Book Description

It’s the writer’s life for Snoopy!

The world’s most talented beagle has found a new career—as a writer, of course! The Literary Ace works feverishly on his typewriter, day and night, atop his doghouse. And while Snoopy is busy writing the next great American novel, you can be sure that the rest of the Peanuts gang will try to get in on the action—especially that “round-headed kid,” Charlie Brown. ’Cause it just wouldn’t be a story without some great characters—the ones right under our favorite doggy virtuoso’s nose!

5 out of 5 stars Brings smiles when needed.......2007-05-22

This was recommended to me by a writer friend. It didn't disappoint me. Now have it on corner of my desk for those trying times when smile or laugh is needed.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Life Snoopy Story.......2006-06-23

From the age of early TV broadcasts of peanuts, I had an inner joy of Snoopy, and my dream came true playing Snoopy in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown", But when Charles Schultz pasted away on my birthday, I had a sad memory to follow me always, BUT the good news is ANYTHING to do with the publishing of Peanuts is worth the price. This book holds it's own in the writing of Schultz, the beagle can do no wrong in my eyes..

5 out of 5 stars Title is NOT Misleading!.......2005-09-21

My wife teaches grad students how to write & research publishable articles and BOOKS. To liven her handouts we have been collecting the "Dark & Stormy Night" cartoons from the daily Classic Charlie Brown in our local paper, The News & Observor.
Then I found this title on Amazon and ordered it for its Cover since the daily strips are in B&W; despite another reviewer's comment that it only had a couple of Snoopy writes a book strips. That Reviewer was WRONG!
This book has two 3-layer Sunday strips plus 10 single layer daily strips; in other words a bargain to assemble a fair use collage for the 20+ I had already "fair used" from the current N&O for a "Snoopy et al write books" compendium.
In other words, Duggan's Law of Scholarly Research applies to the previous reviewer.
Definitely a Five-Star Item for the 1994-95 Charles M. Schultz affectionado.

4 out of 5 stars Fooled by the Title!.......2004-03-18

Ok, for some reason, possibly by the title, cover, and back description, I got the idea this book was going to be all about Snoopy's attempts at the great American novel. Though there are a couple such strips, it is the entire 1995 year. But that ultimately didn't matter.

Full of the usual humor only Schulz could think of, there's the strips that make you laugh lighty, some that make you howl (Conrad, get his beak pierced?), but always make you smile. Good compilation, as usual, and worth the purchase if you're a fan of the strip.

Can't wait for the first book in the new series to come out though!

4 out of 5 stars Finally, the 1995 Year of Peanuts is Chronicled!.......2004-03-05

Since the Peanuts series ended in 2000, Ballantine Books have been issuing compilations of the last years of Peanuts in reverse order (1999-2000 first, then 1998, 1997 and 1996). But for about two years I have waited for a book with the 1995 strips, which would complete their series (earlier years were compiled by other publishers). But in this book, all of the strips from 1995 are published. The strips aren't the best in Peanuts history (I think Schulz did his best work in the 1970's), but they still are interesting to review. This was a period when Schulz did away with his typical four panel weekday strip and mixed things up (with many of his strips being just one large panel).

Since the new Fantagraphics series, which will publish all of the Peanuts strips in order over a 12+ year period won't get to the 1995 season for about 10 years, this book is a must for the Peanuts collector.

    5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2003-05-24

Throughout his career as Charlie Brown's dog, Snoopy took on many important projects. Periodically, he could be seen beginning work on a new novel, which invariably began with, "It was a dark and stormy night." This fun book shows Snoopy's work, from beginning the project, through his finding a publisher, and on to the inevitable autograph parties. As an added bonus, Snoopy's whole novel is included for the reader's perusal.

As with all of Charles M. Schulz's work, this Peanuts book is extremely funny. I mean, it stars Snoopy, what can be better that that? This is a great Peanuts book, and a nice addition to anyone's library. If you can buy it then do so, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Snoopy the struggling author.......2002-04-23

Snoopy is trying to write a book. He starts with the phrase "It was a dark and stormy night," and it just keeps getting better from there! Snoopy makes a great author! He's so cool sitting on his doghouse with his typewriter! Good job, Snoopy!

