Metonymy In Contemporary Art: A New Paradigm

Book Description

In Metonymy in Contemporary Art, Denise Green develops an original approach to art criticism and modes of creativity inspired by aspects of Australian Aboriginal and Indian thought. Interweaving her own evolution as an artist with critiques of Clement Greenberg and Walter Benjamin as well as commentary on artists such as Joseph Beuys, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, and others, Green explores the concept of metonymic thinking as developed by the poet and linguist A. K. Ramanujan and its relevance to contemporary painting and aesthetics. In Ramanujan's formulation of metonymic thinking, the human and natural worlds are intrinsically related to one another as are the transcendent and mundane. When applied to contemporary art, metonymic thinking implies that one must understand that the creativity of the artist flows from a fusion of an inner state of mind and the outer material world. Pointing out how this alternative aesthetic and cognitive mode is left wanting in art criticism, Green argues for a critical discourse and interpretive mode in contemporary art that is at once global and pluralist in perspective. Denise Green is an Australian American artist and writer in New York City. Since 1972 her work has been the subject of over eighty-five solo exhibitions. She has collaborated as an editor for Semiotext(e) and is a member of the Graduate Faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her writings have appeared in Arts Magazine, Art Press, Art Monthly Australia, and Art and Australia. Retrospectives of her work have appeared in major museums from the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center/Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, and the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken, Germany. Given the endless variety of costume jewelry, choosing which pieces to include in a reference book must be an overwhelming task. While not an encyclopedic reference, for its 150+ pages "The Great Pretenders" provides a good, basic overview. There is an adequate sample of just about every type of popular costume jewelry. The pieces are well photographed and realistically valued. If you need a basic costume jewelry reference for buying and selling, this is a worthwhile book to own.

i didn't buy this from amazon (sorry), but i found this comic at a local store in french "tu m'aimerais encore si je fais pipi au lit?" my boyfriend stumbled upon it and started chuckling to himself. i took a look at what he was enjoying and was immediately enchanted myself. each simple 4 panel comic gives you a glimpse into the amazing and mundane moments in a relationship which liz captures so well. i am a big fan and looking forward to more comics from liz!

This is the most adorable set of images I've ever seen in my life. Life is a collection of moments, and this book is filled with moments of character and humor beyond what words are able to describe. It's all so simple, but hits a person somewhere much deeper. In all seriousness, it makes my heart fuzzy.

There's a good reason this book is still in print after 30 years. An incredibly funny account of Smith's adventure in building a vacation house in Baja California. Hilarious and also touching; a clash of cultures between the linear thinking Smith and Mr. Gomez, who seems unreliable, illogical, and capricious to Smith. Smith tries to change Mr. Gomez's way of working and thinking, and Smith ends up being changed himself, discovering that Gomez was right about a lot of things after all. I can't imagine anyone that wouldn't enjoy this book. Buy it.

I first read GOD AND MR GOMEZ as a child, in the Reader's Digest COndensed Books my parents ordered so faithfully. I was enchanted with the beauty of Baja, and the friendly, welcoming way Mr. Gomez encourages Jack to relax and become part of the culture he's living in. His house may not have been built quickly, but it will stand for a thousand years, thanks to Mr. Gomez:)

The Real Baja Adventure..........1999-08-17

After reading God and Mr. Gomez, my boyfriend and I decided to drive to La Bocana de Santo Tomas, to visit the Jack Smith house and see for ourselves what this majical place was all about. 6 months later we purchased our own casa down the road from the original Smith house, and even got married on our deck there last year. You never know when you pick up a book just how it may affect your life...

Hilarious book about culture-shock.......1999-08-14

Easy to read, funny, absolutely right-on account of what happens when American meets Mexican culture. Smith recounts his constant frustrations, surprise, and delight at the Mexican way. I worked in Mexico for 4 years and can vouch for the veracity of Smith's observations. Very sympathetic and respectful of Mexican culture and habits for the most part. Smith is a very talented writer.

