            In The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America author Julian Montague has created an elaborate classification system of abandoned shopping carts, accompanied by photographic documentation of actual stray cart sightings. These sightings include bucolically littered locations such as the Niagara River Gorge (where many a cart has been pushed to its untimely death) and mundane settings that look suspiciously like a suburb near you.

            Working in the naturalist's tradition, the photographs depict the diversity of the phenomenon and carry a surprising emotional charge; readers inevitably begin to see these carts as human, at times poignant in their abandoned, decrepit state, hilariously incapacitated, or ingeniously co-opted. The result is at once rigorous and absurd, enabling the layperson to identify and classify their own cart spottings based on the situation in which they were found.

            Received the book last week- funny read and the pictures are amusing for a while...then the "field guide" aspect of the book may be a bit too complicated for a "fun read". It's quite a complicated work-up that the author had contrived, and while impressive- I was using too much brain power while reading something that should be entertaining. I don't think I have enough room left in my brain to store field guide info on shopping carts- even just to make it til the end of this book! But maybe YOU do! :)

            There's no bio for the author, but I hope it helped him get tenure! Designed like a birding guide, it is funny beyond belief. Library of Congress classifies it as an "artistic photography" book, but it has a very droll social anthropology feel about it.

            Though this may be well trod territory, I enjoyed his original take on the shopping cart epidemic. Between his witicisms and his arcane research approach, I found it a hilariously depresing work. One of the best novels I've read in years.

            One of the most complete and well thought out works I have ever encountered. Montague's language coupled with his beautiful photography give the lowly carts individual personalities. Refreshing, for an art piece, it never takes itself too seriously. It will change the way you look at the urban environment, and most importantly it's endlessly fun.

            Flick through this book and many of you might think Julian Montague needs to get a life, roaming round the North Eastern states snapping the death throes of shopping carts, indeed. The book is a bit of fun though and quite cleverly thought out, but maybe the joke wears a bit thin by page 176.

            The five sections explain all you'll need to know to about classifying carts, section two lists Class A: False Strays, Types 1-11 and section three Class B: True Strays, Types 1-22. Each type gets a page with a cool photo and details about what to look for. The longest section is four, titled Selected Specimens, with more than three hundred photos of battered and dead carts in the environment, I think the ones in snow look best and they are categorized according to either Class A or B. It won't surprise you to know that the author toiled for six years creating all this.

            The design and printing of the book is fine and the author takes a pretty good cart photo. The only thing missing, I thought, was some reference to their manufactures, there can't be too many and they most likely all have unique features. This would certainly have added to the thrill of spotting a Class B, Type 11 (train damaged cart) made by A N Other Inc.

            Reading a Paul Schrader screenplay is like reading a book. His writing style is so natural that you don't feel you reading a script but a text that can stand by it's own. This should be required reading for all screenwriters.

            Paul Schrader positions Taxi Driver, American Gigolo, and Light Sleeper as the first three film in a quartet depicting, as he puts it, "...a certain character... who drifts on the edge of urban society, always peeping, looking into the lives of others. He'd like to have a life of his own, but doesn't know how to get one." This character is angry in his 20s (Taxi Driver), narcissistic in his 30s (American Gigolo), and anxious in his 40s (Light Sleeper). In his brief introduction to the collected screenplays for these three films, Schrader announces the existence of a fourth script that will show this "certain character" in his 50s, after which "I'll retire him. It's getting too difficult to finance existential character studies." Schrader finds the genesis for this character in his own strict Calvinist upbringing and subsequent escape to LA, where he says "I was not unlike Travis Bickle: a bundle of tightly wrapped contradictions." He thus wrote the script to Taxi Driver in a chapter format "because I wanted to capture the seeming randomness of Travis' life..." Several years later finds the script for American Gigolo in a conventional format because "I was `in' Hollywood... and wanted scripts that looked like everyone else's." Light Sleeper, being an independent film, was able to return to the chapter format (for better or worse). Both Taxi Driver and Light Sleeper were previously published as single volumes by Faber & Faber, and in the case of Taxi Driver, it's shame to have lost the 14 page dialogue between Schrader and Martin Scorcese that was in that book. Still, it's hard to complain about getting three Schrader scripts in one book, and judging from the "1" in the title, further Schrader collections are forthcoming.

              The best book ever written to turn your D&D characters into vikings is ten years old, and counting. (Stay away from the new Ragnarok book from Avalanche Press). Want new character classes? Here you go. Want a scenario for an up-and-coming Viking? Here you go.

