    Book Description

From the stony desolation of Jordan's desert, it is but a step through a doorway into the bath house of the Qusayr 'Amra hunting lodge. Inside, multicolored frescoes depict scenes from courtly life and the hunt, along with musicians, dancing girls, and naked bathing women. The traveler is transported to the luxurious and erotic world of a mid-eighth-century Muslim Arab prince. For scholars, though, Qusayr 'Amra, probably painted in the 730s or 740s, has proved a mirage, its concreteness dissolved by doubts about date, patron, and meaning. This is the first book-length contextualization of the mysterious monument through a compelling analysis of its iconography and of the literary sources for the Umayyad period. It illuminates not only the way of life of the early Muslim elite but also the long afterglow of late antique Syria.

      Book Description

Place all the fashion photographs taken in a given year end to end, and what you have is a very long, very misleading footpath back to the blunt centre. Alternately, every year Fashion Images de Mode filters out the same-old-same-old set pieces and the rehashed mediocrity to deliver the cutting edge of world fashion images - all in one building. Globally recognized as a leading brand in fashion and photography, the rigorously selected shoots form a style bible for the year, crossed with a crystal ball into the coming seasons. Edited by Lisa Lovatt-Smith, this year's deluxe swagbag of sexy, shouty and brilliantly subtle victories for human decor features a meditation on the fine art of androgyny by Mariuccia Casadio with illustrations from Annette Aurell, an in-depth look at the legacy of Jean Loup Sieff by Tiggy Maconochie and the personal choice of uber-chic photographer Terry Richardson. With a preface by Rankin and photographic contributions from David LaChapelle, Elaine Constantine, Katerina Jebb, Andrea Giacobbe, Warren du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, this year's publication is as haute directional as it gets. Fashion Images de Mode: a thing of beauty and a resource forever.

You'd probaby get more for your money if you just subscribed to Vanity Fair Magazine and looked at the commercials.

1 out of 5 stars Degrading to women.......1998-11-19

If you like the type of photography that make women look like they are strung out on drugs then you may like this book; but if you are looking for a glamorous look at fashion do not buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge photography for the 90's!.......1998-08-24

This is a slick, colorful presentation of the "best of" fashion photography that has been published recently. It has a good variety of photographic styles by different photographers and makes a wonderful browsing book. This book will grace your coffee table very well

4 out of 5 stars Good research material.......2004-01-15

I just received ths book in the mail. I have numbers 5 and 6 and they are the best so far. This one is still stunning though. It is very hard to find good research books on contemporary fashion photography and Lisa Lovatt does an incredible job writing about the different styles and critiques of this medium. I highly recommend this title (especially nos. 5 and 6) for anyone interested in researching fashion photography. This book goes way beyond just eye candy and cheap fashion thrills. The images are incredible. I also recommend any books by Rankin (the founder of Dazed and Confused), Terry Richardson, LaChapelle; i-D, Surface, Picture and Vellum magazines.

      5 out of 5 stars Absoulutely Amazing.......2000-12-28

I received this book for my 17th birthday. I am a budding photographer and I hope to become involved in the fashion industry when I leave school. This book is fantastic. The images as well as the style of the photgographers was diverse and interesting. Photographers featured include David LaChapelle, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. I loved it and I would really recommend this book to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but not innovative.......2000-06-22

This book is very appealing to the eye with all the colors different models but the fact of the matter is...it's boring. I bought this book and I do like it but i had antisipated more fashion images. I seemed to get a book full of glossy so-so pictures. The pictures where more avant-garde than of that of fashion photography. If your interested in a fashion photography book, you should look into the impossible image or anything by Nick Night. Hotel lachapelle by David Lachapelle is an excellent fashion book as well. I would recommend those books over this one.

3 out of 5 stars it makes a fortune (not yours).......2000-06-13

well, it's their forth. good enough for people who don't read magazines at all, it gethers a lot of so-call contemporary fashion photos in a book for a good coffee-table vaule, but i think it's only "so-call contemporary", for something more contemporary, try "dazed/confused"

4 out of 5 stars Fashion Scope Without all the Poop.......2000-03-13

If you want to see the trends in action in a well presented layout, this is the ticket. Also has interesting interviews and articles with leading editors as well as photographers. If you're into fashion and aesthetics, go go gadget fashion!

