Book Description
Bio art is a new art form that has emerged from the cultural impact and increasing accessibility of contemporary biotechnology. Signs of Life is the first book to focus exclusively on art that uses biotechnology as its medium, defining and discussing the theoretical and historical implications of bio art and offering examples of work by prominent artists.
Bio art manipulates the processes of life; in its most radical form, it invents or transforms living organisms. It is not representational; bio art is in vivo. (A celebrated example is Eduardo Kac's own GFP Bunny, centered on "Alba," the transgenic fluorescent green rabbit.) The creations of bio art become a part of evolution and, provided they are capable of reproduction, can last as long as life exists on earth. Thus, bio art raises unprecedented questions about the future of life, evolution, society, and art.
The contributors to Signs of Life articulate the critical theory of bio art and document its fundamental works. The writers--who include such prominent scholars as Barbara Stafford, Eugene Thacker, and Dorothy Nelkin--consider the culture and aesthetics of biotechnology, the ethical and philosophical aspects of bio art, and biology in art history. The section devoted to artworks and artists includes George Gessert's Why I Breed Plants, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr's Semi-Living Art, Marc Quinn's Genomic Portrait, and Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey's Chlorophyll.

Book Description
The interest in old electric fans has skyrocketed in the last five years. In 1994, an 1887 Crocker/Curtis fan brought $12,000 at an auction; several fans have since sold for over $15,000! Antiques dealers, auctioneers, and collectors from all over the country have been unable to find information on these fans - there has been no price guide available. Plus there are many reproductions on the market that are worthless and confusing to the collector. This book is the answer to the great demand for an accurate and complete resource for dating and pricing electric fans. Each of the 330 fans in this well-researched book is dated, sized, and given a thorough range of prices based on six categories of condition. Plus there are dozens of intriguing illustrations, catalog ads, and historical information for various companies. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: John Witt is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up loving old electric fans. He began collecting when he was ten years old. He casually collected fans until around the age of 25 and became a member of the American Fan Collectors Association. In 1991 he published his first book on electric desk fans and has written several articles on the subject for several antique journals. He is a librarian by trade and a graduate of four universities. REVIEW: This book is a guide of general information concerning desk fans. It does not cover ceiling or non-mechanical fans. It is designed to establish some parameters within the field of desk fan collecting. Fan type, size of blades, date, company, and collector value are given for each fan shown.

Not what I expected.......2003-01-29
Don't buy this book expecting to learn all about fan collecting. There is virtually no introductory information other than how old fans are graded. Lot's of detail about certain brands (Westinghouse, Emerson and GE) but not much on other manufacturers. Also, level of detail very inconsistent - almost seems like pages are missing. Little black and white photos also leave a lot to be desired. Probably a good reference to have, but didn't really fit my need.
VERY VERY USEFUL FOR THE COLLECTOR!.......2002-12-31
This is a very good book, you will never find all you need in one place, but this is a good start -- Black and White pictures -- no big deal cuz most old fans were all black anyway!
Highly recommended

Outdated but good to look at.......2007-01-24
This is persented as a collector's price guide, so he can know the value of his Lucille Ball collection. It has rare pictures of her and is a must for any Lucy fan. The prices are outdated however and there are too few stories throughout the book. The book might feel to some as too much Lucy and not enough pictures of others who worked with her.
Terrific Lucy Memorabilia Book.......2002-06-22
Let me start with the complaints. The prices that the items have designated to them are very off. You can easliy go to a flea market or an online auction and get most of the things at least 25% cheaper than they are listed as being worth in here. Maybe the prices are so high because the guy never planned to update it, but an update is what the book needs. After the 50th Anniversary of I Love Lucy there was a ton of stuff released. In all honesty a For The Love of Lucy Pt.2 book could be made, after all the book is 7 or 8 years old. Now moving on to the good stuff about the book. This book includes so many Lucy items that were made available from early on in her carrer to after her death that this book would be a great conversational piece for when you have any company. Each page is filled with stuff from cards and comic books, to dolls. This book is perfect for any Lucy fan who is or isnt collecting Lucy stuff. Overall this book is great, but updating it would be nice.
Lucy Lovers Will Love This!.......2001-06-06
Talk about complete! "For the Love of Lucy" is the ultimate book for fans and collectors of "Lucy" memorabilia. Filled with beautiful color and black & white pictures, along with helpful text and value estimates, this compendium will keep any fan busy for hours. I'm not a collector, but I found it thrilling to sift through all the pages and see the many different things out there. This would be a great birthday or Christmas gift for any Lucy lover you know.
wymans gem.......2000-04-24
Ric's does a beautiful job on this book. I get the feeling he really loves Lucy! Ric is a true fan. The photos and information on Lucy are outstanding!
Gorgeous to Look at!!!.......1999-07-30
This book is full of photos of beautiful collectibles on Lucy - magazines, posters, toys, all sorts of memorabilia. It is wonderful to the Lucy fan to use a something of a check list. The one flaw is the absolutely ridiculous prices Wyman says some of these things are worth. I recently bought the 40s picture frame photo he says is worth $75 for $4! Many times I have paid less than a third the price he says these things go for. Wonder if he jacked up the prices expecting they would eventually fetch these rates in years to come. Still, this is a gorgeous book and he certainly does have an outstanding collection on Lucy.

