Phenomenal.......2005-05-25
This is a really phenomenal work, with page after page of great Burne-Jones illustrations, all in his signature style. If you like his paintings you'll love these illustrations. IMO they stand as some of his best compositions - nearly every one of them could have been turned into a painting on par with his best work.

A Great Read.......2006-03-09
I've always loved Gen13, and I was very delighted with this volume, which contains issues 45-50. The writer, Scott Lobdell, is pretty decent, trying to revamp the series by bringing it back to its comedic roots. He succeeds more or less, but while the dialogue is actually quite funny, Lobdell overkills it by narrating each issue way too comedically. Every page has a narrator box with some sort of joke and it is a bit too much. My other main complaint was the lack of story and plot, and villains. The villains were poorly introduced and I never was scared for Gen13 for a minute. I guess Lobdell was trying to lighten the series, but I think he needs to learn from Brandon Choi (the original writer) how to balance comedy with action and suspense. I was expecting issue 50 to be full of action and high stakes, but it was a total letdown in my opinion. That aside, Lobdell does do a good job developing the kids of Gen13, and I like a lot of the conversations the characters had with each other.
The art is a huge plus for buying this book. Ed Benes pencils #45-49, and the first 13 pages of #50, and his art is spectacular. He is quite talented, and seems like a J. Scott Cambell prodigy. Unfortunately the pencils for the rest of issue 50 are not so hot, but whatevs.
All in all, this deserves 4 stars because I enjoyed reading it, and I was entertained with the art and laughed quite a few times while reading it. If you like Gen13, this is for you.
Good Comic.......2005-01-15
This is issues 26 - 29, and though it is my first Gen 13 I've read, i have to say it's pretty good. Was confused at first as to why they are hidding, but will have to find out more by picking up the previous TPB's.
The story seemed good, when your hiding out, don't go out and get peoples attention, good point. The art is great, well done.
I gave it 5 stars because i liked the story and art, and really have no outer Gen 13 books to compare it to. If your new to Gen 13, i would not recommend begining with this book as i did. I'm still trying to find a list for the order the comics are in.
AWESOME!!.......2002-05-11
This is, without a doubt, the funniest comic book in existance. Gen-13 is exactly what would happen if a bunch of young people got super-powers. This isn't some high-and-mighty Justice League of America, nor is is some sniveling X-spinoff with the characters too sorry for themselves to do anything.
These are kids trying to have a good time in life, and be superheroes second.
For those of you just browsing for the Gen-13 comic books, this is one of the fully-illustrated and not one of the cheesey novels.
The jokes alone are worth the money. The battle with one of Moore's old characters, Tao, was a laugh-and-a-half. Check this: what happens when a villian who depends on twisting logic through complex sentences meets up with Grunge? The painful illogic and Who cares? attitude of the grunge-man end in a headache for Tao. Grunge is definately the humoroius focal point. In the one when Grunge is "transformed into a giant, hairy monkey," the running gag response is "'transformed?'"
Buy it and enjoy. I know I did.
Awesome art, terrible argument.......2001-11-04
Gen 13 was always good because of the characters and art. Don't imagine anything more than that in this book.
The history is previsible and very lame.

Book Description
Little League baseball has come a long way. Organized into leagues and tournaments, today it's big business, a global entity in over a hundred countries. And every year in modest Williamsport, Pennsylvania, it all comes down to 16 teams of kids eying the ultimate prize: the Little League World Series.
The 2005 World Series featured Little League's greatest ending on its biggest stage. Now seen in over five million homes, the thrilling final game of the Series was the most dramatic in the fifty-eight year history of the Little League. With full access to the players, coaches and parents associated with both teams who played in that game, Charles Euchner delivers an astonishing and dramatic narrative that delves into every aspect of the teams involved: from training, coaching and parenting stressed out kids to politics, controversy and the ever expanding role of corporations.
Welcome to the hype, the hope and the soul of youth baseball.

