Customer Reviews:
YOUR DAILY DOSE OF ARCHIE! .......2005-04-14
I have to admit, I had no idea that Archie also appeared in newspaper strips, hundreds of them, all around the world, so this book came as a great surprise to me. Archie is one of the most enduring characters in all of comics. Created in 1941 in the pages of MLJ's Pep Comics #22, Archie has thrived for over sixty years. When nearly all the superhero comics disappeared in the late 40's, Archie and his ganged endured on through the prosperous 1950's, the rebellious 1960's, the eclectic 1970's, the "me first 1980's" and...what have we called the 1990's? Oh well, you get the idea.
Archie as a comic strip makes perfect sense. This wonderful 96 page trade paperback collects the Archie daily strips from 1994 through 1995 as told by Craig Boldman and Harry Scarpelli. These strips feature the familiar Archie art style that so many of us have grown up with over the decades. If you haven't read Archie in a long time it's fun to see how Archie has changed with the times as these strips feature things like Big screen TV's and CD's. Give it up to Archie for staying current!
The strips in the book are 3 to 4 panel strips, each dated specifically. Most of the strips are self-contained stories but there are some that go over several days. Typically they are Archie "quickies" with a punch line at the end such as when Mrs. Grundy asks Archie to name three important people in "Western Civilization" and he responds with, "Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and Clint Eastwood."
The book also hits upon all of the most famous themes from the years of Archie comics such as the Betty, Veronica and Archie love triangle, Jughead's laziness and appetite, Moose's stupidity, and Reggie's ego. Among the stories we see is the school year coming to an end as Mr. Weatherbee exclaims that the halls are hallowed again after the last student leaves the building. End of school leads to summer fun including days at the beach, baseball and cookouts. Jughead gets a job that lasts a whole two days (two days in the strip that is) and Arch and Jughead end up with jobs at an amusement park.
In another ongoing story that runs over several days, Archie runs for class President and his horrified to learn he is running against Veronica. He tries everything to throw the election but wins anyhow! Just great stuff! I'm a big comic strip fan and Archie is a strip that really works well in a three to four panel format. If I have one minor complaint it's that there's no color strips. Strictly black & white but that's pretty trivial. I only wish my local papers carried it. Highly recommended!
Archie Day By Day Comic.......2004-07-11
It's a great comic book, I personally like longer stories, but this, is still an awesome comic book!

Heritage and its Consequences.......2001-02-09
This is a novel about a character named Doug who was just released from prison and the stigma attached to him. It turns out that the consequences of his past is inextricably intertwined with his racial identity and the division in his Australian community between black and white. This novel moves very fast. The rapid pace of the narrative matches the speed with which Doug spirals down toward his inevitable doom. The tone is largely based on a quality of fatalism. For each moment of peace and release, Doug finds an intrusion that prevents him reaching a sense of fulfillment. At times, the author makes this too explicit. The relationships between the characters are what make the story so moving. There is such a strong sense of haphazardly drawn communities between Doug's friends and lovers, but which, for the moment, seem so tremendously real to the characters that you want to believe in their permanence. Doug is plagued with a heritage of divide between his helpful mother and his broken father. This is built in the context of a racially divided community. His parole officer doesn't have any hope or, seemingly, any desire to see Doug become successful. With all these conspiring influences, he cannot achieve any lasting stability. It becomes obvious that there is something unstable that has been built in him that leads him, almost unconsciously, toward his own destruction. This is a short, sad and poignant tale.

Book Description
December 7, 1941, is one of those days engraved in the twentieth century memory. It is a landmark day, along with Armistice Day in 1918, the stock market crash in 1929, and the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. This book is about ordinary people on that extraordinary day. To a large extent, this book is by the people who remember that day because they have been permitted to tell their own stories in their own words. The book chooses representative stories from the entire country and concentrates on the stories of two destroyers, the USS Ward and the USS Henley, which were involved in the attack. This book, like all good history, reminds us of the changes that have come since World War II. There has been an overall change in attitudes, especially with the dramatic changes in Europe and the economic dominance of Japan. Much of what we see now relates directly to World War II and the way America and its allies conducted themselves when the war ended. It was the last war which had virtually no gray areas--Germany, Japan, and Italy were the bad guys, and America and its allies were the good guys. It truly was that simple for us before and during World War II. Nothing has been that simple since the fateful day that brought America into the most catastrophic conflict in history.