Predictable and dull.......2007-06-05
Really baffled as to what all the fuss about. The underlying concept is great: Batman in the 19th century versus Jack the Ripper. This really should work; Batman fits in perfectly into a typical dark, squalid Victorian-era city with its Gothic architecture. Unfortunately the execution is poor; the story lacks any real depth or excitement and the identity of the Ripper is incredibly obvious. It's all over too quickly, and I think that's the problem. For this experiment to work, to create a believeable alternate world for Batman as well as strong characterisation and plot development, it really needs to be much longer.
Elseworlds Begins.......2006-08-05
Released in 1989, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was unofficially the first DC Elseworlds book. DC would go on to use the Elseworlds banner to cast their popular characters in alternate histories, worlds, etc.
Gotham by Gaslight finds Bruce Wayne donning the Batman costume in the late 1800's. Batman's arrival in Gotham City comes just as another dark figure makes his Gotham debut - notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper! Can an inexperienced Batman stop an elusive murderer that many people believe is Batman himself?
The novelty of the concept alone makes Gotham by Gaslight a fun read, and writer Brian Augustyn does an admirable job capturing the overall feel of the era. Mike Mignola's artwork is excellent as usual. The future Hellboy creator was the perfect choice for such a dark tale, though by having someone else ink his work - even someone as talented as P. Craig Russell - it takes away from that bold light and dark contrasting style Mignola does so well. Still, it's hard to argue with the results. Gotham by Gaslight is a thoroughly enjoyable Batman tale, and is noteworthy for launching the Elseworlds line.
PS - Am I alone in thinking Mignola's version of Jim Gordon looks a lot like Teddy Roosevelt?
The Bat Lives On!!.......2004-12-06
This is a great read for any fan of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! The Bat kicks total[...]! I Especially love the cameo of The Joker! Read it,
you'll love it!
elseworlds as it's best!.......2002-12-04
Alternative history books - "proper" or comic - start with The question - "What if?" In this case, what if Bruce Wayne happen to live in "innocent" Victorian times - than he could easily become a friend and an apprentice of Sigmund Freud and visit London at the hight of Ripper crimes...
It seems that bat mythos is as reach and as flexible as the Greek ones - you can tell them again and again in different decor, use different cast - and have the same impact!
Beutifully paced story, darkly magnificent art - and horror grandmaster Robert Bloch as an intro writer - what can be better?
Definitely worth hunting for.
A great Batman tale.......1999-09-16
I was nothing but impressed by this book. The artwork was great, & the story really was top notch. The design for the 1880's Batman costume was extremely cool. Definately a must-read for fans of the Bat & for any comic fans.