              Book Description

Supposedly some of our brightest speakers, politicians say some pretty stupid things. Members of America's major political parties put out a roaring stream of downright dumb comments, pronouncements, and observations. For proof, look no further than Ted Rueter's two new books, 449 Stupid Things Republicans Have Said and 449 Stupid Things Democrats Have Said. The Dems fair little better in 449 Stupid Things Democrats Have Said. Al Gore said, "I would have kissed Tipper longer at the convention." Hillary Rodham Clinton, during a 2000 campaign interview with Hot 97, a Manhattan hip-hop radio station, stated, "Motown, Motown: That's my era. Those are my people." Rueter snags them all and provides two wonderful collections of quotations that will truly go down in history.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-07-29

I had a blast with this book. It really shows how these Dem's think! I loved the quote by Hillary Clinton "WE are president" if that doesn't say it all. Also, loved "God bless the America we are trying to create." -Hillary Rodham Clinton. Let's all hope she doesn't get the chance.

              5 out of 5 stars "I wish I hadn't said that!".......2005-11-12

This is just a little book of 138 pages, but it is packed with some great and humorous things Democrats have said over the years. Some of them may not have been too outrageous at the time, but in a while came back to haunt them.If you are a Democrat, with a thin skin, maybe you better pass this up and leave it for a Republican.I am sure you can find a similar book of Republican quotes which are just as funny. However,if you can get past political affiliations, you'll love this book.
Just to show you what you'll find in this little tome, here are a few I relished:
"If a president of the United States ever lied to the American
              people,he should resign"
-Bill Clinton, commenting on President Nixon and the
Watergate scandal while running for Congress in 1974.

"I remember when I first came to Washington. For the first
six months you wonder how the hell you ever got there. For the
next six months you wonder how the hell the rest of them got
              there."
              -Harry Truman (president,1945-1953)

"Sex is a bad thing because it rumples the clothes."
              -Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis (first lady,1961-1963)

"I have been called a 'stupid and pathetic country bumpkin,'
...compared to David Koresch, and blamed for a sixty-five
point drop in the stock market, but never have I been called
anything so repugnant...as a "Washington Insider."
              -James Carvill (political consultant)

"I'm not going to have some reporters pawing through our
              papers.We are the president."
              -Hillary Clinton (first lady,1993-2001),discussing
              possible release of Whitewater documents.

"Who is going to find out? These women are trash.Nobody's
              going to believe them."
-Hillary Rodham Clinton (first lay,1993-2001),on her
              husband's affairs.

"God bless the America we are trying to create."
              -Hillary Rodham Clinton

"I have to borrow money from her (his wife)to get a soft drink"
              -Jesse Jackson

" Thank you for saving me from the draft."
              -Bill Clinton (president,1993-2001),in a 1969 letter to
retired U.S. Army ROTC Colonel Eugene Holmes, chairman
              of Clinton's local draft board.

Even after all this,a politican is never lost for words!

Carefully go down this list of famous politicians/celebrities and answer truthfully whether you like them or dislike them overall. If you like more of the R's than the D's what does that tell you?

              (R) Ronald Reagan
              (R) George Bush Sr.
              (R) George W. Bush

              (R) George Pataki
              (R) Arnold Shwarzennegger

              (D) Al Sharpton
              (D) Michael Moore
              (D) Ben Affleck
              (D) Tim Robbins

"Republicans confront issues head-on and implement consistent structured ideals. Liberals use a more "conversational" approach of dealing with things on a case-by-case basis instead of using a set belief system."
              -Vic Gola

I think that above statement is key because "liberal" literally means "one with untraditional, unorthodox values, one not concerned with authoritarian attitudes, views or dogmas and completely tolerant to the ideas and behavior of others." It seems that liberals favor more proposals for reform and prefer new ideas for progress rather than sticking to something that's been done for centuries (whether it's right, wrong, or indifferent that's the republican way). Conservatives (or moderate democrats who have some conservative tendencies) tend to look at those from the far left to be overly loose, broad-minded, morally unrestrained individuals, which often equates to "soft" or "wishy-washy." Which, if further translated can clearly (or subconsciously) equate to "flip-flopping" or being unfit to command.