If this product actually existed, I would give it five stars. Beautiful art and a compelling conclusion to the Dogwitch story make the issued this volume intends to collect very worthwhile. However, as of this review, this product does not actually exist. Both the creator and the publisher show the book on their own pages as "coming soon", and have for some time, without giving a definite intended release date. How Amazon can claim to be able to ship this product in a matter of weeks when it doesn't exist is beyond me, but attempts to bring this faux pas to their attention has only resulted in replies that lead one to believe they don't actually read comment e-mails. I highly recommend checking in with Daniel Schaffer's personal website FIRST, to see if the book has, in fact, been printed before trying to buy it. Once it actually exists, it will be a great buy.

Imagine yourself back in New York in 1983. It's about 5:30 in the morning. You're a regular pedestrian walking down the street near the New York Public Library. A large crowd of people are gathered there. Equipment such as cameras, lights, and microphones are everywhere. Soon you find yourself standing next to Bill Murray.

                  You ask, "What's this production?"

Bill says, "Production? This is a madhouse! These cameras are just getting in the way!"

You step back and see odd statues and robots crafted into obscene and terrifying figures. Suddenly, a voice shouts, "Action!" and you're pushed aside while Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd walk into the magnificent library with a huge camera dolly following them.

Finally, you spot a small card table packed with coffee, donuts, and Styrofoam cups. Tired and thirsty, you pour yourself some hot coffee from an electric pot hooked up to a small generator. As soon as you touch the pot, a kid jumps from behind the shadows and screams, "Don't move!"

"I just want a sip of coffee!"

"This is Dan Aykroyd's coffee table. Only he gets anything on it, ya' hear? I'm his assistant!"

                  "You've got to be kidding!"

The kid whips his arm from the shadow of a tall streetlight and points with a shaking hand, "And that table is Bill Murray's!"

Not willing to argue with this crazed assistant, you begin to walk away from the mass of moviemaking paraphernalia and out of the area. Before leaving, you spot a short, nerdy man sitting at a small card table by some sound equipment. The table is filled with art supplies, and the man works on carefully molding a green goblin the shape of a spud. "I've got to get out of here," you think to yourself as you skip over a roadblock and scuffle back into the reality of non-fiction.

In 1984, the next summer, not knowing what to do with your friends, you go to a movie called GHOSTBUSTERS, for it's been getting a lot of hype in the media and you want to see what the fuss is about. As the first scene comes into focus, you let out an involuntary shout of amazement. That was the New York Public Library! Soon enough, the pieces fall into place. You had witnessed the partial filming of one of the greatest comedy films in history!

After the movie, as you walk into a bookstore to kill time before a party, there in front of you is a large book entitled, "Making Ghostbusters: The Screenplay." Ecstatic, you pass up cab fare to attend your party and buy this magnificent book, pouring over it until dawn. You realize that you're a Ghostbuster fan for life. The book is a possession you cherish, for it's like a souvenir of time you spent unknowingly with some of the greatest moviemakers in film history, not including that overprotective assistant.

The movie GHOSTBUSTERS means a lot to many people. One way to sum up their incredible fondness of the movie is "pure cinema magic." Most first impressions of the movie quantify its resounding quality: the wizardry of the special effects, the amazing cast, and the taught, well-written script. And it's largely a comedy! How many comedies have accumulated such a fan base? It's almost unheard of! How many comedies are enjoyed as thoroughly and extensively fifteen years after their original release? Almost none, I'd bet.

Here, in Making Ghostbusters: The Screenplay, the behind-the-scenes secrets and the complete shooting script are here, but the book is more than that. It's a complete sentimental scrapbook that materializes the movie's greatness and encapsulates its craftsmanship and artistry like a time capsule of moviemaking blood, sweat, tears, and creativity.

What this classic volume needs badly is a reprint, but for now, Amazon.com is probably your only hope. With the magnificent re-release of the movie on DVD, this book in its entirety would be a wonderful companion. So let's get this message out; let this be the manifesto! Hear that? Get those printing presses cranking, and bring back the magic!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Ghostbusters resource.......1999-05-07

Making Ghostbusters contains hundreds of exclusive concept sketches (many by legendary horror artist Bernie Wrightson), details of which scenes were deleted and why, color photos (though not nearly enough), and more. The book is built around an annotated script, with enlightening comments from Harold Ramis, Ivan Reitman, and others from the creative team. Few hit movies have had their creative process so wonderfully documented from genesis to box office--for Ghostheads, it's a must-have.

