebars identifying many of the "real people" who appear in the film are helpful, but the best part is the side-by-side comparison of the paintings & the moments in Frida's life which inspired them. The wedding sequence is especially illuminating: the scene from the shooting script, the stills of Frida [Salma Hayek] examining herself in the mirror in her lace wedding gown, & the picture of the actual wedding painting all combine to reveal Frida's essential self-invention.
If you loved this film, you will definitely want THIS book which supplements BOTH the film & the Herrera biography.
A must for anyone who loved the moive.......2003-02-01
This book is a visual feast! Great photos and stories
behind the making of the moive...
A must for anyone who loved the moive .
But no mention or photo of Lila Downs???
Did I miss it??
Her fabulous singing is a vitual part of the film!!
I still gave the books five stars....but what gives??
Fun to simply page through.......2003-01-06
Enhanced with an informative Foreword by Kayden Herrera and with introductions by Julie Taymor and Salma Hayek, Frida: Bringing Frida Kahlo's Life And Art To Film is a superb companion title to Julie Taymor's electrifying and artistic movie "Frida", showcasing the true story of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the Mexican painters whose acclaimed work and passionate love affair distinguished them during the twentieth century. Featuring full-color photographs on virtually every page which illustrate the screenplay text, as well as interviews with cast and crew members and production notes, Frida is fun to simply page through, a highly recommended addition to academic film libraries, and is a "must-have" acquisition for admirers of the movie celebrating one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable female artists.

There are many nice little pieces selected by Dr. Suzuki in this book. Most of them are written for two violins. These pieces can be enjoyed by anybody who is above Volume 3. They can be used for sight-reading, or brothers and sisters or friends can get together and play these pieces for fun. They are wonderful for group recital performances, too.

Book Description
Magicians use more than just mirrors, string, and sleight of hand to deceive their audience. Those who are masters at this trade have developed an arsenal of techniques to manipulate people. Every action and utterance on stage and off is precisely planned to achieve a specific effect. Abracadabra! is an insider's look at what goes on at a magic show, behind-the-scenes, and in the mind of the magician. Nathaniel Schiffman explains the principles of deception, exposing those seemingly innocent motions that conceal vital actions from onlookers; how the conjurer uses misdirection of space and time to mislead the audience; how silly and simple optical illusions can fool us; and what to look for during a magic show. Also explored in detail is the world of offstage magic. Some "magicians" use various techniques in life to deceive and influence you, yet these magicians don't boast of their magic talent, because they are advertisers, politicians, generals, spies, con artists, computer programmers, movie directors, faith healers, psychics, and others. These "magicians" work to make you buy their product, believe in their cause, and influence your thinking from the time you get up in the morning, until you go to bed at night. This is not a "how to" book for aspiring magicians, but a layperson's guide to methods used to mislead or fool you. Lighthearted and informal, Abracadabra! will fascinate anyone interested in knowing how one person can control many. Included are hands-on experiments, magic tricks, and reader participation segments. You'll soon see that magicians don't just manipulate playing cards and animals; they manipulate you.
Customer Reviews:
Very thorough and entertaining.......2007-08-11
This book did not disappoint. A well researched body of work and written for the average layperson. While some of the chapters stalled in certain areas, the overall work is great for those who must figure out how these magicians do the "impossible" tricks they do.
Abracadaba.......2007-03-08
I ENJOY THE BOOK IT WAS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AS WELL AS IT WAS INTERTAINING.
Magicians use more than smoke and mirrors to deceive audiences.......2006-01-02
Magicians use more than smoke and mirrors to deceive audiences, but their secrets are rarely revealed. Writer and magic enthusiast Nathaniel Schiffman's Abracadabra! Secret Methods Magicians And Others Use To Deceive Their Audience provides a lay reader's guide to common methods used to fool or mislead audiences. While experiments and magic tricks are included, the focus here is on how a magician manipulates the audience toward belief: an intriguing expose is created.
Customer Reviews:
Nutty book.......2006-06-30
The premise of this book is that magicians are bad people who are trying to -- gasp -- fool you, and you should be prepared to stop them from doing this by knowing their secrets. The author fails to understand that performance magic is intended to entertain us by mystifying us. Although magic is more than its secrets, without its secrets it can't perform its basic function.
awsome! Fantastic! very good source!.......1999-05-29
Nathaniel really knows what hes talking about basically every bodys a magician including the Gover ment he tells it in a way that i have never seen before i have tons of illusions books with drawings but this book is the iceing on the Cake! wow! unbelieve cool! the lear jet secret in the book was amazing! it all made scents theres one part i had right its the very loud music to cover the movment of the plane thats really cleaver! i was on the right track! who knew amazing! if you want to know how everything is done then this is the book!