So I think Kerry lost because with these troubled times in our country, Americans want a little bit more of an old-fashioned guy in power, mainly because he asserts that very "power" with his belief system. And all the famous people on Bush's side agree with that system as opposed to the rebels on Kerry's side. I think people want more of a "Family Ties" type feeling over "Will & Grace."

Are you more of a Michael Stivik or an Archie Bunker?

              5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-09-03

This is a funny book. Neither party is immune from "Foot in Mouth Disease" It's great that we can laugh at ourselves from time to time. This is very important! There are enough bad and tragic things in the world, and Ted Rueter does a good job showing us where our political funny bone is.

              Thanks Ted..

broadcaster and author of "Our Brown-Eyed Boy"

5 out of 5 stars A Reality Check for Your Political Sanity.......2004-04-04

One of the biggest challenges for any instructor of university level American Politics courses is how to overcome the cynicism and boredom of today's freshmen for things political. Luckily, we now have help from one of our colleagues, Dr. Ted Rueter. The two books, 449 Most Stupid Things Said by Democrats and its companion volume, 449 Most Stupid Things Said by Republicans, are 898 arrows of comedy able to pierce even the most opaque veil of student cynicism. These quotes are zingers that really work to liven up a lecture or shorten that cross-country flight. If you can laugh as you read this book (and you will!), don't worry, your political sanity has been confirmed!

              Book Description

This volume brings under one cover the dozens of essays and lectures that first began appearing at the website HollywoodJesus.com in December of 2001. Since then, Greg Wright has analyzed and anticipated the cinematic choices of director Peter Jackson with almost prophetic critical insight. He rightly attributes the success of Jackson's trilogy to the power of film itself, the power of Jackson's artistry and the original power of J. R. R. Tolkien's literary masterwork. In so doing, Wright provides an educational, entertaining and respectful look at the process of bringing a much-loved novel to the screen.

With his first book, Tolkien in Perspective (VMI, 2003), Wright stepped forward as a "moderating and non-reactionary guide" to the confusion of voices regarding The Lord of the Rings. In assembling a comprehensive and engaging discussion of Peter Jackson's award-winning adaptation, Wright now moves to the front of the pack. Nowhere else in print is there to be found such an extensive examination of the spiritual and artistic implications of the 21st Century's first cinematic masterwork.

3 out of 5 stars Review or religious sermon?.......2007-05-13

I bought and read this book and was quite taken aback that although the author did bring out some very interesting insights and reviews about Peter Jackson and the adaptation of Tolkien's works, too many references to Christ and religious revelations supposedly "hidden" in LOTR made it sound more like an Evangelist sermon. I didn't need an editorial how Gandalf's fall at Khazad-dum and later return represented Jesus rising from the grave or Aragorn ushering in the Messianic era, or Sauron representing the anti-Christ.
Perhaps the book should have been titled "Peter Jackson in Christian Religious Perspective."

1 out of 5 stars Religious take on Tolkien.......2007-02-14

Unfortunately, despite the title, there is no "behind" the movies at all. No background as to the making of or powerbrokering of the movies. Furthermore the book is infused with a whole lot of religious mumbo-jumbo - one lot of fairytales trying to compare itself to another lot of fairytales.

4 out of 5 stars Kept in perspective.......2005-01-25

Perhaps the biggest controversy among J.R.R. Tolkien's fans is: Are Peter Jackson's films masterpieces, or travesties? Greg Wright tackles this question in his second book on Tolkien and Middle-Earth, "Peter Jackson In Perspective: The Power Behind Cinema's 'The Lord of the Rings.'" And Wright handles it with remarkable objectivity and grace.

