Rather Bland.......2006-02-14

Buchwald's "Beating Around the Bush" takes jabs at politicians, corporations, and the media. It is comprised of a number of Buchwald's newspapers columns on current events.

The humor is there, but not nearly as strong as with fellow satirists Al Franken and Bill Maher. Topics addressed include Iraq (it's the only war we've got, so we have to support it), Compassionate Conservatives (someone who wants to help the working poor, the undeducated, and the unemployed - not with money, but with prayers and tax cuts), Wal-Mart (solving one of America's biggest problems - sending jobs overseas, by keeping cleaning jobs here and bringing foreigners here to do them), and Zell Miller (had a heart transplant after giving keynote speech for Clinton in '92 - this allowed him to bash Democrats at Republican '04 Convention).

I'd go with Franken or Maher instead.

Still Going Strong.......2005-11-23

Art Buchwald is one of the most influential newspaper columnists of the past half-century and one of the greatest humorists in the history of American journalism. So when he comes out with a new collection of columns, it is indeed a cause for celebration.

Buchwald has been plying his trade, which is to make us laugh at the absurdities of modern life, for an astounding 56 years. Along the way, he has won the Pulitzer Prize, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, has built a legion of fans and has written 32 books. "Beating Around the Bush" is his 33rd. It's also one of his best.

Buchwald works in two ways: His columns are fresh and funny snapshots of our society, but when the topicality wears off and they appear in a book one to four years after they were originally published, they become little history lessons, still funny and still, amazingly, fresh. Or, at least, not stale.

Fans of the Bush administration may not appreciate some of the jabs Buchwald takes, but fans of the Clinton administration probably didn't appreciate the jabs the humorist took at Bill and Hillary in his previous collection, "We'll Laugh Again."

Buchwald is an equal-opportunity jabber. His humor is never cruel or mean-spirited, but it always hits the mark. It's remarkable considering he suffered and fully recovered from a massive stroke five years ago, recently turned 80 and shows no signs of slowing down.

Thanks for all the laughs, Art. Keep them coming.

Author Jim Hightower is not, as the title of his recent book about the George W. Bush administration indicates, a fan of equivocation. "The Bushites are--let me put this politely as I can--NUTS!" he writes, "They're insane. They're zealots totally dedicated to implementing their plutocratic, autocratic, militaristic, and imperialistic vision of America." The chapters in Hightower's book are prefaced by a series of reasons Bush fans may give for supporting the President followed by blistering and often highly entertaining refutations of those reasons. Meanwhile his down-home humor and polemical wackiness can be tiresome, occasionally getting in the way of efforts to clearly make a point. Enjoying the lifting of the veil from an extremeley dangerous individual.The material is all in the public domain but this places it between two covers. The subject should probably be secured in a locked ward at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

There are no perfect sides to take in politics. We can only fulfill our obligation to this country and our fellow countrymen by being inquisitive, willing to listen, and being able to make up our own minds without the need to lambaste others who do not share our 'family values' or belief in the current 'plutocracy'.
Before we get our panties in a twist over a dissenting voice perhaps we should do some research on the author, his experience, his justifications, and make an intelligent, correctly spelled retort, or commendation. Jeez, as far as I know, it's still a free country, unless the 'hatred' perceived by the rabid right shuts down dissent altogether.

Especially after this tragic election in which Bush and GOP won, as a true conservative, I can't blame Jim Hightower for poking fun at the current neo-cons who have given us good conservatives a bad rap. If you're a non-conservative, you shouldn't have trouble getting a few laughs from it. For you conservatives out there who are tired of the current neocons taking you for granted by exploiting the macho weakness, read this book and learn to stop beating around the bushes but instead sledgehammer the neocons and get the last laugh. And I say the same to liberals and moderates who are sick and tired of being called weak !

Hightower pulls no punches in this witty and insightful look at GW and his policies. The cartoons are hilarious. If you're already a fan of Hightower's weekly coloums then this will be right up your alley. If you're not a fan then this book will easily make you one.

This book was...interesting. I would have liked some proof of some of the information, while on subjects like food and the environment, for all our sakes I can only hope he was exaggerating.
The best things in this book are the tongue-in-cheek intros, outlandish though they are.
Overall, this book was pretty good. Not the best read if you're a Republican seeing if you should swing your vote, but it's good for Democrats to get a laugh.

The elephants, lions, giraffes and other animals not so familiar to most of us paraded across the television screen in front of Clara Lee and Condit Brown. What a marvelous spectacle. The program, Your Zoo, was showing movies of an African safari, which had taken place the year before and been organized locally. William Hoff, executive director of the Cincinnati Zoological Park, who was conducting the program, then mentioned that another safari was being planned for the coming Fall. In one voice the two excited viewers exclaimed: "I'd like to go, too."

Thus began a memorable and exciting three-week experience for the author and her husband. Excitement truly reigned supreme and anticiption became their constant companion as they began preparations for the trip. Proper clothing had to be chosen, various shots to be taken, and the inevitable bags to be packed. Finally all was ready, and they were soon on their plane and headed for Africa.

