Masculinities Special Issue
The overwhelming majority of books and articles on fashion focus on women. But of course men get dressed too. The prevailing stereotype is that women spend more time thinking about and buying clothes, but not only do the essays in this stimulating issue overturn this stereotype -- they also show that, historically at least, men’s clothes were of paramount importance to their self-presentation, particularly with respect to sexual identity.

Book Description
The importance of studying the body as a site for the deployment of discourses is well-established. By contrast, the study of dress has traditionally suffered from a lack of critical analysis. Fashion Theory takes as its starting point a definition of fashion as the cultural construction of the embodied identity. It provides an international and interdisciplinary forum for the analysis of cultural phenomena ranging from foot binding to fashion advertising. Fashion Theory provides a vital contribution to cultural studies, art, history, literary criticism, anthropology, fashion history, media studies, gender studies, folklore studies and sociology. It is multi-disciplinary, features international coverage and is heavily illustrated.

Book Description
G.I. Joe is the codename for Amercia's daring and highly trained special mission force. Its purpose: to defend freedom against COBRA, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. Two action-packed story arcs in one thick volume! Includes the entire "Malfunction" storyline, featuring Cobra's latest hi-tech menace, the all-new Battle Android Trooper. Also, "Homecoming," a story about Bazooka, Alpine, Mutt and Rock N Roll finding their small town vacation turning into a COBRA-filled nightmare.
Customer Reviews:
Nostaligic fan: Cobra at it again!.......2003-08-31
This is a great read. Though not as good as Reckoning. I was hoping for them to backtrack and go into more detail on recent events between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow. But all in all a great issue.
Owning about 80% of the original Marvel series, getting back into the Joe/Cobra feud is a great experience.
I'm happy they are transferring all the issues into graphic novel as the story line progresses, rather than wait as long as Marvel did to release their graphic novels. It's got all the different factions of Cobra battling for a bigger share of the pie.

A collection of the best of Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer's first three-years plus a new 17-page story.
Customer Reviews:
Pretensions stripped away........2002-12-31
As a gentile, I bought copies for friends to show them insights Katchor gives of "ourselves" through Knipl's words/actions/self-doubts. Nostalgia, combined with 'layers' of deep, Jewish wisdom, humour and pathos makes this something all generations should read.
Like staring into a mirror at the back of your head.......2002-05-08
Mozart was born to make music whereas Ben Katchor has the gift of capturing the essence of free enterprise and the soul of Everyman in 20th century America. My God, if Katchor had been alive in the 1800's, what conclusions could we have drawn from that age? Don't stop, Katchor! You're onto something that will endure. Your insight is amazing. Your humor is matchless.
an introduction to the world of julius knipl.......2002-05-04
This book is where it all begins. Strange, beautiful stories that make you take notice of the aspects of the world that you might miss. Required reading if you have ever lived in New York. -yakov
Ben Katchor's Stirring Comic Strip.......2000-02-01
Julius P. Knipl Real Estate Photographer is a comic strip celebrating sentimental reminders of a world behind us now. Cheap Novelities is a collection of these comics that speak of the way things used to be, the way things are, and the way things should be. The main character, Julius Knipl, is a reserved witness to the changes of progress and the artifacts of society hidden below the surface. Knipl points out the importance of decorative molding, ceiling fans in a metropolitan summer, the lonely but essential task of elevator inspectors, the implications of a soup factory closing and so on. The writing is moving, disturbing, and subtley hilarious. I find myself quoting these strips from time to time. Cheap Novelties is a fantastic read.
I read this book over and over.......1999-03-06
and I can't believe no one else has ever reviewed it. These stories are about a never-never New York, filled with oddness and with indelible characters. The artwork is challenging: shadowy ink drawings that appear off-the-cuff but reveal, on inspection, a flood of detail and nuance.
Julius Knipl is an amazing creation: a funny man with many funny tics, and a man whose loneliness is terribly moving. There's a sequence in "Cheap Novelties" that concerns Knipl's attendance at the funeral of an old friend; I'm not sure I've ever seen so much emotion rendered with so little ink. My eyes mist over every time I think of it.

