Book Description
An international movement that followed specific geographical-cultural patterns, Conceptual Art built on the legacy of Marcel Duchamp, redefining the institutional and social relationships among production, work and audience in ways which have comprehensively transformed the nature of the art object and forms of artistic practice, both historically and in the present.Investigating and documenting the histories, theories and forms of Conceptual Art, this timely book, including both established writers and a new generation of art historians, shows that Conceptual Art was a broad movement encompassing a range of artistic tendencies. This is the most stimulating account of the movement to date, arguing forcefully for its vitality and potential as well as examining its influence on art today. With essays by Alex Alberro, Stephen Bann, Jon Bird, David Campany, Helen Molesworth, Michael Newman, Peter Osborne, Birgit Pelzer, Desa Philipagesi, Anne Rorimer, Peter Wollen and William Wood.

Must-Read Series.......2006-11-27
On the back page of the cover Viz has the following statement " Epic in scope, and one of the best-selling shojo titles of all time in Japan, Akimi Yoshida put an electric shock into the genre and gained a huge crossover audience through Banana Fish's stripped-down, non-stop style." And boy were they right. Over twenty volumes in length this is an extremely addictive rollacoaster ride. Intense, gritty, violent, action-packed, and suspenseful. This is a manga aimed at older teenagers and adults due to its complex storyline and topics. The term shojo is misused in this book's context, as this is a manga that crosses the border between shojo and shonen and will appeal to guys & girls.
The story is fast-paced and is multi-stranded. Akimi expertly introduces many characters and weaves them in a complex (but never confusing) story. It is 1985 New York - While NYPD is investigating a series of mysterious suicides they escort two Japanese photographers (Eiji and Ibe), who are completing a story about young gangs, to the den of Ash Lynx. Ash is one of the main gang leaders in New York who, due to his looks, brains, and charasmatic personality, is respected and feared. He in turn is under a larger crime syndicate, controlled by Dino Glozine - a mafia like don. When Ash and Dino fall out over a drug sample that falls into Ash's hands, Ash begins an investigation into the name Banana Fish - a term that his sick brother keeps repeating. At the same time one of Ash's gang members tries to take over the gang in a violent raid and Eiji and Ibe find themselves split up and caught up in the following power-struggle.
Many have mentioned that it is a shonen-ai and although it does have an underlying current, this is actually a story of friendship. Imagine the bond of friendship shown in the Shawshank Redemption - this is like that, a self sacrificing and close relationship between Ash and Eiji that grows gradually through the volumes. They form an emotional bond that makes their platonic relationship more close and real than most represented in shonen-ai titles. Akimi also inserts small comic moments to lighten the mood so the story does not get too dark. The drawing style is basic, but the storyline makes up for it. However action sequences are expertly drawn so it almost feels like you are watching a movie. I have read many Manga, but have not been so hooked since I read the Angel Sanctuary series. The closest title I can compare it to is Let Dai, but longer, more complex, more action packed, and a nicer main character. Really recommend as this is one title that stands above the rest.
Banana Fish, Vol. 1.......2006-11-05
I thought that this was a very well written book. The story was very easy to follow and you can get a feel for what the charecters are going through. The nonstop action and all the twists and turns really got you thinking!
Banana Fish, ridiculous key word for mistery, violence and love.......2005-11-06
Ash Links, the hero of this story, is a "poorest" guy who has everything such as money, beauty, power, skill and inteligence.
He is respected by everybody but did not have a friend who shares his saddness.
The drama starts with a key of mistery and and goes to the end without stop.
Whole story is filled with violence and conspiracy at the dark side of Manhattan, but it's a grace story which express a warmful heart of a sensitive innocent boy.
I have read more than 20 times, and could not end without tears every time.
Among 1000s of Manga in Japan, some titles have great stories that can not be fond on even highly applauded novels, and can be understood by real adult.
This is obviously one of such segment.
One thing to my regrett, US version of Banan Fish has two series. Prior one (that I have) terminated at Vol.7 which is almost the half of whole story.
Beware to get continuing series by cheking the design of cover.