Wright starts with an examination of novels vs. movies -- after all, the flow and content of each is completely different -- and the disastrous past attempts to film "Lord of the Rings." He even tells the story of his first viewing of Ralph Bakshi's infamous rotoscoped cartoon.

He then takes a hard look at what Jackson cut out, what characters are MIA (Tom Bombadil, for good or ill), whether it helps or hurts the story, the presence of love and romance, the way that Jackson filmed the three stories, and compares Jackson's efforts to the Rankin-Bass cartoons. I give you three guesses which Wright declares to be better, and the first two don't count.

And as in his first book "Tolkien in Perspective: Sifting the Gold From the Glitter," Wright gives his analysis a faith bent. For example, when talking about Gandalf's fall into Khazad-dum, he reflects that many have noticed the crucifix-lookalike pose that Gandalf falls in.

Wright doesn't overburden his narrative with rambling or ponderous opinions. Instead he writes like an intelligent pal who's telling you his thoughts on the movies he's seen recently. However, he never loses sight of the important themes in either the movies or books.

What's more, he's able to keep a balanced, calm look at the novels and movies. Although some points can be debated (one can argue that there is some religious presence in the films), his attitude has an objectivity that many fans and authors cannot fully achieve.

""Peter Jackson In Perspective: The Power Behind Cinema's 'The Lord of the Rings'" is a solid read for anyone wanting a balanced look at the movies vs. the books.

5 out of 5 stars Book meets movie and expands the mind.......2004-12-10

The great thing about The Lord of the Rings is what J. R. R. Tolkien called "applicability," or the ability of his myths to speak to everyone who reads them where he or she is. Too often those of us who love his work, and those who write up big explorations of his themes and symbology act as though we have found THE key to understanding Tolkien. That's trying to cram his myth into allegory, which he would have hated passionately. Tolkien's genius is that his myth sustains many of these explanations simultaneously because it is myth and encompasses much more reality than mere fact or truth could. (See On Fairy Stories for an explanation of this.)

Greg Wright has the ability to explore Tolkien's themes and yet not set his explanations in stone. Then he highlights these themes as they did or did not show up in the film. My enjoyment of Tolkien and insights into his work, and the ways in which it was interpreted in the movies directed by Peter Jackson was expanded in Greg's collection of ongoing musings. Greg also has a great gift for keeping it short, sweet, and clearly logical-which means there is more to continue thinking about after he's got you started. He also has a good feel for how literature, image and culture intersect to bring about our engagement with this story in both book and film. If you want an exploration of Tolkien that comes in small bites and opens up new vistas in Middle-earth for you and sends you off on new mental quests, this book is a winner.

Then here it is - play the Germans during WWII. The book gives you everything you need - the history of the war from the German point of view, details about the Wehrmacht, how to design characters and details about the weapons. Also chapters about the home front, the front line and how to run a campaign. You can be realistic or add superweapons to give the German side a chance. GURPS Basic Set or GURPS WWII is required to use this supplement.

Fails to provide a good set of character roles to play, especially for women. Also lacks for scenerios. Supporting information also lacking.

Complete disapointment. Needs more research and better development.

"GURPS: World War Two: Iron Cross" is the first large sized supplement to Steve Jackson Games' attempt to bring the battles of WWII to life for gamers.

There are six chapters in this book again - but there is quite a bit of additional detail in these chapters. Starting with "Germany At War", this chapter covers German history in a capsule format again. The detail about the course of the war for Germany and the Germans can even be appreciated by non-gamers for its attention to even how German families were affected by World War Two. "The German Army" chapter gives a comprehensive section on the Armies of the Fatherland. This additional info on the German Army adds richness to the background promised in GURPS WWII. "Characters" gives you everything you need to create German PC's and NPC's for a WWII campaign. The characters section adds more to what is already known by WWII GM's, and includes 4 more sample characters. The additional character templates in this section give GM's a look at the finer details of German characters and life. The "German Armoury" chapter gives GM's a more detailed look at German armament and vehicles. Almost every weapon and most vehicles used by the Germans is in this section. "Inside the Third Reich" looks at socialism, the courts, and life while under the Reich. There's even a look at the POW camps and concentration camps inside the Third Reich. In "Campaigns" there's campaigning info for players and GM's. This campaign info includes style and substance info, and several alternate timelines and histories to explore for creative GM's.

