Julian Schnabel owns a 10-bedroom Stanford White spread in Montauk, and Ross Bleckner has settled into Truman Capote's Sagaponack saltbox. The Hamptons have come a long way since Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner borrowed $5,000 from Peggy Guggenheim to pay for an unheated farmhouse in Springs, but one thing hasn't changed: the East End's allure to America's leading artists. In Studios by the Sea, Vanity Fair correspondent Bob Colacello and photographer Jonathan Becker go inside the renovated barns, split-shingled cottages, and minimalist mansions of the modern-day artist colony that is Long Island's East End.
Larry Rivers, John Chamberlain, April Gornik, Chuck Close, and David Salle are among the 40 prominent painters and sculptors featured in this gossipy, anecdotal book, full of luscious, sunlight-infused images.
Looking at a world through a mind distorted by too many controlled substances, Jones shines his twisted light on the dark corners of America. With its original political satire, Open Letters to George W. Bush gives the reader a distorted view of political reality as Jones urges the president to:
Allow death to find its natural ebb and flow without medical intervention
From Christianity to colons and everything in between, Jones provides a dark yet humorous series of letters that will entertain those both for and against W.

Belacqua Jones is addictive..........2007-08-22
Belacqua Jones, the drug addled persona in the drivers seat of this endeavor makes more sense than anyone could ever imagine.
These letters will have you cringing, crying, gasping, screaming, stomping your feet and laughing out loud!
The book holds no punches. Belacqua, with a bi-partisan tongue and gale force satirical wit is a must have for any serious political junkie.
BEST CRITIC OF GWB - EVER!!!.......2006-08-23
Belacqua (Case) says what the best critics of GWBushCo say -
but he does it SUCCINCTLY - DAILY and with HUMOR. It simply does not getany better!!!
Tongue-in-cheek satire.......2006-06-06
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (6/06)
This book is a tongue-in-cheek satire of government and big business, told through a series of letters to President Bush from a fictional character called Belacqua Jones, described by the author as a meth-addicted psychopath, half a bubble off plumb.
Belacqua Jones is an ardent admirer of George W. Bush and possesses keen insight into the political machine. That insight is clearly evident in this book as Jones comments on every aspect of Bush's presidency and offers invaluable advice to further his political career. Some of Jones' suggestions: Enhance the value of death. If someone has an illness such as cancer, offer painkillers rather than medicine to fight the disease. Morphine is much cheaper than chemotherapy. Keep the rest of the world impoverished so that the US can maintain its standard of living. Shore up Social Security by making cigarette smoking mandatory for children. If he wishes to eliminate Social Security, he can just abolish retirement. Problem solved. The big corporations can take back all the money they put into the 401 (k)s and give enormous bonuses to the top executives as they so richly deserve.
Jones is also looking out for George's interests, such as warning him about the Ashlee Simpson debacle. It takes an astute player to recognize the potential harm Simpson could do the political machine.
At times Jones shows astonishing vision, such as urging the canonization of Judas Iscariot by the Vatican. How could anyone, except a meth-addicted psychopath, half a bubble off plumb, realize that Judas was a victim, actually a sacrifice to the greater good?
Although I don't agree with everything Case Wagenvoord writes, I found that I was in agreement with much more of what he has written than I anticipated. A brilliant, satirical book, I would urge everyone to sit down and browse through this work. Since the book is a series of letters, in no particular order, you can jump around, picking the chapter headings that intrigue you. Some of my favorites...The Iron Colon, Tree-Huggers, The Benefits of Torture, God Bless the Democrats, Stoning and Human Sacrifice.
Belacqua is a genius.......2005-10-22
Belacqua is one of very few people who can immediately see the whole story, the bigger picture, the future ramifications, the subtleties obscured by BS. I think he's possibly reached a level of intuitive evolution never before realized.
Letters to W will make you look at the world in a whole new way and you'll wonder, how could you have been so blind before?