Top favorite manga!!!.......2004-12-09
I've been collecting manga since before they ever hit the American shores. As such, I've read a great many crap load of manga. And, yeah, this one's old, but you know, so is Akira and that one kicks ass too! Do not, I repeat, do not look this manga over simply because of the old school style drawings. The story more than makes up for it, and yes, the drawing style does grow on you. Ah! I can not even begin to tell you how great the story is! It's filled with plot twists and all that good stuff! You know, the stuff that makes stories worth being told. Go out and get this gem now! You'll be hooked by the second volume!
Basically, it tells the story of Ash Lynx (not his real name) who is a freakishly smart and very dangerous street punk. He's got what it takes to become so much more though, so he's adopted and raised by Papa Dino (who also uses him as his personal sex toy, the perv!). Ash isn't about to just take it though, and fights back. One night, he comes accross this stranger dieing in an alley way who gives him a vile of some powder and says "Banana Fish." Ash nearly freaks out because unbeknoweth to all, he has secretly been taking care of his brother who was a mental casuallty of the Vietnam war. And the only words that his brother has ever mentioned since his return are "Banana Fish." Now Ash is hot on the trail of figuring out what the hell "Banana Fish" actually is. He'll just have to go up against a mafia boss, his own father, the US police, and travel several states accross and who knows what else just to figure it out. Some of his friends are killed as he's escaping and he swears revenge against their killers. Up for the ride is his brother's vietnam buddy (who is the guy that shot him up after he went mental and killed everyone in their platoon) who is now a reporter; a Japanese photographer's assistant (aka, a cute kid who is slowly growing sweet on him); his Chinese buddy from another rival gang; and others. Every last one of the characters has a back story and thoughts and feelings. You grow to care for them all! So, stop reading this and go get this manga now!! You'll love it!
Don't let the title fool you !.......2004-04-29
Ok well, not only is the book not about a banana and a fish as one might expect, I hardly found the book's outside to depict the inside at all ! Yes it's called a shoujo , however I found it to read more like a shonen.. and although there is a few suggestive things within the first volume (just of a backround history of the main charecter being his boss's play thing) nothing is shown , not even a kiss, so don't worry yourself if the label shoujo is keeping you from reading this well written manga ^-^

A brief bio of Van the Man.......2007-01-23
This is not really an in-depth look at Morrison's career or life. The book itself is about 198 pages - and you don't even get to Astral Weeks until page 95. This is more the Cliffs Notes version of Morrison's career and it ends at roughly 1997's The Healing Game album. Some of the other reviewers said they thought the book was critical of Van and his personality, but this book is nothing compared to Can You Feel the Silence, which has interview after interview detailing Van's rudeness and cruelty to those he came in contact with. Overall, if you're interested in Van's music, this is a good quick read that pretty much only covers the albums and tours he did and doesn't really delve deep into the man's psyche. It also mentions pretty much every album track he ever recorded, which is also something that more biographers should do. Hey, I bought my copy for about 3 bucks and it was worth the read. Give it a try.
An uneven biography: inconsistent and incomplete........2000-06-11
After reading John Collis' VAN MORRISON: INARTICULATE SPEECH OF THE HEART, I'm not sure of the author's intention. In the introduction, Collis claims that he "offers only respect, and simply wants to get amateur psychoanalysis out of the way at the outset." During the course of the next 200 or so pages, however, Collis revels in shameless psycho-babble of the lowest sort while repeatedly criticizing Morrison's notoriously reticent personality.
Another criticism is that Collis seemed to focus a disproportionate amount of his ten chapter biography on Van's years with Them and Van's early solo career. The first seven chapters roughly cover Van's childhood in Belfast up to the release of the WAVELENGTH album in 1978. It is thus left to the remaining three chapters to cover a twenty some odd year era which many fans consider to be Morrison's most consistently rewarding years.
Considering that Van has, on average, released an album every year, Collis' focus on this early era comes at the expense of adequately covering the middle and later periods of Van's career. Indeed, the overall feel of Collis' book is that it was rushed into to print to capitalize on the fact that no Van biographies were available when it was published in 1996.