                  Book Description

Musical genius, polemicist, explosive personality—that was the nineteenth-century German composer Richard Wagner, who paid as much attention to his reputation as to his genius. Often maddening, and sometimes called mad, Wagner wrote with the same intensity that characterized his music.
The letters and essays collected in Judaism in Music and Other Essays were published during the 1850s and 1860s, the period when he was chiefly occupied with the creation of The Ring of the Nibelung. Highlighting this collection is the notorious 1850 article “Judaism in Music,” which caused such a firestorm that nearly twenty years later Wagner published an unapologetic appendix. Other prose pieces include “On the Performing of Tannhauser,” written while he was in political exile; “On Musical Criticism,” an appeal for a more vital approach to art undivorced from life; and “Music of the Future.” This volume concludes with letters to friends about the intent and performance of his great operas; estimations of Liszt, Beethoven, Mozart, Gluck, Berlioz, and others; and suggestions for the reform of opera houses in Vienna, Paris, and Zurich.
The Bison Book edition includes the full text of volume 3 of William Ashton Ellis’s 1894 translation commissioned by the London Wagner Society.

3 out of 5 stars Dreadful translation, but important texts.......1999-08-06

The German word "Erdball" means "world". It takes a weird translator to want to render it into English as "Earthball". H Ashton Ellis is that translator, a man who, in learning German, forgot all his English. Ellis translates German compound words not with plain English but with strange Germanic formulations, eg "leg-dancers", or "tone-arranger" for a German word that simply means "composer". So while it's good to have these Wagner texts available in English, it's a shame that the re-appearance of these awful translations in a modern edition will publishers from commissioning a new, competent, plain-English translation discourage. Ellis also makes Wagner's "Das Judentum in Musik" harder to evaluate by introducing antisemitic overtones (perhaps of his own) where the Wagner text doesn't justify it. For example, the Ellis text describes Mendelsohn as "a Jew composer", which has a hostile, sneering, sound to it. But Wagner's text has "Judaische"; the correct translation is the merely descriptive "a Jewish composer". There are other, similar examples.

As for Wagner, "Das Judentum in Musik"'s argument is that because [in mod-19th Century Europe] Jews are partly involved in the cultures amongst which they live, and are partly separate and aloof from them, their music and poetry don't have the warmth, depth and humanity that come from having strong folk roots; Jewish art, while Jews remain apart and not assimilated into the mainstream "folk", is likely to be imitative, clever, ironical, and so on, but not deep or passionate.

The essay brings no comfort to Wagner-lovers, but not quite as much comfort to Wagner-haters as is sometimes claimed. Some people, by no means antisemitic, eg Patrick Magee, defend Wagner's analysis (stripped of its few paragraphs of merely racist writing). The essay makes an argument about the need for art to have folk roots if it is to be great. Me, I'd say its too easy to find counter-examples, for Wagner's analysis to stand. Personally, if I were to defend any part of the essay it would be Wagner's valuing of sincere emotional expression in art over irony. We're starting to hear the phrase "post-irony", but it's not yet a reality. I'd welcome a trend back to having the courage to express emotion, in life as well as art, without always hiding behind quote marks. One of Wagner's merits is as supreme non-ironist.

But, point out the detractors, rightly, there's a strong thread of antisemitism in amongst Wagner's discussion of culture and of art in this essay. There is a tone of "balance" in most of Wagner's paragraphs, an assumption of the mask of mere intellectual curiosity over the odd position of Jewish musicians and poets in the mid-19th Century. But in some paragraphs animosity shows through undisguised.

On the other hand, the essay is not the same thing as the political antisemitism that had its horrifying culmination under the Nazis. Wagner's subject was the arts. And his proposed "remedy" was for Jews to assimilate into the mainstream population and lose their separate identity. That's a despicably racist idea (why should they, if they don't want to?), but it's diametrically the opposite of what the Nazis called for - racial segregation followed by mass murder. Reading it, you'll find that the essay contains specific offensive passages, and is permeated by ideas we now find offensive, but that it is not simply a screed of racial or religious bigotry; mostly the text argues about art and music. In sum, anyone who loves Wagner's music will wish he'd never written or published "Das Judentum in Musik". It disfigures the man's posthumous reputation. But nor is it quite the screed of racial vilification it is sometimes made out to be. Wagner was a bigot and a crank, but not a monster. The book gets three stars, because though it is an appalling translation of a bad essay, it does at least make this infamous essay available for people to judge it for themnselves.

                  1 out of 5 stars This Is A Transcription, Not A Book.......2004-10-07

This is a tedious book. It is a compilation of raw data that hasn't been refined. The author splices and dices transcripts of surveys results which are then arranged in categories. But she fails to flesh out the story. There are some interesting facts and figures, but overall, I'm sorry I bought it. I love crosswords, but this book was a let down.