              The only problem is that it is not ready for d20, but the necessary updating will help you get your viking campaign off the ground. Buying "Greenland Saga: The Lost Norse Colony" from Avalanche Press will help you in this regard.

              4 out of 5 stars Best of the AD&D Historical Reference Series.......2000-04-06

              This book is out of print and won't be reprinted, but if you come across a used copy and prefer complete character classes to the character kits so prevalent in most AD&D 2nd ed. sourcebooks, you will want this one. It has a Berserker class and a Runecaster class, both interesting Warrior classes. There is also a half-troll race. AD&D is well suited to a Viking style campaign, and this resource is better presented than any of the other HR series. I doubt you'd have any trouble converting this to either 1st or 3rd edition (though as I'm writing this, 3rd ed. is still a few months away). Just remember, this is a game resource, not a real historical reference.

              This is not a good book. If you want to govern a Viking-esque campaign, I would advise you to get several books on Norse history and literature, but not this God-awful thing. The culture is presented in such a quaint way that unless I knew that the mediocrity was TSR's fault, I could swear that the Vikings led the most tedious lives in the world. The rune magic system is unwieldy and repulsive ( indeed, the only time I remember it being called upon is the fact that it is used by the Ice Linnorm dragons from the First Annual Compendium Appendix). Use your imagination rather than falling into this out-of-stock trap.

              I bought this book from Amazon recently, they have been great about getting it resolved but from what we can tell after having replaced twice the serial number that they mention on the book is not included in any of the books Amazon has in stock.

              The 5th Edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is a slightly pared down, paper-bound version of the authors' hard back college text "Business Law Today, - Text and Summarized Cases, Legal, Ethical, Regulatory and International Environment."

              SUMMARY. The book fills the bill as a "Readers Digest" reference work on general legal principles. But, it is too broad in its treatment to be a reliable resource for comprehensive instructional purposes.

              BASIS. This reviewer is an attorney with over 25 years experience teaching business law. The writer uses the 5th edition of this work, and used the 2d, 3d and 4th editions of the text, as a required instructional resource in accordance with directions from academic administrators.

              POSITIVE ASPECTS.

              - The 5th edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is well written and very readable. The presentation is visually attractive.

              - It includes new material on the up-to-date issues created by e-commerce and cyber law.

              - There are excellent chapter summaries highlighting, in outline form, the major topics covered in the chapter.

              - There are numerous marginal references to Web sites and sources for additional help and information.

              CONCERNS.

              - Content appears to have been sacrificed for aesthetic white space & wide margins. This has been a continuing trend. With each "new edition" there has been less and less textual material. Major legal concepts are given a short treatment of only a sentence or two. However, the interesting and provocative discussion questions at the end of the chapters raise issues which, if they have been addressed by the courts, cannot be correctly resolved based on the information in the text. The result is students have a misconception as to how a principle works or how the majority of courts might rule. When missing information is added by the instructor, student reaction is frustration and distrust of the text.

              -Whole concepts have been deleted from text between editions.(Although, thankfully, the topic of usury, a major concept in business law which was totally deleted from the 4th edition, is again mentioned in the 5th edition.)

              - Case examples too often tend to focus on the more colorful, unusual exception to a controlling legal principle, rather than explaining the rationale for the majority rule or demonstrating how a principle works in daily business situations. The result is often student confusion, since one does not learn a general principle where the only example of the its application is an exceptional situation where the general rule is not apply.

              - Support materials and test bank answers to questions are unreliable. While the answers given in the test bank are legally correct, about 10-15% of the time it is reported the correct answer to a test bank question cannot be extracted from the textual explanation on the cited page in "The Essentials" edition of the text.

              great book however it does match the hardcover verison i ofter had to flip through the book to find that my teachers chapter 7 was my chapter 3 and also some chapters/notes were missing.

              The book is very informative and easy to read although the authors describe old laws/rules in great detail, only to find out that the law has changed and everything that you read is void. Of course they describe the revisions but I found the old information a waste of my time and also annoying.

              All too often construction managers (CM) get caught up in the day-to-day issues that happen on the jobsite. Daniel's book brings one back to the basics: Project Management 101, Safety Considerations, Key Administration Issues, Financial Administration, Project Change Control, Document Control, and Estimating. The sample forms reinforce the use of the appropriate form, which should not be a handwritten piece of paper or an e-mail message (without the appropriate attachment).
              I have read Daniel's book twice and feel the seasoned CM as well as the novice CM can get value from this book. From the attributes of an Exceptional Manager, to the listing of potential Meeting Topics, to Change and Document Control, the book offers some new ideas and some things to remember when planning the next construction project.