This book is a fine addition to the WWII info started in GURPS: World War Two. This book answers the challenge of bringing some depth to the already rich campaign available for World War Two. There are other books already printed continuing the series, and more forthcoming. I can't recommend "GURPS World War Two: Iron Cross" highly enough for GM's wanting to "fill in the blanks". This book is a great addition to the GURPS library and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to try an adventure or a whole campaign set in this time of peril. One would hope that similar detail will be also be present in the forthcoming GURPS: World War II: "Japanese" book.

                    Book Description

According to Robyn Waters, it's a myth that trends can only be spotted early by überhip Bohemian types who are ever so much cooler than everyone else.

She ought to know. As Target's former VP of Trend, Design, and Product Development, Waters helped a dowdy regional discount chain become a national fashion destination. Today she consults for many different companies to help them stay ahead of the curve.

The Trendmaster's Guide features her favorite tips and examples for understanding and anticipating trends. Every letter from A to Z offers an insight to help readers navigate the unknown and prepare for whatever their costomers want next. It's a quick read that packs a lot of insight between “A is for antennae” and “Z is for Zen.”

Anyone can use the tools in The Trendmaster's Guide to become more aware of the world around them. Even if you weren't born with a trendspotting bone in your body, you don't have to be a follower forever. No one these days can afford to just be catching on when others are already moving on.

Waters stresses that recognizing and reacting to trends is a learned skill, and it can be acquired without spending time in the streets of Milan or the high schools of Orange County. If you've ever witnessed a trend unfolding and said to yourself, “I should have seen this coming,” there's hope. You too can become a trendmaster.

Frankly, not impressed at all with this book nor its writer. Full of fluff and "truthiness" (a person who claims to know something intuitively, instinctively, or "from the gut" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or actual facts). A perfect word to describe this book, coined by our good friend, Stephen Colbert.

                    This book sucked./

This book was very disappointing, to say the least. It was terribly superficial and shallow, and lacked any intellectual sense of marketing expertise. After reading this book, I think anyone can understand why the author, Ms. Waters, was let go from Target...because fluff just doesn't sell.

5 out of 5 stars Tendmaster's Guide is the new trend.......2005-08-20

This book is the trend catechism, a must-have for any company or department trying to understand how to make their company, products or services more appealing to consumers. With examples from the Hotel Monaco to dish soap, Waters serves up relevant examples that tell how fledgling trend spotters and entrepreneurs can sharpen their skills. And because it is all based on Waters' experience as VP of Design and Development at Target, the hottest "class for mass" retail store on the planet, you know she knows what she's talking about. You can read Trendmaster's Guide on the train and be enlightened on your way to work, because this book is exactly what's it's supposed to be: short, quick, revelatory. It's well worth the $13.

                    5 out of 5 stars Pithy & Powerful.......2005-07-27

I have never read so much in so small a space. Ms. Waters has captured the essence of trend-watching she's obviously learned from her years in business (especially as a significant contributor to Target's success) and she has distilled many of these down in this pithy & powerful book.

Make no mistake: this is not a lengthy text book (thank God). Ms. Waters undoubtedly has much more flesh to put on these tasty bones. One can only hope she will be following-up this gem of an introduction to trend-watching with future insightful books. If you're a child, you'll be waiting for the next "Harry Potter" book; if you're a marketing professional, you need to be waiting for the next Robyn Waters book!

                    2 out of 5 stars Fulfilling a Dream.......2005-07-11

The book purportedly has 26 ideas (A to Z) but being a consultant, she gave very little away to the reader. One would just have to read and make the quantum leap yourself. Most of the more detailed sharing were from her days at Target. All in all, the book fulfils her dream of writing and publishing a book and that is about it.