Very Informative.......2007-07-27
I learned more from this book than I did from the course I took at an online college. I could have saved the $2,000 and taught myself.
Lives Up To Its Claim.......2007-05-14
The book presents Dreamweaver and Flash in a way that makes the programs easier to learn than from other books. It becomes a great reference to easily find specific tasks you have forgotten later. Master Visually Books
are teriffic for learning a new program like Photoshop also.
Simplicity ruled with the purchase of this book.......2006-08-24
I am a total novice to Dreamweaver - only my desire to learn exceeded my knowledge. Having read many previous books on the subject I was becoming quite depressed at getting nowhere. I found this book informative where I needed it to be, easy to follow and the only Dreamweaver Book that guided me to success. I now even have a job updating web pages thanks to what I learned in this book. I highly recommend it for all ages. My son is now referencing from it as well. Learning Flash 8 is a blast as well.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book........2002-03-22
(...) I was reluctant to buy this book. This book is not for the complete novice. You need to have a very basic understanding of HTML. What this book does is give you a very good over view of both Dreamweaver 4 and Flash 5. It then goes two steps further. It shows how you can use both programs together, easily, and it shows some advance functions of Flash 5.0. If you have both programs, and have a little hands on experience this is the ideal book for you. The two things that ended up being the deciding factor on getting this book was how clearly they show you where things are. This was very important to me, as my wife wanted to learn both programs and would be able to do so easily. Next, I sat down and compared this one book to two other books I was considering buying. (One was an Dreamweaver 4 book and the other a Flash 5 book.) In doing so I found that this book covered nearly everything they did, but offered the additional information on using the programs together and advance features of Flash. Price wise, it was cheaper buying this one book then buying the two.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2002-02-27
This book is a waste of money. If you want a great guide to Dreamweaver 4, this is about as far from one as you can get. There is more about Flash 5 than Dreamweaver, and there are more pictures than text. I'd suggest to leave this one on the shelf and check out Dreamweaver 4: The Complete Reference. You won't be dissappointed with that one.
Poo-Poo.......2002-01-09
Will someone hand me some crayons, because I don't know of any other use for this COLORING BOOK!!!
I bought this book as a student who needed a quick reference to do homework assignments. For instance, one homework assignment was to make a template. I knew nada about Dreamweaver, so a wordy tutorial was over my head. I picked this picture filled book up and not only made a template, but understood it! Each step illustrated by lines pointing to the the screen shot menus blew me away! Oh the ease for a newbie like me. Must be paradise. But the honeymoon ended when I bought it and needed to actually make my first web page start to finish.
The chapters jump from one topic to another. It's like several folks were working on this book who didn't communicate. There's no sequential order, just chaos. There's no troubleshooting either. If you follow steps 1-5 and they don't work, there's no "If it doesn't work, do ___" or "make sure you do ___ or it won't work." Oh, the headaches!
I use it as a quick visual reference every now and then. But I regret spending the money because I could get references from online user tutorials. I'll never buy another book in this series again, unles of course I know a child who needs a coloring book :)

it will SHOW you.......2007-04-17
I'm 57 and slogged through many chapters of about 8 books on this subject. THIS is the one that got me moving enough to get some things done.
Excellent, Quick and to the Point.......2004-11-23
I found this book to be just what I needed to get up and running fast with both products. I don't have time to wade through some text-heavy tome, and I really appreciate the screen shots that illustrate the steps. Since I don't spend every waking hour in front of my computer, I really needed a book that literally showed me how to work with Dreamweaver and Flash, and gather enough basics to apply my own material/content to the various features and techniques. If you're looking for a quick and basic introduction to Dreamweaver and Flash, then this book will take you there. I'm definitely going to try some other titles in this series.
Visual but not natural..........2004-09-30
I wondered why the author even bothered to write the book...anyone can do better using the help menu in Dreamweaver itself. Not helpful....definitely not useful. Too basic even for beginners.
Good idea, Very disappointing execution........2004-09-04
Being able to learn something visually is great for those of us who are 'visual'. But this book seems to be just cranked out according to a formula, with little time (or perhaps little talent) being spent to make it very good.
Occasionally there's an image which illustrates a helpful point, but mostly it's just screenshots and assemblies of clipart with very dry text. It looks like the author just made a list of the features and tools in Flash and Dreamweaver and took a set of screenshots for each one and wrote a blurb telling about each. Most of the images which are supposed to be illustrating some point are fairly pointless, and most of the screenshots are not very useful either. Do you need a screenshot everytime you're told to select something from the menu? For instance, to import a sound file, it would be enough to mention File > Import, rather than giving four screenshots showing people how to use the menu and resulting file dialog box etc. Maybe the last shot, with the found file showing up in the library, is useful. But even that is badly executed, since you have to hold the book close and squint to read the text in the relevant portion of the image that lets you see just what is being illustrated. This squinting problem is owing to the fact that (virually?) all the screenshots are of a whole screen. Either the authors are too lazy to crop them, or they have a (bad) format forced on them. Either way, it's lame.
As for the illustrative images (which appear to be pieces of clip art assembled together): most add very little value. Does a picture of a movie reel, with (door) keys next to two of the frames convey any more than the name "key frame" already conveys? If you're just taking the metaphors that are embedded in the terminology, and throwing together pictures of them, how is that of any value?
I'm not sure what makes the "Master Visually" series different from the "Learn Visually" series, since this starts out by telling you how to use Control-O to open files and Control-N to create new ones. Is this "Dreamweaver and Flash for the Totally Braindead™"?
I recommend getting PeachPit books instead. In my experience they don't suffer from any of the problems I mentioned here. The images are well chosen and convey useful information, cropped down to what is relevant and sized so you can see them. And not ugly, either. Furthermore, the writing is much better, which is still extremely important. Just because a book is teaching 'visually' doesn't mean the writing should be mere captions to the pictures.
It is all there just not intuitive.......2003-12-29
I am of two minds about this book. I really like the clear visual instructions on how to manipulate data and objects. However the author seems to thinks you have something to work with.
So this book has saved hours of experimenting. The CD has the complete book so on it so you can do dynamic searches for subjects; then if you prefer manuals like me you can turn to the same page in the physical book. Also on the CD are trial versions for all the programs. Because I already have them I skipped this section. Luckily the book section is separate. Also by going to the CD its self I found the examples from the book. Again they are not intuitive on how to apply them. The help files bring up more questions.
Prompted by the section on "Set up a Dynamic Site" I was able to find the "access" file titled "space" on the accompanied CD. It gave samples of "planets." Now however I am trying to find a way to be dynamic and not use ColdFusion.
I have to admit that this with all these features it is not the easiest book to get you off the ground.

