Book Description
The Skira Dictionary of Modern Decorative Arts spans, under nearly one thousand headings, a period defined by two crucial events in the intricate history of the transition from artisanal production of the decorative arts to industrial design: the London World Fair, that opened in 1851 in Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace, and the E42, designed for Rome and that, owing to the Second World War, was never carried out. Practically a century of history and of an artistic evolution that, arisen from the agelong, consummate technical, material and creative legacy of the European art craftsmanship of the preceding centuries, also took into account industrial production and the radical changes of society and taste that occurred in Europe and the United States between the second half of the nineteenth century and the 1950's
The Dictionary, enhanced by over three hundred illustrations, provides information, critical commentaries, historical data about artists, designers, manufactories, laboratories, techniques and materials connected with glass and crystal, silverware and jewellery, processed metals, textiles and furnishings, pottery and porcelain, furniture, offering an appendix featuring a concise bibliography raisonné and a repertory of trademarks, related to pottery production, of of signatures and trademarks of artists working in the various fields. Perusual of the individual headings and the illustrations allows to review the history and the evolution of the decorative arts in Europe and the Unites States from Biedermeier to the eclectic and historicist taste, from international modernism, with its different Secessions and liberty versions, to art deco, from Novecento style up to industrial design.

As good as it gets in the world of Guatemalan textiles.......2000-05-14
This book, written by the curator of western hemisphere textiles at the Textile Museum in Washington DC, serves as a primer of Guatemalan textile traditions. The photographs are high quality, including some vintage photographs from Guatemalan villages. But this is not just a pretty picture book. The author traces the evolution of textile traditions in a number of villages over the last century. The material is meticulously researched and referenced. The book demonstrates an intimate knowledge of the Guatemalan textiles in collections in the US, but might have been enhanced by field work and examination of textiles still in use today in many Guatemalan villages. This book serves as the standard for other scholars working in the field.
Book Description
Everything that has happenedor ever will happencan be found in the Book of Destiny, brother to the Sandman. The information contained on even a single page would be priceless, if mortals ever had the chance to see it. Now, an enigmatic stranger offers salvation to a lonely young woman in a plague-ravaged community when he announces that he has a page from the Book of Destiny. Suggested for mature readers.

Disappointing Destiny.......2004-09-29
There are people that do Neil Gaiman's world well (Mike Carey and Jill Thompson are two that come quickly to mind). Alisa Kwitney, a former editor at Vertigo attempts to tell the story of our near-future where the bubonic plague has struck and killed off most of the world's population a la Stephen King's "The Stand." Narrated by Ruth, Kwitney's stand-in, the story wants to be a meditation on what it is like to live simply because one is alive. Into this mix (and to justify the comic) appears a "mysterious stranger" who has a book that contains a stolen page from Destiny's book. How the page was stolen, how it pertains to the plague and the previous plagues through the centuries, plus the random appearances of Destiny of the Endless become the bulk of this bulky sloppy book. There is a story in here SOMEWHERE, but Kwitney seems to confuse her shallows with her depths with characters who are obvious archetypes. We've seen this story before, better written, with more clarity and skill than Kwitney delivers. The fact of her familiarity through her editing work on (or near) the Vertigo books DOESN'T make her writer of greater insight into the Sandman's world, which is really why anyone would pick this book up in the first place. For a read on a character that steps out and stands alone without losing any of the magic of the world of Sandman and the Endless, try "The Furies," which follows the story of Lyta Hall, the distraught former mother and destructor of the Sandman. That story is handled with grace, creating a new and unique story which doesn't attempt to force the history of another writer's book into its own. Ultimately, "Destiny: A Chronicle of Deaths Foretold" acts as a crass attempt to capitalize on the Vertigo character. In a better writer's hands, who knows? But in Kwitney's: you're destined to be disappointed.
A Fine Story.......2000-04-22
While this collection seemed to skimp on details in a few places, it was a nice read for someone still wanting more Sandman stories. However, the art is very nice, and appropriate for such a dark tale.
a collection of DC's three-part prestige mini series.......2000-04-06
Written by Alisa Kwitney, this book is beautifully painted by, Kent Williams, the cover art and framing sequence artist, Michael Zulli in part one, Scott Hampton in part two and Revecca Guay in part three. This time, Kent renders his works mainly with pencils and watercolor washes.