I have another, older, copy of this book and have read it several times. This was a replacement for the old one, which is worn out! If you've ever been to Baja, you will totally love hearing Jack and Denny Smith's experiences with purchasing a home there. If you haven't, you will still love hearing the story AND you will want to go there and find your own adventure.

This book is based on a true story about a newspaper writer from Los Angeles who is building his dream vacation house in Baja California, Mexico. I liked the way he described the whole process of building his house and giving details of all the interesting events that occurred during that time. Highly recommended.

Both Jack Smith and Mr. Gomez have passed on from this life. Thanks to Jack's gifted writing ability, you can experience the culture, beauty and patience pace still to be found in Baja California. I have been there and seen the house, the road, the federalli check point, the cliffs and the fishing village. I have had the good fortune to have stayed in a home near Jack's and met others who followed Jack's column in the LA Times during those years of construction of his "mansion". I have searched used book stores and bought on-line used copies while new books have not been published since 1997. I am so glad it is back in print so I can recommend it to my friends. Great reading and funny too!

"God and Mr. Gomez", while not a recent book by a long shot is a timeless read. It is written in the hilareous style that only Jack Smith can pen. You blend in with the characters and it being a true story makes it all the more interesting and satisfying. A great read for summer, or anytime

My 2 year old loves Buzz and Woody (who doesn't?) and this is one of those books he can memorize and "read" on his own. If your child is at that stage and likes the characters, its good at that.

I got the book for an airplane activity - it kept him busy all week long, but has lost some of its appeal now that he has his full library to select from.

Our 6 yr old in kindergarten read this book today! It was great he only needed a little help and he was very proud of himself. It is a nice simple story about Buzz,Woody and Jessie that is separate from the movies.

Easy and Fun.......2002-06-26

I just started playing the Trumpet and was looking for a fun book to start with (I'm 30 yrs. old) This book had some tunes I was familiar with (which is one reason it appealed to me.) However, I was in for a GOOD SHOCK when I realized it came with a CD. At first I thought the CD had the songs in the book, but played as they were in the original Disney movies (with voices and drums and all that other distracting stuff.) Not at all. It was all the songs from the book, but made specially for me to play along with while I played the trumpet. It was BEAUTIFULLY made specially for me while I play my trumpet!

Do you know what an NGITIC is?.......2003-01-27

I just purchased this book, and I am enjoying it for the most part. I believe Mr. Shortz has a great gift for creative and thoughtful word puzzles. I have to say, however, that I'm a little frustrated with the arcane vocabulary some of the puzzles require. One of the reasons I don't do crosswords is because I never learned what "oleo" was - nor do I care. I love thoughtful puzzles that you can do without a dictionary. Unfortunately, the second puzzle in this book drove me to using my grandfather's 1960 unabridged RH dictionary. Lugging that thing up onto the couch can undermine the recreation feel of the activity. On the second puzzle, however, I discover that my dictionary doesn't have the word/acronym NGITIC (a type of tank apparently). You get my point. I love a book of puzzles that requires only a strong vocabulary and a decent degree of cultural literacy. I think Will Shortz's "Puzzlemaster Presents" series are a good example of this. I have also enjoyed puzzles like these by Pat Battaglia ("Are You Smart, Or What?"). These are very clever and they don't require outside resources to provide creative critical thinking fun.

Ok, maybe it wasn't sexy, but seriously, this is an awesome book. It is challenging, but without being too hard. It has many creative puzzles, some that I have never even seen before. There are also some well-known puzzle types, which I thought was a good thing. Think you are good at those newspaper crossword puzzles? You haven't seen anything yet! These puzzles are very fun, and it is a great deal better than sitting around and watching television. It is also a good way to pass the time. I honestly think this is a great book, and, in no way, a waste of money. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

When I read excerpts from this book, I thought it was a joke, a gage to what managers are trained by the gurus of top management seminars such as Tom Peters, to name one.
