This was a great way to get copies of these beautiful illustrations. The color isn't perfect, so not suitable for framing, but a great book.

          4 out of 5 stars I'M THE BADDEST!.......2005-09-18

There's been a death at Cromartie! The casualty is Mechazawa, but...um, ok, I think I'm the only person that has noticed he's a robot. Anyway, he was taking a corner of an alley too fast on his motorcycle and ended up crashed and in hundreds of pieces. Kamiyama and company try to restore him to his original form but only succeed in attaching him to the motorcycle! Meanwhile, the All-Japan Kingpin Championship gets underway in which toughs from all over Japan compete to be the ultimate Badass. Speaking of kingpins, in America, Takenouchi finds himself the leader of something called "The Mafia" and finds his number two is a carbon copy of Freddie, except this guy's name is Mercury, plus he can talk! And just wait till you see the idiots of Cromartie start a baseball team!

Volume 3 was a return to the hilarity of Volume 1 after a weak Volume 2. The punchlines were less contrived and the momentum was maintained throughout the entire book. Great laughs!

          Book Description

"To be a mom is to have, at any given moment, everything turned completely on its head. That is why the word for Mom is Mom, and not Som, or Pom, or Bloot--because MOM upside down is WOW. That is it right there, the single truth, inherent in the very word--motherhood is one big, intense, erratic, emphatic WOW. Wow, this is tough! Wow, this is joyous! Wow, this is a nightmare! Wow, this is phenomenal! Wow, I love these kids! Wow, are they annoying!"

Humorist and mother of three Amy Krouse Rosenthal has a knack for recording the minutiae of everyday life, for finding the WOW in a seemingly mundane reality. In this hilarious follow-up to her much-gabbed-about The Book of Eleven and The Same Phrase Describes My Marriage and My Breasts: Before the Kids, They Used to Be Such a Cute Couple, Amy contemplates what it means to be a mother.

Like life, motherhood is full of lessons: You can't please everyone all the time. No matter what you forget to pack, it all works out in the end. Some days your zipper will jam and your ice cream will fall down a sewer. Whether celebrating the music of motherhood ("I love you, Mommy.") or reflecting on the death of a child, Amy captures the incredible ups, downs, and in-betweens of motherhood with unflinching honesty and an irrestibly quirky charm.

Whether you're seeking comic relief or absolution of mother's guilt (for not filling out the baby book properly, for feeling thankful for McDonald's, for not making homemade Halloween costumes, for taking time to read this book, for not being perfect), A Mother's Guide to the Meaning of Life delivers the goods, plus plenty of sage advice from the trenches of motherhood. Advice to be remembered for a lifetime. Advice like, "Let go of perfectionism. Just drop it. And look at it this way: If you really were a perfect mother, everyone would hate you."

For those who have mastered multi-tasking--an essential trait of mothers--this book is a perfect companion when slicing a flank steak, folding towels, or decorating a sombrero for Crazy Hat Day. And for those still perfecting their mom skills: Put down the butcher knife, pick up this book, and start laughing.

1 out of 5 stars Great title, stupid book .......2004-12-12

This book is so bad that I cannot help wondering if the people who wrote such glowing reviews are freinds and family of the author. This was a total waste of time and money. I only paid $4.99 for the book and that was too much. This is a very immature approach to parenting and life. If you are looking for someting wise and funny, try Erma Bombeck.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every parent.......2001-08-06

This book was laugh out loud funny. Amy is incredibly witty. She finds humor in ordinary family life. After I read this book I realized that my family is actually "normal". I read this book in one night. Once you start reading you will not be able to put it down. After reading this book I felt a sense of relief from the frustrations of the toddler years. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Nice to Know I'm Not Alone.......2001-07-06

I'm beginning to think that Amy has video cameras set up in my house, because so much of what happens in her books, happen in my house. Once again, Amy has written a short, sweet and very funny book about motherhood. Once again, Amy has made me feel like I'm not the only mom who feels like she does -- like taking off as a passenger in a semi one day. A must read for moms!

