The book spans our heroine's 100-year life, focusing on key elements in the development of the Authority metahuman team, and pointing out the mischief that she made along the way. True to the series' larger-than-life aesthetic, Sparks finds herself befriending a young Hitler, arranging for the destruction of a sentient Kansas City, and sticking it to the man every chance she gets. While not all of the details contained in the book will be clear to readers unfamiliar with the Authority or Stormwatch, it's still great fun and should inspire a few return trips to the 20th century. --Rob Lightner

A very interesting look at the history of the Spirit of the 20th century, a very complex heroine. Jenny Sparks is writing in her diary, knowing that her story is about to come to a close, with Swift keeping her company. We learn that Angie, the Engineer, goes back in time to tell her to start it in the first place. Very sneaky.

Great companion book to the Ellis/Millar Authority series.......2005-12-16

What events transpired in the time between StormWatch's disbandment and the formation of the Authority? Jenny Sparks: The Secret History Of The Authority answers that question and shed some light on the untold tales of the superhero team formally known as StormWatch.

As he did so well on the The Authority series, Mark Millar's sarcastic dialogue is hilariously dark and witty. John McCrea's artwork was a pleasant surprise. His equivocal and caricature-esque style on Hitman has kept me away from that series but he demonstrates with this book that he can also pencil in a realistic and polished manner.

In the end, this collected edition is a must for Authority fans and represents a great starting point for new readers who are unfamiliar with The Authority. Check it out.

Jenny Sparks if Forrest Gump!!!.......2005-08-15

This edition collects the mini-series of the same name. Jenny Sparks who guided the Authority has her life and the lives of the Authority examined in detail. A lot of blanks are filled with some left open.

Jenny is the spirit of the twentieth century and we see her life in various stages. She suffers from the "Forrest Gump Syndrome" she is one of those figures who interacts and acts upon the famous and infamous and shaped the twentieth century.

Out of all the stories I found the story of the Doctor and the Engineer the most interesting (which is not to say the others are bad just amongst a field of gems I am choosing the best).

Well worth the read while we wait for DC to reboot the Authority again.

A self-contained jaunt into the details of the history of Jenny Sparks. While it racks up an amazing number of improbable scenes, this is merely the clever exploitation of her characterization as the "Spirit of the 20th Century."

Fun, but not crucial to understanding The Authority.

Great Background Material for "The Authority".......2001-07-27

This volume is a collection of issues from a comic book miniseries that details some of the background of Jenny Sparks, founder of the superhero group The Authority, and how she recruited its original members. It is not necessary to have read any of the issues from the core series itself (or from its predecessor, Stormwatch), but it is certainly helpful. The first few issues of The Authority are collected in the volumes "Under New Management" and "Relentless".

In any case, the individual tales show Jenny Sparks, who wields the power of electricity, encountering certain critical superheroes (Apollo, the Midnighter, the Engineer, and so forth) and convincing them in her unique way to join her group. Because the ageless Ms. Sparks is the literal Spirit of the 20th Century, she was born on January 1 of 1900 and knows she will die at the approach of the new millenium. Her long lifespan and her key role in world history means that she has been present at practically every critical event over the past few decades and that she wields enormous power in the secret government of the world. (She arranges the election defeat of Gerald Ford because she's angered at the Nixon pardon and makes sure that Reagan "will be taken care of".)

There's a whole hidden history of which we, the plebeian masses, remain unaware, complete with thwarted alien invasions, secret bases, and contacts with parallel worlds, such as Sliding Albion. Thankfully, swashbuckling heroes such as Hemingway and Einstein are around to pitch in to help the lusty Ms. Sparks.

This is a glorious full-color world that's chock full of gadgets, byzantine plots, improbable encounters, thoroughly evil villains, buckets of blood, cigarettes, whisky, and sex. The tales span several decades, and include an encounter with the occult-obsessed Nazis (and a shoutout to a certain Indiana Jones) and a time-travelling sentient city from the future that's come back to our era to destroy humanity for religious reasons.

The irreverent and sloppily-dressed Ms. Sparks hates practically all governments, and since the secret cabals that rule the world are in some cases shown to engage in human sacrifice, it's easy to see why. Primarily, she's out to have a good time, and to kick a lot of butt.

Good stories and great fun, and excellent artwork. A must-have for those who enjoy The Authority or Planetary!

Woefully lacking...........2005-12-15

but only in the amount of material!!! This truly outstanding collection of many of Bud Grace's efforts from the first year of Ernie is so frustrating I could hardly stand it. Why in the wide, wide world of sports every single strip from the first year isn't included boggles my mind. This strip hits the ground running from the very first page to the very last. There are landmines as you read along, some of which caused me to expel various and sundry substances from my nose in a very forceful manner. This is a must for every fan of Ernie, Uncle Sid, and the rest of the wackos rendered so alive and believeable by Grace's outstanding skill with pen and ink. The only downside is the absence of every one of Grace's strips from his first year. If any strip deserved to have a complete collection of every one of it's strips then it's this one. Piranha Club forever!!!

A Book that Disney Fans should not live without!.......2007-10-03

"Disney A to Z" is an awesome book that a true Disney fan cannot live without. It is a great book that will help you find out about old Disney movies, that you might have not seen. "Disney A to Z" encyclopedia is also an essential source for those that love to play the "Disney Seen it" board game. It gives a short description of ALL Disney movies including the short ones that came out after the World War II. I LOVE IT!!!

This book is a great resource for all Disney fans. All the characters, all the movies (unfortunately, the Mephisto movie made in collaboration with Salvador Dali is not in the book) and all the attractions, parks, properties and influentials employees are mentioned. Maybe just not as exhaustive as I would like it; it is, however, a great resource.

This is a wonderful resource for a one-stop look at "all things Disney." However, be forewarned that this book does have its mistakes and is not completely thorough, so don't expect something exhaustive...but this is pretty close to it. Descriptions tend to bounce back and forth between incredibly descriptive to incredibly nondescriptive. A tv show that lasted literally only a month will sometimes have a much longer description than a park attraction that had been up for years. There are other mistakes that veteran Disney lovers will also note. For example, the encyclopedia lists "Pecos Bills" eatery (Frontierland) in Disney World as serving some Mexican fare. However, that is incorrect...the Mexican fare is served at "El Pirata y El Perico" eatery (Adventureland), but this eatery is not even listed in the book at all. The two do share an outside dining area. It lists "Caribbean Plaza" (home to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride) in Disney World as "near Adventureland", when it's actually a part of Adventureland and borders Frontierland. Those are just a couple of examples of little mistakes throughout the book. That said, it is a wonderful compilation of everything Disney and is a great gift for any Disney lover!

Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

The Book is a great 'Guiding Light' - I mention this because Project Management is a wide topic. Any good business needs to begin with a plan to blueprint for operating and building company eg. Establishing, Budget, Targetting market, Competition etc. This book provides check lists with diagrams, graphs and examples that focus on SWOT (Strength, weakness, Opportunities and Threat) analysis of business. Excellent CM book.......2006-05-30

All too often construction managers (CM) get caught up in the day-to-day issues that happen on the jobsite. Daniel's book brings one back to the basics: Project Management 101, Safety Considerations, Key Administration Issues, Financial Administration, Project Change Control, Document Control, and Estimating. The sample forms reinforce the use of the appropriate form, which should not be a handwritten piece of paper or an e-mail message (without the appropriate attachment).
I have read Daniel's book twice and feel the seasoned CM as well as the novice CM can get value from this book. From the attributes of an Exceptional Manager, to the listing of potential Meeting Topics, to Change and Document Control, the book offers some new ideas and some things to remember when planning the next construction project.