Must like to cook.......2005-09-19
At least half of this book is recipes. We love McManus, but probably would not have bought this book if we'd seen it on the bookshelf.
Funniest cookbook ever.......2002-11-28
This cookbook has McManus's memoir at the front and recipes in the back. I made a few of the recipes when I was in college, and they all got rave reviews except for the griddle scones (maybe it was my fault since I was a new cook). The spaghetti sauce with clams wowed my Italian-American friend. I still need to get up the nerve to make the dandelion wine and other spirits. The recipe for hot dogs made by Boy Scouts had me rolling on the floor. Definitely pick this one up!
Funny book with real recipies.......2000-06-26
The book is typical McManus humor interlaced with good, bad, and ugly recipes. Always the recipes have some story and show what cooking was like when they used things like bacon grease to cook with. No doubt some of these recipes are heart stoppers but a fun book with varying types of things for campers and home cooks which have to be tried. Recipes range from simple to complex and are generally survivors of the passage of time.

As good as can be expected........1998-10-24
Allright, perhaps that is not such a ringing endorsment. But "Jodie Foster a Life on screen" is a fine book. It is a must read for any of Ms. Fosters fans. Indeed for anyone interested in American film. Debateably Ms. Foster is the most powerful woman in film. She is also feircely private. This makes for no easy task when one has to write a bio about someone who refuses to discuss anything about there romantic life, and has had everything else about her published in magasines. This book manages to find interesting things that I did not know about. I am a devoted fan and have read every magasine article I can find. This book provides thoughtful insights and is an interesting read. Saddly Ms. Fosters life story could not be told without including that whole "Hinkley" thing. The book does not dwell on it or give that person any more attention then he deserves. The nicest part is the way the author, Philippa Kennedy, does her very best not to trash Jodies father, Lucius, he divorced his wife Brandy before Jodie was born. He is given a chapter and allowed to present his side. Buddy Foster is also given a chapter. Saddly he has written a "tell All" biography which I, and I would hope, all other true fans, refuse to read. Phillipa Kennedy does a fine job writing the life story of a famouse person who discusses little about herself.

Instant Lottery Tickets Meets Hangman.......2006-05-03
You're probably familiar with the game Hangman, but just in case you aren't, here's how it works with two people: an individual comes up with a word or phrase while the other must guess it. At the bottom of the page are blanks representing letters. As the player guesses the letters, they are written in the appropriate spot. However, if a wrong letter is guessed, a body part is drawn on the gallows. If an entire body is drawn before the phrase is guessed, the one doing the guessing loses.
In his clever Scratch & Solve Hangman, Mike Ward offers a neat twist on an old favorite. You know how instant lottery cards require you to scratch off the metallic finish to reveal what's underneath? That's exactly the way this book works.
For each of the 96 puzzles, there are three components:
*Silver eggs for A through Z
*A dotted-line stick figure on the gallows
*Numbered blanks at the bottom
Here's an example of how a puzzle works. For puzzle one in the Scratch & Solve Hangman #3, I guess the letter "E". When I scratch off the silver egg under "E", it shows the numbers 6 and 8. I go to the bottom of the page and fill in the letter "E" for blanks 6 and 8.
I then guess "R", which revealed a stick figure sticking his tongue out! This means that the letter "R" is NOT a part of solution. If I had revealed six of those faces--which indicates drawing in the head, arms, torso and feet of the body on the gallows--then I would have lost!
However, because I guessed the phrase (poached eggs) before I drew all six body parts, I win! (Admittedly, I had the head and both arms drawn in before I guessed it! Whew!)
This little book is very portable, providing amusement and distraction just about anywhere. Highly recommended if you love Hangman!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-03-09
This book just describes situations that come up at work but not how to manage people
Not what managers need.......2006-12-09
This book is ok for learning how to deal with others, but if you are a mgr. looking for help in working with subordinates, this is not the best.
A quick read witha lot of information........2001-07-03
This book is a very quick read and is set up exactly as the title says. It's 201, numbered paragraphs, each with a little insight into how to deal with "those people." The sections are informative and helpful. I would definitely recommend reading this book before trying to get transferred away from the difficult person in your life.
