Plato was the first great figure in Western philosophy to assess the value of the arts; he famously argued in the Republic that traditionally accepted forms of poetry, drama, and music are unsound, claiming they are conducive to warped ethical standards, detrimental to the psyche, and purveyors of illusions about important matters in human life. This view has been widely rejected; but Christopher Janaway here argues that Plato's hostile case is a more coherent and a more profound challenge to the arts than has sometimes been supposed. Very Readable, Interesting tales.......2007-03-03
I am glad Mr. Archer picked up a few stories whilst in jail; his Prison diaries were boring to say the least. Each of the tales here is about a con or at least what appears to be a con and does span from the USA to the UK to Italy to India. Many of the stories are unpredictable which is what I enjoy.

I loved this book! It is whimsical, nonsensical, funny and beautifully drawn. You will find yourself identifying with these cats.

Life on the comedy club circuit, not a guide to being funny.......2004-06-17
First of all, what this book is not: It is not about how to be funny, nor is it an analysis of what humour is. The title is blatantly misleading. The book itself is not funny, because these are comedians describing things that happened to them, not attempting to get the reader to laugh.
This is a collection of first-person narratives in which comedians reminisce about performing in comedy clubs, especially at the beginning of their careers when they were unknowns. Their stories are surprisingly similar - struggling for stage time, desperate for money, honing their craft, and so on. The stories are repetitive and, after awhile, seem interchangeable. At times the narrators engage in a bit of introspection about why some things are funny and some are not, but one has to search for those analytical moments. To a large extent, these comedians just kind of "wing it" and have trouble articulating why one joke is hilarious while another leads to dead silence.
Of the 30-plus comedians interviewed for the book, I've heard of about one third of them. The most famous participants are Richard Belzer, Phyllis Diller, and Lily Tomlin.
Now Am I Funny???.......2003-01-17
Let's get this much straight: this book will not make unfunny people funny, but it will certainly provide an entertaining read. The comics whom Dougherty interviews are all successful and, ergo, extremely amusing. The author manages to capture their anecdotes and reflections in a tight framework which could, conceivably, provide a useful blueprint for the novice comic. It's a fun, zippy read, even if you aren't looking for a future in stand-up. I am a fan of Belzer, Pat Cooper, and Susie Essman to name a few of those profiled, so it was fun to read their responses to some of Dougherty's queries about their backgrounds, their missteps, etc.

I have a friend who thinks she is funny. She isn't. I think one of the hardest things to do is teaching someone how to be funny. This book comes very close. It's more than just "timing" (that trite often used excuse some use in explaining how to amuse others) and it's more than just having that innate natural ability. Through the many interviews with those that are professionally funny, Mr. Dougherty manages to highlight and tie together the lessons that these jokemasters, prop comics and humorists relate. With their varying comedic styles, Mr. Dougherty successfully documents these truths in a way that they make sense. Comedy is hard. Teaching it is harder. Will this help my comedically-challenged friend? God...I hope so. But it's a good book and I liked it.

This is a beautiful book full of terrific songs (all expertly arranged) and great writing. Jean Ritchie divides her life into thirteen chapters and weaves two or three songs into each one. The songs illustrate the memoir, and the memories provide a context for the songs. And the whole thing is so tightly organized that it reads like a novel.

I found myself laughing while reading this book, and crying, at times, too. Jean has a style of writing that makes the reader feel like he/she's there. The people come to life, and you find yourself living with them in the Kentucky Cumberlands. I don't think I've ever even been there, and this book made me homesick.
Of course, if you're looking for crime and action, this isn't the book for you. This book is about 'down home' living when chores were really chores and food was home grown. In ways, it was a simpler kind of life, but in other ways, it was a lot harder.
You won't find this information in a history book. History books always put a tint on the past, leaving out peoples' mistakes and their imperfections. This is a real family story told by a real family person. It's evident that the two most important things in the writer's life were her family and their musical life together.
On a different level, I can't tell you, as an amateur genealogist, how valuable this book is to me. Every page has stories about the people who grew up in the time and place of my kin, many of them even mentioned by name. The next time I read it, I will be gleaning information for my tree! And this is one of the few books that I will read again and again.
Good job, Jean Ritchie. Thank you for bringing the Cumberlands of Kentucky to life for your readers.

The book is absolutely beautiful. It makes Jean Ritchie's songs more relevant, to read the words and the stories she associates with them. The mention of mining in the last chapter saddens me because I know what happened to all such communitites when the coal ran out. The book is beautiful.

This book is the 1992 update of character statistics , with new characters, new villains, and gear for the Marvel Superhero Roleplaying Game.
A really good idea doing these, and they were certainly looked forward to by all, to see the changes in favorite characters, and even the silly morts that were included and highly amusing.
A pity all this stopped. I'd probably still be getting them now.

Great book on leadership.......2007-09-09
I recently bought this book from Amazon and really liked it. The book breaks down the leadership process and helps the reader to achieve the goals individually and then 'laterally' lead his/her team to achieve the same. Simple advice coupled with relevant examples make it easy to read and implement. Highly recommended for anyone working in a team environment.
The Goal Setting Chapter is worth the price of admission.......2007-02-21
Overall this book covers a topic we all understand, but maybe dont implement or think too much about. So - from that standpoint, its a good book to review basic team "best practises".
Specifically though, I found the chapter on Goal setting to be excellent. Being someone who is heavily into goal setting and mission statements, I still found information that was new to me. I would recommend this book, just based on that chapter.
In Conclusion - if this is the only Negotiation/Team Building book you'll read this year, then I would pass for something like "Getting to Yes" by the same Author. This is a great polish book once you've delved into other team building books.

This is a good book if you've never read a book about leadership. However, it's nothing new... the 'lateral leadership' concept discussed in this book are no different than any other leadership book.

When searching online for a book on leadership, this book's title,"Getting It Done. How to Lead When You're Not in Charge", immediately grabbed my attention. It seemed perfect for what I needed a little help on. I am sure I am not alone. Everyone at one point in their life is forced into a group situation, whether it is in school, work or everyday life, where they are assigned a problem in which the group needs to accomplish together. However, before a group can solve the problem assigned, it needs to conquer the problems within the group. One of the problems that I have found to exist within every group I have been in is how to reach solutions and successfully work with others when no one knows exactly who is in charge. Everyone needs to individually take on responsibility and contribute, but it works best when you know exactly what you should focus on and the right questions to ask your group members to obtain the best results. This book does an excellent job in first of all, mapping out the problems that groups face and then going into detail by explaining the route group members should take to maximize success. Fisher and Sharp have five basic elements that groups can follow to get things done. By following these five easy steps it will give you a clear focus of how to put it all together and create a successful way to complete the tasks assigned within your group. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a little extra help to maximize their group's potential. It is very easy to read and the information and suggestions that the authors provide will be remembered and used every time I am placed in a group situation again.