5 out of 5 stars helpful and amusing.......2001-05-25

I have read all 3 of Amy's books. They are full of earthy wisdom about child-rearing and motherhood...AND, they're fun and funny to read. I gave this book to a first time mother (over40) who feared that her so-called negative feelings were off the chart. After she read Amy's book, she felt so reassured.

Keep up the good work Amy. Write a book about anything and I'll read it.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for mothers.......2001-04-18

This book is a gem, not just for mothers, but for keen observers of the wonders of everyday life. I'm not yet a mother, one month and counting, but I found this book filled with wisdom and wit. If my experiences can be any where close to those of Amy Krouse Rosenthal I can only guess that I'm going to love this trip down motherhood lane. I also have a feeling I'll be reading Ms. Rosenthal's words again and again searching through these pages for those pearls of advice that I can use in my own life. I hope to see more from this talented and thought provoking author!

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not your average stage mom story!.......2005-06-19

This book is a most delightful and remarkable look at a mother/daughter relationship during the pre-teen years, that time of delicate balance between dependance and curiosity. When a child isn't at the rebellious stage yet but is ready to expand their horizons beyond the apron strings.

Hollywood, with all it's perils and pitfalls, provides a perfect metaphor for this age. For Gigi acting is a means to experiment with her own emerging independence and sense of individuality. For her mother it's a roller coaster ride of love, hope, a bit of anxiety and, of course, the occasional bout of exasperation.

But most of all this book is real, nitty-gritty and gutsy. At times, Gigi's diary entries paint such an exact picture adolescence, everything from hair crises to the playful use of exclamation points, that it'll make any woman smile with reminiscence and empathy. Her mom's entries hold nothing back, she's obviously not trying to come across as perfect. Just tells it as it is, warts and all, but with honesty, warmth and rare wit.

Individually these are wonderful stories. Interwoven they present a unique portrayal of what it is to be a family.

          5 out of 5 stars A great little book.......2004-08-30

I loved this little book. What a great adventure for an eleven year old and her mother. Because the book was based on private journals, it has a special freshness and honesty that most books lack. My only criticism is that it is too short. I wanted to read more and I hope a second book in the works. I want to find our what happens to Gigi's movie career. It will be interesting to see if the next book can keep its freshness and honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously Honest and Incredibly Funny.......2004-06-01

This book is great for families. Especially ones that include a teen or pre-teen. It is written by a child and her mom. The kid is Gigi. An 11 year old angel/devil. This book deals with the ups and downs in the family. It is outragously honest and incredibly funny. I would suggest this to book everyone and their mom.

5 out of 5 stars Show Business and the Business of Growing Up.......2004-03-02

In the thoroughly enjoyable "Me, My Kid and Hollyweird", down-to-earth mom, Chartreuse Braun proves that not all stage mothers are frustrated wannabe performers forcing their children into the limelight. Chartreuse and her daughter, Gigi, bravely pull up their Florida roots and transplant themselves in Los Angeles pursuing the not-quite-teenage girl's dream of becoming an actor. Gigi has decided she wants to be a, "kid actor not an adult actor", so time is of the essence...

The book includes their practical experience about a child actor's world; headshots and agents, acting coaches, auditions and contracts. The story is told through candid, mother and daughter diary entries and follows the excitement and anxiety of these two as they learn together about show business and the business of growing up.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginner to intermediate solver.......2007-01-29

I just purchased this book and am enjoying it. The type is slightly small as far as giving room to write, but otherwise I found it to be reasonably challenging for me at my current skill level

4 out of 5 stars Fairly Challenging - Good for Beginners.......2002-05-09

All of the cryptograms in this collection (400 to be exact) are quotes from a wide assortment of famous personalities from Winston Churchill to Mick Jagger. For those experienced in cryptograms, this collection won't be terribly challenging, but it will be a good introduction for beginners. If any puzzles prove too tricky, Nash offers not one, but two clues each in the back of the book. (Of course the answers are there too, but don't cheat!) A few challenging puzzles, but most are moderate or easy. Again, a nice place to start if you are new to cryptograms.