Do not start with this book!!!.......1999-01-04
If you start with this book to learn magic, only in that way will you be disapointed. But if you have at least some years experience in magic will you appreciate this very interesting book and valuable thoughts.
As bad as it gets!!!.......1999-01-03
Random thoughts. Lightly organized. Pseudo intelectualism. Pedantic. All that effort wasted to explain card tricks and look smart at parties.
Slightly Better than Herbert Becker's, and that's not much !.......1998-07-12
This book was created by gathering a number of random thoughts available from the Internet with very little effort made to verify sources. Go to the WEB yourself and search on "Magic": the results will be as insightful. Waste of money !!! Books by Mark Wison, Bill Tarr or from the Dover collection are highly recommended over the collection of... STUPID and INCOHERENT thoughts.
Book Description
Economist, actor, author, and former quiz show host Ben Stein teamed up with investment psychologist Phil DeMuth to examine a century of stock market data and discovered a profound and original investment truth: Yes, you can time the market! In their instant investment classic Yes, You Can Time the Market!, Stein and DeMuth show investors simple, readily available measurements that tell them when it's time to invest in stocks, bonds, real estate, or cash. Written for the investor who wants to preserve capital and build wealth steadily, this book offers prudent, bedrock advice for anyone who can no longer afford to play games with their money.
Customer Reviews:
No you cant !.......2007-09-30
A good primer on analysis, moving averages, and cheap vs. expensive. There is a major hole in this book: When is it time to sell? You will find no analysis. Ben and Phil only make the case for when to enter a position in a S&P500 index fund, and when to avoid adding to the position. When the indicator suggests stocks are high, buy t-bills until the indicator changes.
If you use one of the timing indicators to put money in, what about taking it out, thereby avoiding a "reversion to the mean"? If you are only timing an entry and not an exit, you aren't timing... So in my opinion, NO you can't time the market (not by reading this book).
A big disappointment.......2007-03-30
I had previously read, and definitely recommend, a book by the same authors "Yes, You Can Still Retire Comfortably!". It was straightforward, practical, to the point. And in that book, they referred many times to this earlier book of theirs. I thought ... wow! ... if these guys can make market timing as simple as they made retirement planning, the world is a wonderful place.
I was wrong. Simple? Yes. Totally simple. But, let me save you the time. While making a convincing case, they "prove" that only a fool (and I do not mean that with a capital F) would have bought stocks since about 1984. If you believe that, buy this book.
In short ... buy their retirement book. Skip this one.
Awful. Just awful!.......2006-03-02
The authors not only completely fail to recognize the roll that randomness plays on their poorly conceived "strategy", they also profess to being able to eliminate the single biggest risk of investing in the stock market. If their secret really worked, why sell it to anyone? Why not invest everything they have, make a killing, and retire to a country of their own? The worst part is that this pair has access to DFA funds. That's a shame. It gives them credibility when none is deserved. I guess Ben wants to win all the money back (from other peoples' wallets) that he lost in his last game show . . .
Specious Pseudo-Scientific Drivel.......2005-10-07
The authors provide a lot of sophisticated-sounding analysis to substantiate their "novel" approach to market timing. As evidenced by some of the reviews on this site, this approach succeeds in garnering the authors their share of believers.
However, their analysis is in reality quite unsophisticated. Scratch beneath the surface and you will come across profound breakdowns in logic and a host of invalid analytical techniques. Some of the book's most egregious failings are detailed by reviewer Gaetan Lion. I recommend you read his review---he hits the nail right on the head.
Time the market -- yes, but there's a better way.......2005-07-21
Ben Stein is a "celebrity" of sorts, and his name is associated with money, hosting the TV game show Win Ben Stein's Money. It is only natural for him to write an investment book. I don't know why Stein and his co-author decided to promote this particular investment strategy. Nevertheless, I think this book would familiarize novice investors with some essential terms and concepts, so it might be a good introductory lesson in investing.
For a system to use for real investing, I would recommend perusing the columns of Paul Merriman and Mark Hulbert on the CBSMarketWatch website. They have tracked the performance of a simple moving average market timing system. It is about as good as buy and hold, but with less risk, because it takes you out of the market in severe downturns. You have to religiously follow it, of course, even when all your emotions are telling you the opposite. This is a problem with any trading system, of course.
Another system followed by Hulbert is seasonal investing -- only being in the market at certain times of the year when gains are most likely.
With a little effort, one can find better market timing systems -- the information is free on the web. However, I've read Stein's books for basic knowledge. I refuse to follow his ideas slavishly, and I wouldn't recommend anyone else do so, either.