Fortunately, with the publication of Brian Hinton's CELTIC CROSSROADS, this is no longer the case. Collis does offer some insightful comments on Van's albums, but I would recommend Patrick Humphries' THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF VAN MORRISON to fulfill this task. Overall assessment: inconsistent and incomplete. Not recommended.
Inarticulate Speech of the Heart.......2000-02-14
I do not advise purchasing this book. The author seems focused on Morrison's anti-journalism to the extent that he seems to lose sight of his subject. Since Morrison is difficult (if not impossible) to interview, the author has been left with little more than the music to review. His reviews are passable but his insistence on noting numerous incidents where Morrison is arrogant and/or unappreciative of others turns the book into one long, cynical complaint regarding Van's character. The ending alone, wherein the author quotes Morrison's obscene rant to an audience member who requests a song from him, is depressing enough for me to recommend anyone to pass on this one. Sometimes ignorance IS bliss. Go buy Saint Dominic's Preview and listen for the real story!

That mad genius of the cruciverbal arts has released his second collection of all-original cryptic puzzles. As if his "straight" cryptics aren't challenging enough, Hook throws in twist upon diabolical twist. As a solver you can look forward to a raft of new experiences, many of which will make you laugh with delight--once you get past the desire to strangle the devilish constructor with his own clues. Nimble-minded solvers will find the rewards well worth the moments of temporary frustration. This is some exceedingly clever stuff, great fun and full of the expected Henry Hook wit.
Book Description
Cryptic crosswords are the ultimate challenge for American puzzlers. The forty-five never-before-published cryptic crosswords in
Volume 3 are as tough as they come -- just the way cryptic fans like them.
Customer Reviews:
Get hooked.......2002-08-12
Henry Hook is one of the most devious and creative cryptic constructors in the world, and these collections show that he can be among the most prolific, too. Although there are some puzzles here that are pleasantly solvable, there are some that will challenge even the most jaded cryptic aficionado. And Hook's trickery depends on forcing solvers to look at words and letters in new ways, but his clues always play fair -- no mismatch of tense or parts of speech, no extraneous words, and no words used twice (once in the definition and once in the wordplay) -- errors that some other constructors, even very well-regarded ones, allow themselves with regularity.
Great books.......2002-01-05
I just discovered Henry Hook after many years of doing the Harper's Puzzle by Richard Maltby, Jr. These are excellent cryptics, and great fun to do. If you like the Harper's puzzle you will love these. Very very hard.
Hook is the best!.......2001-07-06
The most varied and interesting of cryptic puzzlers, Hook surpasses himself in this last edition. But when will we see a new one?
Cryptics for the American solver.......2001-07-01
These cryptics are excellent for the solver who does not dwell in the abstruse depths of the English language. The structural ingenuity is very good, and the "tricks" are usually quite fair. The whole series of Henry Hook' cryptics is to be recommended -- but not for beginners.
Stilled Hooked.......1999-06-22
Henry Hook has finally released Volume 4 in his series of maddeningly difficulty cryptic puzzles. Like previous volumes in the series, the book consists of 45 variety styles crosswords and acrostics including repeated varities from past volumes (Crypto-Cipher, All Even, 7s and 9s).
One notable point is the use of some adult-oriented slang in a few points throughout the book. Being like-minded, I actually enjoyed this and felt it made the puzzles a little more contemporary. But as it says on the back, it's not for the squeamish.
Book Description
Written by a lawyer for lawyers, Deborah Arron's book is a virtual encyclopedia for lawyers in transition, covering such topics as how to conduct a self-assessment and transferrable skills analysis, how to detect and prepare for layoff, how to establish a transitional financial plan, how to market your special talents, how to work with career consultants and headhunters, how to decide whether to stay in law or leave, how to avoid job-interview hell, how to handle compensation negotiations that work in your favor.
Customer Reviews:
useless for anyone who needs help.......2007-09-07
My problem with all these books that are supposed to help us lawyers find a job or a new career is that they assume we are already successful lawyers. Most of the advice offered is for people who've been practicing for years and therefore have an established network of contacts. The advice for those without experience in the law is geared toward those who already had another career prior to law and suggests that job seekers focus on that career.