Major league preparation. Bush league execution........2007-07-18
I was excited to read this book when I saw it at my local library. I had just finished managing my kids' little league t-ball team (5 to 7 year olds) and was ready to read about kids playing at a higher level. I came out of the experience bewildered and disappointed.
Little League, Big Dreams is a jaundiced, uneven account of the little league world series and all of organized youth baseball. Charles Euchner did an excellent job researching the book. However, the writing is disjointed, and the structure of the book is almost impossible to follow. It seems like the book may have started as a series of articles because much information is repeated throughout the book. (How many times does the reader need to be told that Dante Bichette quit major league baseball upon hearing that his son hit his first little league homerun?)
While I agree with many of the points the writer attempted to make in this book, the unevenness throughout does little to bring those points home. In addition, His "Let the kids play" conclusion was too simplistic and not at all developed. Did I mention that Dante Bichette quit major league baseball upon hearing that his son hit his first little league homerun?
Did Not Hold my Attention.......2007-02-13
I'm not a big fan of non-fiction, but I am an avid reader and have been coaching Little League for a number of years. Normally, I think most non-fiction texts can and should be shrunk down by 90% and placed in a magazine so their narrative doesn't run dry. This book is a solid case in point. I got bored after four chapters and had to put the book down. It's not that the writing was bad, it's that the book went into too much detail about people I didn't care about.
If only this were an article in Sports Illustrated!
Little League - too much pressure on the Kids.......2006-09-15
This is an excellent book on the inner happenings of Little League Baseball. I really enjoyed the candid assesments of how parents and managers go overboard. The book though is not a bashing of the little league faults - it gives inside looks at what happens at williamsport and the teams...I really enjoyed the stories about the ugly rivalry between California and Florida and how Dante Bichette Sr. got out of control - also the stories about Curacao and Japan and how serious they take the game - the stories about the pitcher's not resting their arms and getting major injuries is a wake up...
Finally, the story centers on Hawaii and how they built their team swithcing from Pony to Little League - and how they practiced so hard - 6 days a week! Great stories about Little league baseball and how Travel teams are so much better and talented (cooperstown baseball)...
if you enjoy youth baseball - you'll love this book

Enjoyable.......2001-05-16
Goldman relates some funny anedotes in this book. That's mainly what it is, a bunch of anecdotes. He's ridiculously dramatic when relating his personal life, and his bleeding-heart-liberal moments are almost laughable in their (unintended) schmaltziness. And he is so opinionated about films, that, if you've seen the ones he's talking about, may scratch your head about the certaintly of his wrong-headed opinions. Despite those flaws, the book is very entertaining. And it inspired me to rent the movie he voted for the Cannes jury prize award (I won't say which one and give the surprise away), which, indeed, is a great film.
Entertaining.......2000-08-08
I loved this book. It has been quite a wait for the next Repairman Jack novel to arrive. I remember when I first read the the Tomb I was amazed and have been anticipating a new chapter ever since. This book did not dissapoint. My favorite chapter without giving to much away was Jack's booby trapped hideout and the suprises that it held in store for the thugs. I only had two minor gripes. I wish there was more of a supernatural element to the story like in the Tomb but that is just a personal preferance, also the relationship between Alicia and the cop never really seemed to have a purpose, it was all set up and had your interest but then it just dissapeared. Anyway read the book you will be entertained.
Entertaining.......1998-03-04
The writing in HYPE AND GLORY is sloppy beyond belief at times, but most of the anecdotes are amusing enough to keep you breezily turning the pages. For reading around the back yard this summer, this book should do the trick.

Book Description
The White House, America's oldest showcase for the performing arts, has offered a uniquely private yet highly public setting for ballads, instrumental music, opera, musical theater, jazz, and dance. In this eminently readable book, the author tells the story of the mansion's richly diverse ceremonial traditions and festive guest performances, as well as the cultural interests of our presidents and their first ladies from George Washington to George Bush. Entertaining and enlightening, Kirk's study provides fresh insights into the presidency, the performing arts, and the gradual emergence of America's unique national character. It is a must for anyone interested in American culture.
Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining and thoroughly researched........1999-09-05
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and discovered a wealth of fascinating information about our US presidents and their connections to music. Abraham Lincoln loved opera, Woodrow Wilson played the violin, Franklin Roosevelt liked to sing and Jimmy Carter was a Wagner enthusiast. One usually thinks of the Kennedys as the first to bring the arts to the White House, but the Coolidges and Hoovers were just as active in inviting famous guest performers to entertain, most notably Paderewski and Rachmaninoff.
What I especially loved about this book was its wide-ranging views of the role of music in American life. It is a wonderful cultural history, extremely well researched but easy to read with many humorous anecdotes. Teachers should find it a useful tool for classroom and interdisciplinary studies. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to learn more about the presidency and the musical history of our country.