More George.......2003-03-14
The author's name speaks for itself, HAYDUKE! Not to wear out an old cliché, but George Hayduke is THE MASTER of revenge techniques. His books are the standard that all other revenge type books are measured against. As usual Mr. Hayduke gleefully covers revenge tactics on everything from nasty ex-spouses, ex-lovers and ex-bosses, to landlords, corporations, Government red tape and everyone/everything else under the sun. George Hayduke is original, funny, and so clever that you can't help but love him (as long as you aren't on his bad side... you've never seen ME write up a bad review on his books or tapes have you? : )
More from the MASTER........2000-07-10
Still more tips and techniques from the absolute master of revenge. George Hayduke gives further insight for the rest of us "Haydukers" on the fine art of revenge. I have read many of George's books and know that this man is the ultimate resource for those who have been wronged, used or generally hurt by another. Don't believe the false statements that this book isn't worth it. It is worth every penny. I'm glad to have it among my collection of Hayduke's works. Even if you're not planning revenge, it's often just hilarious reading!

Absolute Garbage.......2000-05-05
I bought this book because of the review that was listed showing it to be a very good purchase. Wow was that review wrong...Anyone who has ever read a good revenge book can tell that this book is not worth the paper or bindings holding it together; very impractical and filled with garbage stories that either read bad or simply make no sense at all. I could put a better book together than this one in 10 minutes and it would have more revenge tactics than this garbage book lists...I want my money back...make sure you keep yours and buy a different book
Disappointing.......2000-03-30
An outdated work, neither very useful nor entertaining. Whatever relevance this book might have had when it was published 18 years ago has long since passed. Don't waste your money.

Praise for IT Portfolio Management Step-by-Step
"Bryan Maizlish and Robert Handler bring their deep experience in IT 'value realization' to one of the most absent of all IT management practices—portfolio management. They capture the essence of universally proven investment practices and apply them to the most difficult of challenges—returning high strategic and dollar payoffs from an enterprise's IT department. The reader will find many new and rewarding insights to making their IT investments finally return market leading results."

"IT Portfolio Management describes in great detail the critical aspects, know-how, practical examples, key insights, and best practices to improve operational efficiency, corporate agility, and business competitiveness. It eloquently illustrates the methods of building and integrating a portfolio of IT investments to ensure the realization of maximum value and benefit, and to fully leverage the value of all IT assets. Whether you are getting started or building on your initial success in IT portfolio management, this book will provide you information on how to build and implement an effective IT portfolio management strategy."
—David Mitchell, President and CEO, webMethods, Inc.

Maizlish and Handler have the depth of experience, knowledge, and insight needed to tackle the challenges and opportunities companies face in optimizing their IT investment portfolios. This is an exceptionally important book for executive leadership and IT business managers, especially those wanting to build a process-managed enterprise."
—Peter Fingar, Executive Partner Greystone Group, coauthor of The Real-Time Enterprise and Business Process Management (BPM): The Third Wave

—Richard "Max" Maksimoski, Senior Director R&D, The Scotts Company
"This book provides an excellent framework and real-world based approach for implementing IT portfolio management. It is a must-read for every CIO staff considering how to strategically and operationally impact their company's bottom line."

Customer Reviews:
Essential for all managers.......2006-02-02
There is absolutely no doubt that all enterprises, small or large, are completely reliant technology to operate. Companies have aggressively built and deployed IT solutions. My experience has been that most executives kind of treat this as a black box. They understand that there are major benefits to deploying various IT solutions (and they are right), but they don't really understand the how and the why. This is where this book comes in. I think that it is essential reading for executives, particularly those who are not strong in IT. Executives need to really understand the hard issues related to managing their IT portfolio -- how should they manage their IT portfolios. This book provides an excellent road map. It will show you how to evaluate your IT portfolio in a concise and easy-to-read manner. I'm big into charts and checklists and this book provides them. With a bewildering array of IT options and the difficult task of sorting and prioritizing, this book will serve as an essential guide.
Required reading for IT management.......2005-09-23
Paradigm shift is an overused term, but if there is a field in need of one, it is enterprise IT management. IT Portfolio Management presents the first detailed overview of an emerging, business-focused approach for managing all things IT.
If you only buy and read one book on IT management this year, it should be this one. The introductory summation of just how bad things generally are in enterprise IT is worth the price alone.
IT portfolio management ultimately presents the challenging idea of an overall, end to end value chain of IT investments, from initial idea inception through prioritization, delivery, management, optimization, and retirement. Handler and Maizlish propose the formal management of Discovery, Project, and Asset portfolios; their discussion of the Asset portfolio is a groundbreaking examination of issues that too many IT organizations are just beginning to face up to.
This well written book has detailed case studies from Cisco, In-Q-Tel, and Excel Energy, and much specific guidance in the form of checklists, charts, tables, and more.
I recently saw a figure of $800 billion per year for the combined expenditure on IT by US corporations. Given the massive size of this capital investment, it is very surprising how few substantive books there are written on its general issues. Technical publishing usually produces detailed reference guides that are soon obsolete; this book (like the recent _IT Governance_ by Weill and Ross) is in the smaller category of works that discuss more general issues of large scale IT management, and should have staying power far beyond the latest .Net tome.
If you are in IT management or concerned with the architecture of IT enablement systems - buy it. Now!