Hilarious if you can loosen up enough to enjoy it!.......2007-08-15
This book was hilarious and kept me reading and laughing. You will love this book if you can keep in mind that by playing up the tired old stereotypes, Cohn pokes fun at gays and lesbians in a smart and witty "inside the crowd" kind of way. This book isn't made to be representative of the gay community to outsiders who need to understand the stereotypes aren't real, it's great comedy that you'll find yourself nodding to every once in a while saying "my god, I KNOW someone who is ACTUALLY like that!" I'd recommend it as well as "Who's Cares if It's A Choice" to any person without "Irony deficiency".
Enraging with its CONSTANT stereotypes.......2005-12-02
You'd think that by the mid 1990s, the apex of lesbian chic, Meryl Cohn would have realized that not all lesbians are walking stereotypes (or gay men either), but she obviously hasn't. In her view, ALL lesbians are baby-worshiping, butch/femme obsessed drones who don't have fun or pay any attention to fashion (oh, except for those stupid femmes who are supposedly all just dying to date butches, who are considered by Cohn to be the popular kids of lesbian society as long as they are man enough), all eat vegetarian, and are basically politically correct robots "in recovery" for whom fun is un-pc. Gay men, on the other hand, are glamorous, fashionable epicures who love sex, drugs, and interior decorating. Basically, this book is every single liberal straight person's stereotypes of gays vs. lesbians. Obviously the writer doesn't get out much, or maybe she only knows people who fall into these stereotypes. As a fashionable, partying, beauty-loving lesbian who could care less about monogamy, "recovery", babies and turkey basters, I was appalled. Her book should have been called "Butch and Femme and Baby Makes Three for Lesbians, and Fashion and Fun for Fags, AKA Women are Boring and Men (and Butches) are cool: A Guide To Lame Gay Life".
A great read!.......2000-05-21
I'm just wrapping up "Do What I Say" and I've enjoyed it tremendously. Though I wasn't familiar with Cohn's newspaper columns, I came across this book and thought it might be worth a laugh. That it certainly is, but "Do What I Say" is also one of those rare books that manages to be hilarious, insightful, and hugely entertaining all at once. I highly recommend this to anyone gay, lesbian, or gay-friendly looking for a laugh and some pretty sensible advice! Let's see more books from Meryl Cohn.
Funniest look at gay and lesbian life ever written........1997-12-18
This book is a witty and engaging look at life in the 90's from a gay and lesbian perspective. Meryl Cohn tells us how to handle all sorts of situations with her unique blend of compassion and distain for the modern tribulations of every-queer.
A must read for straight and gay alike.

Product Description
Recognized as a master of Italian and world cinema, Vittorio De Sica is considered one of the major proponents of neorealism, an Italian movement that forever altered the content and style of the cinema worldwide. This work covers De Sica's entire career as a stage and screen actor, director, and screenwriter. It begins with a chronology of his life and work. A lengthy essay discusses biographical and career information in detail. Special attention is given to the years following the war when De Sica directed Shoeshine, Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, and Umberto D—films that made him famous. Succeeding sections offer stage acting credits, screen acting credits, a filmography of De Sica's directorial work, selected credits related to De Sica's neorealism films, and a filmography of De Sica's work as a screenwriter. Two interviews with the master provide additional insights. A bibliography of works by and about De Sica in the English language complete the work.