Sweeping Overview.......2006-03-13
This book gives a great overview of the entire world of Warhammer - covering all the races, their motivations and backgrounds, history (including a timeline) and culture. The art was a bit bright and fancy, but I came away aghast with the depth of this world.
A GOOD READ!! A MUST BUY FOR WARHAMMER FANS!!!.......2003-03-14
this book is a great read for anybody that is starting in warhammer, if you are a veteran player, though, you might want to subscribe to white dwarf instead. the book is informative about almost any army, the magic, the units and the history of warhammer and the grudges that the races have with each other.
a must buy for warhammer fans!
nice.........2003-02-26
fantastic book from the man who worked as deputy editor for GW's citidel journal... and may I add, put so much bloody sweat and beer into it that it actually got out on time for the few month's he was there... (nice one)
...anyhow, the book, ignore the front cover (not my fav piece of artwork) but you should never judge a book by it's cover.. a fantastic read, very imformitive and enlightening and great for both new player and old veterans. :)
a definate buy for all GW or warhammer fans!
Most overated book ever.......2001-11-01
I was so dissapointed after reading this book. I read every single part word for word and did not learn anything. At the same time, I could not put it down. I guess thats the story of my life. And what was that stuff about chickens all about.
A Colorful Guide to Warhammer.......2001-05-01
The book is a colorful summary of the Warhammer hobby setting. This may be interesting to new players of the game systems. All the materials, however, have appeared in one form or another in the game rulebooks or magazines so it doesn't really offer anything new to experienced players.

Customer Reviews:
Good Quality, Poor Quantity.......2007-09-19
The substance of the information presented was genuinely useful knowledge. The first 2 or 3 chapters really give a good analysis of the value of a customer. The extensive examples that follow are merely verbose repetitions of the previously presented (and actually well supported) concepts. Sadly there is not a Harvard Business Review for this book, but there should be, to cut down on absorbtion time. Not a waste of money, but perhaps time.
Very interesting customer life time model but a bit weak in customer strategy level.......2007-03-16
Book is centered around understanding customer life time value and what is the required mind set and strategy to drive customer life time value as a business driver.
Life time value model is very very interesting because of its simplicity yet usability - I plan to use it. However where the book is no delivering is its strategy angle. Customer strategy is too much simplified as how do you drive customer acquisition and retention with different programs highlighting the loyalty programs (and also setting some question marks on it). What the book does not address is the core mindset of customer driven business strategies: How companies should understand the business they are in from outside in view i.e. from customer side: what is the category we are in, what is the mindshare we have among our customers, how are we integrating our business and the offerings to our customers' businesses and lifes, what alternative business models we have to drive life time value.
But because the life time value is useful and the book as total is rather enjoyable to read I recommend this book
The Customer Lifetime Value approach to business strategy.......2006-12-18
"Managing Customers..." does a wonderful job of providing a holistic approach to customer lifetime value (CLV).
Founded on the principle of viewing customers as assets, the book provides a super-efficient, highly-impactful read on transforming the CLV principle into actionable tactics in key aspects of business - fusing marketing, finance, and organizational structure into a well-aligned strategy for enabling a business to maximize the value it creates & derives from customers. Truly a must read for students of business.
On a side note - just wanted to express how impressed I have been with all of The Wharton School books that I have read to date - they are truly some of the finest business books available.
Highly recommended to all marketing executives.......2006-07-12
How much are your customers worth? If financiers and investors had bothered to ask themselves this basic question, they might have prevented the Internet bubble and other expensive corporate mistakes. Such disasters can occur when people invest in businesses with no earnings and fanciful business models. Authors and professors Sunil Gupta and Donald Lehmann make a powerful case that executives should abandon outdated business-evaluation models based on traditional financial metrics, such as cash flows. Instead, they should rely on the present and future value of their businesses' customers: the "customer's lifetime value," or CLV. The authors discuss these issues in understandable language and buttress their arguments with formulas that will enable marketers to implement their ideas. They also provide helpful examples that are like mini business-school case studies. We highly recommend this book to all marketing executives, as well as to executives who are financially responsible for mergers and acquisitions, or advertising. This book could change the way you do business and increase your earnings from your best customers.
Important metrics for effective customer management.......2005-12-12
Are you spending more on your customers than they are worth? That is the question these authors attempt to answer in this book. Whether it is acquisition cost or retention cost many businesses may be spending too much on their customers. As with all investments there is a time to increase investment, a time to hold them, and a time to let them go. This is a detailed analysis of how to develop metrics for your company that help determine customer value. With increasing customers there are increasing costs. Once you have developed your metrics they show how to use that information to determine things like customer lifetime value. Once you know their lifetime value you can make effective marketing and management decisions related to your customers. You have to manage your customers in order to manage your business. Now you can determine how to best manage your customers. A practical approach to managing customers that is both effective and easy to apply while providing real results. Managing Customers as Investments is a recommended read for all marketing and customer-centric managers as well as all corporate executives.