I don't do cryptograms, but my wife does. She received this book as a Christmas present, and she seems to enjoy it. She works a cryptogram from the book almost every evening.

There's one for every day of the year--but do you really have enough willpower to limit yourself to solving just a single cryptogram at a time? They're simply too much fun! What makes these special is that all these quotations come from a celebrity who celebrated a birthday on that particular day. (So, you'll probably jump right to the one who shares yours.) If you've never solved a cryptogram--sentences in code, where each letter stands for another--you'll get directions and hints at the start.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Way to Decode Celebrity Quotes.......2006-04-08

"365 Mind-Challenging Cryptograms" is filled to the brim with celebrity quotes. Your challenge is to decode both the quote, and the name of the person who said it.

There is a good set of instructions for solving this type of puzzle right at the beginning - which makes this a great book for the cryptogram novice and pro alike.

I really like how the author arranges the hints so that you can receive the hint without having to see the whole answer. You can choose a level 1 hint - which tells you the profession & birth date of the celebrity who made the statement - if you're still stuck, you can move on to the level 2 hint - which gives you a more direct hint for either a letter or a word within the puzzle. If you're still stumped, you may want to check out the index - which provides a list of all of the celebrities quoted in this book. And, if all else fails, you can find the complete answer given at the end of the book.

Overall, I found this to be a fun collection of cryptograms. The only reason that I gave it 4 starts instead of 5 is because I found there to be too little room to write the answers - the coded letters are too close together - so I wound up having to write really small.

5 out of 5 stars Occupy idle hours with an eclectic selection of coded quotes.......2004-06-04

This inexpensive, sturdy, entertaining book contains a one-a-day collection of 365 amusing, insightful and even witty quotes, drawn from a rich group of personalities whose birthday is celebrated on date under which they are featured. Ranging from poets, novelists, artists and movie stars, to scientists, politicians and philosophers, the quoted authors include William Blake, Lewis Carroll, Edgar Degas, Sophia Loren, Isaac Newton, Richard Nixon, Albert Camus, and 358 others. All the quotes are encoded in substitution cipher, each letter standing for another, and with varying degrees of difficulty they are guaranteed to keep you busy for hours as you find yourself using your intuition, your knowledge of spelling and syntax, and even your familiarity with each quoted personality to figure them out.
The book also includes an introduction that gives us general hints for solving cryptograms. Two sections with clues on the solution of each puzzle, one stating the occupation and year of birth of the celebrity being quoted and another stating the correct substitution for one or more letters, are included at the back, along with the solutions for each puzzle. An index of authors for those searching for quotes from a particular individual is also included.
If you love cryptograms, buy this book. I guarantee that you won't be able to do them just one a day.

                Book Description

Because they're doing the day-to-day work, front-line employees see many problems and opportunities their managers don't. But most organizations fail to realize this potentially extraordinary source of revenue-enhancing ideas. The authors of "Ideas Are Free use real-world examples from their work with hundreds of organizations to show how to exploit the virtually free, perpetually renewable resource of employee ideas. The book explains how sustainable competitive advantages in areas ranging from productivity and responsiveness to cost reduction and quality assurance are only possible with the attention to detail that comes from getting and implementing large numbers of ideas from employees. Subjects include how to make ideas part of everyone's job, how to set up and run an effective process for handling ideas, how to help people come up with more and better ideas, and how a strong flow of ideas can have a profound impact on an organization's culture.

Interested in learning more about idea programs, I've read this book. It's short and to the point. It addresses the importance of small ideas for the improvement of the company and the engagement of its employees. Also very important is the chapter related to rewards and the counter-intuitive effects