This book, all the other "how lawyers can find job" books, and my useless Career Services Office simply assume that all job seekers have parents who are partners in law firms, great networks, and years of related experience.
Even the one of the good reviews given on this site is from someone who has years of experience. Duh! The book promises that it can help anyone at any level of their career. It fails.
What an EXPERIENCED lawyer can do.......2007-02-05
I'm very disappointed in this book. As a recent law school grad WITHOUT years of experience, I was looking for ALTERNATIVES to practicing law at all!! Instead, this book wasted my time and money by assuming I would have the legal work experience to make me attractive to other professions or give me the knowledge to begin some business of my own.
All I really learned was what I already knew was available as an alternative -- teach!
Phoey!! What a waste of my money and time.
Good Starting Point.......2006-09-10
So many lawyers feel burned out, exhausted and stressed--and they don't where to turn next. This book is an easy and anonymous next step for lawyers exploring career change solutions.
Some of the other reviewers raised valid criticisms; parts of the book are very general indeed. However, for many lawyers, it's the ideal starting point for analyzing what they really want to do with their life.
Many lawyers I know have enjoyed this book's exercises for mapping out an ideal job and analyzing transferable skills. They also like the appendix listing jobs in and around the law; it's good for brainstorming possibilities.
As a lawyer coach, I particularly appreciate the chapter dealing with lawyers' finances. Far too many attorneys have no realistic handle on their spending--either personal or professional. Many don't know how much money they REALLY NEED to live on. A financial analysis and budget are critical parts of any job change.
The author peppered the book with links to websites listing jobs, salaries and benefits, and other job-hunting tips. The book functions well as intended: as a good starting point for lawyers contemplating career change.
This book was overly simplistic and had little good advice........2003-12-05
I could sum this book up in eight words:
So you didn't like law school? Try teaching.
There I just saved you the time of ordering and reading it. This book was a typical one of those books you see in a public library with really basic common sense ideas and little insight.
WHAT ARE THESE OTHER REVIEWERS TALKING ABOUT?.......2003-10-27
I cannot believe the criticism of this book. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR LAWYERS WHO ARE HAPPY IN THEIR WORK AND WHO HAVE FOUND THEIR NICHE.
THE THRUST OF THE BOOK IS TO ASSIST LAWYERS WHO HAVE EITHER GROWN DISILLUSIONED WITH THE PRESSURES OF LEGAL PRACTICE OR WHO HAVE DECIDED THAT THEY WISH TO APPLY THEIR SKILLS IN ANOTHER ARENA.
YOU CANNOT READ THIS BOOK ONCE AND EXPECT TO APPLY THE PRINCIPLES WITHIN A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS. This is a book for long term change and not for the impatient, which is a quality I suspect some of the negative reviewers have demonstrated.
THIS BOOK HAS HELPED ME ENORMOUSLY THROUGH A DIFFICULT CAREER CHANGE. WITHOUT THIS BOOK I WOULD NOT HAVE COPED BECAUSE THE STRATEGIES AND INFORMATION CONTAINED IN IT TAKE TIME TO PUT INTO PRACTICE. IF YOU TAKE A LONG TERM VIEW, IMPLEMENT THE IDEAS AND REGULARLY REFER TO THE BOOK WHEN REVIEWING YOUR PROGRESS THEN THIS BOOK IS INDISPENSIBLE.
The author has pinpointed with great accuracy the level of discontent in some quarters of the profession. Hey with the blame culture, billable hours, risk management, and so on, it is important that alternative career options be identified.
These issues are not often discussed among professionals and can make for uncomfortable reading. This does not mean that they should be swept under the carpet and ignored.
The techniques start with self assessment and identification of the unbelievable skills that we have acquired as Lawyers. Nowhere does the author criticise the profession or fellow professionals.
Indeed she gives people positive strategies for reviewing the options available, making choices and taking action steps.
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A CAREER CHANGE WITHIN OR OUT OF THE PROFESSION, THIS IS THE LEADING BOOK AND AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE.