The Black Music History of Los Angeles, It Roots.......2002-12-27
I grew up in L.A. near Central Avenue. While I knew much of the music scene from the late 50's to 70's, this book blew me away and showed me how much I didn't know. The history lessons, photographs, posters and ads make this truely a collectors treasure. Tom Reed has done an outstanding job, but the passion shown throughout this book you would not know he wasn't born and raised there.
5 stars! (for what it is).......2002-09-20
This book is not easy to rate because there is so little to compare to it. The writer not only covers the music history of Los Angeles, but also gives a peak into the community itself; which supports the music scene. This book is a must have for any entertainment historian.

Good Book.......2006-01-17
If you play blitz chess or even 10 or 15 minute games regularly like me, this is definitely a good book. It includes invaluble lessons on what to do with certain amounts of time on your clock, and some different openings, that while not neccesarily the most sound opening to try in a slow game, are perfect for intuitive tactics to come out of in five minute games. Get this book if you like blitz chess!

Customer Reviews:
Poor Index, Missing key concepts, Garbage..........2005-01-18
I frequently use these reviews to select books of all types. I consider myself a power user able to learn rapidly from good texts. This book has not been very helpful for my work in Crystal Reports.
I need to be able to program Crystal Reports to perform a variety of complex reporting on databases that are completely denormalized. Thus, the ability to parse strings and execute stored procedures is critical.
This book completely fails to provide the information about built-in commands that I need. For instance, no information about string commands is present. No discussion of the use of arrays in Crystal Reports is provided.
I was deeply disappointed with this book.
Who are you writing this book for?.......2003-11-13
After reading positive reviews of this title, I decided to purchase the complete reference and was extremely disappointed. The most common problem with crystal books (or any other software application manual-excel, access, etc.) is that the author try's to appeal to all crystal report's users. There are generally three types of software user's out their, 1. database administrator/computer programmers who want reference manuals with excellent indexes. 2. Basic users who can get by with your classic "for dummies" title. 3. User's who don't understand VBA or SQL but want to be able to create reasonably advanced adhoc reports.
This title is to basic for the database administrator who would have to read 4 pages of babble to find the specific piece of information they need. There are no practice assignments for the beginner/intermediate report writer to do just that "practice". And when you do find a title that contains tutorials/assignments they are often to basic and lack real relevance in the business world. With the number of access, excel, crystal, etc. titles on the market you would think that there would be enough room to specifically appeal to the different types of software user's out their.
A good reference book.......2003-03-30
I develop financial reporting applications for various companies using VB and VBA. Recently I have completed a financial reporting system completely within Access 2000 making extensive uses of Access's report objects.
Although the Access report object does its job well, it lacks a lot of power features, i.e., limited grouping capabilities, formula in text boxes is limited to a simply expression unless you make a call to UFD, then you would loss your object encapsulation, etc, The Data Report object is VB6 is still some what of a joke, but let not open this can of worms. Thus, I have chosen Crystals reports for my developing needs.
I find George Peck's Complete Reference series very helpful. The book has 800 pages to teach me every nuance of Crystal. This book does not teach me anything about VB coding nor does it contain a reference to the object model within the RDC or any of the other object models in Crystal. I didn't buy this book to learn how to code. The author noted in page 659 specifically that the book is not meant to teach you Visual Basic.
Overall, this book gets me up to speed quickly and it's a good reference source for my future needs. Personally, I don't find the crystal help files very helpful.
Not much different than Crystal's own manual.......2003-03-15
I purchased this book as a reference. Fortunately, I had a separate training course for learning the Crystal application. And I now teach the product.
It's a good reference. I truly haven't had a question yet regarding basic or advanced procedures in the application that I couldn't find. But I would not recommend it for learning the application. It is dense.
I'm also disappointed that it is not very different from the CR 8.0 manual published by Crystal Decisions. The layout and procession of the book are virtually the same! It could have included more tutorials, too.
One thing that I would love for any CR reference/manual to include is a list and description of all the formulas in the system. To my knowledge, this does not exist anywhere, even in Crystal's own documentation.
PURCHASING RECOMMENDATION
If you need a solid reference and didn't purchase manuals with Crystal, this will work. If you need to learn the product, get something else.
Not so great.......2002-12-11
As you become more and more proficient, this book is more and more frustrating. There are so many things just touched on and not explained or not in the book at all!