Pavlova...Nijinsky...the Russian dance virtuosi who created the ballet superstar. Here they are elegantly captured in the form of 2 paper dolls with 30 costumes from their roles. Paper dolls faithful facsimiles; costumes rendered from Benois, Bakst, Paquin originals. Dances, dates, full-color delight for collector, dance lover.
Customer Reviews:
Pavlova and Nijinsky.......2005-04-16
Fans of ballet and paper dolls will love this book. It is one of Tom Tierney's best works.
The dancers are faithfully portrayed and the attention to detail of the costumes is excellent. It must have been difficult to decide how to color the costumes since only black and white photos exist of them today, but Tom Tierney's choice of color strikes one as authentic.
I especially liked the costumes from "Scheherazade", "The Blue God" and "The Afternoon of a Faun".
Talented artist, beautiful dolls.......1998-06-05
These are some of the most beautiful paper dolls I have seen. Tierney does his usual meticulous job at recreating the (often highly eccentric) cosumes of these famous dancers. My only problem with them is that the pose of the Nijinsky doll is often at odds with the actual ballets--he never moved like that in Apres midi d'un faune--but that is minor. This is a treasure for anyone interested in paper dolls or ballet.

Book Description
A groundbreaking approach to successful performance improvement
Almost every executive in business today is faced with the challenge of improving performance, from incremental improvements to wholesale organizational change. Here, a world-renowned expert in organizational improvement asserts that most hard-won changes don't last for long, however, because of the inability to identify the root causes of the problem. How Organizations Work offers a clear, integrated solution to performance improvement via a new "Enterprise Model"-which takes into account all variables that influence performance. Alan Brache provides a comprehensive "physical exam" for checking an organization's vital signs and a 360-degree picture of how organizational dynamics can be harnessed to effect permanent improvements in performance.
Customer Reviews:
A STRAIGHT-FORWARD BOOK ABOUT STRENGTHENING ORGANIZATION........2002-07-25
Using a model of an enterprise, this book is a guide for exploring key aspects of organization, revealing how they are interrelated, and assessing them. The work focuses on: the external environment; leadership; strategy; business processes; goals and measurement; human capabilities; knowledge management; organizational structure; and culture. There are self-assessment questions throughout the book and numerous guidelines for diagnosing and designing a healthy organizational. Illustrations are used to flesh-out the diagnostic process. The work is a how-to guide; it is well organized, comprehensive, and highly useful. As a management consultant in organization analysis and design, as well as editor of Stern's Management Review, I seldom have encountered a book on this subject that is as straight-forward in its delivery of value as this work. Highly recommended.
Finally, a book true to the words of the jacket..........2002-06-03
How many times have we been disappointed in the content of a book after having been impressed by the slick words on the jacket? Well, prepare yourself! Sometimes things really are the way they are stated. No illusions. And this is just such the case with Alan Brache's new book "How Organizations Work."
From his opening quotation of holistic unity from Chief Seattle on the jacket to his final inspiring words at the conclusion of the book, Brache ties all the elements of improving organization performance together in a scholarly, yet easy to read creation. His "Enterprise Model" for organizations, provides an impressive blueprint or x-ray for understanding the "complex network of interlocking factors" which contribute to How Organizations Work.
Using a model analogous to human biology, Brache has provided a framework within which we might better understand our organizations and the various factors that influence performance.
It is a great, easy read -- just in time for our serious summer reading list. Enjoy!
Alan Brache Does It Again.......2002-02-15
It is refreshing to run across a business book that goes beyond generalizations. In How Organizations Work, Alan Brache deconstructs the business organization to reveal all the elements of which it is made up. He then examines each, methodically, raising questions that really enable an executive to take stock and stock planning for improvement.
I worked with Alan many years ago, and I'm pleased to say that he is as lucid and logical as ever--and remains just as witty. His writing is crisp and to the point, and the real-life case studies that he intersperses ensure that the reader is never bored.
Alan has done a fine job with a subject that, in other hands, could have been not only dull but also purely theoreti-cal. Instead, this is a book you can read once to get the big picture, then go back to again and again for practical day-to-day advice.
Dale Corey, Business Writer & Researcher
This book provides insight on both the What and the HOW........2002-02-06
Reading "How Organizations Work" was not only an "easy read" [as was promised in the foreward] - but provided far more meaty content than one might expect.
In the game of golf there is an expression called "sneaky long". This is often used in reference to a golfer who seems to effortlessly swing at the ball and drives it much further than one might expect.
I would call Brache's book "sneaky profound". It makes a series of key points in such an easy way that if the reader is not careful - one might miss the nuggets of intellectual gold.
The book is full of valuable self assessment questions - which are easy to tailor to any given organization - given the investment of a little thought.
The repeated references to the central role of business processes have substance and meaning in the context of the "Enterprise Model".
This book is really worthwhile reading not just once - but two and maybe threee times to get full value.