Book Description
In this new and revised edition of the landmark book High-Impact Consulting, Robert H. Schaffer reveals how senior managers unwittingly collude with their consultants to perpetuate the great waste inherent in "the five fatal flaws of conventional consulting." Drawing on his own work with companies— Motorola, Rio Tinto, IBM, General Reinsurance Corporation, The World Bank, and other successful organizations— Schaffer offers a field-tested approach to working with consultants that has proven to get results. He identifies the key elements of an effective project design?particularly that project objectives are defined in terms of client results rather than just consultant deliverables. The process enables clients to be certain that the work is carried out in ways that ensure success.
Customer Reviews:
CATALYTIC CONSULTING vs 'SHAKE 'N BAKE'.......2007-10-04
Robert Schaffer has an axe to grind. He detests wishy-washy, milk-and-water, wet-piece-of-string consultants who drip through client corporations leaving a trail of vague, make-more-work clutter while they mop up billings by-the-hour .
Like another consulting giant Peter Drucker The Effective Executive: The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things Done (Harperbusiness Essentials) Schaffer wants to leave a trail of the right things done right.
Schaffer is also anchored in a commitment to a consulting 'process' of his very own, but much in the same camp as Peter Block
The Answer to How Is Yes: Acting on What Matters but with a very different style and a different emphasis.
Finally, Schaffer between the lines, exudes A Way of Being. He is a Rogerian consultant and he is committed to consulting as a 'process' not as a tool-bag to be dished out to clients like band-aids.
The majority of 21st Century consultants are spilled out of giant client anthill corporations like IBM in droves armed with Six-Sigma, Powerpoints, Spreadsheets, STATISTICA software and other off-the-shelf flash-and-dash tools. They will never understand nor aspire after being a consultant in the way that Schaffer, Rogers, Block or Drucker have been...and clients are the poorer because of this.
Schaffer is treading the edge of the consulting curve when he proposes that clients and consultants can 'work' together. Our experience at One Big Idea Consulting Limited NZ is that only a very small minority of exceptionally creative and committed consultants like Drucker, Rogers, Block and Schaffer himself can 'work together' with a tiny minority of enlightened clients - those few who have the raw courage and the committment to 'process' consulting vs, tool-box consultations.
These few will be catalytic! But most of the clients will get by with shake-and-bake consulting that is billed by the hour, not by the results.
Good But Better Books Exist.......2007-09-08
This is a good book but there are better books on the market that cover the same subject in more detail.
ONE BIG IDEA REVISED AND UPDATED = ONE BIG IDEA REFRESHED.......2007-08-08
History has shown over and over again 'fortune favours he who is prepared'.
Robert Schaffer keeps revising and tough-testing his One Big Idea that is as fresh today in 2007, as it was in 1964 when he lit a slow-burning fuse under the international consulting profession inThe Breakthrough Strategy. Since then Rapid Results!: How 100-Day Projects Build the Capacity for Large-Scale Change has continued to seed the profession with fresh insight...and practical consulting techniques.
However, we at One Big Idea Consulting Limited NZ still cherish Schaffer for his original breakthrough insight - consulting is all about helping the client to get himself and his organisation - as a whole - 'ready' to make the needed changes that spring from the consulting process itself.
Peters made it sound cleverThe Pursuit of Wow! decades later turning common-sense 'ready steady go' Schaffer consulting
back to front and upside-down and inside-out.
Anyone who has tried the chaotic Peters' process has retreated in tatters to the sanity of Schaffer with solid success.
'Wow' and 'Pow!' and 'Now Now Now!'soon fizzles out to a Dilbertian 'Now?'
'Readiness' is the key to consulting success - not dazzling the client with consulting cleverness and enter-training slogans and sound bites, and the next generation of MBA change-agents wielding six sigmas as a magic mantra, need to read Schaffer throughout his writings avalable at http://www.rhsa.com/publications/ to get their heads around his One Big Idea.
i.e. Before making a move to change anything, make absolutely certain that the client organisation is 'ready' for the challenges that will soon face them down if they are un-prepared. This is not procrastination runing endless research and committee deliberations. It is plain and simple sanity!Execution Plain and Simple: Twelve Steps to Achieving Any Goal on Time and On Budget
We have learned that 'The longest way round the client's capacity for delay, is very often the shortest way home to solid action that takes and sticks. More haste is less speed.
Great book for consultants.......2006-11-10
This book was required reading for one of my university courses. The book is chock full of useful information that will help you give your clients what they paid for - excellent results!
If you are wondering what this book is really all about, another title the author could have used is Results Driven Consulting. The author doesnt advocate the typical consulting model, which consists of analyzing a situation and giving recommendations. Instead, it suggests that the consultant should stick around, and help implement those recommendations to make sure the client is fully satisfied (and will call you back for future engagements). Overall, an excellent and informative book. The writing is a little dry and time consuming, but well worth the effort!
High-Impact Advice.......2006-07-24
This is a high quality book that provides excellent advice to managers and consultants. The author explains the critical factors for an effective design of projects, especially the need to define project objectives in terms of client results instead of merely consultant deliverables. Schaffer identifies five serious flaws that he says low-yielding consultants suffer from of coming up with solutions with no regard on the capacity of the client to implement them.
This is a must read for managers of companies that may need to employ consultants. These managers will be able to demand high value from the consultants. It is also very critical for practising and aspiring consultants as they can learn how they can add value to their clients by providing new methods or solutions to their clients, and ensure that clients achieve measurable improvement arising from the solutions they provide and finally ensure that the client is able to sustain the improvement in future. Schaffer presents useful and practical recommendations directed at both the consultant and client to ensure a win-win relationship.
The book has several case studies and tips that help reinforce the concepts that he is propagating. This is a well written book that is easy to follow. The book is a useful addition to my library.