What a rare experience - to go on safari and see the world. From Cincinnati, the party went to New York, London, Frankfurt, and Rome. Then came Entebbe and Nairobi, all by air. Next, there followed a two thousand mile journey over land through Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Then by air again to Kartoom, Athens, Basle, Zurich, LOndon, Montreal, and back to New York. Halfway around the world and through the wilds of Africa in only three weeks - weeks that would miraculously spring to life again and again in the hearts and minds of the safari party.

Every reader, young and old alike, will enjoy this light-hearted, illustrated account of what happened when 33 Cincinnatians invaded Africa. Certainly nothing stirs one's imagination more than the feeling that he, too, is taking part in the action. Thus, perhaps the urge will overcome you also, and one day you'll actually find yourself experiencing the thrill and adventure of going on safari to Africa.

Line The Parrot's Cage With This Pathetic Tome.......2007-08-30

When a biographer gives an innacurate birthdate for his subject, you know the book's credibility is less than zero. Ms Bankhead was born January 31, 1902, not, as David Bret claims, 1903. There is nothing new to be gleaned from this shabby pastiche of heresay and fabrication. Buy Brendan Gill's marvelous (out-of-print) "Tallulah" to get the true story.

All Hail the Ed Wood of Biographers!.......2000-10-28

After reading this book, I can assure you that the definitive biography of Tallulah Bankhead has yet to be written. The reader suffers through 250+ pages of garbled prose, which revels in the salacious details of Ms. Bankhead's life, only to find that he/she knows no more about the PERSON who was Tallulah than at the onset of the book. Furthermore, though Mr. Bret claims to have extensively researched his subject, the book conveys little firsthand knowledge of Tallulah or the people she knew. Most quotations in the book stem not from interviews, but from secondhand sources. The result is a laughingly bad work, on a par with any supermarket tabloid. Therefore, I beg you to save your money and buy the National Enquirer.

Scandalous doesn't begin to cover this legend's life.......1999-01-09

It is hard to imagine anyone leading a fuller life than Tallulah Bankhead. She did it all -- twice. The book jacket points out that she had 500 lovers of both sexes. She smoked 150 cigarettes a day and drank even while performing on the Broadway stage. The author has written a well researched book that points out the enigma that was Bankhead. She could be willful and spoiled as a child and yet keep people on her payroll years after firing them. Through all the tumult and excesses of her personal life, she still managed to give many engaging performances. In the end, her lust for life caught up with her and her lifestlye killed her at a relatively young age. Tallulah Bankhead is still a fascinating character and this book is a fascinating read.

Pure Puzzling Pleasure.......2000-07-09

Always a fan of the late lamented Games Magazine, I sharpened my pencil and sat down for a long afternoon of mental enjoyment with Games Best Pencil Puzzles Volume 2. I was not disappointed. This book will keep me busy on and off for weeks. I especially like the Paint By Numbers section, which is a mental logic problem of multiple simultaneous equations that really captivated my mathematical mind. I also enjoyed the crossword puzzles. My only complaint is that some of the clues are somewhat dated; they refer to people and events that were current years ago. Now that I think about it, I guess I have another complaint; my husband keeps picking this book up and writing in it, in pen!

For an excellent variety of puzzles, from easy to difficult, from crosswords to cryptics to logic to wacky wordies, this is a great choice. I recommend it to all, particularly those people who loved Games magazine, as did I.

The title of this book is decieving.......2007-09-10

This book is a human resource management book covering different areas in HR management with many boring and tedious examples. The book focuses on interview setting questions, employement and hiring. I was looking for a book on language, word structure and influencing techniques but this book is the complete opposite. In addition, this book does not have a "search inside" option nor a description.

Brilliant.......2007-08-27

I would recommend this book to anyone who has studied nlp or interested in the art of influence and wishes to further expand their knowledge. This books describeds meta programs in a very simple and straight forward way and how they are structured to fit the workplace, relationships (personal or professional) or any other context where you need to get yourself across efficiently and effectively.

Believe me when i say this is not a business book..it has a very readable writing style and helpful summary / appendicies section. I would recommend this book to anyone who really want's to use words that will change minds!

This book is easy to read and very informative. If you have done NLP training you would have come across the Meta Programs, then this book takes your learnings to another level and gives indepth information on behaviours of people. A must read if you want to increase your ability to read people and their behaviours.

Great way to develop communication skills for change and better being!.......2007-07-29

This book is a great source of knowledge for people inner worlds from a perspective of who we get motivated, how we make desicions and move to action.
For those who know NLP it is a great guide for metaprograms and a lot of practical samples for the real life.
It is mainly focused on how to get results improving our communication skills, discovering how we can design our conversations to achieve the desired results.

Not what I expected.......2007-07-22

I am a hypnotherapist and I was looking for something to compliment that line of thinking. This book was not it. It is targeted at the business world. Perhaps persons in management could use it, but for everyday conversation, it doesn't help.