                  5 out of 5 stars So,you enjoy crosswords..........2003-12-18

I enjoy puzzles of all types and I also enjoy finding how things work. Can't say that I am fanatic solver, but usually worked at the daily one in the local paper. For many years, while commuting to work in Montreal (Montreal Star),New York(New York Times and The NY Daily Post),Toronto(Toronto Star);entertained me.
I enjoyed this book because it covered crosswords from A to Z.It was interesting to read about the business and the community who are behind the constructing and publishing them.As with most things the personalities are very interesting.
As to who this book is for;I would think casual solvers would enjoy it just as I did;and of course "experts" who may even think of trying to construct puzzles would find it a gem.It would be a great reference for anyone who wanted to get serious about puzzles.
I would suggest that before starting to read this book that one should scan it first. There are excellent references at the back;particularly the Glossary and Biographies that I wish I had known about before I was half way through the book.I would also suggest reading the Customer Reviews, which are well done and I submit are better than mine.

                  1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2003-05-13

Don' bother to buy the book. Anyone can send a survey to people of like minds then use their replies to write a book. I was very disappointed n the contents of the book but glad that I had purchased it used not new.

4 out of 5 stars fascinating -- but only if you're a true crossword addict.......2003-01-08

I wouldn't call this book particularly well written. There's some history, but the book doesn't provide a long, captivating narrative of the development of the puzzle, or a psychoanalysis of the folks who become addicted to their daily puzzle. Rather, the book is more or less a collection of comments and insight from many of the creators of currently-published crosswords -- how they got into puzzle creation, how they sold their first puzzle, how long it takes them to solve the Sunday NY Times puzzle, etc. The book is behind-the-scenes reality show on crossword puzzles. After reading it, you'll have a good sense of how puzzles are created, how they are edited, what makes a puzzle good, what makes a puzzle bad (or unpublishable), and how the daily crossword puzzle ends up as a final product in your morning newspaper. You'll learn about the preferences of different editors (now I finally know why my collections of NY Times crosswords edited by Will Shortz are SO MUCH MORE FUN TO SOLVE than the NY Times crosswords edited by Eugene Maleska). You'll learn about the evils of "crosswordese" (if you're reading this -- you know what I'm talking about -- words like etui). The book contains biographical shorts of the various crossworders who contributed -- they come from varied backgrounds, from Will Shortz, who majored in crossword puzzles in college (seriously) to dentists and physical therapists and lawyers who got sucked in by their hobby. The book also contains some very good puzzles and their solutions -- though I wouldn't recommend this book if your only interest in in solving puzzles. Overall, a great selection if you want to get to know the clever people and the detailed process that deliver crossword puzzles to the rest of us -- it may be of limited interest to anyone else.

                  1 out of 5 stars What's a nine-letter word for BAD?.......2002-02-05

Torturous. Not only is this book not for the crossword dillettante, it should be a disappointment to the hardcore solver whose only delight perhaps might come from seeing his friends' names in print.

A haphazardly constructed tome, "Crossword Collection" is little more than transcribed interviews with the crossword world's major players and reads like a book in search of an editor. It's as if Amende did all the research for the book and then chose not to write one. There's something to be said for letting the people interviewed speak for themselves, but a little editing is in order as quote after quote after quote sucks the life out what must be an interesting group of people.

There's something disappointing when a good idea for a book is poorly executed. For a well-written, humorous look at a similar world, stick to "Word Freak," Fatsis' book about competitive Scrabble.

"The Hybrid Leader" takes us inside corporate America in order to give us good insight into why 80 percent of all American people wake up on Monday mornings and don't want to go to work! How can we change this? Trudy Bourgeois, author of "The Hybrid Leader," offers tips to change outdated work practices that are no longer realistic in today's global environment. She makes it clear that organizations must embrace their employees in totality. That means valuing each employee's work life, home life, and social life. The days of working a life time for one company are gone. A work culture that embraces flexibility will positively impact productivity, work quality, and retention.

In the chapter "It's Time for a New Leadership Style" Bourgeois points out what employees need and want in a leader. She explains leadership styles, how men and women's leadership styles are different but when combined, can make a powerful team with successful project outcomes. She believes in fueling personal growth to achieve maximum results and that each person is responsible for their own destiny that can produce a hybrid leader. One chapter lists six "action steps" that can help guide you in the direction of becoming a hybrid leader.

This book is a must read for both employees and employers.
